Morgan blast for Bannon and Kerry’s ‘cynicism’
By Brendan Larkin NOT for the first time this season Cork manager Billy Morgan blasted Kerry for their cynicism in yesterday’s Bank of Ireland SFC semi-final.
Banished to the stand after receiving a one match sideline ban for encroachment, Morgan didn’t spare referee John Bannon either. He blamed the Longford official for not protecting the Cork players against some disgraceful tactics by a number of Kerry players.
“There has been a lot of talk about Kerry’s cynicism all year and today they showed again just how cynical they are,” he said.
“There were a number of incidents in that game that did not do anything for Gaelic football. Nicholas Murphy, came in for special treatment from the very start.
“At the throw in he was stamped on by a Kerry player; he later got a knee into the back and was stamped on a second time by another Kerry player.
“We lost Michael Shields after he was blatantly hit in the back. He was hurt in that challenge, which eventually forced him off. There was no free given and Kerry got a point from the resultant line ball.
“The refereeing was appalling. Where the association gets the referees from I don’t know. And how they appoint people like Mr Bannon for such important matches is beyond me.
“We got no protection from either him or his officials, and there has to be questions asked as to why not. That’s his job, and he certainly reneged on his responsibilities out there today.
Can there be any remaining doubt regarding his absolute hatred for Kerry after this? What a miserable individual.

"Everything had gone smoothly for Cork in the first quarter, helped enormously it must be said by a 8-0 free count. Referee, John Bannon, who gave a good overall performance, drew the wrath of the Kerry supporters for not awarding any free against Cork for 18 minutes which was most unusual."
Martin Breheny certainly thought Cork got a bit of protection!

Without sounding like its sour grapes, if you failed to see what happened to Shields, I suggest you get stronger glasses.

Shields got a very hard rattle that was perfectly legal. It was an attempt by galvin to nail him fairly which he did. Bannon was and is the worst ref in the country. He always wants to be the centre of attention. I thought gooch was fouled about 5 times without any free. With regard to Dara, i thought Nicholas Murphy was pulling and dragging him all day and Dara kept retaliating. 8-0 free count to cork after 16 minutes says it all. Anyone know how many wides we kicked. I thought it was going to cost us at one stage.

Morgan is as always a bad loser when it comes to Kerry (you'd think he'd be used of it by now). How he can say kerry were cynical yesterday is beyond me. Kerry hit hard but fair yesterday. All his trying to do is put negative attention on the Kerry team. Having said that Pat Bannon is a bad ref.

Bottom line is that Cork choked again in Croker. The looked like lost sheep in the 2nd half. The game was never in doubt in the 2nd half and coasted to a finish. You can't win in croker relying on 1 forward. The pitch is simply too big. Perhaps Owenabue might pass on that message to billy. Blaming refs, cynical kerry play etc is fine in a close game but kerry were cruising. When the moved Lynch into the corner on mfr it showed that they had lost the intent to win the game and it was about damage limitation.

thought yesterday was a clean game overall, and while there were a few "minor" incidents, i dont think billy morgan has much to moan about. cork were well beaten, could have be alot more than 6 points.

Seamus, if that was Kerry cruising then I'd watch the final from behind the couch.
Ye deserved the victory yesterday but please God next year we'll give ye reason to "retaliate".

Seamus hits the nail on the head again. Billy spent the week in a media war against Kerry calling us cynical. Result Cork get the first 8 frees of the match. The ref was bad for both sides well off the play and making baffling decisions. Billy can't accept that Kerry have the better footballers. Moving Lynch (was he ever as quiet) to corner back showed a damage limiation exercise. Was it just me or did anyone else think Cork bringing on Noel O'Leary was an attempt to get Galvin sent off and missing for the final?
Loved the moment when Billy appeared on the the big screen and got a big cheer from the Kerry fans. Once he realised what was happening he ducked down (back in the siege bunker) Now THAT's cynical Billy!!

It was clear Cork were getting the majority of the referee's favour, especially in the early stages....sitting beside a few Mayo lads and they were sayin it was there for all to see....
Thought Kerry gave as good as they got....the Cork boys are no angels......Murphy was more than happy to swing out of Daragh all day, on and off the ball, problem is Daragh will never shy away from that, and I was worried it would cost him, especially considering the ref....saying that he is an old hand at keeping it just below the radar in terms of seeing the redcard when fellas are drawing him out...but lookin at Whelan and Ryan, they will be another step up again in terms of aggression, especially Ryan, he was like a man possessed against W-Meath, and both Daragh and Tommy will have to be cute in keeping their tempers relatively in check.
Working up North allot and fellas giving out yards about Galvin...its great to hear it.....he is an asset to us, can get as physical as needed and is a fine footballer to boot....think he is never slow to step forward and put it up to any team....irreplaceable at the moment in my book.

Galvin is brillliant for the hard tackling and hits he gives in the run of play and, obviously, his workrate and overall contribution, but he has got to stop the petulant nonsense (i.e. kicking the ball away before a free which ultimately led to a Cork score).

The amount of ball that Galvin won was unreal........... that tackle on McGeeney has upset Armagh and if the shoe was on the other foot we would be upset too.

Morgan is a very small man indeed who is blinded to whats really going on on the field due to his utter hatred of kerry as long morgan is at the helm we need never fear

He's pathetic. No mention of Nicholas Murphy's off the ball charge stright into Seamus Moynohans chest in teh first half as Seamus was trying to make a run, No mention of Noel O'Leary trying to start a fight with everyone and everything on teh field. No mention of Derek Kavanagh taking hold of Donaghy's jersey in the first minute and only eltting it go after the final whistle. No mention of the seemingly sole right to a free that Cork appear to have enjoyed in teh early stages. Yes Billy, Kerry use underhand tactics to gain an advantage, but so do your fellas. Shut up your moaning and take your beating like a good sportsman.
One of the most enjoyable moments yesterday was seeing the clown up in the stand on the big screen towards the end when he knew he was on the losing side to Kerry in a big game once again. Beautiful...

Morgan is a frustrated bitter little man that cant take his beating. He lost the match but he won the race home. He got the 7.00 train with colman. Some very p'ed off cork fans got turned back while Billy strolled through. Needless to say we offered our condolances. ;D

I'm almost beginning to enjoy the annual Morgan whinge-fest at this stage - when he's moaning it means that Cork are climbing onto the train home with their tails between their legs.
He is a superb manager but it is a shame that he can't take his beating like a man and wish his neighbours good luck for the final. So long Billy, enjoy the Winter.
p.s. I though it was hilarious having the thing on the big screen yesterday "the managers of both teams have requested that fans do not enter the playing area after the game". Thats a bit rich coming from Billy Morgan given his recent antics.

Billy was the right man to lecture the fans about going on the pitch!! ;D ;D
Seriously the guys is a very good manager and won the lot as a player also. He is not doing his standing in the game much good with his rants.

saw paul come into hueston apres match got big cheer from SOME of those heading south. any of those kerry (fans) who dont like some aspects of his play have obviously never played football at any competive level. a certain all star as t lyons said any county manager would die to get his likes as for billy he has done a good job to bring cork this far and if he stays at it they will get there PROVIDING HE KEEPS HIS BIG MOUTH SHUT

Galvin does a good job and takes attention away from others, its more likely that his marker will get sent off trying to "prove a point". Have also been very impressed with O'Mahoney the past 2 games

Was anybody surprised by what Morgan said. He wasnt going to just say Kerry were the better team etc. For his own sake he should jack it in at this stage, the obsesssion of winning an all ireland with this Cork team could kill him.

just after looking at an article in todays indo with Ger O'Keffee, Morgan didn't have the decency to go to the kerry dressing room after the game.

To be fair to Cork GAA fans(and I am in exile in West Cork), they are amongst the best supporters in the country. Any of the fans who have an understanding of football are embarrassed with the rantings but.....
Because of the last few months rantings by Billy there is an unmerciful feeling amongst the peripherals that they are being beaten by Kerry due to underhand tactics. I was unlucky enough to be in the small pocket of Cork fans in the Cusack & as above - most were great sports, but a minority were fcuking and blinding at the ref & worst of all there was persoanl abuse against individual players - shouting for your team is one thing, but calling Galvin & DOS etc a fcuking b****x etc etc is a true sign of a misguided (maybe a soccer) supporter.
As for Morgan, his 80/90's team included such luminaries as Niall Cahalane, Conor Counihan, Teddy McCarthy, Larry Tompkins etc. None of whom ever shirked a challange nor were above off the ball physical confrontation. I don't remember Kerry fans at the time moaning about them, nor should we as it's part of the game.
