Barring draws, there'll be no Senior Intercounty games in Fitzgerald Stadium until February 2006 at the earliest.

waste of a stadium alright, a good example of a stadium that could be used for other sports since it wont be used now till feb 2006.

Kerry's 3 most likely games in Munster are against Tipp, Limerick and Cork which are all away games due to the way Kerry have an every 2nd year deal running with them. Besides that there will be no other games that could possibly be played there. If Kerry were to meet Clare in the Munster final it'd be there all alright but the chances of that are very slim.

There is the chance that some qualifiers will be played there. Cork Tipp was a disaster traffic wise last year, but that's because our friends in the Gardai didn't turn off the traffic lights in Castleisland and the one Guard walking up the town didn't bother to turn his hand to traffic control at that lights. But if say Waterford were to play Clare in a qualifier, Killarney is a likely venue.

A joke alright. Hopefully bruce springstein in the summerfest though. Kingdomkerry Bruce has been pencilled in for Dublin, 24 May touring the new album so I'd say we'll have to travel. It would have been a huge coup if Killarney had got him though. If he was on-stage down around midfield with that wristy guitar work and his legendary on-stage stamina (3 hr gigs!) the kerry hurlers would probably be giving him a call!!!

I'm sure it'll be used for a qualifier or two but I suppose thats they way it goes. It got 3 big games last year and couldnt expect that every year.

Do the hurling and football qualifiers, not to mention the County Championship, not count as use of Fitzs stadium.
We probably will be lucky to get qualifiers because of the fact that we are central to nowere but ourselves. Nothing we can do about it and counties would have to go out of there way to play there. Portlaoise has that aspect sewn up.
Thats no reason to start going on about it as if it was Croke Park looking for it to be opened up to other sports. Why, after all the work that has gone in to it should they. There will be plenty County championship games at all levels over the summer months and the less use over the winter months the better although I'm sure the schools will make use of it for munster games.

Kerry will only get to play there is we draw with either Limerick or Cork. After last year, I can't see any other counties being asked to play there as a neutral venue.
We could play club championship there, but it would have to be a double header, as otherwise the ground would be too empty. How about Kilcummin vs Rathmore and East Kerry vs Feale Rangers. Or maybe Dingle vs An Gaeltacht. Truth is that the stadium is too big for most club championship matches. No point in using it just for the sake of having it used.

Due to the home and away agreement we have with Clare, Cork, Tipperary and Limerick, the only team we can play there this year, barring a replay, is Clare.

Is it true that the GAA dont own Fitzgerald stadium but that the Killarney Town Council own it.
If so, is there anything to stop other sports being played there or do the GAA have some form of lease taken out on the stadium.

They should get the floodlights like austin stack park and it will make more use of it. Just reading there about the champions league final supposedly coming to croke park if they open up for soccer. Is this just made up to more pressure on the GAA to open the gates???

Dont believe everything you read in the mirror or the star. Also one floodlit ground in the county is plenty, financially it wouldnt be feasible to have two in Kerry.l

And it's pressure like that which will turn the vote against opening up. If there's one thing the GAA don't like, it's media pressure telling them how to vote. At the moment, the 2/3rd majority is obtainable with Leinster voting en bloc to open on a temporary basis while Lansdowne is being renovated. This wouldn't allow a champions league final in in all reality.
But this has been debated to death elsewhere so no follow ups please.
On using floodlights in Killarney - we can't fill Austin Stack park for a league game during the winter. Why put floodlights in Killarney where a crowd of 7,000 would be lost. And we don't need floodlights for summer games.

On that last point . . .. floodlights would be wasted in Fitzgerald stadium with the availability of a large floodlit pitch in Tralee.
I read somewhere that the GAA are going to look at smaller grounds as condidates for floodlighting (parnell park was the example given). Obviously a crowd of 6000 in a 12000 capacity stadium does not lose as much revenue as a crowd of 6000 'lost' in a stadium the size of Killarneys.
