Shane Ryan Tom O’Sullivan Chrissy McKaigue Conor McCluskey Graham O’Sullivan Tadhg Morley Gareth McKinless Conor Glass Brendan Rogers Paudie Clifford Sean O’Shea Ciaran McFaul Paul Cassidy David Clifford Shane McGuigan Derry 8-7 Kerry A lot of close calls. Clearly I'm biased but i'm taking Lynch above Shane Ryan and one of Conor Doherty/McGrogan have to start in the Hb line. These 3 players don't currently have the national reputation of Ryan, Morley or Graham O'Sullivan but I think that will change very soon. Believe me there’s no one down south doubting the merits of this Derry team who have proven they are the real deal but your right they have to win the big one to get the full recognition McClosey best 4 in the land currently worth the admission alone I would say Brendan Rodgers although a fabulous athlete and player is not having a great league so I’d put Joe o Connor ahead on current form Cassidy hot and cold but I admit I cant name a consistent scoring 15 on our side that can run like him and chip in scores like him and that’s telling we’re behind a bit on athleticism and it’s costing us

McGrogan is a good player but I also left out Gavin White. McGrogan/White/Graham/Beaglaoich all are of a very similar standard hard to choose between them.

Lynch gets a bad rep because of how far forward he is asked to play. He can get caught out when other players give the ball away like in the 2022 Semi but he plays most of the game in the middle 8 and we benefit more than it costs us. We are totally different team with him in it.

The sooner a rule change is enforced to prevent this woeful tactic of a goalie sauntering out the field the better. I cannot abide by it.
Arguably the best goalkeeper in the history of the gaa in Stephen Cluxton barely steps outside his 21!

Couldn’t disagree more and the next evolution will be that the keeper will be the last man back and actually a genuine outfielder with one speciality kick out taker

Was only thinking about that in Fitzgeralds Stadium at the weekend, and thinking back to the likes of Charlie Nelligan, Declan Ó Keefe, Diarmuid Murphy and the like that only moved outside the small square when on the way back to the dressing room after the final whistle! GK's not allowed outside the 13m line should be the 1st rule brought back in, the position is called a 'goalkeeper' for a reason. Shouldn't be that hard a rule to police

All for goalkeepers coming up the pitch. Adds to the excitement imo.

Jesus wasn't Shane Curran doing it long before the Rory Beggan's?
Nothing wrong with thinking a bit outside the box.
Louth once upon a time bamboozled Kerry with playing it along the ground, soccer style, back in 1913. Dublin perfected the handpass in the early 1920s. Kildare invented the solo around the same time. You had Kevin Heffernen's roving forward template in the 1950s Down's 'total football' of the 1960s The swarm/blanket defence of the 2000s Dublin's basketball hybrid of 2010s
They'll always be innovations, as long as Kerry keep producing lads who can grab a high ball and can accurately kick into space for forwards with two good boots and an ability to shoot from distance we'll cope.

All for goalkeepers coming up the pitch. Adds to the excitement imo. I'm all for the excitement Scaul. I just don't see it myself. I find football mostly dull and weary nowadays. I use the term football very loosely. Most fixtures end up the exact same with souls upon souls camped within the 45. You could tune into any game and it's the exact same. I see lads now with decent opportunities to have a cut at a score and they're not even looking up at the posts as an option. Hold onto possession at all costs is the mantra. Of course this is not a new discussion but to me it's worse it's getting. My own opinion is that this is not helped by adding yet another figure out the field in the form of the goalie. Something has to change. To me the skills of the game are in a sad decline as a result of this endless possession game, mostly via hand-pass after hand-pass. Often completely uncontested. The so call forward mark, which to me is yet another blight on the game, was brought in to assist the use of the quick ball in. A complete waste of time.

Seaniebo Looks like you’ll have to tune in to the hurling Instead where it’s at in terms of excitement
I’m hoping a few tweaks can get the game back to more contests and less passing the ball backwards
As regards the goalie coming out I love it a very innovative thing and it’s still evolving Players will have to learn how to dink the keeper from 50 yards out I’d definitely let that go for another while And see how it pans out The keepers absolutely love it and young kids now think being a goalie is very exciting that s a good thing I would say Beggan going forward was great to watch Rafferty Armagh same But Lynch from Derry bringing it to another level

Sorry if this is stating the blatantly obvious but the roaming keeper is a direct result of defensive football.
One extra player enables teams to break lines and give an overlapping player.
What is hard to understand is that it's obvious that the best team in the country don't believe in this tactic unless as in 2019 they are down to 14.
They basically trust their outfield players to outsmart the opposition.
Dublin don't follow fads they make their own and the beat the rest.
Jasus it's depressing that Kerry can't be more innovative and come up with our own ideas.

Jasus it's depressing that Kerry can't be more innovative and come up with our own ideas. eh? you can argue that teams had to come up with things to counteract our way of playing football like the blanket defences back 20 years ago when we were reaching 8 all ireland finals in 10 seasons. jack as an example came up with direct diagonal ball into inside forwards like Crowley in 2004 final, then employed Donaghy there. a ball playing center back was another one. loads! very perculiar to say the team with the most AI wins, that has just been in last 2 finals doesnt come up with our own ideas.

The press on Dublins kickouts was another good one I think Eamon Fitz introduced that when ever we had a close In Free we’d push up hard hands in the air etc Dublin right now are in the early stages of their latest innovation and it’s getting them all these goals
They simply up the short passing tempo to a ferocious speed full of diagonal short runs they pick their times to do it abandoning the slow lateral and backward passing for a few minutes It’s ripping all defence s apart Simple but genius

The long ball into a big full forward wasn't invented by Jack. ODwyer was doing that long before that. I'll accept the goal keeper press was a Kerry innovation under EF. But what have really done ? Dublin came up with the basket ball tactics - using the sidelines to set traps and create turnovers. Donegal came up with the blanket / counter attack. Armagh/Monaghan/Tyrone the fly keeper. What have we done ? We depend on our history and culture and being simple better. We are not simply better anymore and we need a bit more imagination.

We are not simply better anymore and we need a bit more imagination. We shouldn't be aping them. How do you know that if Kerry played with traditional flair and creativity they wouldn't be better than the teams winning playing formulaic football? Not since before the defeat by Armagh in 2002 have Kerry played that way in an AI final. We have been trying to copy them and it has cost us dearly. As I said before we have the lowest return in AI's in 100 years. Surely the fastest wing back in the country shouldn't have been passing the ball backwards from a standing position in last year's final? The solution is hiding in plain sight..

Which involves loads of very short passes between the forwards.

One note about Killian Spilane’s performance is that he was being marked by Johnny McGrath who has kept Shane McGuigan and Ryan O’Donoghue scoreless from play and limited Darragh Canavan to 2 from play. Killian kicked 3 from play and would have had another 2 or 3 if it wasn’t for lack of match sharpness. He also was the only inside forward showing for kick passes.

Sounds like something Mayo would do with the game level in the 75th minute of an AI final

very very unusual for Ryanair to cancel a flight, normally the most reliable airline in the world. strange one, hopefully they didnt lose money on bookings over there.
wonder was it the bad weather that lead to it being cancelled....
