Donal Down a great man to win his own ball. Surprised he was left on the whole game though, he seemed to be in a lot of discomfort with the shoulder from early in the second half. Hopefully no damage done.

How did Roche do in terms of bringing others into play? There might be a suggestion that while a very talented player has had a tendancy to go on his own too much.

Best I've seen of him, 1.2 is a very good return, Ball sticks when it goes into him. It'll be interesting how Jack finds the best partner for DC in there. I was a little disappointed in Brosnan missing a straight forward free.

Brosnan worked seriously hard defensively today, did a savage amount of work. He came out and worked and alllowed the other 2 to shine. Credit where credit is due I thought it was a very selfless performance from him.

I'm a fan of his and he had a good game overall.

That’s always been my impression of Roche but he has definitely improved that side of his game. Still more to do but he’s done very well and is doing all he can to take his chance. We needed to find a few more inside line options and fair play to lads holding their hands up

However conditions were pretty much perfect today so would still wonder about him on a wet day.

I would think that was the role he was told to play today, drift out and get on the ball, he is a very good distributor of the ball.

There's better scorers than him in the team in my opinion so leave them do the damage inside. He's got a range of passing that a lot of others don't however, he can pick a pass from 50 metres away which can unlock the opposition defence. It was obvious today in the 1st half he wasn't quiet in the game and trying to do to much inside between carrying the ball and wasteful shooting. When he moved out in thr 2nd half it made a big difference and played a big part in Kerry getting goal chances. Could be a game changer for Tony by moving him out for the rest of the league. He'll have more room outside, letting him spray passes into the Full Forward line. Same happened above in Croke Park against Mayo in the league final last year and it's definitely something Jack should look to explore more.

I disagree. I don't think it suited him out around the middle. Held onto the ball far too long in my opinion. Thought he was lucky at times not to get caught in position or slowing it down too much in general.

I don’t think Tony is a 11 either, he can certainly play out the field a bit and is a good passer but I don’t think he could do what Seanie or Paudie does.
The question for Jack is who best complements David not who is the second best corner forward or full forward on the county. I think Tony is a guy with the talent to make the 15 but maybe the confidence is not quite there at the moment

Very happy to see Donal Down and Dara Roche pushing hard now for starting spot as It lifts our entire forward line both are hard direct runners and can penetrate a defence. Exactly what we need-in an inside forward As good as Tony is and as skillful as he is he so far has not shown that he can take on and get past a good full back hence they play him outside where he can be less of a scorer and more of a distributor I think he need to show the finishing side to his game too Steven Okunbar again looked promising at midfield today despite never having to get out of second gear I’ll say it again he needs more minutes to be ready for the bigger days Looking forward to what’s going to be a much more competitive game v Mayo next time

Opinion: Did anybody else think the Monaghan player was harshly sent off on a straight red? Watching it back on League Sunday it looked high but the usual outcome for these 'clothesline' tackles is normally a standard yellow card. Did anybody else get a different look at it? (Maybe someone who had a good view from the Stand?) I just was curious as to what was so different that it was punished with a red rather than a yellow.

I think the direction of travel like rugby is that any contact with the head means a red card is likely. At the moment though, the application is entirely inconsistent and yesterdays incident could just as easily have been a yellow. I do think this is something players need to watch as players still fly into tackles and even though it may be an honest attempt to win the ball, it won’t matter, they will be red carded. This is where rugby has gone with high tackles and the gaa is on this journey also.

No. It happened down in front of me in the stand. It was an elbow to the eye (not far off the Paudie Clifford elbow in the Junior All Ireland). Looked harsh on the TG4 replays alright but I was furious at the time. No idea if that was his intent, but he certainly caught Stefan with a nasty blow.

There's just something about walking up the terrace of Fitzgerald's and seeing that patch of green below you, enveloped by the brooding backdrop of the Reeks that makes your heart glad.
Be it January or July is their anything in sport to match the sight of a Kerry team in their spiritual home, pounding the grass with the sun at their backs?
It's been too long since I was last acquainted with this dear old ground, the downside to this split season!
There was indeed a whisper of spring around the Kingdom yesterday. The golden daffodils my Nan planted around her house decades ago have begun their annual emergence. And I saw two more flowerings on the grass carpet that was spread below me yesterday afternoon.
Darragh Roche and Donal O are the real deal, make absolutely no mistake about that!
They tortured their Farney foes, dinking, probing and then bursting into space to knock over some of the finest points you would ever be privileged to see. A special mention to Donal's effort which I think was Kerry's fifth score? My friend was complaining in the car ride over about the Grab All Association charging €18 for the match, he shut up once that ball sailed over. Repaid with interest!
In truth our opponents were poor, and you feel they'll be no Steve McQueen=esque great escape for Monaghan this spring. But do not let that shroud a Kerry performance that was the perfect tonic for last weekend. Energy, skill and competence.
Our backline had the limited Monaghan attack living of scraps. To be critical, we perhaps gave up a few more frees and scores than was necessary. But many of those came when the game was long beyond doubt.
One does wish Shane Ryan would venture no farther than the parallelogram. This madness of getting him to take free kicks has to end given how poor a conversion rate he has. Still at least down here we scorn the kamikaze tactics in vogue with our Ulster net minders. If nothing else Beggan's determination to be near the Kerry goals gave the crowd plenty of excitement the countless times Kerry won turn-overs and raced down the field.
In the middle we held our own and though I was disparaging of Tony last week, I'll put my hand up and say he had a fine game yesterday and a deeper role seems to suit him. Killian seemed determined to answer his critics too and when introduced helped remind us the quality that runs through that particular gene-pool.
Like the man from nowhere, Paudi Clifford suddenly materialised - an amazing feat given there was no mention of him in my programme!! He then sets off to score one of those goals you'll be recalling with incredulity over a porter many, many years hence.
On Saturday evening London was silenced by a 17 stone Afrikaner by way of Argile who ripped through the roses to produce two of the finest trys that ever graced the Six Nations. Scotland might have their Van Der Merde, we have the Fossa firecracker.
But I'll end where I began - the day belonged to two young men who yet again reassured the Kingdom support that the waters flowing through Kerry will always unearth some precious forward jewels.
They say to stay at the top you need to find 1 or 2 players every season, I submit we've done so two weeks in!
Maybe I'll be accused of too much hype but for those of us there yesterday I reckon we saw two men who will wear the Green and Gold with distinction for many years to come.
Like I said, yesterday was a day that did the heart good. The winter recedes into memory and a spring bright with possibilities is upon us. A sold out Castlebar with a home side still without a win will be as though a task as D1 has to offer. But after yesterday I'm excited to see how the Champions confront that challenge.

Yeah, it looked like it might have been an elbow alright but I wasn't sure. Would have been harsh otherwise. In fairness, the Monaghan lad didn't look particularly shocked to get the line.

As I had some of the small people with me yest, I sat n the stand - usually would prefer the terrace in Killarney but those small people brought me luck as we were seated approx at the town end 45m so has perfect view of all 3 Kerry goals and of all of Paudie’s run- in fact, our excitement started as he was sent yo warm up on the line in front of us. I suppose it was a reflection of the somewhat lack of intensity of the game that the warms ups etc were of interest and entertainment. Anyhow- great result, as many have said very impressed by Donal o D and Darragh Roche. Good to see Paudie back - although id worry a bit that he should Be rested longer. Interesting too to see Shane Ryan in the squad and both D Clifford and Sean oSe in the stand but seemed to be with the squad- my guess is Jack had some type of session or get together with full squad on Sun eve. I find myself getting giddy as another season kicks in

Have we any players from 2018- 2020 minor panels? Joe Lenihan (2019) is the only one I can think of. Is Paul O'Shea involved at all this year? Exceptional talent at minor, be a real shame if he doesn't progress at some stage.

I think Dylan Geaney and Devon Burns also
Did Ruairi Murphy play minor?

Great to see the squad strengthening, Jack will be happy to see competition, reality we might only see one of that forward line that started yesterday , start come knockout stages of the championship , that’s good news for the squad.
Looked back on the match, holy god, that Monaghan team were naive, turned so many balls over with lots of players ahead of the ball, our inside line had a long acre in front of them all day, they used it well, but 7 of that monaghan team started championship last year, no recognised MF yesterday, reflected in their performance.
It’s great we get games like this, good for fringe players confidence, looking forward to a sterner test in 2 weeks, but for now, we’ll done to all the new lads, continued success to you all.

Is Roche pushing 28, didn't realise that. Its taken him a bit of time so to show his potential. Was he involved under Keane?

How many of Geaney, Donal, Killian, Brosnan and Roche could start if everyone fit. How many could be on a 26 panel?

How many of Geaney, Donal, Killian, Brosnan and Roche could start if everyone fit. How many could be on a 26 panel? Are they all fighting for the one spot at the moment? There is serious competition for places in the forwards at the minute. And to be fair in defence too. I thought Pa Warren played very well yesterday.
