The Kerryman reporting that Jack Savage and Cormac Coffey will be out of the country for work reasons at championship time. m.independent.ie/regionals/kerryman/sport/gaa/kerry-county-senior-football-championship-dates-times-and-venues-set-for-first-round-of-group-games-41943415.htmlDon't know what players have opted in or out of the East Kerry set up for this year, but if they are all around and interested in playing and with the group format giving them time to build cohesion and avoid an ambush like last year, it's hard to see who will beat them. Here would be just some of the small army of players they could be calling on.. Goalkeepers Shane Ryan(if not used in forward line), Brendan Kealy, Brian Kelly Full back line Dara O'Callaghan, Chris O'Donoghue, Owen Fitzgerald, Niall O'Donoghue Half backs Paul Murphy, Jonathan Lyne, Cian Gammell, Daniel O'Brien, Pa Warren, Jack Sherwood Midfielders Paul O'Shea, Darragh Lyne, Padraig Lucey, Kieran Murphy Half forwards Paudie Clifford, Ruairi Murphy, Patrick Darcy, Conor Herlihy Full forwards Darragh Roche, David Clifford, James O'Donoghue, John Moynihan, Donal O'Sullivan Some panel of players there, Mark Ryan and Ronan Buckley as mentioned above and Dan Murphy are 3 more. It’ll be difficult for them to choose a starting 15. Shane Ryan Chris O’Donoghue Jack Sherwood Niall Donohue Pa Warren Daniel O’Brien Cian Gammell Mark Ryan Ronan Buckley Ruairi Murphy Paudie Clifford Paul Murphy Donal O’Sullivan David Clifford Dara Roche

The only side that will beat EK this year is themselves - makes a mockery of the divisional system and with the round robin group set up to warm them up it plays right into their hands.

If James o Donoghue can’t start for a divisional team then we may aswell pack the whole thing in and start again

I have said it before, but the real issue here in my opinion is not that East Kerry are too strong --- it is that top players in East Kerry are not getting access to County Championship.

Absolutely, I made similar points last year. The divisional sides are artificial constricts that were dreamt up to make sure that the best junior & intermediate players got exposure at senior championship level. That’s not happening now as most of the intermediate teams are part of one divisional side. Sure donal o Sullivan couldn’t get a start for EK last year and he was involved with Kerry at the time

East Kerry have 5 inter clubs and 2 premier clubs. Fossa and Listry could be Premier finalists this year. Mid Kerry have 4 inter and 1 premier. With all the hype about East Kerry, Mid Kerry can be quietly confident. Crokes should get out of group 1, with St. Kieran's or Kenmare. East Kerry and anyone of the other three from Group 2. Mid Kerry and Stacks from Group 3 but Na Gaeil can't be discounted. Templenoe and South Kerry from Group 4. I'd see Crokes, East Kerry, Mid Kerry and Templenoe as favourites to win their respective groups. East Kerry, Mid Kerry and Templenoe will want to avoid each other in the quarter-finals. Rahilly's, Dingle and Spa are awfully unlucky to be in the same group after making the senior club semi-finals. Being in the same group as East Kerry then is a double whammy. Whoever joins EK out of the group could be facing Mid Kerry or Templenoe in the quarter-finals. A tough route.

East Kerry could put up a cricket score against a depleted Kerins O Rahillys side in two weeks.

Can anyone tell me the last Club side to win a minor or U21 County Championship? Dingle won back to back minor titles in recent times - before EK went off on a run of 6? Rahilly's won it in 2006 and Laune Rangers did three in a row minor titles in the 1980's (87-89). Stacks won minor in 1980 (one of only two titles at minor) and interestingly Crokes have never won a minor title (have been part of a Killarney division I think).

I only ask cos divisional teams are really dominating these two competitions and is it only a matter of time before it starts at Senior level. Would a thought be to make the County Championship be either all Club or all Divisional teams. I know the split season is new but I see some problems coming down the line in Kerry with fixtures. Plus are our County players playing more football( too much) than any counties. Would a hectic club season schedule have a knock on effect with injuries and freshness of inter county players for the following year.

A championship review suggested going from the 8:8 split to 10 clubs and 6 divisional teams. If East Kerry win as expected, it is fair that the Senior Club final final winner goes on to Munster. It is not as if senior clubs are being denied an avenue of success, with the dual championship format.

Is East Kerry success guaranteed this year? The limited time to prepare the team (two weeks between club champ and county champ could work against them) although the round robin should help against this. It is always said that the divisional teams get stronger as the championship progresses. Also the big clubs that make up EK will have an eye on getting promotion to Senior and a possible AI campaign.
I think the leveling up of the club sides this year will make all club v club matches very interesting as seen in the club championship. All are capable of beating eachother. There is no longer a single dominant senior club team.
KOR will struggle without Savage. Crokes are rebuilding with a young team and will be without White. Stacks are a bit at sea, likewise with Kenmare. Templenoe appear the best but have a limited panel. Spa will be tested big time by EK and a big loss could effect them. Dingle are unpredictable but are League Champions. Na Gaeil are new comers to the senior ranks.
An interesting championship ahead.

Also the big clubs that make up EK will have an eye on getting promotion to Senior and a possible AI campaign. this point is definitely true. I personally know of 2 players who are in latter stages with club, who may not play with the divisional team and to be honest, its very very fair. why risk injury and possible put the biggest days in your clubs history at risk? county board definitely may learn a harsh lesson in the coming weeks about the divisional sides - if they do poorly, nobody will look at the fixtures and why the big players didnt turn up, they will just scream out load at how poor they did, without looking at the reasons. they also, have 0 time to get together, because of the closeness to the club games. its not ideal.

Six in one and a half dozen in the other. Divisional teams have two weeks to prepare. They have many years of experience with the setup. It's great that the best players in the county get to play in the county championship, even if they are playing in the junior championship.

Brilliant that there is a Friday night championship game this weekend.
County Board should encourage club championship and county league games on Friday nights where it suits clubs.

Think Shane Enright hits the nail on the head in his column today in the Kerryman Divisional sides are imbalanced, either too strong(Ek) or too weak. I'd also be concerned about their impact at minor and u21. Have they served their purpose or run their course. And again with the new split season have you room to play 2 Championship competitions.i.e Club championship and County championship. I'd also question the impact of such a prolonged season on the life cycle of an inter county player.

Any predictions for the 1st round. Who will impress and challenge EK in the latter stages. I reckon dingle will topple spa. Easy W for Crokes?

Predictions:
Crokes v St. Kierans – Crokes.. not by mush though
Shannon Rangers v Kenmare – Kenmare
Strand Road v East Kerry – East Kerry
Dingle v Spa – Have a sneaky feeling Spa will prevail here
Austin Stacks v Na Gaeil, this will be tight in my opinion, but the Rockies after a shock
Mid V West Kerry, Mid Kerry are the sleeping giant, will have too much for a depleted West.
St. Brendan’s V Feale Rangers, two divisions at a low ebb, Brendans are decimated without Na Gaeil, Feale aren’t much better… hard to call, but a game both sides will feel they have a realistic chance.
Templenoe v South Kerry – One of the games of the round for me, the Club team will be more settled, South will improve but Templenoe for me
