Kingdom run riot in the first half at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, leading by 13 points Geaney stars as Kerry strike early and often against Cork in U20 season bow
Sat, 19 Feb, 2022 - 20:48 TJ Galvin, Paurc Ui Chaoimh
John Kerins U20 Cup: Cork 0-13 Kerry 3-16
Kerry’s U20s ran out comfortable winners over their Cork counterparts in the John Kerins Cup at Páirc Uí Caoimh on Saturday. The damage was done in the first half as Kerry lead 2-10 to 0-3 at half time.
Cork will be happier with their second half performance as they played with far more intensity. However, the game was effectively over as a contest at half-time. Cork’s discipline let them down as they conceded 16 frees in the first half compared to just five for Kerry.
Kerry’s running game was causing Cork issues as they repeatedly opened up the centre of the Cork defence. The first goal came inside two minutes and was very much self-inflicted as overplaying in the Cork defence led to a turnover. Kevin Goulding put the ball on a plate for midfielder Ruairi Murphy to finish the first of his two goals.
Cillian Burke and Tommy Cronin were linking up well down the Kerry left with Burke, in particular, prominent throughout. Dylan Geaney, a member of the last Kerry team to win an All-Ireland minor title, was putting on an exhibition of shooting off left and right as well as from placed balls. He finished the day with ten points overall.
Kerry’s second goal came from Thomas O’Donnell in the 20th minute. A well-worked move ended with the centre forward finishing past Callum Dungan. Things could have been worse for Cork had Dungan not pulled off a couple of point-blank saves.
Cork’s attack was lacking cohesion in the first half as the ball was frequently turned over. Things certainly improved in that regard in the second half. Darragh O’Mahony’s introduction at half-time gave Cork an added impetus.
Whenever Cork managed to get the ball into the hands of Colin Walsh who scored five points. Two of which were rebounds from excellent saved by Devon Burns in the Kerry goal. The game petered out from there with the impressive Geaney kicking the final score. Both sides will be better for the run out with bigger challenges lying ahead.

Is Oisin Maunsell involved? He has had a lot of injuries Yeah Oisin is involved this year, but is currently unavailable due to injury as you have eluded to. Anyone know the rule this year in regard to player availability to their clubs? I'd imagine it's when Kerry's involvement in the U-20 championship finishes (as champions hopefully)

FT Kerry 0-13 Galway 0-6 HT Kerry 0-6 Galway 0-2
A bit too much handpassing for my liking and not as flowing as you usually get at this grade but a high diagonal wind in Tralee made kicking difficult so allowances have to be made. Kerry were always in control of this one and seemed to have a marked physical edge over Galway. Very strong at the back in particular with the Stacks contingent to the fore. Cillian Burke impressed in midfield and Thomas O'Donnell on the forty took a few nice scores. Keith Evans injected a bit of energy when coming on for the last quarter.
Slow burner of a game, not helped by the conditions or by a referee who seemed to think it was a non-contact sport he was officiating at. Worse ways to pass a few hours though.
Against my better judgment, I was persuaded into the stand today by a companion and was immediately reminded of why I never go in there. Whereas it wasn't a bad day outside, mother of God, the cold in that stand, it's unnatural. Crick in my neck tonight from the constant freezing draft pouring down it at the game. Never mind putting a cover on the sideline terrace, they really need to do something with that stand first.

Kerry 0-13 Galway 0-6 HT 0-6 0-2
I had a strange experience yesterday. I arrived home as dry as I left it. Weird things happening lately. However, I can assure you that I didn't arrive home as warm as I left it. I was glad to plonk myself down on the sofa for an afternoon of rugby, followed by Donegal/Tyrone. It is hard to beat home comforts. Still when Kerry come visiting it is difficult to say no. I suppose it is indelibly imprinted in the bones at this stage, frozen as they may be.
A very strong wind blew from the Horans end, veering towards the terrace side. It must have been difficult for the players. They gave us a game of moderate excitement and intensity. As regards the intensity level one would be forgiven for thinking it was blood and thunder judging by the attitude of the referee. He was one of these jokers who feels when players are contesting the ball they must say "excuse me please". Any deficit in manners was punishable by a free or a yellow card. Clearly a lot of these fellows never played football in their uneventful lives.
Both teams lined out as selected. The game was not too long in progress when one got the impression that Kerry were the better team without ever looking like world cup contenders. They also looked the more physically imposing, with a lot of big boys in the defence. Ruairi Murphy got the first point from play when he cut through and blazed over when a goal could have ensued. Dylan Geaney clipped one over, neat as you would expect from a Dingle Geaney. Thomas O'Donnell also put one over. Thomas is a tall, rangy, smart, skillful player and was one of the few Kerry forwards to impress. In that half we had a few wides and a couple were dropped short into the goalie's hands. We also had a few from frees
Kerry were largely the dominant team in the second half. We had points from play from Thomas O'Donnell, Cillian Burke, Ruairi Murphy, Tommy Cronin(sub) and Thomas O'Donnell in that order. Our final score came from a fine effort from a free via Devon Burns. Speaking of Devon, I don't recall either goalie having to make a save. That is a story in itself regarding the standard of forward play from both sides.
The most satisfying aspect of the match was the display of our defence, all of whom impressed from start to finish. Indeed , it is reasonable to suggest that they would have conceded far less than 0-6 if appropriate refereeing prevailed . I will mention one man, Joey Nagle, as being particularly prominent. There was one occasion when he was outfield and confronted by an onrushing Galway player with another player streaking past to create a dangerous overlap. Joey remained calm and just as the ball was being arrowed over his head he sprang catlike to intercept. It is invidious to single him out because all his comrades back there were equally effective . Perhaps another reason to single him out is because he was easily distinguishable with that blond head!
Our midfield was adequate with the long striding Cillian Burke making a big impression.
Now for the bad news. Apart from Thomas O'Donnell, our forwards were poor. Dylan Geaney did display a few nice touches but his reputation preceded him and he was watched like a hawk. As far as I can recall the other four forwards were replaced. Jack O'Connor was a fine minor but he does not seem to have progressed. He has plenty of time yet of course to blossom and may have another year at this grade. Not sure if that is the case.
I am not sure what happens next for this team as regards who is on the other side of the draw. Perhaps there are other lads to come in. Improvement is needed and of course this is an important tournament to facilitate that side of affairs.
P.S. I presume it was injury that precluded Sean O'Brien from being included in the panel.

They are into the final now and will play the winner of the Galway and Cork game which takes place next weekend. This is Jack O’Connor’s last year at u20. He was impressive for the minors in 2019 but unfortunately has had a lot of injury problems since. Sean O’Brien I was told was injured alright but should be back soon. The Sem contingent of Dara O’Callaghan, William Shine and Cian McMahon are also to come back in after the Hogan Cup final and there are others too who I’d have expected to be involved so I’m assuming the panel are carrying a few more injuries as well as O’Brien’s. Yesterday I thought they won comfortably without ever fully hitting stride. The awkward wind and the not far away from challenge game nature of the game contributed to that. I’d agree that Thomas O’Donnell and Joey Nagle were the standout performers.

They are into the final now and will play the winner of the Galway and Cork game which takes place next weekend. The final is against the first placed team in the other Group on the 12th of March. The other group was Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Laois and the results so far are Dublin 0-14 Kildare 2-8 Meath 0-17 Dublin 2-14 Laois 2-10 Kildare 0-16 Meath 0-8 Laois 1-6 Games next weekend Laois v Dublin Kildare v Meath Laois and Dublin both on 3 points so chances are high Kerry will be playing whoever wins that game. Kildare will get through if it's a draw in the Dublin Laois game and they beat Meath by more than 3 points. 2 draws, a one point game and a three point game in the four games are a clear sign the standard in this group was fairly even.

In my report on the u20 game I meant to comment on the further evidence of the poverty of North Kerry football. Apart from substitute Kevin Goulding from Ballyduff , there was no other player on the listed 24 man panel from that division. It has truly become a wasteland as a source of supplying players to our county teams. How long more can the county withstand such a lack of input from that huge constituency? Requires emergency remedial action.

It really is no coincidence though it takes scope to figure it out, disgraceful it is - wear the same thinking cap you wore re Covid conspiracy theory and you might crack it. Clue - I thought I was the only one who was gaslighted!

Peter Twiss mentioned it at a recent co. board agm that there was an over reliance on the killarney/east kerry district for players on the various county teams. I dont know what the answer is but its a problem

In the 25th minute, when excellent Dublin wing-back David O’Dowd fired over his second point of the game to bring the protagonists to parity (1-5 to 0-8), the Leinster side would have been very satisfied with the position that they found themselves in, helped enormously by Conor Tyrell’s fourth-minute goal. Kerry, on the other hand, knew that potentially going in on level terms at the interval would leave them facing an uphill struggle against the elements in the second half and, to that degree, inspired by in-form attackers Cillian Burke and top scorer Dylan Geaney, they hit a purple patch when the need was greatest. The livewire Geaney kicked over two superb points, either side of the pivotal score of the contest in the 28th minute when, after O’Dowd had superbly stopped Thomas O’Donnell from tapping home, Kerry full-forward Kevin Goulding was quickest to the loose ball, and he fed the rangy Burke for a simple, flicked finish at the back post. Five points to the good at half-time (1-10 to 1-5), Kerry started the second period strongly with Armin Heinrich and O’Donnell raising further white flags but, as conditions badly deteriorated as the rain came pouring down, the winners were faced into a rearguard battle for the remainder of the clash. Dublin, with Ryan O’Dwyer impressing in attack, fought tooth and nail to resurrect their situation, but with centre-back Heinrich and midfield captain Sean O’Brien well to the fore, Kerry always managed to retain the upper hand, even after losing substitute Adam Curran to a black card in the 56th minute. I really think there are some standouts players within this group that will go on to be big players for the seniors in a year or two. Sean O’Brien looks like a real star as well as Burke and D Geaney.
