Below is a reprint from this week Kerry's Eye and I hope I'm not infringing copyright in a practical sense. This is a subject very close to our hearts here and some may recall I suggested it as a worthy thesis subject, what with all the sports education and the Tralee Institute of Technology Sports Academy. I wouldn't underestimate the scope of it and lots of the issues are outside the control of the GAA e.g. rural depopulation.
I never thought I'd ever disagree with M Ó Muircheartaight on anything and I am sure most would feel the same, but I am afraid I cannot see Dublin being split as he hinted at on The Late Late a few weeks ago, though in fairness maybe Micheál was just making the point that a lot of Dublin players are losing out. I'd contend that such is the case in every county, Conor Cox for example. In any event how could you split them - would the Liffey be the line, what teams, age groups, codes, etc, methinks it would make Brexit look like child's play.
Hopefully we can make a positive collective contribution. With the greatest respect, we are not such headbangers after all, though some of us have our moments! Maybe we are the brains of Kerry GAA, or the balls? - time will tell!
I have a few articles on this, one in particular that suggests an inverse correlation between sports performance and money - now that puts a spanner in the works re the Dublin issue, though there is more to it than that - it is specifically about paying players, or not as the case may be, as opposed to financing the organisation itself.
I should also mention that the forum gets read by the powers that be - I recall a Croke Park head honcho saying as much as he felt they needed to stay win touch with grassroots and with technology giving everyone a voice that adds further to their work. Hopefully what happened with the FAI is a once off and what I find hard to understand is how it went on for so long, was it 15 years ago that Roy of The Rovers alerted people re admin staff travelling business class while players sat crushed in coach class -disgraceful, and where did the €50m go?
Time to act
In a wide ranging address to the Kerry GAA County Convention on Tuesday night, Chairman Tim Murphy promised a range of measures that will be taken in 2020.
Murphy also pinpointed the development of football in the North Kerry region amid growing concerns about the standard of football in the area.
“An Rúnaí (Peter Twiss), in his report has already made reference to the concentration of players involved at Senior level being from the eastern side of the county in comparison to the northern half. There is definitely an imbalance here that needs to be addressed. Football development in the northern part of the county has, over the years produced some of Kerry’s greatest footballers so it is incumbent on us to closely examine the issues with all the relevant stakeholders and devise a strategy to address the current situation.
