Disappointing game for Adrian yesterday. Anonymous for the most part and any time he did get on the ball, he seemed to give it away. Maybe a touch of stagefright? Had to go at halftime. Pity, as I felt he had been steadily growing into the role lately but I think he may have just played himself out of a final day starting berth. Adrians best game in a kerry shirt was when he was given the task of taking on o Shea in killarney . I think he would be the man to tackle Fenton. With Barry replacing him at half time or soon after Fenton is by a distance their most important player if you can negate him as Ruane did to an extent in first half Saturday then you are giving yourself a chance. Problem was ruane tired and Fenton doesn't ever seem to by putting fresh legs on him you can make sure he has an uncomfortable day. That would leave McCauley vs Moran which I think we would all be happy with that man is a walking red card I don't know how he gets away with the tackles he makes. With cian o Sullivan struggling with his hamstrings Mccarthy is needed at 6. I'd nearly go with the same team as the last day with exception of white for enright and put him on on mcaffreys wing. Howard is another problem as I think Crowley is made for Kilkenny and Murphy for scully. So I'd have beaglaoich on howard I thought he was excellent at wing back the last day. To complete the match ups I'd have Tom sull on mannion Morley on o Callaghan and foley on rock. What we have to do and previous incumbent rarely did was make changes early in around the middle we have the options Sherwood and Barry are good replacements with enright an option for the backs. I'd say this is the best squad we have had in ages hopefully JOD is back fit as he could be vital in last ten (assuming we are still in it). Does killian start or do we go with Tommy from the get go? If dublin don't start McMahon and we Start Tommy they only have two defenders able for him physically small and McCarthy if they leave fitzsimons on him Walsh could end up man of the match. Ps sorry for length of post !

Anyone see the WhatsApp message regarding Jason Foley/water bottle floating around today? Some lads have vivid imaginations... Wouldn't believe that.

Spillane could still be in pole position to mark Fenton despite a couple of poor games. Horses for course and all of that. Barry did well on Fenton in Tralee!

I’ve come across the mouthpiece brigade before from all counties & being honest we have some beauts down here as well. I had one of our fellows in front of me at one of the Dublin finals & he kept jumping up at every decision or incident which is very annoying. I tapped him on the shoulder & said, they can’t hear you from up here, you can’t get in to the pitch & if you are as good at football as you think you are you’d be in there. The muppet kept quiet for a while but started up again. I’ve seen fellows slating players at games & I know for a fact that they never played a County league game in their lives but man can they give out about lads.

Barry has done nothing to deserve to be in this far.
I don’t rate Spillane very highly but can’t see why he should be dropped- he wasn’t great on Sunday but did well prior to that.
When was the last time Barry gave us a good championship performance?

When was the last time Barry gave us a good championship performance? Quite harsh here on Barry IMO. Not much he could have done on his part considering he has been carrying a knock for the majority of the championship. He is good ball carrier and well able to pick a pass. He also provides another option on the kick outs which Spillane does not. This takes some of the high fielding responsibility off of Moran as we cannot rely on him every single time we go long. Some big calls to be made over the coming weeks from management

When he is fit he is our best option alongside Moran IMO. It’s great that other options have emerged like Spillane, Sherwood and O’Connor though. This was a massive area of concern before the season began but I’m pretty happy with how it has turned out. Keane has used the panel really well.

I dont get the clamour for Barry as it cant be based on form - so what is based on?

A fully fit Barry has done a lot more for Kerry in recent years than Spillane who was decent against Mayo but average otherwise
People were also calling for geaney to be dropped not so long ago because he hadn’t delivered in recent years either

FWIW I was up at the league final and I think he was really good that day in very difficult circumstances. At the end of the day Peter Keane will decide who plays and it doesn’t matter what anyone on here thinks. My own view is that Barry has a lot more upside potential than Spillane in the long term. We have seen enough in the past to know what he can do. If he is over his injuries and peter feels he can get a performance from him in the final he will be in there, he will come on as a sub at the very least I expect.

Rory O'Carroll played against Tyrone, poorly in my opinion. He was not on the panel for Sunday. I wonder will Jim Gavin include him in the panel for the final in view of the possible threat of Tommy Walsh?
I felt Brian O'Beaghlaigh did well on Sunday. His inclusion in the half back line along with Paul Murphy would leave us , to use the modern lingo, vertically challenged and vulnerable to Dublin's kicks out against Howard/Scully? There is no doubt about the football ability of Paul and Brian. Speaking about wingbacks, I wonder would Jason be more suited to wing back with his terrific speed etc. But then who slots into the right corner. Either way I would be surprised if Jason is demoted. He has a lot to offer and will improve considerably after another winter in the gym.
Midfield is another conundrum. Obviously David Moran starts there. Adrian has lost a bit of ground on the evidence of the last two matches. Still he works hard and has pace and perhaps management will start him against Brian Fenton. I am not sure of the current status of Jack Barry , not having seen enough of him. Jack Sherwood has impressed but is he an out and out midfielder? Perhaps management perceive his role as an early replacement. If Tommy Walsh starts at FF he could move out for our kicks out. Sean O'Shea for Brian Fenton, with Paul on the forty and Tommy at FF? A puzzle indeed.
I am assuming JO'D is out of the picture. A shame.
Somebody has commented about sacrificing Tom O'Sullvan's attacking instincts to become a man marker. I have no problem with that role. Marking an attacker out of the game is a defender's primary function. Doing it against a footballer of the first rank, Peter Harte, makes it all the more commendable. Tyrone supporters must be asking themselves whatever happened one of our star men?
Peter has rotated his personnel from 16 to 26 all through the year. It will be interesting to see who makes the subs bench for the final. Brian Kelly, Killian Young and David Shaw are the only three from the subs bench last Sunday who have not had game time.
When Niall Morgan was coming up the field last Sunday to take a long range free Tommy Walsh confronted him to stop his progress. What was he trying to achieve, that Niall would get disheartened and return to his goal? Asinine behaviour. That type of gamesmanship repels me. The upshot of the incident? Tommy gets a schoolboy yellow card. On another day that could be a costly yellow card. Can and must do better Tommy.
It intrigues me how various infractions creep into game and eventually they go unpunished. Over the past number of years we repeatedly see players in possession being pushed out over the sideline and rather than getting a free it results in line ball to the opposition. Lately, an infraction that is being tolerated is the hand off which has always been regarded as a foul. We saw it a couple to times in Navan and very frequently last Sunday. For example, Cathel McShane made liberal use of it. If you push a player in the back you are rightly penalised but if give a hand off, that is a push in the chest and forcibly indeed, you are allowed to carry on with impunity. Needless to say the experts in the media never comment on it, merely saying he got past so and so as if he was not there. Another infraction in both hurling and football in full of the referee is the mayhem at the throw in. Increasing lawlessness does not adequately describe the way our two games are going.

I just think your comments are unwarranted towards a guy who has been battling injury all year. We do not possess a secondary midfielder to complement Moran who performs consistently week in week out. Spillane has had one good championship game this year - Two at a push. He has not been up to the required standard the past two weeks so a change is definitely needed. I, personally, would go with Barry for the reasons I have already mentioned. Sherwood off the bench can make a big impact as seen on Sunday. I think he is better off the bench as opposed to starting the game

It's based on the fact that Barry has done well on Fenton in the past. But thats no indicator of current form It's not based on form at all. I don't rate Barry that highly but to be fair to him he has done well every time he has come up against Fenton. Also I don't think you need to be in great form to carry out a man marking role. If Barry can limit Fenton's influence I wouldn't mind if he is not involved in the game either.

I thought he was poor last year and also in the 2 semi finals in 2017 against Mayo. I dont see Spillane as a world beater and was surprised initially to see him even on the panel but he's done well enough so I would see him as being in the box seat - if not him then maybe Sherwood who has done well coming off the bench

Totally agree with the comments about pushing - a slight touch to the back of a forward yields a free but hand offs by a forward (or indeed any other player - Aidan O Shea uses forearm) are acceptable and pushing a player over the sideline seems to be a skill. On the other side if every such contact is blown up we would have a procession of frees from start to finish - consistency is what is lacking. With the excitement of vctory on Sunday I nearly forgot why I was so frustrated with Deegan at half time - it was his application of the advantage. Advantage is a great rule but he seemed to have a very short 5 seconds on a few important occassions against Kerry in the first half which made a difference.

Unfortunately, most coaches are now instructing players on the ‘hand off’ technique. The two handed push to the chest is a variation of the same tactic that referees are not blowing for. Dublin players have another very simple and effective ‘3rd man crossing’ type of obstruction that prevents an opponent from making a tackle on the hand passed ball receiver. Referees do not seem to be picking up on it as a foul but it buys the ball receiver that bit of time and space before an effective challenge can be made. Either we get wise to it or we will be subjected to it too. Its not always easy to spot but it's hugely effective. At this stage - James is on track to be ready for the final. That could change, unfortunately.

A short few weeks ago we had Sherwood bashing, that was put to bed fairly fast. Now it’s Jack Barry’s turn. He was one of our best performers in the league final. We have a massive task ahead on Sept 1st, time to get behind all our players.

As usual Veteran another quality post. The handoff is a really annoying one, as for what goes on before a throw in especially in hurling can be ridiculous at times ! On the Tommy Walsh yellow I would agree totally silly stuff. What preceded that pleased me though 2/3 tyrone lads had converged on Sean oshea for a chat I assume asking him about his free taking technique, Tommy took it upon himself to join said conversation and was busy swatting flies from the Tyrone boys chest when Morgan arrived. What he did after was silly for such an experienced man but I liked the intention he had in backing up his team mate with his substantial presence.

Veteran, to address 1 of the points you raised - the Rory O'Carroll experiment is almost certainly over. Against Tyrone he wasn't at the pace of the game at all - balls were flying around him that he couldn't react to.

A short few weeks ago we had Sherwood bashing, that was put to bed fairly fast. Now it’s Jack Barry’s turn. He was one of our best performers in the league final. We have a massive task ahead on Sept 1st, time to get behind all our players. Correct we don’t want to be bashing anyone but the beauty of the forum is that we can tell it straight , otherwise the forum Is lightweight and no benefit. Regarding our midfield it has underperformed all year we literally have been flying on one wing and sometimes no wing . It has been like going into the boxing ring with one hand tied behind ones back ! Sherwood offers us hope we have found a new role for him and so far it’s been huge he s so comfortable on the ball he’s been part of all the good go forward ball with his top rate carrying and passing . Jack Barry is capable of something similar but we just haven’t seen it only in limited snapshots . Looks like he can offer a lot more but for injury or for whatever reason we have not seen the best of him not even close looks like we will need him too in some role but only if he’s firing on all cylinders.

I would have a few question marks over the management and the tactics employed on Sunday.
1 - The positioning of Jason Foley on Cathal McShane. It should have always have been Morley on him and it would concern me for the match ups for the final.
2 - Paul Murphys role in the first half. Reminded me of the 2017 Mayo replay when Murphy didnt seem to know what to do.
3 - The forward play in the first half. Did we not expect Tyrone to have 12 men inside the 45. We didnt seem to.
4 - Coming out so early in the 2nd half was a rookie mistake. Especially after we made a few subs. Let Tyrone out first and then Mickey Harte has to figure out what do do with our changes in the first few minutes of the 2nd half instead of while they are still inside in the dressing room.
Obviously they got a lot right (Tom Sullivan on Harte), the kick outs were mostly good, subs at half time worked, positional change involving the Tommy Walsh sub and the way they made the sub with Foley pretending not to realise he was going off was smart.
Thing is, we will need to get more or less everything right in the final.
