That’s probably the game plan you’re describing defensive midfielders and attacking wing backs . If say Roscommon or Mayo or Tyrone are doing due diligence analysis on the scoring or attacking threat of our midfield they would not need to have any defensive plan for them at all, none. To me this is capitulation before a single ball is kicked in the game . Can we not even keep them guessing not even once in a while deliver a long ball to a forward , once in a while drift into and advanced position , shoot for the point now and again, Carry the ball at pace up the field get on the end of a movement and score a goal.do a one two and keep sprinting forward looking for the return pass,Cause some bit of mayhem and chaos even once in a while .? A five yard hand pass to your nearest team mate is just too easy for the opposition . We’re not working the mental side of the midfield battle that is am I supposed to chase you around all day or do You have to keep an eye on me too in case I occasionally make a dangerous move up field . If I know you carry zero offensive weapons in your midfield sure I may as well keep pressing high all afternoon. Making life really difficult for the opposition defense.

Having a midfielder that can "ghost" into good attacking positions has significant worth. Our midfielders are too inclined to play things very safe imo. We're not advocating reckless abandon here, but each player from the cb up needs to offer an attacking threat.

I think the licence to go forward to date has been given to Sherwood & Tom O’Sullivan predominantly; I know Peter Crowley bagged the winner vs Dublin but that was one last all out effort to get the win. The absence of Sherwood the last day and the move of Tom to the full back line robbed us of this attacking option - Jack Barry in particular seems to be the defensive option and rarely gets forward - we need a partner for him who will pick off a few scores and pop up closer to our opponents goal than has been the case up until now - who that is only time will tell.

Some interesting selections, looking forward to seeing Graham O'Sullivan start. He looks to have loads of potential. By all accounts JOD has been fully fit for a number of weeks and is mad for road. Good to see DC back. Musical chairs between the sticks continues! Strong enough looking bench.

I'm hearing (could be bullsh*t) that Crokes will name Shane Murphy as Kerry captain for the year. It's highly debatable whether he will be first-choice keeper so are we going to have yet another year with a non-playing captain?
I would have thought Gavin White would be the obvious choice - he's the likeliest of the Crokes lads to be a regular (a certainty, surely, barring injury) and he's a leader by example on the pitch.

What's the story with Paul Geaney?? Paul had a surgical procedure recently and is recuperating- likely to be absent for a few more weeks.

Correct and hopefully Paul G comes back ready to rock when really needed. We won't be seeing him for a league final either i suspect and in truth, no need to see this man now untill the phoney season is over and we're down to serious business with the Super 8s' in July.

Interesting to see Diarmuid at midfield. Not sure if he is ready for the hurly burly of that position yet. Graham O’Sullivan is another good prospect. A lively, hardy, enterprising merchant.
A little disappointed that Gavin O’Brien has lost out but somebody had to if the golden boy was to be accommodated.
I have written about this puzzling, puzzling to me at least, selectorial deciision before. Why is that a predominately left footed kicker, in this case David Clifford, is selected in the left corner, while a predominately right footed kicker, in this case Kevin McCarhy, is selected in the right corner. James is often selected in the left corner when one would have thought he is more suited to the other corner with his strong left leg. That is the corner from where he ravaged defences in 2014.. Similarly Paidi used to select Aodhain MacGearailt on the right wing with Noel Kennelly on the left wing when the opposite wings would be more appropriate based on their stronger kicking leg.

Foresee issues in the full back line later in the year. Too many backs whose forte is bombing forward. Would like to see JF alongside Sherwood.

Not being smart but surely because number 13 doesnt have to play in the right corner and number 15 doesnt have to play in the left corner. Kerry under PK play with two inside anyway, which will probably be Clifford and Tommy on Sunday (until we are in trouble in the middle and Tommy has to win a few kickouts). County League taking precedence this weekend for me so looking forward to the usual eye few witness reports - hope you can make the trip Veteran and you are not subject to the agony of having to decipher the Radio Kerry commentary.

If DOConnor could cut loose at midfield it would be a massive boost to Kerrys prospects. I am delighted he is selected there.
I think Graham oSullivan has the makings of a Centre half back and there would be scores in a half back line of Tom Sullivan, Graham oSullivan and Paul Murphy. I remain to be convinced about Gavin Crowley to be honest.
It remains to be seen whether TW will be as influential in the forwards during the summer when the "mark" will be gone.

It's not as if it's their first chance to pick someone and Murphy, White and Burns all got the chance to captain Kerry last season, and i guess all felt as uncomfortable as the next in the postion.Let Paul Murphy keep it and Crokes can start the revolution of letting the manager pick it from now on.

Not crazy IMO. There are 3 or 4 very suitable non-crokes players that they could nominate. Why put pressure on young players just stepping up to intercounty level or not guaranteed their place? P Murphy, Geaney, Moran, P Crowley. Off the top of my head - all are guarantees to start, have tons of experience, and won't be distracted by the captaincy. Its a not like Crokes are going anywhere in the county championship - they will be there or thereabouts every year for the foreseeable future so will have plenty opportunities to nominate the captain in the years ahead.

I don’t think any other club would give up their right to nominating one of their players as captain so I wouldn’t expect Crokes to. I also wouldn’t expect Peter Keane to pick a player just because he was captain.

Captaincy wasn't an issue in 2014. It only ever becomes an issue when Kerry don't win.

The controversy over captain s appointment will keep going unabated unrltil the archaic rule is consigned to the history books some day . One may say it’s only a problem when we lose , everything is a problem when we lose!! and yes sometimes moderate or unqualified leadership can contribute to a loss and some times we can win in spite of moderate or unqualified leadership but when we win its dosent mean the captaincy wasn’t a problem it just means we overcame it ,so we gloss over it. The same way we gloss over all deficiencies when we win.

As a lot of others have said before I think too much is made of the nominating of the captain, The county champions nominate someone to a limited ceremonial role – accept the cup, walk at the front in the parade, take part in the coin toss. They can’t stop the manager deciding who makes the decisions and gives instructions on the pitch, who gives the last rallying call before throw in, who will have a word with the referee if necessary.
I think Peter will see it that way.

If the role is simply ceremonial why not appoint a non-playing captain as other sports do? If that were the case Crokes could nominate Colm Cooper for the role and what an addition that would be. Then Peter would be able to nominate an on the field leader who would be relatively assured of his place.
I used to hold a traditional view on this one until last year when I saw too many young lads have to deal with the distraction of the captaincy along with their debut season with the Seniors.
Other large ball codes give a vital role to the on-field captain and we also have to ask how much of Dublin's current success is due to the stability of Cluxton's captaincy.
But whatever - let's leave this one for the winter as there won't be any change this year and try to make the best of what our current imperfect system throws up.
