A brilliant touch form Peter Keane after the match to come on board the supporters bus and thank the Kerry fans for supporting and travelling as shown on Donal Barry's twitter account yesterday evening. Ten out of ten for PK. Did he mention the followers while he was at it? Google @barrydonal and you'll see the clip. I don't make that distinction myself so have no meas on it.

I was at both of the Tyrone and Cavan matches recently. Kerry played in a similar manner for both - keeping it tight especially in the first half and attacking more as the second half wore on. Cavan were excellent in the first half - they could do no wrong in front of goals with some fantastic attacking play. However, their defence reminded me of ours up to last year - very prone to giving away soft frees with lazy tackling. Our defence has certainly improved in that regard thankfully. Most of the new players did very well. I wish Killian Spillane was more positive in looking for the ball - he did not show a couple of times when there was plenty of space in front of him and the ball was coming up that side of the pitch. I hope they persist with him as I think he has the ability and perhaps just needs to become more confident. Likewise Adrian - played reasonably well but I am not certain he is a county midfielder. I think there may be a berth for him half back or half forward as he has great physicality. I think we lack physical presence in centre back - cant fault Paul as he is a warrior but he just lacks the sheer size needed for that position - I think Morley, Gavin Crowley, or the afore-mentioned Adrian may be better options for that position. I think JamesO will have his work cut out to get his place back. Dara Moynihan again looked excellent and very positive when he came on - James has been too inclined to go sideways or backwards in recent years, which is a pity as he is a great ball carrier in close quarters and will inevitably get a free. The more I see of Stephen O Brien the more convinced I become that he is better suited to coming on as a sub when the defenders legs are gettting tired. His explosive runs would make a huge impact in that period, whereas I think he looks average when playing the whole match, sometimes running into cul-de-sacs. His tackling also is not as strong as some of the others. Paul G is much maligned - even though he probably has not played well by his standards, he is still a central figure. He is much better suited to a dry ball and his ability to turn and beat a defender is second to none. The really bright spots for me yesterday were Gavin O Brien, Mark Griffin, and Diarmuid O Connor. Gavin looks a natural at this level - has great physical presence and very good ball handler. Along with Mark G they made a big impact yesterday - Mark G looks like a calf out in fresh grass further up the field - hopefully he gets to stay out in the prairie. Diarmuid lost a few handy possessions against Tyrone, but these were much reduced yesterday and I think he will turn into one of our main players within next 2-3 years. Special mention for Brian Begley yesterday - a superb second half and really brought the game to Cavan. Would be interested to know what role Mark Griffin played when he came on? Did he actually play in the forwards? As he came on for Diarmuid O'Connor

I’m not sure if this is an example of the distinction meant but there was two guys seated behind me in the stand in Breffni Park yesterday and they didn’t the first 55mins whining and criticising everything the players were doing. Nothing was good enough. Extremely irritating and while I would never encourage blind, uncritical commentary this was as far from ‘supporting’ as you might get. Not sure why they bothered traveling or were getting out of it. Anyway, they quietened down once Kerry drew level and there wasn’t a word out of them for the remainder of the match 😃👍

Strange day in Breffni Park. Lucky not to be much further behind at half time. Way too defensive for the whole half. For long periods we had our entire 15 players inside our '65. The one comment I heard from the Cavan supporters was "I didn't think we were due to play Tyrone today". And despite the defensiveness Cavan still kicked 11 points against us. They opened us up several times right down the middle. The biggest groan from the Kerry supporters in the 1st half was when Sean O'Shea received the ball on his own 65 and kicked the ball 50m forward to absolutely nobody, there was no Kerry player ahead of him. Second half and Kerry dropped the ultra defensive mindset and pushed right up on the Cavan defence. Tremendous pressing and workrate put the Cavan half back line which cut us apart in the first half under so much pressure they couldn't work the ball to their forwards. I think Shane Ryan only had four kickouts in the second half and two of those were in added time. Cavan lost some of their influential players through injury whilst our subs all made an impact. They still had the chances to seal the game in the second half but their keeper missed 3 long range frees and strangely they took 2 close in frees short and were turned over. Proves the necessity of having a top quality free taker. Their only clear goal chance was in the final minute when a high ball was punched just over the crossbar.
Be interesting whether Kerry will play the same numbers back mindset against the Dubs on Saturday. I think they'd eat us up if we did. But if we can put in the same shift shown in the second half and feed our dangerous forwards then we should rattle them.

Thanks to all who reported on the match. I have repeatedly said that Radio Kerry do an incomparable job with their GAA coverage.but listening to the match commentary can be painful and frustrating. Essentially what I want from a match commentary is who has the ball, what way a free is going , why a player got a card , who has got wind advantage- just basic facts. That should be the job of the match commentator. Then , when there is a pause the co-commentator should but in . That tended to work with Garry and Weeshie. Not at present I fear. Tim and Ambrose tend to talk at the same time- both seeming to do the other person’s job. Surely, the producer should step in with some advice. I do not want to be too critical because of the extensive coverage the GAA is given by Radio Kerry but it would only take a small adjustment to make the whole exercise perfect.
We seemed to struggle badly in the ffirst half , seemingly revisiting some of our old habits. For example, Mickmack commented on fellows turning their backs when Shane was trying to set up strategic kicksout. Donie Buckley will surely address that. Players like PG playing too far out . Surely we could at least keep two guys up. Talking about PG I feel some guys here are a little too critical of him. I have no doubt when the opposing manger is giving instructions he says, look PG is the pain danger here , clamp down on him at all times even if that means double teaming him. I suspect that was happening a lot yesterday and in spite of that he apparently kicked two marvelous points and was fouled for a few scores. Doesn’t sound too bad to me.
It would appear we were more positive in second half and received our reward. Two more precious points in the bag which lessens the pressure with the Dubs coming to town.
Sean O’Shea will be playing during the week for UCC. Would it not be fair to him to give him a rest next Saturday?
P.S. From what I have been told and from what I have seen this offensive mark is a crackpot idea. Listening to the lads on the Sunday Game one would need to be lawyer to interpret it correctly. There was a caption on the screen outlining the rule which ran to ten lines or more. Simple? Who dreams up this madcap ideas? And after all that you are rewarded for gathering the ball against your chest. High fielding? The referee is supposed to adjudicate on this act of the constitution when he cannot be trusted to count three consecutive bandpasses. May God protect us from lawmakers who have no feel for the game.

Veteran I agree with your take on Radio Kerry but not sure if that simple adjustment can be made given the problems they have had replacing Gary on the regular Saturday and Sunday Sports shows.
On the offensive mark, I dont think it was brought in to award a "high catch". IMO it was brought in to dissuade teams just dropping back sweepers for the sake of it. Teams were afraid to kick a ball into a full forward as if he got the ball he would generally be bottled up by the sweeper. The back was also likely to stay behind his man and not try get out in front (in case he gets turned and there is a goal chance). With this offensive mark, you can play an accurate 30 m pass into a full forward and he can take his mark and kick a point.
But overall on the new rules you are correct - its just asking too much of already overburdened referees.

The mark cheapens both defensive and attacking play. A cop out in a tight defensive situation and a cheap score for a forward. Hopefully it will be put in the dust bin after the league.

Miserable aul day. Our forwards were all but nullified in first half, apart from a few frees won. Continuously pushed wide and into corners before being turned over if no free won. Seanie’s free taking simply cannot be overstated. Incredible striking of a wet sodden ball from distance. Kept us in touch at half time as we were very disjointed in the first half. Cavan played very well in first half and took all of their chances. Their dominance through the middle put huge pressure on our kickouts and we lost a number of them that generated scores. Shane wasn’t blessed with many clear options but he still kicked poorly in that half. The second half was much better, tackling much sharper and the Cavan penetration dissipated. We wore them down and worked really hard to generate more scoring opportunities. After fluffing a few opportunities the scoreboard started to crank up. The Kerry subs all made key contributions. If the game continued Kerry would have pulled further away. Mark, Mikey and David and other subs were pulled to the sidelines for grueling sprint work post match, tough grafting. Can’t see fitness being an issue. It was a tough test yesterday, even if Cavan aren’t top opposition. We still had to work our way out of a tough spot. The persistence and maturity of performance stood out in the second half. A shout out to big Tommy who had a couple of key link possessions on the wing that resulted in scores at key times later in second half.

Shane Ryan has a huge volume of work to do on his kickouts as do Kerry on the whole kick out theme. Can't really see the absurdity of the goal keeping rotation idea being in vogue this year.

How did Jack Sherwood fare? apologies i left him out of my initial game reaction - i though he did really really well. won almost every ball that went in. full back line was untroubled really the last day, majority of the cavan scores came from distance and runners from the half back line.
