Just around the corner now. Is this game fixed for Tralee or Killarney? I presume Shane Ryan will be the first name on the new team sheet with Shane Murphy club tied. Looking forward to seeing the first team selected and to hitting the road again for the spring. It must be an exiting time for the young players starting off. The best of luck to PK & Co. in 2019. Ciarrai abu............!and hopefully a championship tie with the Dubs in early Autumn at some point!

Will the Crokes lads play? When is their semi final? I would love to see Shane Ryan in goals though. I think he is our best option there. PK's first team sheet will be very interesting. I wonder will Tyrone be a bit sharper than us considering they'll have a couple of games played?

Crokes play on 16th Feb so Kerry will have to do without their contingent until at least then & maybe longer - if Crokes reach final then Kerry will have played majority of league without them. Interesting times alright think Kerry should have participated in McGrath Cup just to get some game time into the newcomers- challenge games are never the same.

Is there a rule that's says players involved in the club championships can't play in the league or was that just the previous policy?

Is there a rule that's says players involved in the club championships can't play in the league or was that just the previous policy? There is no rule, usually comes down to agreement between Club and County Management over availability of players. In 12, 13, 14 when Crokes lost three Club Semi Finals all their Kerry players had played in the McGrath Club and opening rounds of the League. In 2017 Pat O'Shea didn't let them play any Intercounty games and they won the All Ireland Club. There is unfair pressure being put on players to choose between their Club and and their Kerry position. The only solution is a long overdue moving of the Club final dates to pre Christmas and finish all competitions in the same calendar year.

Pat O'Shea is correct to hold his set up together. The problem is the three month delay between the conclusion of the provincial finals and the All-Ireland final on Paddys Day. This needs to change.

Much prefer it to Saturday night games in Tralee at this time of the year.

With retirements, injuries and some players absent, might we be vulnerable in the league. It is expected that Peter will be giving youth it's chance but that will also mean inexperience. A lot depends on other teams priorities, hard to know where their preparations might be, but I'd be worried about our capabilities of doing well in the league.

To be honest I don't care what team PK picks for our first game.
I want to see at least see some sort of work being done on:
A defensive system, I don't care if it's man to man; a sweeper or some sort of mutant hybrid as long as there has been some thought put into it.
A style of play. And some thought given to the forwards and positioning and running lines etc.
A kick out system.

If the crokes lads are still available I would like to see Shane Murphy in goals. He had a great county championship and with a proper kick out strategy we could see the best of him.
Something different at mifield other than Barry/Moran axis would be nice. Tom O'Sullivan in the half backs. JOD starting in the corner.

Would like to see everyone available for the Tyrone game - a win here could be a good launching pad for the entire year. Maybe Pat O'Shea will allow his charges get one league game?
Irrespective of the Tyrone result, the Cavan game in the second round is absolutely huge.

Is sean o'shea not a bit slow for midfield? Maybe give tom O'Sullivan a run there? He has the pace and stamina, and can attack and defend. An unorthodox choice maybe.
Don't think mark Griffin has the ball skills for midfield. Always think he looks a bit jittery on the ball. Apart from Mark O'Connor who were the other midfield pairings on those minor teams and where are they now?

He’s untapped potential would cause huge problems for any defense and can defend as good as any fits the bill for Dynamic midfield player probably would need a taller partner for balance but not essential I’d like to see Shane Ryan get a run too see what everyone’s talking about

I can imagine Brian Fenton and James McCarthy thinking to themselves if they saw Tom Sullivan lining out at midfield against them in the championship in Croker................

If you want to buy into the adulation of an overated Dublin midfield good luck to you. as Jim Larkin once said some thing like “ we made them look great because while they were standing we were kneeling now get up rise “ We have operated the past few years with midfield s that neither attacked nor defended with any great effect ,in other words Fenton , Mc Carthy , mcAuley have had an armchaiir ride because we had a mindset that focused more on the opposition than on our own potency . Let’s not obsess at how good the others are and let’s not give a too much ponderance to what the opposition think .

There is nothing over rated about Fenton & McCarthy, both are phenomenal athletes and phenomenal footballers. Fenton is probably the best midfielder to emerge since Jacko.

Andrew Barry (Na Gaeil) also played midfield that year. 2016 Mike Breen (Beaufort) & Mark Ryan (Rathmore) 2017 Barry Mahony (St Senans)& Diarmuid O’Connor (Na Gaeil) Of these Diarmuid O'Connor impressed me the most as a minor but I wasn't as impressed last year when he was with the u-20s. Based on that I'm not sure he's an option this year but definitely one for the future. Of the others Barry O'Sullivan and Andrew Barry played for Kerry in the league last year and may well feature this year. Mike Breen and Mary Ryan also played for the u-20s last year but I don't know much about Foley. I haven't included the 2018 midfielders as they are still u-18.

Andrew Barry didn't look like a natural midfielder for the county u21s the year before last and didn't feature for the Kerry seniors again after the Monaghan game, was it last year? when he played at centre back. Finding new midfield players is going to be a huge issue for Kerry this year. They may not be there currently.

Kerry were into decline after the two great teams from the Jacko and Darragh eras. Thats the natural order of things even for Kilkenny in hurling.
Tyrone did too and Mayo will when Higgins, Keegan and a few more do too.
So Kerry should be looking at the new 5 years confidently if the natural order still prevailed.
I am not sure that the natural order of a great era followed by a fallow period will apply to Dublin. It certainly wont if they continue to produce one top drawer player each year as they have done since 2015. Fenton, Small, Con, Howard. If that keeps up then the game is up.
The new voice in the dressingroom should give Kerry a bounce. No player is sure of his place and a few new players will be unearthed. For instance i think Gavin oBrien might be a success. The minors from 2014 and later years should start coming on stream but most of them may well decide that the reward is not worth the effort. The one common thread running through the books written by Tomas,Gooch, Donaghy, Galvin etc was the extent to which they were willing to sacrifice so much including personal careers for football.
That may no longer be the case to the same extent especially if playing second fiddle to Dublin is whats on the horison.
The next few years will be interesting. If Kerry could fix just one thing, a lot could come right.... retain sufficient from their own restarts. That would be my number one priority as of now.

When is Jack Barry back? Cannot see Tommy Walsh having a role to play in midfield - if he has a role it will be at 14 most likely. He is good in the air and has great strength but pace and constant running would not be strengths at this stage of his career. PK interview is clearly an attempt to put realism on expectations - he is also dismissive of the league, particularly with the rule changes that will be dropped again come championship. People need to let him try players and if we drop to D2 so what if it helps him in the longer term. Maintaining D1 status is derirable but really is a bonus for 2019, learning about his squad is paramount.

Its a the best competition presently and most entertaining. We will win nothing coming from division 2. Tommy walsh in midfield is a joke, He is not fast enough or agile enough and one of his hamstrings is not 100%. Id have thought we would have a solid league given lads are trying to impress PK.

Can't see how you rate the league as the best competition - the Championship is the competition to win and always has been. GAA themselves have shown the league is secondary by the use of the competition to experiment with the rules. Where else but the league can PK try things out and see if players can step up to the inter county scene - we have berrated managers in the past for not experimenting and going with the same old faces. We are on a steep learning curve and if needed the league can and should be secondary in developing our squad for the championship. I don't want to be in Division 2 but I would prefer to find out about players before the summer - hopefully we can blood and test players and maintain D1.

Im not saying its the most important obviously its not but it is the most competitive and entertaining. The championship has been poor hence the introduction of the super 8s. Ive no problem with experimentation but the league is important its the spring board for the Summer ahead.
