I'm too young to remember him as a footballer but himself and his Terrace talk team broke new ground and completely changed how a local radio station interacts with it's audience in the modern internet era through the show and the site.
A great loss to Kerry GAA and the GAA.
RIP.

He was a goalkeeper. He was a player. He was a manager. He was a commentator. He was a gentleman. He was the voice of Kerry football. He was radio Kerry Sport. Click on the following link for some of his best moments in the commentary box. www.radiokerry.ie/radio-kerry-mourns-loss-weeshie-fogarty/

More an institution than an individual, the ability to ask the question we all wanted to know the answer to was the cornerstone of his media skill IMO.
There will be some chat at the welcome party - can you hear their voices?
Codladh sámh though there will no resting.
P.S. Only just heard of 'The Secret of Kerry', his take on 'The Kerry Ingredient' - what didn't he do?

And also an ref!!He reffed an All Ireland minor final ,I think He reffed the 1982 all ireland semi final when Offaly beat Galway. He leaves a huge legacy in the archived interviews and written material with former players and people of interest. His enthusiasm was infectious. He was quick to praise SK for being a fine side seconds after his beloved Legion were beaten in the replay of the county final a few years ago. He had a touch of class about him. A life well lived. And of course his "goooooal for the gooooooch" and " what is a beyonce" moments brought great levity to us. RIP Wheesie.

Weeshie was Mr.Kerry really for those home and abroad all over the world for so many years. Weeshie will be sadly missed but leaves behind so many happy memories. May the green and gold sod that you were so proud of rest gently on you Weeshie. RIP Weeshie Fogarty.

A sad day for sport in Kerry. Weeshie had an instinctive love for sport and achieved a lot before he ever took a microphone in his hand. I think he refereed 3 All Ireland Semis and might well have got the 1983 Final had things worked out differently.
He left a huge volume of work in all those interviews, not just with sportspeople, but with people from all sectors of society. His work on the DVD with Christy O'Riordan in which all surviving Kerry captains ( up tp 2009) were interviewed was also so important in recording that history.
I must dig out the 1997 commerative cassette & listen to himself and Liam Higgins again.
May he rest in peace.

RIP Weeshie.
He helped me out immeasurably on a project I had a few years ago. Always had the mic with him to record a conversation in case he met anyone with a story.
His football knowledge was second to none. I'll thumb through his book "My Beautiful Obsession - Chasing the Kerry Dream" during the week.
He and Gary's finest hour was probably doing the Kerry/Mayo replay in Limerick...the end of extra time saw both men's raw emotion coming to the fore...pure Kerry.

While we celebrated the careers of the recently retired players, and so we should have, it's just as important to celebrate Weeshies. Not too many can say they played with their county at every grade, went on to ref at every grade and then over ever grade in the media

It is indeed a lovely tribute. Did Wheesie work in the hospital at the same time as Dr Eamonn o Sullivan at any stage i wonder I believe Dr Eamonn interviewed him for the job. Wheesie is irreplaceable. I was thinking today that whoever hired him for Radio Kerry made an inspired decision. He was a broadcasting natural though he came to it relatively late on. Someone else said it, for me he was Mr. Kerry.

Some great memories over the years listening to Weeshie and Liam Higgins (and later Gary O'Sullivan) commentating for RK on various Kerry games.
Before TG4 began televising a lot of NFL games and smart phones came along RK was the only way to really access an away league game on a sunday for me.
Stating that makes me feel old!
He is an irreplaceable character and had a great turn of phrase, the fact that he played the game to a high level and subsequently became a top referee gave him a unique and balanced perspective on the game and this is missing from a lot of analysts today I feel.
The other notable aspect about Weeshie is the fact that his media career was the second chapter in his work life. I'm not sure how he ended up working for RK but he took to it like a duck to water. His books and the terrace talk website are a great legacy.
Finally, we live in an era where the concept of the "job for life" is no longer there for most. So switching roles and learning new skills as we age will become more necessary. Weeshie is a great example and role model in relation to this. RIP.

Weeshie's knowledge and passion for Legion, Killarney, Kerry, and GAA made him unique. Great story on balls.ie
Over 25 years ago, Dee Butcher was in hospital with Weeshie. One morning at 5am, Weeshie went across the ward to his bed, and woke him up. Weeshie says to Dee , 'I have it, I have a commentary in my head and I have to sing it off to you. It's Crokes and Legion in a county final, there's ten minutes to go and they're level. Can I sing it off to you?' Dee said, 'fire away'. So Weeshie went hell for leather for five or six minutes, and then a nurse came through from the nurses' station, and said, 'What's the commotion lads? It's 5.15 in the morning!' And Weeshie says, 'Leave me alone girl! There's two minutes to go and they're still level!'

John B once said there was two Kingdoms and Weeshie replied that he hoped one day to travel from one to the other - of course there can be no doubt but that he did.
How many Gods are there though? Hint - how many religions are there and bearing in mind that while the GAA has some disciples, it might be lacking in saints!
On reflection and what occurred to me in recent days was that though Weeshie had a lot to say, I don't ever recall him wasting a single word, and that must be some record.
His like will not be heard again, ní bheidh a leithéid chuala arís!
