Was it Dingle V Crokes in the Minor Co Final three years ago ?
Club sides wiped out early this year with only Gneeveguilla (walkover) and Dingle (beat another club side) progressing. Timing of the competition is as usual a big issue with so many students in the USA for the summer. Will the U21 Club championship take place this year - none for the past two years I think.

From Austin Stacks Web Page
Stacks Young Guns Just Come Up Short in very Positive Performance JULY 25, 2018 BY MARTIN COLLINS
U21 Co. Championship Rd 1: Dingle 0-14; Austin Stacks 2-7 (13).
On a beautiful summers evening (Tues 24th July) i nDaingean Uí Chúis we just came up short to a very good Dingle side in round one of the U21 Co. Championship. Wayne Quillinan and John O’Sullivan from our Senior Selectors and Darragh Long from our Minor Selectors took charge of our U21s and could have come home winners but for a brilliant defensive performance by the home side, especially in the last quarter.
Dingle started well and led by five points to no score after fourteen minutes. We at that stage had registered four wides, which on another evening could have yielded scores.
So it took us 18 minutes to get our first score but boy was it worth waiting for. Michael Slattery won possession in the centre of the pitch, jinked his way through that solid Dingle defence that we referred to earlier and from the edge of the square unleashed an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net – and the only goal that might have surpassed in recent times was the one scored by David Clifford in Clones last Sunday.
Dingle added three more points before half time while we added two – one from play by Michael Linnane, put through by Podge Looney and a pointed free by Donagh McKivergan. This left us three adrift at the break (0-8 to 1-2).
Unlike the first half we had a brilliant start to the second half . Joseph O’Connor – who along with Michael O’Gara, gave a very solid performance at mid-field – opened the scoring after just a minute with a lovely point. Then inside the 35th minute a quickly taken free by Donagh McKivergan was pounced on by Michael Linnane and Michael placed his shot beautifully to the right of the keeper for a super goal. This put us into the lead for the first time. Dingle then added two points but another Michael Linnane point left the sides level after 40 minutes. Three quick points then by the home side in the next five minutes gave them back their three points half time lead.
However in the final quarter (15 minutes of normal time plus almost 5 minutes of additional time) we held the opposition to just one more point while we added three more – a beautiful effort from play by Donagh McMahon and two from frees by Michael O’Gara and Michael Slattery. But that stubborn Dingle defence thwarted us time after time from getting us over the line.
It still was a brilliant performance by our lads which looks even better when you consider that of the starting 15 – five were under 18, seven were under 19, one was under 20 and just 2 under 21. And of the six subs on the bench four were under 18. So Wayne, John and Darragh were thinking long term here which they emphasized very much in their after match discussion with the players.
Colin Griffin, who has missed the last five SF Co. League games through injury, lined out in goals, a most unusual position for him. But he did very well, making a number of vital saves and keeping a clean sheet into the bargain.
Team: Colin Griffin, Shane Kelliher, Dylan Casey, Brandon Patterson, Pádriag Looney, Ciarán O’Reilly, Shane Walsh, Michael O’Gara (0-1 free), Joseph O’Connor (0-1), Donagh McKivergan (0-1 free), Donagh McMahon (0-1), Michael Linnane (1-2), Seán Dukes, Gearóid Fitzgerald, Michael Slattery (1-1).
Subs used: Jack O’Shea (38m), David Fitzmaurice (44m), Joe Looby (56m).
The Qtr. Final draw for the Acorn Life County U21 Football Championship will take place today @ 1pm approx. and will be streamed live on Kerry GAA TV.

West Kerry beat KOR in a game in which they dominated for the majority but almost gave away when Rahillys rallied late on with 2 goals near the end. Promising performance from WK considering they had a fairly young side out, were missing at least 5 players and had never even met up for training before. Sean and Liam Bambury, Jimmy O Grady and Cathal Ferriter impressed for WK.

KOR were down about seven starters due to injury, holidays and USA - I suspect this is common to many of the squads in the competition.
West Kerry proved too strong for our U-21s in this first round tie played in Strand Road this evening.
Both teams started tentatively with scores at a premium, the sides tied after 14 minutes on 2 points each, our scores coming from Sean Griffin in the first minute and Shane McElligott soon afterwards from a free. West Kerry began to dominate however from here to the half time whistle where they had the upper hand at midfield with good support from their centre back and they hit 2-02 without reply in the following 10 minutes – we continued to scrap for possession and with captain Karl Mullins, now at midfield we had the next 3 points, Karl firing over after a good run and Kevin Johnson with two pointed frees – we retired at the break, 7 points in arrears – 2-06 to 0-05.
The second half saw West Kerry continue to dominate scoring 6 points without reply with 3 coming from their midfielder and 2 points from their full forward – we continued to battle and were rewarded on the 14th minute when full forward James O’Connor palmed to the net following good work from Karl Mullins and Rory O’Connor. A strong run from midfield from Karl saw him find the net to leave us seven points in arrears and when he again found his range to raise a white flag, we had the deficit down to six- 2-12 to 2-06. West Kerry again raised the siege with a score from their wing forward but in another attack Rory O’Connor outjumped the keeper to fist to the net to leave just five points between us with 6 minutes plus injury time to be played. This was as good as it got as the westerners continued to drive forward and though we matched them score for score to the end it was not enough and we finished five points down, 2-17 to 3-09 at the final whistle.
The loss of senior panellists Tom Hoare and Gearóid Savage was too much to bear and on the night the divisional side were deserving winners. Karl Mullins along with Sean Collins, Rory O’Connor, Darragh & Shane McElligott were our stand out performers and never gave up in a game we were always chasing.
Unfortunately West Kerry were unable to furnish a team sheet in advance of the game.
Team: Cillian Moran, Aidan Mangan, Kieran Mangan, Seán Collins, Rory O’Connor (1-0), Karl Mullins ( 1-02), Jordan Foley, Darragh McElligott, Donagh O’Brien ( 0-01), Shane McElligott ( 0-02), Padraig Griffin, Seán Griffin ( 0-01), Gearóid Dillane, James O’Connor ( 1-0), Kevin Johnson ( 0-03).

does anyone know if gneeveguilla are good enough to be on their own, ive seen a few games they have some good players such as dj murphy darren brosnan pa warren and connie connor, not sure if they have the fire power up front theyll need shane sullivan to be on form up front to pose any threat. you have to commend them however for having the guts to go on their own

I see on the Kerry GAA website these games are scheduled for January 1st - 2030 !!!! ( A Tuesday they tell us)
I always felt this competition was not high on the priority list of the County board but 2030. Don't think too many of the guys who played R1 will be eligible.

A surprisingly big win for St Brendans, Feale Rangers failing to field vs Gneeveguilla is very disappointing. St. Brendans would be very strong at this grade. Would have the lads from Na Gails who were with the U20's as well as Andrew Barry i think he's still U21 anyway?

Semi Finals of this competition on this evening with Dingle V Mid Kerry in Austin Stacks Park at 6.30 and Gneeveguilla V East Kerry in Fitzgerals Stadium, Killarney also at 6.30.
Would have to fancy the two divisional sides to come through.

Dingle beat Mid Kerry fairly easily in the minor final 3 years ago but they are now minus Mark O Connor obviously. Still I think Dingle might come through. Fair play to Gneeveguilla for taking the decision to go alone, like Firies in the minor championship last year. But East Kerry (with David Clifford on board?) should be a good bit too strong for them.

A bridge too far for Gneeveguilla who were left without a couple of important players for this game, Darren Brosnan one of those. It was always going to be difficult considering the extreme dept East Kerry have in their ranks. To be dealt with blows like Evan Cronin Dara Moynihan and Brian Friel up front and to be replaced with a player in the calibre of David Clifford is all that needs to be said. However it must be said that it wasn't Clifford that was the defining factor in this result it was down to a very attackimg powerful running display by the East Kerry side with Kerry underage stars clustered around the field.
One would have to feel for the 2 man full back line of Gneeveguilla in Connie O Connor and Dj Murphy who got the job of Lee O Donoghue and David Clifford who at times had almost 40-50 yards of space at their disposal. There's not an intercounty side in the country that would enjoy that task not to mind an u21 Club side but credit must be given to Murphy who battled hard on the probable Young player of the year. For East Kerry it would be hard to single out a certain few but Mark Ryan David Clifford Peter Mccarhy Cian Gammell amd Finbarr Murphy showed well on the night with Patrick Warren and Jj Herlihy and Jamie Brosnan also trying hard for the Gneeveguilla side.
It is highly unlikely East Kerry will be stopped from here and questions will be asked regarding the strength of East Kerry going forward and the number of clubs made available to them and whether it will be allowed to continue. Fair play to Gneeveguilla for taking the plunge on going alone it can't be easy for them to have to be part of a defeat like last night but they were more than happy to give experience and the oppurtunity for younger players to play more competitive championship football, which now the long run will certainly pay dividends.

That was an East Kerry side without Daniel O'Brien, Dara Moynihan, or Evan Cronin.

That was an East Kerry side without Daniel O'Brien, Dara Moynihan, or Evan Cronin. Yes Gaaaddiction stated that in the last post? That was still a formidable outfit by East Kerry. With no player missing there forward like would be Dara Moynihan Brian Friel Ronan Buckley David Clifford Lee Donoghue Evan Cronin.. what club/district u21 (if even senior) side would stop that? From U14-16 East Kerry is split with Eoghan Ruadh competing (Glenflesk Gneeveguilla Kilcummin Rathmore) this perhaphs would make more logical since and it would give more players from them clubs to play at a higher level. From that East kerry panel there is 18 All Ireland minor medals and 4 All Ireland Junior Medals... not to mention Hogan cups and Munster.. fair play to Gneeveguilla for having a go I know plenty of teams who would have just said they couldn't field a team. Thought Mark Ryan was my standout player last night he was outstanding along with Finbarr Murphy and Peter McCarthy. Thought it was wrong to give it to Clifford when he only played 35 mins, Clifford was still impressive but I thought Dj Murphy actually did quite well on him considering the circumstances, they had a good tussle. Lee O Donoghue was also good. The Legion man in goal Conor McCarthy was very impressive his lockouts were outstanding all night and made a few big saves aswell. If Dingle keep it within 10 points then fair play to them because this is an expectional East Kerry team

There has been a lot written over the past few years about the pick that East Kerry enjoy - the point above regarding the underage split is well made and would go a long way to rectifying the situation. This competition is very important in my opinion in keeping young players in the game but the way/time it is run makes it very unattractive resulting in teams failing to field etc. This is turn is used as a justification for downgrading or even scrapping the grade.
Keeping young club players active in the sport is critical and is the only way the senior club teams will survive particlularly in rural areas - this competition (and the club variant which has not been run for the past three years)need to be improved and taken more seriously - senior players don't just appear, they are brought through the ranks.
