Put yourself in a Kildare players shoes. Would you recklessly dive on a breaking ball like Brian Begley did last sunday to prevent the winning point ...after the DC goal. They will want to do their best and win etc but... a bit of recklessness is needed borne out of a desire to get the prize on offer...and there is no prize for kildare. Kildare are often at their most dangerous when there is nothing on the table. No pressure game!

You could say the same about Galway against Monaghan unfortunately.

I'll eat my hat if they do something radical like picking Griffin at 6 or 8. Kelly cert to start, couldn't see the goal keeping musical chairs raising its head again this summer. I d rather Murphy was kept in the nets v Monaghan , think he is that bit better but another change of keeper at this stage, just too much musical chairs. it is pick and stick at this stage.

Mark O'Connor is a seismic loss at the moment. He would be at the same pitch as Clifford & O'Shea.

Completely disillusioned following my recent trips to Clones and Croke Park. I have complete faith in the players but we need a game plan. If we do manage to scrape through and meet the Dubs in the semi I for one will abstain my season ticket as I cannot stomach our negative "tictacs" over the last 5 years Don't let it go to waste and regrets you will have a few, hopefully!

Kerry have no control over what may happen in Salthill. They have no control over Dublin Roscommon . They do have control over the game in Killarney and they should come out swinging like they did against Clare and Cork. You'd never know but the next outing after that could have historic significance. There's a lot wrong right now but there's a lot right too. Keep the faith everyone!

Agreed Dano - I had a wee nibble on Kerry at 9:1 yesterday for Sam.

Its hardly all doom and gloom, clifford will be a superstar o se will be a very solid player for us White is amazing he has what 4 starts for seniors? Tom Sullivan was excellent and Shanahan/begley will improve.
It was always going to take time with so many youngsters 2 years will make a huge difference to this team we need to be patient (i know thats not really in our nature!) There are definetly green (and gold) shoots there! Hopefully we can beat kildare and give the dubs a run for it afterwards more experience these boys get the better!

What should our long term plan for midfield be? Leave aside the kicout etc even but, the game seems to pass our lads by. Two mobile lads? A runner and fetcher? In an ideal world would would have a runner and fetcher hybrid in both players a lá Brian Fenton. I know people go on about Mark O'Connor in the AFL but, its one player. If Dublin lost Fenton in the morning they prob still have Howard, McCauley, McCarthy even Kilkenny that could slot in there and perform to a high level.
The old midfield player that could play in the centre of the park and no where else is probably coming to to close i suppose. The introduction of the mark has extended the lifespan of the high fetching midfielder. Aside from Mark Griffin is there anyone else that we could give a shot at?
Brendan O'Sullivan looked like a prospect a few years ago but seems to gone off the scene really.

Other than griffin maybe Okunbar over the next few years its hard to see anyone else really unless someone else steps up in the league. I have said it before we need more height in the half lines a la sean sullivan or Aodhan macgearilt its an 8 man midfield now really relying on one player to do all the fielding is a non runner now

We have continued to develop the same type of midfielder - high fielder, irrespective of mobility - the future will look to Okunbar, Diarmuid O’Connor - Mike Breen won an All Ireland minor @ midfield - should we be developing the likes of Daniel O’Brien & Mitch Foley to do a running role - could Jason Foley be more effective in time @ midfield?

It feels premature to complain about setting the game for 5pm and the long journey home afterwards but I hope to be writing that post.

Putting the Galway/Mghan game to one side, is there a possibility that Kerry may very well struggle to beat Kildare firstly and/or secondly by a margin of 4 were the other game to be a 1pt win for Galway?
The opposition should suit given that they do not operate a sophisticated system that Kerry struggle to play against - exhibits A and B in the form of Galway and Monaghan respectively.
While the Paul Murphy experiment in the forwards did not work last year, I think it is worth looking at again as a few things have changed: - we have much more firepower now with Clifford and OShea and can afford to have a different type of player in our forwards - we need someone in the half fwd line to win breaks without worrying about marking a man - opposition keepers are targeting Murphy aerially and in a more advanced oosition this is less likely and/or would mean his man still has to make his way from his own 40 rather than our 40 - we need to have steel in the half back line and preferably someone who holds as Gavin White is likely to be a runner - Murphy is being asked to defend, hold, attack, score, win breaks, etc at the moment and its too much...in trying to do all, its impossible to be as effective as he could be
Would play him at wing fwd in a free role...

If Kerry can't beat Kildare by four points at home they don't belong in the AISF.

Colm O'Rourke certainly doesn't believe they belong there....

We've no business thinking we can compete with Dublin if we can't put a score up against a Kildare team with nothing to play for but pride. From a Kildare perspective, it's a pity that their U20 final wasn't played before the Kerry match as it would be an opportunity for O'Neill to give a few of their promising young guys a taste of the championship at no cost.

Infairness at home in Killarney against a non defensive team who are out already. We should be beating Kildare comprehensively in my opinion. I think you will see a big reaction and Kerry by 9/10 points. Funnily enough if we manage to get out of the group I think we won't let ourselves down against Dublin.

I agree about other players in the middle 8 having responsibility to field aswell. It was great to watch Gavin White win so many kick outs the last day. Before the match I wouldn't have had him down as a dominating fielder. If we are looking for a midfielder for next year I think we should give a look at Roibeard O'Se of an Ghaeltacht. I would consider him a very good fielder but also mobile. I think Diarmuid O'Connor has brilliant potential but badly needs to bulk up as was exposed in the u20s. EDIT: Would Kieran Murphy of the juniors be worth a look?

I think Jason Foley will be Kerry Full Back for as long as he stays fit (a decade hopefully). He is a natural defender with an excellent footballing brain which is crucial for any man tasked with minding the house.
Okunbar, on the other hand, has serious strength, pace and stamina and is a model for a modern day "box-to-box" (to coin soccer parlance) running midfield role. He does not have the subtle defensive skills to play at 3.

We need to make our team all round more imposing so Foley at corner back is no bad thing. Okunbor does not have the ball skills to play midfield which is why he has been moved to full back.

Okunbor doesn't have the "subtlety" for full back nor the "ball skills" for midfield.
Perhaps he might develop one or both of these attributes.
