I'm confused - I am told the GAA is based on grassroot support. But I don't believe this is the association I see today. April has been declared a club month by Croke Park - a hiatus between the league and championship when clubs can play at full strength. It was offered as a crumb to silence those ranting about the pressure of the intercounty season and its impact on the club scene. Yet this weekend nearly 50 of the reputedly best players in the county will not line out with their clubs because the county has a match in six weeks time. So one would anticipate that the democratic and player organised code we now have would kick into action and common sense would prevail - every club has delegates going to county board meetings but they seem to be unable to get club players released to clubs. The county board are elected by those same clubs that they appear to ignore or maybe the delegates are doing nothing. We have a county players association (GPA) but they don't seem interested in the topic when all they have to do is as an association say no more. More recently we have a club players association but again they don't seem to give a damm or else they are unable to organise themselves to demand common sense. Has the intoxication of winning the Sam Maguire driven all sense from the association, the players and the clubs that we allow our club game to be treated thus. We ask about black spots and the summer exodus of young players - this is simply a reflection of the way the club game is being treated.

I’m guessing the reason is that the management don’t want them playing games 6 weeks in succession... Weekends like this are presumably used to work on the kick-outs and tactics which obviously need work

Tail wagging the dog! I've said it before, clubs should release players to county, not the other way around.

Do you have a list of the 50 players who aren't playing?
All players involved in Championship matches are togging this weekend, like they have all of April.
Jack Barry is starting midfield for Na Gaeil- scored the first point against Finuge. Jason Foley is down to start for Ballydonoghue.
Is it lads who are involved in league games who are sitting out?
EDIT: Just read in the Division 1 thread that it's the 25+ from Division 1 games, plus injured players. Not ideal.
