beaufort not as strong as people make out, were seriously rattled by senans in group game, strong around the midfield diamond. I would have agreed with you up until they beat a very strong Firies team who made the semi final last year

Who's on the line for Beaufort this year? Eanna O Malley. Think Beaufort will win this championship. They have a very strong spine to match Na Gaeil who I think will get through the other side unless Clifford performs to even greater heights. Great achievement by Churchill thus far. Cheers happycappy.

Brought in an outside manager this year for that very reason. Hasn't been afraid to drop established names if necessary and it's a youngish side overall. Results haven't been going their way so far but the team is improving slowly. Agree though, Listowel have seriously underachieved over the years. And the support is dire. Which is a terrible pity. Rathmore with a far smaller pick have consistently produced county players. Same with Dingle. Ardfert a dual club with a far smaller pick have completely out performed Listowel. Something not right there. Not good for Kerry football. East Kerry streets ahead of North Kerry at the moment. Not sure if it is down to anything the Boards are doing, more to coaching and GDO Vince Cooper is doing. The excitement of NKC obscures the poor standard of North Kerry teams

Not sure if it is down to anything the Boards are doing, more to coaching and GDO Vince Cooper is doing. The excitement of NKC obscures the poor standard of North Kerry teams Not just East Kerry area. NK lagging well behind the rest of the county. There's hardly an area outside of possibly Iveragh that isn't ahead of NK. Iveragh is ravaged by depopulation. Despite this SK div team still pulls it out every year. Meanwhile FR and SR are nowhere. Dual clubs/players have a lot to contend with. Fixtures rarely take account of the three or four clubs affected. The club champs at present are on Saturdays/Sundays with senior cty league hurling games on same weekends. That's some situation isn't it. Totally unfair and it certainly won't happen the other way around in the Summer. The secondary schools are also widely dispersed and it has to be said doing little or nothing in any case. Tarbert, Ballybunion, Causeway, Abbeyfeale, Castleisland, two schools in Listowel and a fair few lads head to Tralee schools too. All scattered with little focus on football. I attended a senior college game between two NK schools. Both teams had barely the 15 to line out. One school team was only put together as a player went around gathering bodies at lunchtime I was told. No Kerry minors bothered lining up either. What the hell is going on ? There seemed to be zero work put into preparation or game plan. The standard was shocking. You'd have to wonder what happened to all those Ballydonoghue players who were excellent u16s and minors. The vast majority went to one NK school together and achieved....nothing. The players apparently wanted outside coaches brought in but it was rejected. The same school has taken P.E. off the 6th year curriculum this school year. Are the people in charge of club teams and development squads up to it ? For many clubs there seems to be very little ambition or concern at their county position. The same faces are on the sidelines year after year. The Ballylongford / Asdee situation is puzzling. They combine at underage and from what I hear were close to reuniting at senior level but a few diehards shut it down. Neither are doing anything on their own. A reunion would make sense. Brosna/Knock and Duagh combining in teams must also be questioned. Three clubs together needed to form a team ? The county board need to go into the NK Board area and ask some serious questions. A fifth of the counties clubs are in the area with most underperforming. Perhaps the NK Board also needs more new blood. New Chair Johnny Stack seems to have made a very solid start but there's a lot of deadwood to go yet. But sure never mind, lads will still delude themselves every Autumn and Christmas with the NK Championship. A devalued overhyped competition played in muck and gutter. I'll get hammered here by the usual clients but I don't care. The standard is cat. There are no great teams or great players taking part anymore. It fills the stands, brings in the €€€€€'s but wrecks pitches and keeps players going in the worst time of the year when they should be setting sights on the upcoming county league and club championship. NK football is in crisis.

In fairness, North Kerry flies the flag for hurling in the County on its own and might be entitled to point to the state of the small ball game elsewhere.

They don’t love it because of the standard though- they live it because it can be, at times, a quasi blood sport With respect, Kerrybhoy, it's unfair to characterise NK fans simply as melee-seeking cavemen, or NK footballers as the stereotypical hatchet men often portrayed. I don't recall anything much untoward in any recent NK games I've seen. Granted, the standard wouldn't always blow you away, to say the least, but it's honest stuff. People like it because it generates the crowds and the atmosphere, a self-fulfilling prophesy of sorts. Plus there's shag all else on at that time of year.

All local championships have the same attractions. No melee in NK champ for a long time. Just poor games. Lazy characterisation to say we all love the skull cracking. I'd love to see how a lot of other NK people feel. I think we have a massive problem. Does the state of NK football merit a thread of its own I wonder.

Interesting post an bradan feasa.
One wonders though how much stronger NK football would be if the likes of Eoin Liston, Ogie, and EF were based where they grew up and able to tend the game at grassroots level.
EF has been important to PCD just like Jack is with CNS.
Stephen Stack was central to Stacks recent county title.
Finuge were winning the intermediate not so long ago so the NK championship was strong enough up to recently.
St Michaels Listowel has to be key to the revival of NK football.
Its not just NK though that i would have concerns about.....KOR had no player on the 2018 Tralee CBS team. That takes some doing surely.

I’m not characterising all as that but there’s definitely ah element of that in the NK championship and has been for years! I do agree that the standard has fallen off a cliff there in the last few years- mid to late 00s it was still quite strong- as for a solution- I’m not fully sure but it would have to start with the schools

Na Gaeil cruising vs Finuge into the second half, so they will face Fossa in the Semi- Final.
1-14 to 1-2 and apparently Finuge have had 3 men red carded.
Not at the game, but following on twitter.

Na Gaeil 2-17 Finuge 1-4
Finuge finish with 12 men, Na Gaeil with 14.
Game seems like it was as good as over at HT with Finuge down 2 men.
Apart from an early goal, Na Gaeil seem to have been in full control.
Finuge missed a penalty with 10 mins to go.

The other separate thread is regarding underperforming areas across the whole county. North Kerry is one of those areas which includes ALL clubs and secondary schools activity. Plenty areas and clubs have been mentioned here. I'm very happy to be involved with my own club and have zero interest in getting involved with any other clubs. Never have, never will. Your comment about the "manager's job" is childish but actually ludicrously funny. Looks like I touched a nerve I'd say.

Loads of hype around Ballydonoghue. I understand Michael Foley wasn't playing today but that aside is it really that big a shock. What have Ballydonoghue seniors done at county level lately ? Comment 1

Still asking the question. What have Ballydonoghue done at senior level in county competitions to warrant the massive hype. Nothing against the players or club. Just feel the hype machine is out of control. Heard from people at the game that Churchill played with huge hunger, pace and power and won despite having a guy sent off after 40 mins. Comment 2

Off the back of successive NK championships you would think they should be able to rattle this competition. Tough championship to win NK Champ now a devalued competition unfortunately. Fellas can delude themselves all they want but standard of competition is low. In the past there were powerful Desmonds (A.I. Club champs), Ballylongford,Tarbert, Moyvane, Beale, Finuge and Listowel teams. Many were capable of playing at high level in Cty comps. Not now. Ballydonoghue have some fine young players but have a long way to go yet. Comment 3

Why don’t you just set up a thread on Ballydonoghue and tell us what you really think?? You're a busy boy. From what I've seen of them I think Ballydonoghue are a good young team with some really fine players. Obviously the county players stick out with the former Kerry minors, 21s and Juniors among them. They did small rural clubs proud by their success at Feile, and at county level taking on the big town teams and beating them. They have won two NK Champs but that is not what it used to be to be fair (they'll win 3 in a row this year I have no doubt). They have disappointed at senior level with the high expectation in some quarters that they would cruise through the Junior Champ and County League. This is a mystery to many but their inexperience at this level may be the problem. Or it may be the weight of expectation on their shoulders. It's not always easy to transfer underage success to senior level but it should happen in time. Either way it's a massive surprise to see them in the relegation play off which I actually expect them to win handily. They should be too strong for Annascaul. There is too much hype around them which certainly doesn't help the players. Like I said many are surprised that they haven't kicked on including myself and we're wondering what was the story. Are you happy now ? You can start the Ballydonoghue thread yourself if you want. I wouldn't be that interested.

Best of luck to Ballydonoghue. If they go on to win titles fair play to them. Will be happy to see it. It's a football thing for me. You seem too close to make valid judgements. Potential and achievement are separate things. I am looking at it objectively from a football point of view. In the GAA we are all guilty of tribalism and cannot concieve that our tribe may not be what we think it is. Ballydonoghue have yet to achieve at county level at senior level. They are not alone in that but it's the truth. Many other teams with much bigger picks are also failing to progress. That is also the truth. I expect Ballydonoghue to produce in time but for now the talking up of the team doesn't do players (including yourself I am guessing) any favours. It just sets you up as targets for the opposition. It's the hype I am targeting not your team.
