If Con O'Callaghan was a Kerry man would he have got a run out in 2017? I am reading Colm's book at the moment (its way better than the reviews suggested) and its amazing, looking back, that Paidi showed such faith in a 10 stone frail young player in 2002. It could have all ended in tears of course if Francie Bellow had found him in his cross hairs! Con is the best minor I've seen in the last 20 years playing for Dublin. I hoped he would play in this year's championship , while some worried about his age and build. After our first game against Carlow in Leinster Champioship , when he was kept quite enough , a few people remarked that he was still very young and a bit light , that it was ok standing out at minor and u21 but playing for the Dublin Seniors was a different ball game. If he struggled against Carlow what would Kerry ,Mayo or Tyrone do to him. Thankfully Jim stuck with him and I'm hoping this year Brian Howard will also see a lot of game time for Dublin. David Clifford has too Much Talent not to play a part this year. I guess time will tell how Eamon views him and whether he plays him in Championship.

Fellas that can play Senior in their teens have one thing in common, hardness. A younger lad will also be tested automatically and any crack will be opened. Paidi had that overt toughness and while Seamus Moynihan also made it he never showed aggressive hardness though he was never ever thrown about. Clifford is a complete footballer and this is one test he will have to take at some stage. I think he will pass early on as he moves too quick and so avoids targeted hits. He isn't small either and you'd feel he has steel - is it fair to say he was the least well marked minor for a long time? and that is no disrespect to his opponents. Could David be such a game changer that he would contribute significantly to closing the gap between us and the Dubs? Overall how do ConC and DaveC compare?

Oh Mick- I dont understand why you go around trying to pick childish battles with people on a regular basis but I couldnt be bothered getting into some petty argument with you. Now on my comment - everyone is going about Clifford as if he is the second coming , etc- he is an 18 year old kid who has never played senior championship before. He needs to be nurtured and I'd rather not see him in a match day squad this year at all. There has been no attempt to manage the big profile that is building around him and I do genuinely fear for him when he makes the step up as the pressure being put on such a young fella is astronomical. Added to all this is that- I have seen the younge fella play at senior championship level this year and he didnt impress just yet. Danny O Sullivan marked him out of it against KOR and he is going to have to be transitioned into dealing with senior footballers- not everyone who marks him is going to be giving up about 2 stone weight and 4 inchs in height to him. Jack mc Caffrey, Ciaran Kilkenny, Paul Mannion were all 19 starting the 2013 championship . Jack was still 19 in the final. David Clifford is a year younger than these guys were but an incredible talent , I'd give him some game time in the league. If Kerry find themselves in an AllIreland semi-final this year and for what ever reason they need to change things and bring someone on who can get them points , David Clifford with experience from receiving a few hits in the league might be the man. It's quite possible it's a year too early for him, but that talent should at least be tried in the league , even if it's sparingly. He could learn a lot from a few older Kerry guys possibly like Donaghy who might not be around the following year. I don’t think any of those guys had the size advantage at minor that Clifford had- Kilkenny was big but not as far ahead of others as David. Also those guys were brought in as relatively big part players- we are looking to bring in Clifford and expect him to reverse our fortunes an I feel that’s a whole different level of psychological pressure to be putting on a lad- I’d like to see his talent nurtured and not just flogged. One last point would be that 2 of the named Dublin players were coming from senior clubs and colleges playing sigerson in the business end- so they were used to extra level of physicality and intensity from the off.

You are talking about senior football here as opposed to minor and I have seen him beat out the gate this year by a good club level corner back who was tenacious and physical- he’ll get that in every intercounty game and will thus need some work and some nurturing befire he can be relied upon to start

Clifford is probably the best minor most of us have ever seen. Of course he should be given his chance this year to see whether he can step up. It may take time or he might be a sensation straight away. Regardless he should be given a shot.

I think the biggest issue with Eamon is his conservatism when it comes to making the crunch calls. That's what was most disappointing during last year's campaign. When push came to shove, youth was dispensed with in favour of the older more "reliable" fellas. It backfired and hopefully the management will have learned a lot from the season. As against that, David Clifford will need to be managed properly. I have never seen his likes at minor level. I saw him a few years ago in the roasting heat of Killarney against Cork and I was astounded at his speed of thought on and off the ball. This has improved again in the few years since. The expectation will be massive, however, even at his tender age, he is very used to it. It will be very interesting to see how things go.

It is pure rubbish to say that posters are looking to and expecting Clifford to reverse our fortunes. Who has said that in any post?
Most posters have alluded to the myriad of problems Kerry have (problems which happen to be in every line of the team in 2017).

Every now and again a special talent comes along that can go into senior straight from minor Maurice Fitzgerald and Seamus Moynihan did so and took to it like a duck to water and they were playing on bad Kerry teams when there was even more physicality that there is now- jez the cork backs then would ate you without salt! In hurling, Eoin Kelly was used at senior level as a sub when still minor and was a starter at 19. Clifford could be in the bracket and class of the above. The concerning thing about it is that we need something special like him having an immediate impact to spark a change in fortunes come the business end time to throw in 3 or 4 like Clifford, Gavin White, Sean O'Shea, Shane Murphy and hope it sparks something Gooch Declan Darran Are just 3 more recent examples of lads who were thrown in as young lads. They had no where near the pedigree as Clifford has. Padraig Reidy, Declan Quillothers who were on teams at 19, David Moran and Tommy Walsh not far behind. I just wonder would any of them have got a chance at that age under Fitzmaurice.

Has Howard that pedigree? Costello could finally nail down a starting place ..up to now he has been used just to disrupt and help close out and defend tight leads at the end of game. Thats a very charitable way of putting it! Will MDMA rise again... he was the other player I felt that Dublin couldn't do without but they did in 2017.

I always thought Shane Carthy (Naomh Mearnog)would make the breakthrough , but hasn't quite happened yet , some reasons out of his control. These two are Currently in the O Byrne Cup Dublin Squad and could easily Feature in the League. These would be my two who I would like to see progress. John Smalls brother Paddy and Eoghan O Garas brother Killian are also two great Prospects who have had injury issues recently . If they stay fit could emerge from the pack also.

But Con looked average against Carlow. Yet flew through a supposedly unbreakable Tyrone defence. Because of his raw natural ability and belief in what he wanted to do once he got the ball. Also i would never use a club game to define how a player will fair in an important inter county game. I've watched many current Dublin players look average in club games , but are different in the big games when needed .

Playing Con at CHF was a masterstroke. Harder to intimidate a young lad out there I feel and when he turns his man he just goes for the jugular, a bit like Cooper in his prime.

Excitement is building and the joy of anticipation that comes with January is always heart warming. Fitz is casting a very wide net judging by the lads being brought in to various training sessions. League will be used to look at those who show Best in training I would expect and if the minors of the last four years show themselves to be up to it I hope he lets them loose - one proviso however is that in our eagerness for fresh talent we must look beyond this year and introduce the younger talent with a view to nurturing them for long term success.

Phrases like "used sparingly" and "getting game time" were used. Speaking of minors stepping up - in 1972 Frank McGuigan captained Tyrone to an Ulster minor title and came on as a sub in the senior final an hour later. Before anyone says "it was different back then" check the PaidI and Dinny Allen video on YouTube.

A thread for the first round of the League turns into a DC Yes or No ??
I am being inundated with PM about the lad as well.
The only thing I will say is this...
If we can find a spot for him lets do it.
Cén Fáth??
Because the belt he has from placed balls is Phenomenal.
For me that would be enough to give him a place when the Aimsir fines up a bit.
Brian Sheehan was good BUT I think this fella could be nearly as good as Maurice from the ground.

Putting a stop to the Dubs 5 in a row 2019 must be the long term goal.
Anything before that will be a welcome bonus.

Donegal are the county most likely to get relegated this year. They have quite a few of their regulars retiring and 3 of their best players out injured for the first rounds of the league. Even with their best squad they found it tough going last year in the league and the championship and that bodes well for Kerry.
Looking at last year's teams it would be great to see some youth in there. O’ Beaglaoich, Foley, Savage, Clifford, Barry, Conor Geaney, Tom O'Sullivan, Cathal Ó Lúing. Denis Daly, Gavin Crowley, Kevin McCarthy, Adrian Spillane, Gavin O'Grady, Ronan Shanahan, Padraig O'Connor , Sean O'Shea, Conor Cox and Barry O'Sullivan should all see time during the league if they are all available and fit.
Given the problems Donegal find themselves in I would like a team like this: Shane Murphy Brian O'Beaglaoich Jason Foley Ronan Shanahan Tadhg Morley Peter Crowley Tom O'Sullivan David Moran Jack Barry Kevin McCarthy Paul Murphy Darran O'Sullivan Jack Savage Paul Geaney David Clifford
Bearing in mind that Paul Murphy is not the most natural Centre half forward, but we need some speed in there. Come championship time we will probably see Johnny Buckley and Donnchadh Walsh there as well, but we need to try something new. I went for a half forward line with some great speed and three excellent kickers of the ball. A full forward line that is lethal and a half back line that is tough, but fast. We might try Marc Griffin again in Centre back if we can afford it. He is great going forward and a tough defender. Not a natural fullback like Foley though and with another year behind him this should be the year for Foley. O'Beaglaoich too is a great player that should be a starter by now. The only big worry is that fullback line though, but we should have enough experience there and around them. I would prefer Shane Ryan in goals, but believe he is not available so Shane Murphy should be looked at in my opinion. We have other players that have been around the panel for a couple of years, but have seen few games or only as replacements like Brendan O'Sullivan, Jonathan Lyne, Michael Geaney and BJ Keane and I think it is only fair to them if we give them a chance or be honest and say we're planning without them. Looking at the panels of the last few years we have seen a lot of players that are mostly on the bench and might come on as replacements or they are in and out of the matchday panels. Given the demands on intercounty players I don't think it's fair to ask people to put their lives on hold and then not given a chance. Given how we seem to be giving leads away in the second half of games we need to use substitutes more wisely and have a 40 men panel where every player can be replaced without weakening the team. Youth is key in my opinion as we need to build a squad for the future.
Last year's teams in the same fixture: Donegal: M A McGinley; P McGrath, C Ward, E Ban Gallagher; P Brennan (0-01), R McHugh (0-01); F McGlynn; J McGee, H McFadden; C Thompson (0-03), M Langan, M O’Reilly (0-01); P McBrearty (0-04,2f), M Murphy (1-03, 1-00 pen, 3f), J Brennan. Subs: Eoin McHugh (0-01) for McGlynn (25); C Gibbons (0-01) for Langan (42); D O’Connor (0-02) for J Brennan (48); E Doherty for McGrath (49); E O’Donnell for O’Reilly (58); S McBrearty for McFadden (60)
Kerry: B Kelly; J Foley, M Griffin, S Enright; P Crowley, K Young, T O’Sullivan (0-01); D Moran (0-01), T Morley; J Lyne (0-01), P Murphy (0-01), D Walsh (0-02); J Savage (0-03,1f), P Geaney (2-04, 0-2f), J O’Donoghue (0-03). Subs: Jack Barry (0-1) for Enright (8); M Geaney for Lyne (49); B J Keane for O’Donoghue (52); Brendan O’Sullivan for Murphy (58); C Geaney for Savage (60); Barry O’Sullivan for Walsh (66)

With An Ghaeltacht's extended season I would have expected O'Beaglaoich not to be available, but hopefully he will be back to intercounty action. Is Darran definitely still injured? Does that mean we can have a team similar to this for the match v Donegal: Shane Murphy Jason Foley Marc Griffin Ronan Shanahan Tadhg Morley Peter Crowley Tom O'Sullivan Anthony Maher/Brendan O'Sullivan Jack Barry Kevin McCarthy Paul Murphy Darran O'Sullivan Jack Savage Paul Geaney David Clifford

Would expect to see Sean O Se getting game time in the league - he has served his apprenticeship of sorts last year and made Championship match day panels - next step must be some league appearances. Thereafter a lot will depend on who is available and showing well in training - Cornerback lists seven players who would appear to be unavailable for the early rounds at least.

One of the few good things about this time of the year is that football is only around the corner again.
Its likely to be a league campaign where the aim will be to get 7 or 8 points - the tricky away games at Mayo, Monaghan, Dublin and Tyrone are hardly going to see more than 4 points gained so really Kerry need to be winning the 3 home games to avoid having to get a result in Omagh in the last round.
Even with the injuries and players taking extended breaks, we should be in a good position to know by the end of the league if the problem areas can be adequately addressed.
Goalkeeper - I hope Murphy is the second coming that people seem to think he is. If the news on Shane Ryan is correct, then Kerry are in trouble if Murphy isnt the solution we hope he is.
Full back line - new personnel and new tactics required to ensure the full back line are not as exposed as they were last August.
Midfield - Maher is a year older (and probably slower), Barry is raw and Moran despite his huge talent and will be targeted, especially if whoever is next to him is not picking up the slack. Barry Sullivan has not progressed as I thought he would and I dont think Brendan Sullivan is up to the required standard. A worry.
Half Forward Line - it might be too early for Seanie O Shea and Dara Moynihan but these are exactly the type of players we need in this area of the field. Fast, strong, workers, aggressive but also able to score consistently. We have struggled in this area in recent years and an improved half forward line is vital.
Free Taker - too much messing going on with free taking. Must be nailed down.

Based off the last 3 or 4 years, i dont think its incorrect to say that if some of our young lads were Dubs, they would be established Senior players by now.
They seem to be able to blend them in at 20-22 but kerry have not been successful in doing so.

Killian Young was training on his own, doing laps etc, Niall O’Mahony doing the early part of the session. Shane Enright, Jason Foley & Cormac Coffey were in the full back line in a conditioned game with Brian Kelly in goal; Ronan Shanahan was introduced later in the session as was Matthew Flaherty, Shane Murphy & Jack Barry; Killian Spillane was also involved. A lot of regulars seemed to be missing but talking to another bystander he told me that Anthony Maher is not returning!

A lot of regulars seemed to be missing but talking to another bystander he told me that Anthony Maher is not returning! That is both comforting and alarming. It's good to see plenty of youth being tried in training and the absence of certain starters means our hands are forced. As was pointed out Shane Murphy has to be tried as Kelly won't last forever and we need a goalkeeper for the future. Foley is a natural fullback, which we haven't had for years. We've had many different players at full back, but none were natural full backs like Foley. Foley is young, but as others have pointed out he and others would have had more chances already in other counties. We need to be sure that he can do the job, but if not, need to start the search for someone else. Shanahan, Matthew Flaherty, Cormac Coffey and Killian Spillane also are badly needed. In a way this year might be like 1975, young players coming through and they might either reignite the Kerry flame or extinguish it further, but we need to give youth a chance to show what they can do. With qualifiers and super 8 we have plenty of chances to slip up and still make a final.

Buck02 I agree with the everything you say except the point about Seanie O'Shea. If he was to be the game changer last year he should definitely be starting this year. If there isn't a free taker that will get about a 70% strike rate then drills for short frees should be worked on.

who's likely to come through from the last four minor teams to play at 8 & 9 at senior championship level for Kerry? O'Connor aside.
