John O'Leary spent most of his career playing outfield for his club, Cluxton played plenty out the field for Parnells, I am sure there are others as well
The Kilkenny hurling Keeper hurls loads out the field
We don't know the facts for sure so one has to be cautious but one thing is for sure is surely an inter county management team cannot tell a club where to play a player?
My choice of keepers in order would be 1. Shane Murphy 2. Shane Ryan 3. Brendan Kelly

It feels harsh to me but I suspect there is a bit more to this than meets the eye.

I would like to see Shane Murphy in from the start, his kick out is excellent and vital but will need some time to perfect with new teammates.

Do we have any idea of who has been brought into the panel this year/who has been dropped off it?

I think our forward line needs some serious remedial work. We had 1 scoring forward of note last year. That doesn't win an All Ireland.
Our half forward line needs footballers who can think on their feet, move the ball on quickly and kick pass accurately. We seem to have an over reliance on workers rather than ball players in this area. Imagine if Darran O Sullivan was on the 40 for the semi final last year? Would the mayo half backs have been thundering down the pitch constantly? I very much doubt it. We need to go back to being a serious threat as a forward unit. David Clifford will carry some burden and will be targeted for some serious punishment by opposition. He needs to be used sparingly and carefully. I would love to see Jameso come back to the form of 14, however, he has been a pale shadow of that player in the following 3 seasons, we live in hope, however. All the hype and talk about Seán O Shea last summer and we never got a glimpse. I look forward to seeing what he has to offer.
Full back was a disaster last year any time it mattered most, Griffin has plenty to offer Kerry but not as a full back. Jason Foley will surely be given his opportunity. I can't wait to see Gavin White at senior level, this guy is a serious footballer and hopefully he will get his opportunity. Briain Ó Beaglaoich will surely make a return too?
Jack Barry should have learned loads from being bullied by Parsons and O Shea in the replay last year. This man has savage potential.
Thinking of all the possibilities certainly does whet the appetite for the coming league. I just hope that come championship, we don't end up going back to the old reliables and dispense with the youth.
We need to put the foot back into our football. For 20 minutes against Cork last year, I thought that the football we played was breath taking, All Ireland winning stuff, I was excited at what was to come. However, we never matched that level thereafter and ended our season playing dreadfully fearful, defensive stuff.
We have a lot of work to do, we have plenty of potential, we have plenty of players that need to be given a chance. We need to be less conservative, less fearful and just go for it during the league. Can't wait for it all to get rolling again,

We are a year on now with AI minor winning laddos coming through so it should be interesting as they are physically and mentally stronger while the smell of blood is stronger as they know it is nearing the time that the gap will close with a cull at the other end. Auld lads are still putting it up to them and Fitzy will let 'em sort it out among themselves in training where law of the jungle applies - is it just me or is sport pure cruel?
Same everywhere but we have greater rising pressure than most and it will be all eyes on one David Clifford - JackO says Seamus Moynihan was the most notable recent teenager to fill the big extravaGeansai. If David remains hard to mark then his other skills will prevail and the way he alternates his balance is grounds for optimism pun not intended!
Happy 38th to all!
PS If you don't know what 'pun' is it doesn't matter and if you don't know what 'PS' is then it matters less!

Ryan will play 3-4 games at most for Rathmore per year if he becomes the Kerry senior Keeper so the argument of him needing to play club in goals doesn't stand up anymore, or is this a shift in policy where the non club playing Galvin was indulged in 2015 culminating in the 15 minute celebrity cameo appearance in the final. In the meantime a very fine keeper was lost last summer after the Munster championship. This situation with Ryan would want to be sorted out asap if his absence is correctly reported here.

The business about Shane Ryan is disheartening.

The team to be announced will tell us a lot about the plan for 2018.
There is no magic formula – the fundamentals of football don’t change just because we’ve had success at underage level or because pundits glamourise certain aspects of the game.
Murphy must be in goals purely because he appears to be the best keeper in the county.
Defence must include recognised defenders. Some defenders have the ability to get forward and score, classic example being Tomás. Since his retirement people are clamouring for attacking half backs. Last summer in the replay Jonathan Lyne lined out at wing back. Early in the game he soloed through and scored a great point on the run. Twenty minutes later Mayo launched a high ball into the goalmouth. When it was kicked Lyne was standing near Diarmuid O’Connor in the right full back position. O’Connor drifted in and flicked the ball to the net. Lyne didn’t smell the danger and didn’t react. Net result from the 2 scenarios – Mayo 2 points ahead.
Crowley, Murphy and Morley must be included. After that all the established defenders are replaceable. Jason Foley, Tom O’Sullivan and Brian O’Beaglaoich should be pressing hard for starting places.
Jack Barry should play all of every game in the league and should be told that at the start so that he is not afraid of making mistakes and gets a chance to blossom.
There are a number of forwards whose race is run and must be replaced. Clifford should be getting game time in the corner with licence to move out or in to give himself an advantage over “markers” who know before a ball is kicked that can’t play football with him but have a plan B. I would like to see O’Brien, P Geaney, Donaghy, O’Donoghue, and Seanie O’Shea being the main attackers come championship.

Hopefully we will see Jason Foley,Shanahan,Gavin Crowley and Gavin White feature in the early rounds in defence,Jack Barry & Brendan Sullivan should be given ample time also with Sean O Shea,Jack Savage and Clifford getting time up front

Whatever about the forward selection I hope the management sort out our defensive structure. In the drawn game against Mayo last year we left a scary amount of undefended space in front of our three fullbacks. There was a serious amount of concern voiced on both radio and all other forms of media and the prescribed answer was to play a sweeper. To be fair they tried something but in its excetution the basic error of the draws game was not addressed as in the same unmarked prairie was still there for Mayo to exploit. Unless Murphy was telepathic he could not have cut out the supply in to the empty acres all around him, to me he was almost redundant for that reason.
Keith Higgins is a serious player and he is usually tasked with dealing with O Donoghue, I'm sure Rochford thought it was an early Christmas gift when he saw him warming the bench in the replay. He could afford to commit Higgins outfield and he is an excellent defender and attacker if he is given a free hand, the extra muscle out around the middle chocked us out of the game and even when we were in possession we had to carry and hand pass most of our possession through that heavily defended area. They dropped a body or two in around Donaghy and o Shea and the danger he caused the previous week was snuffed out. Essentially we handed them a foothold in the game and they grew in confidence from there.
2018 is a year where the management will have to take a long look at themselves, I believe we still have a very good team but tactically we were very defensively naive last year. Look at the Dubs (and to a lesser degree Mayo) when the opposing team have the ball, Christ they are like a special forces unit they are so well drilled in their defensive responsibilities. The way they sprint to unmarked space to prevent the early delivery and then grind out a situation where the opposition have to take a pressurised pot at a point which usually tails wide, then sprint to their kick out location and do what they do best. They are spending many hours at the drawing board and coupled with their natural skill they are winning big games. We on the other hand are being exposed tactically.
This year we are going to have to introduce a little more bite and structure into our defensive system and our half forward line needs speed and players that go forward with menace, the other teams have to be put on the back foot by Kerry and we have to drive home our advantage in the full forward line. Whether they score directly or create openings for attacking half forwards it doesn't matter, we need to defend like lions but we have to throw off the shackles and go for it and draw a line in the sand in 2018 as of old. Oh Mick- I dont understand why you go around trying to pick childish battles with people on a regular basis but I couldnt be bothered getting into some petty argument with you. Now on my comment - everyone is going about Clifford as if he is the second coming , etc- he is an 18 year old kid who has never played senior championship before. He needs to be nurtured and I'd rather not see him in a match day squad this year at all. There has been no attempt to manage the big profile that is building around him and I do genuinely fear for him when he makes the step up as the pressure being put on such a young fella is astronomical. Added to all this is that- I have seen the younge fella play at senior championship level this year and he didnt impress just yet. Danny O Sullivan marked him out of it against KOR and he is going to have to be transitioned into dealing with senior footballers- not everyone who marks him is going to be giving up about 2 stone weight and 4 inchs in height to him.

Will Kerry have a new away jersey for the Donegal game since the Home Jersey is new I'd be doubtful for the Donegal match. We don't really change kits anymore as both jerseys are distinguishable, and Donegal's new jersey got a bit more golden than green. We'll probably see a new change jersey for the Mayo game though (if they made one)

Jack mc Caffrey, Ciaran Kilkenny, Paul Mannion were all 19 starting the 2013 championship . Jack was still 19 in the final. David Clifford is a year younger than these guys were but an incredible talent , I'd give him some game time in the league. If Kerry find themselves in an AllIreland semi-final this year and for what ever reason they need to change things and bring someone on who can get them points , David Clifford with experience from receiving a few hits in the league might be the man. It's quite possible it's a year too early for him, but that talent should at least be tried in the league , even if it's sparingly. He could learn a lot from a few older Kerry guys possibly like Donaghy who might not be around the following year.

If Con O'Callaghan was a Kerry man would he have got a run out in 2017?
I am reading Colm's book at the moment (its way better than the reviews suggested) and its amazing, looking back, that Paidi showed such faith in a 10 stone frail young player in 2002. It could have all ended in tears of course if Francie Bellow had found him in his cross hairs!

Every now and again a special talent comes along that can go into senior straight from minor
Maurice Fitzgerald and Seamus Moynihan did so and took to it like a duck to water and they were playing on bad Kerry teams when there was even more physicality that there is now- jez the cork backs then would ate you without salt!
In hurling, Eoin Kelly was used at senior level as a sub when still minor and was a starter at 19.
Clifford could be in the bracket and class of the above.
The concerning thing about it is that we need something special like him having an immediate impact to spark a change in fortunes come the business end
time to throw in 3 or 4 like Clifford, Gavin White, Sean O'Shea, Shane Murphy and hope it sparks something
