Looks like the GAA initiative to 'hand April back to the clubs' is dead before it has started.
Mayo have stuck up the 2 fingers and are buggering off for a bit of warm weather for a week
Kerry players will be training with the county for the month but will be released back at the weekend for games. As April is the biggest month for heavy training after the league has finished I am sure we will get a lot of 'knocks and niggles' which will rule players out of club games but not Kerry training. This will only fuel the club/county divide even more.
On Newstalk last weekend there were Meath and Monaghan players on the show who said there is no way they will be released back
Where will the GAA turn from here?
The winter training ban is still in place yet Kerry have been back for 2 weeks on the pitch already. I am sure pretty much all counties are the same.
It will go down as one of the craziest decisions by people who have no idea how the intercounty scene works. There is no window for heavy training during the league so teams really up the ante in April. Hard to see county players rolling out of bed on a Sunday morning to play with their club after being flogged 4 times during the week and facing into the same the following week. Hard to blame them and time will tell...

We are at breaking point now for the inter county footballer; training has commenced with Kerry as you say , national league commencing Jan; senior club championship in April, 4 games if you make the final. We are back then to training with the county, will finish on Sept 2nd if we get to the All Ireland final. County championship then on the 9th Sept, to be played off in 8 weeks, 6 games if you get to the final; then Munster club & somewhere in between divisional championships!!! Guys will soon be opting out of county panels as they will be unable to sustain such a gruesome schedule.

The club and county game seem to be moving further and further apart, are not compatible together now while performance levels between the two, in particular at the top table (top three), have become polarised.

Kerry's final NFL game is on March 25th,We play the mighty Clare 10 weeks later,Plenty of opportunity for County players to be playing competitive club football during this window,Unfortunately those at the top have other ideas

What about the fact that all intercounty teams put in a 6 week block of heavy loading at this time? They wont be able to walk for the clubs. We will know the answers in a few months.

What about an NFL semi final and final? I'd say there's a good chance you'll be proved right overall, but the league semi finals have been scrapped I think and the finals in Division One & Two are being played on 1st April.

Sure, there are plenty of free Sundays in April & early May!!!

The April window is a superficial fix to a far deeper issue - therefore it is doomed from the outset. The issue is clearly that the intercounty demands are at odds to the club scene and as long as the intercounty program runs (eight months of each year) the club game will play second fiddle. The intercounty program (and the Championship in particular) needs to be condensed into a far shorter window. Leave April to the Intercounty schedule and play the AI on the August B/H weekend. No county manager will be happy to interupt his training just ahead of the championship (April) to facility club fixtures.

Agreed, it needs further tweaking. The uneven provincial number continue to be a problem and will continue to do so. We badly need four regional groupings of 8 to streamline the whole thing.

I think two distinct seasons may be the only way to go...
Inter county from Jan to 30th July.
Club scene from 1st August to 31st December.
Some of the lesser competitions between clubs could be run off between Jan- July without the involvement of county players.
The county scene and the club scene are being elongated the whole time. These would have to be cut back some way.

Inter county football could realistically be condensed into 4 months if the will power was there. Apart from the obvious county / club clash there is a financial imperative to reduce the season. If Roscommon are spending €5000 a week what the hell are we spending. Financial madness.

Hard to gauge what the promotional value of the January tournaments and an early NFL league are to the GAA. Club provincial & Club All-Ireland series games are not catching the public imagination outside of the participating parishes.

Time for champions league type format and cut out the fooling. Look at the excitement generated by the club championship group format here in Kerry. It's not perfect but a helluva lot better than what has gone before and miles ahead of many other counties. Every result counts and players are playing highly competitive games. Way to go.

Brsdan feasa.....
You have 16 even teams in intermediate in kerry. Junior very even also.
You cant say that about intercounty.
Could you outline your champions league system....for example, if you have div one playing div 3 or div 4 thens thats a farce ....
Kilare won no game in div one. We dont even have 8 strong football counties. Hurling does...maybe nine

The top four of division one to play two semi finals and the winner play off for sam maguire trophy. Give the league cup to whoever finishes top of the league table. This could be a great competition. Every team has same number of away games. Promotion and relegation to apply as of now. It could all be run off in may, june and july. Leave the rest of the year to the clubs.

I'm an old fart and remember far more Championship mis-matches than decent contests. Ulster was a joke province for years as was Connacht and Cork apart so was Munster. Leinster occasionally rumbled but for the most part we've only had 2 / 3 decent teams in any year. Most were rubbish. I remember outlining my "master plan" 😀 on another page previously but there's no point going over it at length again. The dream scenario would be four groups with the top teams going on to A.I. semis but that's really not going to work in the short term. There really needs to be a tiered championship with two groups battling it out for Sam and two others for a B All Ireland. We've seen pretty competitive football in the league for the past few years despite the likes of Kildare not winning a game this year. People can come up with their own ideas but games in the recent past like Kerry away to Longford and at home to Sligo or Tyrone should serve as examples of what we should be looking for in the Summer......competitive games not endless weeks of hugely expensive training without games. In any case the case the current system is incompatible with the club game (the 99%) and is financially crippling counties and therefore unsustainable. Above all it's boring. If we're lucky we get excited for the quarter finals and maybe then tune in properly for the semis. It's the truth. Anything else is a crock.

The current system is farcical.
All thats is to get the top teams playing each other on a league basis in one group of death and let the semi finals be between the top four in the group and the final between the winners.
Have the next eight do the same for the Paidi OSe or Kevin Heferrnan cup.
Have the the third best group do likewise. and similarly from Division 4.
Let the cream rise to the top group via promotion and relegation.
The reason the national league is interesting is that its the only competition whereby the top 8 teams gets to play each other.

My club have 2 players currently, one of them couldn't get a game in the league at the weekend cos selectors stuck with the goalie they've used so far.

Probably better again if linked in to championship seeding.

Yes, it would tick so many boxes. Every county would get seven competitive games against teams of their own stardard. Some would get two extra games if they reached the semi final and final of each division.
Every team would get equal home and away games. The dubs would roll into Castlebar, Galway, Killarney every second year bring a boost to rural towns.
There would be few dead rubber games in a division if the top four went through to semi finals and the bottom two were relagated.
The semi finals and finals of all four divisipns could be played in croker giving all teams the aspiration of a big day in the summer in dublin.
And if could all be done in twelve weeks.

Spot on Mickmack. We all know it could be done. We all know it makes perfect sense. The majority of football fans would love the idea of those kind of big games rolling in.
Only one problem. It ain't gonna happen.
Provincial councils, central council, stupid inter county managers, sponsors, some inter county players, county boards, rogue delegates and a whole host of other stuck in the mud merchants would oppose it.
