With the new inter-county calendar released and the Kerry county board hosting an open forum this week and new fixtures proposal for 2018 will be announced at the next co.board meeting.
What would you like to see?
Kerry's final NFL game will be on 25th of March with possibly the NFL final the week after then no game until the 2nd of June.
That gives a nice window to play games in,The All Ireland Final is scheduled for the 2nd of September.

I would like to see a schedule that 1/ Is fair to players and clubs. Condensing the primary club competition into consecutive weekends is not fair due to the issue of adequate preparation, injuries, suspensions etc. 2/ Makes it attractive for younger club players to stay at home over the summer months with meaningful games or suspend the main competitions altogether and play the divisional games at that time of year. 3/ Club calendar should work with the intercounty calendar and not be sub-serviant to it.
Part of the problem remains the inter-county calendar - Croke park have tinkered with it by shortening it a couple of weeks and punching a hole in it in April. This "April hole" is a useless PR sham and the association would be better served with no April break in the intercounty scene and ending the inter county season in July. Then meaningful time will be given over to the club scene.

Agree,Divisional games should be played weekly in July/Aug and give the main comps a break..Too many away and holidaying

Just realised the A/B qualifier system is gone next year, fixtures are much more unpredictable now, next year will be fun

Kerry are out a week earlier in 2018. Also with the race for Sam concluding much earlier the KCB might take a look at that play/eat all you can window between the league & championship now. I think that historical eat all you can type window is detrimental to Kerry's preparations for later in the summer. This year for example v Mayo x 2. With the championship now even more condensed Kerry will need to address things differently next year. Which might be a blessing in disguise.

After the end of the league on the first weekend in April, Kerrys first serious game is the Munster Final on 23.6.2017. Lose that and a qualifier rolls on quickly and then its the Super 8 games. Its full on to an extent from 23.6.2017 to the end of August/early Sept..... but we all know they will be in the semi final in August as they will be in the Top Two in their group.
So being realistic, Kerry have April and May to play club games before things start gearing up to the Munster Final.
The long gap between games never suited Kerry much so they should be getting up a nice head of steam by late July-early August.

Club games shouldnt be viewed as a hindrance to the county panel but a commodity,Use them wisely,Get county players markng each other in different environments,Outside their comfort zone..Encourage our lads to get stuck in at club level before waving goodbye mid May to focus on capturing Sam

At the outset, I would like to say that Kerry County Board do a great job in running off some many competitions every year.
I believe, however that they do make life a bit hard for themselves nowadays compared to 30 years ago.
Correct me if i am wrong please but if i recall correctly there was no back door or round robin to the County Senior football and Hurling championships 30 years ago . Neither was there a club football championship.
There were no junior or intermediate club All Irelands to find a slot for either.
Back then the intercounty league started in October and Finished in April. No back door or Super 8 in the All Ireland. The Munster Final was the QF and was played in July. The semi final in August and the final in Sept.
In hurling there was no round robin or Christy Ring Cup for the hurlers.
So how can all of this be handled when the there are more games for the county players? I dont believe it can to be honest.
So what should be kept?
The junior, intermediate and senior club football competitions provide great fare between evenly matched teams for the most part so no change there.
The county league will have to become an "inter county player free zone" it seems to me... it probably is already to an extent.
The county senior championship pits sides of unequal panel strengths against each other and doesnt work till the Semi finals and final. Should there be a championship for divisional sides and a grand final between the winners of that and the county club winners at senior level.
Kerry are going to play a lot of hurling games next year at a time when players will also be called on by Feale Rangers, Shannon Rangers and St Brendans. The divisional football sides will lose out on that one.
I would not like to be on the County Baord fixtures committee next year.

The club forum took place last night in Tralee and covered off draft plan for next year's competitions. In line with Croke Park's master plan 1the month of April will be given over to all club competitions with inter county players available for games but not available to clubs in the build up as they would continue to train with county team. 2.It was proposed to split the senior and intermediate clubs into groups of 4 in a round robin style format - in the intermediate this would comprise 4 groups of 4 teams with the semi finalists from this year seeded to avoid the so called group of death; senior clubs will have the opportunity to debate this proposed change and revert to county board by the 17th of the month; this would in effect allow an extra game for senior clubs as they currently play two games to either get to a final or be the in the relegation play offs. There was much dissent expressed around the non availability of inter county players to their clubs in preparation for their games but this is unlikely to change with the early start to the Munster championship. This would mean that the starting date of the senior county championship could be 9th Sept if Kerry reached the final and that the championship would be played out in its entirety in the 8 weeks of Sept & Oct - it would be 9 weeks in 2019 as the All Ireland would be fixed for the last Sunday in August. 1.This i believe was a sore point regarding the volume of training the county players were doing the week of championship this year and good compromise would be Kerry would have one field session a week during April 2.I like the group of 4 championship but two teams must qualify out of each group to the QF,Still this championship can be wrapped up in 6 weeks Another change was discussed Friday was the moving of all age groups to odd years,So instead of u10,u12,u14 we will now have u11,u13,15 and minor will be u17.

I don't think there is any huge need to change to group stages for the senior and intermediate - I think things are fine the way they are. The main powers that be bottled the April gap by leaving it up to individual counties as to what games should be played/ how much training could be done - they should have insisted that at least one round of the county championship in both codes at every grade was played in this window in every county.

Why complicate matters by adding round robin games...surely its the "winner takes all" bite that makes these club competitions what they are

April will fall by the wayside very quickly. Sounds grand on paper in a committee room.

Has the round robin added anything positive to the County Football championship? You mention "all over the country".... taking you up on that.... do other counties all over the county have as many club competitions between Divisional club, junior club, intermediate club, senior club, junior and intermediate club players playing with the like of SK in the senior championship......... and some players involved in those also playing hurling with club and county. If you have all of that (which i think is good)...you need to get rid of round robins... winner takes all cut and thrust is what makes these competitions what they are

Once they brought in a backdoor in the inter county game it's only just that the same is afforded to the clubs

County players want to play with clubs, they want to play for their county,They want to play in the compromise rules, they want to play divisional championships, they want to play McGrath Cup,Shinty,Fenway Classic etc... Players want games be it a county player or a club player. Why can't we put together a good a fair structure for all. Players want games every week/Second week....Can we not provide that as a county?

The three standards ......time, quality and quantity..... are at play here. If more time is ate up by intercounty you have less time for clubs so do u sacrifice quality or quantity in that situation....i would sacrifice quantity and get rid of as many dead rubber games as possible

I was wondering how this would pan out in Kerry with the introduction of the April fool element as conjured up by Croker. Looks like Kerry will now push the commencement of the county championship out to September with senior club, junior and intermediate championships played in April & May while the players will remain training with Kerry. I think this will be a game changer for Kerry in terms of preparation for the big July/August window and will be welcomed by EF. It removes this play/eat all you can club football which I feel was having a detrimental impact on Kerry's preparations. Secondly, more club players in Kerry will have club championship football to look forward to in September rather than having their season pretty much ended if previously losing a club championship game earlier in April & May as before. Looks like a win win situation. www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/football/kerry-set-to-delay-start-of-championship-until-september-462445.html

Read that this morning, actually think it works out pretty ok. Club Champ can get proper focus at the start of the year. League matches through the summer, meaning regular action but not the end of the world for guys to miss here and there for holidays etc. Championship being played off in one go rather than half in April and another half in October. Training can be tapered twice for April peak and Sept peak.
Not perfect but probably better than the existing set up.

Its probably very good. Club players have a defined 7-8 month season now and know where they stand. Eamonn has the players without interruption to training and all the best club players in Kerry can aspire to playing two months of senior championship football starting in September.
What's the plan re the three finals, will they be carried over to October with a view to the Munster championships or will be they wrapped up in April and May?
