Hope you've all rode out the worst of today's aerial maelstrom and are all well and abodes in tact. How vulnerable we are. Candles for a few hours but power back now. Lucky. Those satellite images reminded me of that Day After Tomorrow film

Candles for a few hours but power back now. Lucky for some, power came back but gone again, but by the looks of it, if their fixing it, it'll be back tomorrow. With the amount of candles lit, it's like a church before an All Ireland Final. Being 200 metres above sea level, expected a lot much damage, but apart from the recycling bin lid opening and spreading recycling over the place, we got away with most. I'll have a look around the surrounding area tomorrow but in terms of my place, no trees fell, I'd say storm Darwin in '14 took the weakest trees, but that's just my idea of things,

It was only a "pattern thrasher" in Dublin.

Reports from West Kerry that it wasn't as bad as the 2014 storm.
It was fairly powerful in Cork to be fair.

Clontarf was fine luckily enough- there were lines of cars on the approach to Artane Castle shopping centre which shows you how hysteria can get out of control.
The folks said that it was grand up Tralee way aswell- hope all forum members stayed safe

In Ashbourne, Co Meath - bonus day off once I'd made sure anyone due to use the clubhouse knew we were closed. Headed to Tesco literally for bread and a few sausages - it was like the apocalypse. Gobsheens everywhere, getting aggressive in the car park. Ridiculous amounts of food and apparently drink being bought. I got my couple of items and got out of town. Eerie sky and strange heat, the expectation of it was worse than what we got. I would definitely say I've seen it worse wind wise but our power stayed on so all was rosy. Cleared a load of recorded stuff off the Sky box. Back to work today, no damage done here either so all good.

Seriously, I hope all those who thought Ophelia was such a 'non-event' were busy checking in with elderly or vulnerable neighbours on Sunday evening and yesterday, offering to help them in any way they could. Many Day Centres and Meals on wheels services (and An Post) didn't operate so people may have been left without hot food or possibly any human contact all day. Today those who are so fortunate as to be unaffected by the storm could perhaps move on to helping those still without power/water/heat.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Debbie_(1961)www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/hurricane-debbie-high-winds-death-and-destruction-in-1961-1.3256985Many years ago I was given an eye witness account of the destruction caused by Hurricane Debbie in 1961 in Kerry by people who were frightened for ever more by the thought of a repeat. The path of the Debbie seems to have been along the west coast but not over land yet Kerry was badly hit by Debbie. Ophelia came over Valentia it seems. It looks like if you are on the Eastern side of the eye you are in trouble Debbie The greatest damage occurred in a swath stretching from Kerry to Limerick as well as the counties of Sligo and Donegal. In these areas, the hurricane's powerful winds damaged or destroyed many buildings and downed trees and power lines.[13] In the hardest hit areas, communication was not restored for over four days.[10] Many roads were blocked by debris for up to two days. Crops and trees were badly damaged.[13] Approximately two percent of the trees in the forestry industry were snapped or uprooted, with some areas losing up to twenty-four percent.[8] In general, corn and wheat crops fared better than expected, with only 25–30 percent being lost; however, some farmers reported barley losses greater than 50 percent.[14] Downed trees from the storm wreaked havoc, leaving considerable damage and loss of life behind.[15] All told, Hurricane Debbie was responsible for 12 deaths in the Republic of Ireland

Ophelia will probably make the Storm All Stars but Darwin in 2014 was one of the all time greats. A bloody legend.

Darwin never delivered against the northern counties though when the chips were down.

He was outstanding in the Munster and Connacht championships.
He was burnt out from overexposure by the time he hit Ulster. More of a management issue than ability.
And everyone knows the Leinster Championship is irrelevant.
