As the title says. Have always wondered.
Do they have a say in picking the team or is the managers word final?
Do they decide the panel and the manager picks the team? Is it one man one vote?
Who decides who plays in what position?
If the manager wants to reposition players during the game does he have to ask then selectors?
If you want to make a sub do the selectors have to vote?
What does a selector actually do at training? Just watch?
If a selector says he saw a really good player at a match can he be called in or do all the selectors agree?
Are not all selectors coaches? If not do they have to be at every training or only the trial games?
Would it not make sense to have a senior selector involved with the u21s to keep an eye on the players

As the title says. Have always wondered. Do they have a say in picking the team or is the managers word final? yes but manager has ultimate decision. A good manager will listen to opinions and be willing to change his mind if necessaryDo they decide the panel and the manager picks the team? Is it one man one vote? same as above Who decides who plays in what position? sameIf the manager wants to reposition players during the game does he have to ask then selectors? i hope not. A selector can advise but should not have a vetoIf you want to make a sub do the selectors have to vote? hope not and don't think soWhat does a selector actually do at training? Just watch? it depends I guess on the selector. Some will be physical trainer, some will be involved in coaching, some will be just be observingIf a selector says he saw a really good player at a match can he be called in or do all the selectors agree? i think the mgr should sign off but a good manager will respect the opinion of a selector Are not all selectors coaches? If not do they have to be at every training or only the trial games? i doubt they all attend every session Would it not make sense to have a senior selector involved with the u21s to keep an eye on the players it would but the u21 manager might not be delightedSee above

The invisible men, can anyone name 6 selectors from around the country other than from Kerry?

Just someone for the manager to bounce ideas off? In reality they have no real say, in tactics or selection decisions unless the manager chooses to. So we have Hassett, Sheehy and Maurice doing what exactly?

Who says that the three guys are not influencing tactics and selection?

Who says that the three guys are not influencing tactics and selection? That's what I am asking. Does a selector only have as much input as the manager allows? Its only a collective if the manager wants it to be? So the term selector is a misnomer really. It's really an advisor kind of role?

I think in Kerry yes, and I think that is the way it should be. Decision by committee is awful. Teams need a leader but good leaders will take counsel from others and give them specific responsibilities. In other counties, it may work different but I don't see how this works effectively

The exact same question occurred to me after the 2 games against Mayo. If Eamonn had opted for selectors that only had club experience we would be asking why he does not include the great football brains. He has them in there but it didn't make a difference.
I think it depends on the manager. Remember the incident on the sideline with Diarmuid Murphy. Eamonn is strong willed.

Historically the selectors did pick the team with the manager hence the name but as others have said that's no longer the case.

I presume our selectors must do some coaching as well though? Or would Eamonn do it all on his own?
In mayo this week in saw they were praising donie buckely and mcentee I think for their coaching and drills. I presume Maurice and Mikey would have some input into coaching the forwards?
Just genuinely curious.
So the term selector came about really when there was four selectors nominated to represent east, west, south and north Kerry? And the manager was really the trainer / coach was also a selector? Or am I totally wrong?

Selectors were voted for at AGMs. Now managers nominate their own selectors.

I heard Donaghy during the year speak about training drills he was doing with Maurice but outside that I don't know.

I'd say our selectors do have an input on drills and tactics and even team selection.. I couldn't see too many taking on the role of 'selector' unless they had some form of input.

I'd say this GPS yoke has a bigger say in substitutions than your average selector does.

What teams have our individual selectors coached and how successfully.
If they haven't what areas of specific expertise are they bringing to the group.
There is great experience there for sure but that doesn't always transfer to game success.

A lot depends on the manager and his style of doing business. Selectors are part of the management team but the buck stops with the manager ultimately. How the manager uses his management team will vary with some tending to be democratic and others less so. A strong manager will listen to advice but will ultimately make his own decisions. Its not a one size fits all type of situation.

Correct, onlykerry. Like any team, the sideline team will have people with different approaches to the job in hand and the job they are given will depend on the manager. How much input they have will depend on how colloborative a person he is.
I'm sure McEntee has a different tack than Donie Buckley, for example, when dealing with the panel in Mayo. Can anyone name the Dublin selectors? I know I can't. Gavin is front and centre.
In his book Jack mentions asking around about on of his potential selectors, and all the feedback was negative. Yet he still brought him on board and the team didn't fare out too badly.
More seasoned members here will recall a past Kerry selector who was very keen to tell local media how the manager of the day overruled his sideline team completely in a particular game, so basically it wasn't his fault, as a selector, that Kerry lost.
Of our current selectors, Maurice managed St. Mary's to the Club All Ireland.

I think AN Other has been badly blackguarded in recent times by our inter-county selectors. As far as my memory serves me, he never had a bad game and was always there when called upon to serve his county. His pedigree goes back further even than the O' Sé's from Ard an Bhotháir. I know for a fact that his 'line' hasn't died out. I can't understand it at all.

I find it strange that Ciarraiabu 'doubts that selectors would attend every training session'.
I'd say selectors would be there 99% of the time, only missing due to the odd work commitment, family occasion or holiday.

Where are we disagreeing here? We can argue about whether it is 98% or 95% or 90% if you want😜

True. Will be interesting to see if any of EF's selectors break rank in the future about some 'mind boggling' substitutions of more recent years.

Still awaiting an answer from posters as to what teams our backroom guys have coached and to what level. And if not what expertise they are bringing.
