Let the Gooch enjoy a few uninterrupted seasons with the club first. I'd say make him the new Kerry coach, head of the county council, the new CEO of Kerry Group and the 2018 Kerry Rose

That's beneath him- that's a role for the links of Johnny Buck or Fionn Fitz

Ardfert Cathedral? My blue ar*e - the only wonder in Ardfert is how their football team seems to fit so many mentors/selectors on the pitch!

Admittedly it has fallen somewhat from its once lofty perch...
The village's name signifies, according to Sir James Ware, "a wonderful place on an eminence", or as some interpret it, "the hill of miracles." Ardfert has also been considered a corruption of Ard Ert, "the high place of Ert or Erc", so called after the 5th century Irish Bishop Saint Erc, who made the place a bishop's seat.
On the way to Cork once we stopped off at the Rock of Cashel and did the tour and the guide said that the Cathedral there was modeled on the one in Ardfert... a carbon copy almost.
So there!

Very strange debate this. The one thing the current team of selectors does not lack are playing "legends".

Some years ago, a friend of mine told me that she had the task of interviewing young people who'd applied for part time work in tourism sector in Cork City. When asked to give directions to a popular tourist attraction, the majority of them thought that the Blarney Stone was in Kerry.
I know that's off topic but the bit about the Rock Of Cashel reminded me of the story.

Okay, time to rebuild, the main question is, do we have a formula to beat Dublin (or Mayo), and if so, must we strengthen the squad to last 70-75 minutes? Possibly the majority 4 in a row minor teams? Edit: looking at the 2018 betting, looks like paddy power see the Kerry youth coming through, second favourites at 7/2

Watching the final on the player this morning it struck me that we in Kerry need to develop a bit of steel. As Donaghy put it in his book. Become the agressor.
Mayo and Dublin lads try to lay down markers and physical intimidate the opposition. Too often we just react. We don't really have a 'hard fu##ker' that sets the tone either. Not in a scumbag way but someone who leads by example.
We used have Darragh who would clean you out if he got a chance, Mahoney, Tommy G, Eamonn himself, Seamus, Eamonn Been, Flaherty, Declan, Scanlon, Kirby. If the hit was on they took it and left their mark.
The closest we have is Donaghy but he's up the field away from the action. Crowley gives the odd big shoulder but is not really aggressive in general play. Ditto Griffin.
In short we are too nice. Would you as a forward be worried about someone like Murphy, Killian, Morley, Fionn, Crowley, Griffin, or Enright putting you through the wringer physically?
The Kerry minors had it in spades yesterday

2018 will sees the new look calendar and rules meaning Mayo are less likely to face September misery as the final is being brought forward to the last Sunday in August.
It also means Semi Final replays will be rare events as all championship games (with the exception of provincial and AI finals) go to extra time.

We have no chance next year. Mayo will be the closest to Dublin again. Maybe in 2 or 3 years.

That was what most people thought back in 1975 too - and 1955 before that apparently - and the 2009 QF win (all V Dublin incidentally) ..... Fitz needs to trust the youth or hand the reins to somebody who does.

Players develop at different paces but Dublin had McCaffrey and Kilkenny in their championship team the year after they were minor.
I think Shane Ryan, Jason Foley, Tom Sullivan, Gavin White, Briain Begley, Sean O Shea and David Clifford could be ready for championship action next summer.
The elephant in the room is the lack of a 'natural' midfielder coming through so its probably time to look outside the box like the way Dublin have developed James McCarthy and Kilkenny into midfield options.

Mark Griffin needs to be given a bit of galloping room. I'd be disappointed if he wasn't given a run somewhere in the middle third, maybe even midfield. Kerry need to build from the back out. Put Kerry's attacking players with Mayo's soaking game.
