Fair play allrounder, go for it. No refs = no games. Maybe you could resolve the debate over on the Kerry Monaghan thread about the tackle, i.e. is contact after a fair tackle a foul?
Agreed sullyschoice, reffing is a great thing for a young lad to get into. It gives them a better appreciation of the game, more respect for refs, and great for their self-confidence to stand in the middle of a pitch surrounded by kids and parents on the sidelines. Not to mention the pocket money!

I've just finished up playing and I've no interest in training/managing a team so its a way of doing my bit for the club ( and keep the beer belly away!!!) Will you do umpire for me!! I have to second the "You are mad". Its a noble choice to make but jeez I'd not be doing it- you warm to a having a beer belly after a while. I really do hope that it goes well for you- I’d just be skeptical about doing it myself but each to their own. All the best with it!

I did umpire an U-21 county final a few years ago and enjoyed that. Was admiring the play of one Shane Murphy from Kilcummin. We didn't mess up any of the score-calling (we had a system going), and while we heard but did not see a punch, we saw another off the ball incident shortly afterwards, called the ref over, and that seemed to cool things down. I think the ref did OK: but forgot to play one advantage which was an issue. The referee in question no longer lives in Ireland.

What did ye make of the Gum shield sending off yesterday in Kildare?
By letter of the law the referee was correct I suppose but should common sense prevail ?
Cian O'Neill was very upset speaking to Sunday game after.

I have no sympathy for Doyle or Kildare. Everyone knows the rules. Sure why bother having rules at all.

For me the only issue is why at that time in that game - this rule is regularly flouted (like so many others in the rule book) but out of the blue a ref applies the rule correctly with a major knock on effect. Application of the rule will slip back into hibernation until it makes another sudden and inspired appearance at some future date. Consistent application of the rules is all that is required - and perhaps a simpler rule book that can be applied.

Sounds like he made a total t*t of himself on this occasion though. The referee's body needs to have a word at this stage, tell him to cop on and climb down from his lofty perch. No other ref in the country would have done this.
