Ewan Mckeanna has plenty to say about this on Colm Parkinson s podcast on sportsjoe. He is I complimentary about the wider Kerry county set up role in it.

The essence of this matter is that Brendan displayed crass stupidity . Imagine taking the advice of the man in the street rather than consulting team doctor/nutritionist. Any other issue is a mere distraction.
The hope is that other players willl not display this stupefying ignorance .
Brendan, you owe us big time!

A bit harsh there veteran but what was the guy thinking? A casual friend suggested something and he went along with it.

Chances are if he had asked the team doctor/nutritionist, they would have done what Brendan did and checked the ingredients online and would have seen there wasn't anything prohibited in it. I think he was seriously unlucky.

Harsh in the extreme here Veteran and I would say a view that the majority of true Kerry supporters would disagree with. Brendan doesn't owe us anything! He made a mistake, one he has truly paid for. I for one am behind him 100% and I hope he has a thundering championship for the Kingdom!

He would be a long way down the list of players I would want to see play in the championship this year.

What people don't understand, or at least what I don't understand, is that , in spite of having expert advice a mere phone call way, or in person at the next training session, Brendan choose to take the "advice" of a bluffer. I too hope, if EF considers him worthy of it, to see Brendan back on the panel but if he replicates that level of stupidity on the field of play then it is banishment to Siberia. Yes , I do think he owes us. His actions , generated by ignoramce I readily concede, has sullied the Kerry brand.

Ciarraiabu, Is it because of his football ability or "his mistake " that he's a long way down your list of players for the championship??

Brendan took the advice of a casual friend, went to a pharmacy and bought these and by all accounts did a load of research on this product on the internet. A two minute phone call to the nutritionist would have provided a much safer solution.

I' guess if Eamonn Fitz and the Kerry County Board think he has sullied the Kerry brand then that's the last we'll see of Brendan in a Kerry jersey. How long must one suffer for a genuine error. Brendan owes me nothing and I wish him all the best for the future.and I don't think he has sullied he's good name whatever about the Kerry brand.

Is it not that he checked the ingredients and that MHA wasnt listed on the pack but was contained within.
He provided the tub of tablets which clearly neglected to state the existence of MHA but on examination by Sports Ireland, after the test and BOS's testimony, the product was found to be contaminated with MHA.
It wasnt right for him to go on a solo run here but in his defence- he did his homework and was unlucky that the either the company manufacturing the product had not engaged in full disclosure or had poor quality control.
There's too many people trying too hard to smugly show how non-parochial they are without looking at any of the (known so far) evidence on the case.

Sport ireland say that he "bore no significant fault or negligence". Subtlety done by Sport Ireland. Quite a difference between "bore no significant fault or negligence" which is saying he is slightly at fault and "bore no fault or negligence" which completely absolves him of any wrongdoing.

Sport ireland say that he "bore no significant fault or negligence". Presumably the suspension will be removed from his record then and everybody can pretend the episode was imaginary.

There's too many people trying too hard to smugly show how non-parochial they are without looking at any of the (known so far) evidence on the case. Under international anti doping laws the duty of care is on the athlete to ensure he only uses fully safe sources. He didn't like the taste of the Kerry GAA supplement and went on a solo run and has to face the consequences and due process as a result. That's it in a nutshell. Usain Bolt lost a medal from 2008 as a team mate tested positive for MHA even though it was not even specified on the list of banned substances at the time. I had to read the below article again to get my head around it. My issue is that pure amateurs who hold down full time jobs cannot be expected to even begin to keep on time of their dietary intake to these standards. But under the law, Brendan is guilty as charged. SPN.com news services Jamaican sprinter Nesta Carter has appealed the ruling that cost him, Usain Bolt and the rest of the Jamaican 4x100-meter relay team a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Court of Arbitration for Sport, which confirmed Carter filed the appeal Wednesday, said in a statement Friday that Carter was seeking "to set aside the challenged decision in order for the Jamaican team to be reinstated as gold medallists." The CAS said an arbitration process was in progress, but did not give an indication of how long the process was likely to take. In January, the International Olympic Committee said Carter tested positive for methylhexaneamine, a banned stimulant, in reanalysis of samples from the 2008 Beijing Games. Though methylhexaneamine was not specifically named on the 2008 list of prohibited substances, it "fell within the scope of the general prohibition of stimulants having a similar chemical structure or similar biological effect as the listed stimulants," the three-member IOC panel wrote. The IOC referred to a possible challenge from Carter on those grounds in its written verdict. "The Court of Arbitration for Sport has confirmed that the presence or use of substances falling within the scope of generic definitions of the prohibited list, can be used as a basis of establishing anti-doping rules violations," the verdict said.

Correct, which is why the suspension is 5 months rather than 4 years. Brendan has not been exonerated here. I

The player did nothing wrong but did not follow best practice (exclusively official sources for his supplements) - he made efforts to ensure what he was doing was kosher but ultimatley his solo run backfired. A reduced ban was a pragmatic outcome but the ban is essential to remind all others that best practice should be followed and risks avoided. Now get out there and show everybody what you got - he is a powerful player on the ball - let his football do the talking and let his case be a warning to others to avoid buying Sh*t# from unproven sources.

While I do agree that he shouldnt have gone on a solo run- in his defence he did look up the ingredients to ensure that there was no banned substances. This is very much new ground for the GAA and people are still feeling their way in the dark a bit- I'm not sure comparing it to sports such as athletics is fair either due to the history that other sports have of testing, of issues and of high profile participants being caught.

And I should add, fringe panellists who may be called in at any point during the year.

It's a minefield in the context of purely amateur GAA players holding down full time jobs, living in the community and having to address career development off the pitch, as outlined in the article above. The possibility of tarnishing of the innocent must be huge. The demands and expectations placed on these players at the top table has gone through the roof.

The strange thing is that Marc O Se on the radio the other evening suggested that there was no mention of this incident in the group last year. I would have thought that after it happened there would have been a big talk on the protocols to be adhered to and the importance of this in light of a 'possible' failed test.

Sport ireland say that he "bore no significant fault or negligence". Presumably the suspension will be removed from his record then and everybody can pretend the episode was imaginary. In todays indo there is an article which says that he received little or no information about anti doping guidelines since his arrival on the kerry squad months earlier though acknowledged that he was advised to consult if he was considering taking anything outside the provided list. The committee noted "confusion" over the flow of information to the player. In the 14 days prior to the league final brendan took whey protein, pre fuel, caffeine tablets, caffeine gel, vitamin c and krill oil magnesium. He took the fatal caffeine tablet, falcon labs oxyburn pro superthermotech (which he had sourced himself) at half time as he had an aversion to cafeine gel which was provided by the kerry nutritionist.

The overriding feeling i have is that the committee knew they had the equivilent of someone caught speeding at 32 in a 30 km zone....and they went out of their way to give him a fair hearing....the unopened box of tabs were sent to cologne for analysis ....and that delayed matters. They had to give him a suspension but maybe gave the minimum.
Perhaps they realised that Brendan o sullivan has a "brand" too that needed to be protected.
