Big improvement needed here. Changes in the backs and forwards leave Kealy Moran and Barry as they are. Tyrone will be up for this game.

Any hope of seeing Shane Murphy in the squad? He was outstanding versus Rathmore on Saturday night!

Any hope of seeing Shane Murphy in the squad? He was outstanding versus Rathmore on Saturday night! he should be #1 in my opinion. he deserves his chance. is there anybody else apart from Buckley, Gooch, Fionn and hopefully White to come into the squad now?

But what team would you pick that will put more scores on the board than tyrone given that tyrone will be as well organised as monaghan, dublin, mayo and cavan in defense. What attacking ploys and strategies would you employ that could garner scores without at the same time leaking scores to turnovers

I don't think Mark Griffin is a full back and I think he is being badly treated by being hung out to dry there by the management. That said he always does well on the bigger men inside around the square like Michael Murphy etc co I assume he will mark Sean Cavanagh if he starts full forward on Sunday.
Fionn Fitz is too light as this level especially in the corner. I will say that he is comfortable on the ball so maybe its him and not Paul Murphy should be a defensive half forward.
As bad as our defence has been this campaign our forward issues are massive. We are not a cohesive unit and constantly struggle when team play deep against us.
The only forward who has produced anything on a consistent basis is Paul Geaney. I hate to say it but, Donnachdha has been poor in the league. Not as poor as others mind. I have watched him closely in the last few games.
The amount of frees he gives away is crazy.

I hear what your saying about Fionn being too light at this level but this Tyrone team have some very small and nifty forwards that might match up good for Fionn pound for pound especially now that he is very sharp after the club campaign he might work for this assignment .

What is meant by cohesive in the context of an opposing defense with 14 men in their own half and not even contesting the opposition kickout?

I think Dermot has caught his pessimism from this forum.
Seven positives from The league
1. Jack Barry has allowed Moran to play football. 2. Shananhan Barry,Mc Carthy, Spillane, Savage have got a lot of gametime which will be of benefit later on. 3. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN TWO YEARS WE OUTPLAYED THE DUBS OVER 70 MINUTES OF FOOTBALL. 4 Keely has improved his kickouts. 5. Tadhg Morley has bedded in as a really good half back. 6. Kerry Mgt. understand that you need 4 working forwards and 2 scoring to beat the dubs. 7.They also understand that speed from the Half back line is critical. I Know some of you will post 7 negatives like inconsistency, lack of scoring in forward line but the only game that EF got wrong was the Monaghan match, which was Shehans fault, and I am sure we will beat Tyrone next week, Watching the warm up in Cavan you could see that our lads were not in the Zone because we trained on Saturday. CAvan will not be a threat later on Tyrone will be,

Dermot - Tyrone will still be in the shake-up come August. They seem to struggle with Donegal and Mayo in last few encounters, but have no fear of the Dubs. What odds they may 'do a Donegal' on Dublin in August?
As for ourselves, the air of pessimism since Cavan is similar to other games vs Monaghan, and Ross last year. I still think we are very close, and a lot will depend on the freshening up we get from a few of the 21s in the Summer. Hopefully, they will get their chance.

Levels of pessimism and criticism are over the top here without many plausible, realistic or innovative suggestions as to how things may be changed around so that we can win back Sam in September.
With all due respect to posters here the endless recycling of Shane Murphy / Ryan for goals, Mark Griffin for centre back, Brendan O'Sullivan for midfield etc. are becoming tedious. They will come in at the right time I'm sure or when recovered from injury. We've had plenty experience and knowledge on the sideline to get the best from our players and still do.
Under Fitzy and his various backroom teams we have been in the top three teams every year despite indifferent league campaigns. We are unlucky to be competing in the same era as a superb Dublin outfit ...undoubtedly their greatest ever. Were it not for this top rival we would surely have a couple of extra titles in the bag.
While in a period of major transition we have been competitive even if playing poorly at times. Basic mistakes by players have cost us dearly and with even a 1 % swing in the big clashes we would be lauding this team and its management. Neither are above criticism but I'm minded of Páidí's words about Kerry fans too.
A great number of new players have been blooded and Kerry are one of only 2 / 3 teams rising to the Dublin challenge. Granted the team is inconsistent and at times frustrating but I am confident we will emerge once again in the summer ready to do battle.
In the meantime roll on Tyrone and an intriguing clash in Killarney. They'll be a great test for a fresher, sharper Kerry team. Faith in Fitzy and faith in the green 'n' gold.

What is meant by cohesive in the context of an opposing defense with 14 men in their own half and not even contesting the opposition kickout? Cohesive in this context means that when we get the ball up the pitch and are confronted by a wall of defenders on the 45m line we don't look like a bunch of startled rabbits. We have seen it time and again. Not panic and recycle the ball at nauseum if needs be. Watching the match above in Cavan the last day it seemed like we hadn't prepared at all for it. Also cohesive in terms that we look like we have played together before. Sunday we were constantly giving away ball with poor pass selection and pass execution. It just seems like we are playing off the cuff as opposed to a plan. Which would be essential against the blanket. Another thing. The constant movement of Paul Murphy up and down the pitch is also hindering the development of on field relationships between players. People learn where to expect the runner to come from by playing together.

We win and there's a small chance we make the final. They win and there's a slightly bigger chance they make the final. Virtually no chance of either of us being relegated. Who wants to be the sacrificial offering on the altar of Dublin's five in a row attempt? A draw might be the best possible result for both of us?

If we are afraid to play Dublin we may as well throw our hat at it.
In a different sport an Irish team practically flagellated itself to avoid playing the market leaders.
If you wanna be the best you better wanna meet the best.

Some disturbing sentiments being expressed here - We always go out to win and that should never change. We have a developing side and every competitive game adds to our learning particularly with the newer players - we drew with Dublin a few weeks past and I think we learnt a lot (and are rightly dissapointed we lost), another game against Dublin (irrespective of the result) will continue to add to this developing squad and we need every opportunity to build. We are Kerry - we fear nobody and if we have lost our mojo in this regard we are indeed in trouble. Every game is there to be won and there is no place for surrender in our mentality.

Well said Annascaul and Only Kerry.
The only white flag that should be raised is at the foot of an umpire.
The more we strive to battle the Dubs the closer the end of their dominance.

As a general rule we should be prepared to take on all comers but at the moment I think it is different for a few reasons.
Firstly to do that you would need to be picking from a full squad. Kerry management have decided not to include u21s. Donegal had 6 u21 against Monaghan last Sunday. 3 clubs were involved in club competitions during the league and players from those clubs have not settled back in yet.
Also some new players like Shanahan and Savage have taken on this Dublin team and not been beaten. Sending them back out against them again in the lions den with Dublin seeking revenge serves no purpose.
You choose your battles to win the war. The u21 AI is now far more important.

the whole Dublin hoodoo extends beyond the Kerry team. I have been saying for about 3 years that the Dubs are beatable but what's beating other teams is their own mindset. I watch the Dublin team at very close quarters in most of their matches played in Croke Park. There have been occasions where you could see that if their opposition had even half of the self belief/killer instinct they possess they could have seen them off. Mayo in the first playing of last year's All Ireland was a case in point, the next day Mayo played silly buggers running out on to the pitch with the Dubs, their focus was elsewhere, the game was lost.
I know Darragh was never one for sports psychologists etc but there has to be something in it, who'd have thought that having Bernard Dunne and a yoga teacher in the back room team would be effective. It's the positivity they bring, sounds simplistic but I'm convinced it has a bearing. Maybe we need to be a bit more New Age in our thinking.

And I was silly enough to post on here a few weeks ago that we'd win the AI this year ... not looking too likely

What odds they may 'do a Donegal' on Dublin in August? Yeah MeathExile, we possibly will be, but unless something drastic changes, we'll come unstuck at some stage, possibly by the hand (or foot) of yourselves, Donegal, Mayo or Dublin ... We're a bit like the Irish Rugby team in that we have absolutely no consistency but can put in a great performance every once in a while .. and that will win nothing.. We're making the chances but cant convert .. its 12-18 wides almost every game with a few dropped short to the keeper for good measure .. and we are still missing our free's which leaves our opposition in no doubt where best to concede them ... Its appalling as its been the same now for quite a few years ... I'm sure once or twice we'll be kicking them over for fun but unless we can do it consistently (which we obviously still cant) I honestly dont believe we have a snowballs chance in hell of reaching the promised land

That is why from time to time we get posts here hankering for that ingredient Kerry always had. There are a lot of ordinary footballers in the present Dublin squad.

Kerryexile I like your post. Reminds me of the Pele movie where, before a World Cup final, the manager instructed them to abandon the regimented format they had practiced. He told them to go out and play the Brazilian way, make wizardry like only Brazil could, play the beautiful game. They did and they won Dermot, it's only April. But ye do a free taker like ourselves

Give our seniors a break and let the under 21's take on Tyrone. The boys might show the men a thing or two before championship starts.
