It will make the business end more competitive with more meaningful games. The reality is that the weaker teams cannot compete at the business end. Indeed the league proves that. What are the gaa going to do? Introduce a handicap system for the stronger teams? Separately if anyone watched congress in action this morning. It was most impressive. I may not agree with all their decisions, however it is most democratic and transparent. 70% of players club and county are opposed 76% of delegates vote for.I think it's been a bad day for club football. Don't be fooled by television. I can't see the democracy. The powers that be say they are improving things for players, particularly club players. 76% of delegates vote for something that 70% of players are opposed to. Do the club officials not represent the views of the club at county board meetings? And then do the co. board officials not represent the views of the county at congress? Clearly that's not happening. It could be explained by the fact that club officials only bring their own personal opinion to co board meetings. But isn't the object of the exercise (bringing forward the All-Ireland, getting rid of replays etc) to improve things for players????? Personally I am totally against the change. I think it is another symptom of the disease that gave us Brexit and Trump. It has sky television written all over it. An Australian billionaire is deciding the AI fixtures.

I think it is another symptom of the disease that gave us Brexit and Trump. It has sky television written all over it. An Australian billionaire is deciding the AI fixtures. Speaking of Democracy, Trump and Autocrats in general...... The following is from today's Examiner. Tipperary admit that Congress motions were taken en bloc
A prominent Tipperary official has admitted that county board delegates voted on GAA Director General Paraic Duffy’s Congress proposals en bloc, rather than as separate motions, writes Jackie Cahill.
Last week, the Premier County voted 36-20 in favour of the ‘super 8’ format, which was subsequently voted in at the weekend’s Annual Congress. But it is understood that a number of delegates who attended the Tipperary county board meeting would have voted against the ‘super 8’ proposal – had it been presented as a single motion for debate.
Instead, delegates voted on the ‘super 8’, the abolition of championship replays and bringing back All-Ireland final dates to August en bloc. Speaking to Tipp FM’s Extra-Time last night, Central Council delegate Sean Nugent confirmed: “They were put en bloc.”
And Nugent, a former county board chairman, insisted: “Paraic Duffy and the Uachtrarán (Aogán Ó Fearghail) said these are a trilogy of motions, they’re all connected.
“Those motions came up on the screen at the county board meeting, one, two, three, whatever number they were, they came up together.
“They came up together, I agree with that, but they were all discussed.”
A texter to last night’s show, who claims to have attended last week’s meeting, revealed that he/she was in favour of abolishing championship replays, but against the ‘super 8’ suggestion, adding that “it was a big blunder not to put the motions separately.”
Nugent added: “What I would say, and everybody that was at county board would agree with me, was that the major debate was in regard to the round-robin in the football, the whole debate was basically around that.
“While the All-Ireland finals back to August was discussed and the replays were briefly discussed, the main discussion was, without question, the round-robin. “The vote was taken – that was the result you got.”
Tipp’s vote flew in the face of the wishes of Tipperary senior football manager Liam Kearns, his players and the county’s football committee.
And Nugent said: “They have discussed it and debated it and are coming at it from their own particular angles on it. You maybe have a manager like Liam Kearns coming from the angle of the county players and the round-robin, and they probably feel it doesn’t favour them.”

County delegates need to carry the clubs vote forward to Congress, regardless of their own personal opinion. But is that happening? And why are some speakers allowed the floor at Congress (a la Tony Scullion, the black card) before a vote is taken, other than to try and sway a few delegates at the last minute? Is that democracy?

There does seem to be a growing belief or notion that the players' opinions on these matters should be the ultimate arbiter with a lot of these things which I'm very much unconvinced by.
We are all stakeholders in the GAA and all have views on what should be done and why.
Players are probably more likely to have opinions based on narrow, short term, selfish goals (from the POV of helping them personally achieve the maximum in a short career), and if anything I'd be inclined to take what they have to say with a bigger grain of salt than for non-players.

Good post and perspective. Is there a case here of the CPA & GPA throwing their toys out of the pram because their milk and Liga was cold and they were not consulted? Slighted because the new body, the CPA, were not as of yet formally recognised by Croke Park and the GPA not consulted as they were asleep at the wheel as suggested by Osin McConville? This is the first step in meaningful change and should be embraced by all, moving the finals is a massive concession to the club players in my opinion as is loss of revenue from replays.

Amusing to hear Early whinging over the weekend about the GPA players not being consulted about change. Early endorsed pay per view late last year without consulting the grassroots supporters. Give us a break Dermot like a good man and get off the pedestal. Incidentally, the Super 8 sounds like a brand ready made for Sky to latch onto. Maybe we should deliver some cake to the GPA offices in Croker for the lads. Perhaps the conflict of interest regarding his uncle and Sky Sports played a part.

If we had a super 8 it could be great but we only have a super 4 at the moment.
Imagine if this system were in place in 2006 or 2007 when Kerry, Tyrone, Cork and Armagh were strong and in the one group. Some fun away in Omagh and Armagh with only the top two teams to go through.
I would tweak it to a super 6 in one Group with the top 4 to go to the semi finals.
The problem at the moment is that if Kerry, Dublin, Tyrone and Mayo are in two groups, all four will go through to the semi finals without too much bother.

At the moment their are some counties trying to get back to where they once were , others just trying to improve steadily from a low starting base. Promotion to Div 1 helps in this regard and is a realistic goal at the start of the year for Derry, Down, Cork, Meath,Kildare, Galway. Cavan, Monaghan,Roscommon have made it there . But then there is gap to Dublin, Kerry, Mayo and possibly Tyrone then Donegal come championship.
The super 8 might offer a realistic chance for all those counties to get into a group stage. Something to aim for at the start of the year, , winning leinster with Dublin there might not seem achieveable for a lot of counties in Leinster but getting into the last 8 would. They are then guaranteed three tough games and invaluable experience.
Ofcourse there might be hammerings or just maybe certain teams will come back the next year stronger for having been in the group stages. We won't know till it happens. Again I don't think any of this will help the really weak counties, I think they need a proper thought out championship run separate to this .

The GPA have lost the battle here quite easily for a number of reasons:
1) They did not understand their remit and role 2) They dont understand what constitutes a consultation 3) They are not trying a scatter gun approach to blaming others, and finally 4) They appointed a man who is a very poor speaker, who cant think on his feet and who cant get his point across
When the GPA got taken into the inner circle and started to receive funding they needed to drop the victim tag- they havent done so yet.
