Yes the structures have played an important role but remember we have 4 hogan cup winning school sides backboning these minor teams - we have a definite purple patch when it comes to young talent coming through and good structures are helping harness and build on the talent.
One very respected manager would go so far as to say investing in the schools structure rather than adding a new layer (the development panels) would pay even greater dividends.

Deividas Uosis, a good Daingean ainm, what will MOM have to say about that when Deividas stops a haymaker?, I hear he is v classy, does hail from east or west, north or south? Negligible NK presence, is NK weak or is the standard that high? We regularly make comment on the lack of NK players which caused me to look at terrace talks database of players and interestingly Emmets are the only NK club to feature in the top 15 producing minor clubs in Kerry history. Historically SK produce more minors. Stacks, Crokes & Dingle occupy spots 1,2 & 3. On the same theme I was looking at the correlation between Kerry minor representatives and Senior club success and it is interesting to see 10 of the 12 Division 1 club sides are in the top 15 for producing Kerry minors. Templenoe and Desmonds are the "surprise" packets with Desmonds in particular as they have only had four Kerry minors in the past 14 years or so. Deenihan in call for North Kerry team

they will surely have to review how the munster minor championship plays out. Clare will be beaten by Kerry in the Munster final, their second loss to Kerry in the championship, and still be in an all ireland quarter final. Cork meanwhile lose one game and are out of everything. It's a ludicrous situation in fairness. The same happened Kerry a few years back. They lost to Tipp twice in Munster yet made (I think) an All Ireland semi final. but whoever loses the munster semi is gone. Crazy set-up and Cork are the victims again this year. A good side, by all accounts, and they're finished by the 10th of May. Effectively punished for winning their opening game. Why do Kerry and Cork put up with this system every year? There's a major incentive as it stands to actually throw the opening game.

I think there has been a recognition that young lads need quality management and proper coaching - Going back a few years the quality of the management was decidedly mixed. I honestly think along with the development squads the club coaches have got better too very good coaches involved at under age now , u just look at the likes of firies playing div 1 , kilgarven/ tousist and cordal/scart in division 2 these teams usually don't be up this high it's all down to good coaching at under age. Was a massive performance by kerry last night from 1 to 15 and some subs even put there hands up ... Clifford was unbelievable and so was O Connor at midfield. Well done to all Were you at the game? Should Donal O Sullivan have been taken off early in the second half considering he has a far bigger game coming up next week? And excuse my french but i think that's pure tripe by you about the coaches, the only reason the other teams are excelling is because they are joined! The only good coaching these lads are getting is with the schools! Who even trains them teams you're on about?

Ah give it a rest Kerrygold. A fantastic result, well done to Peter Keane and his players for ensuring they will be playing football into August. Clare in a Munster Final isnt going to be a test so it will likely to be the semi final before they are challenged (probably against Galway). The systems in place in the county now mean that will we consistently have a minor team more than capable of winning the All Ireland. I want to see the KCB aggressively taking on Kennelly. The outgoing chairman spoke of players being pursued and harassed. Kennelly shouldn't have a free lunch on his cherry picking of Kerry's best young players. He has got the gem from this group so if he has any interested in Kerry football he should * off somewhere else now for his next acquisition. The KCB need to make it as attractive for young players to buy into brand Kerry and what that has to offer. www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/minding-and-marking-kerrys-teenage-star-david-clifford-449891.html www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/gaelic-football/kerry-fret-over-clifford-as-oconnor-takes-afl-by-storm-35706688.html

Clifford is nowhere near the same type of athlete as o Connor and on the face of it would seem less suitable to afl

AFL have a very definite list of attributes they look for in athletes they recruit and these do not always translate into what makes a class GAA player - they put huge stock in the speed, agility and other tests they perform in their recruitment process.
I note we have a rematch against Clare in the minor final - Clare make the Munster final for the first time in 23 years and I bet the excitement will be massive for them. I remember talking to some of the Clare parents before one of our encounters with them in recent years and they were talking about the fund raising efforts they went to to get tracksuits and kit for their lads - contrast this to the excellent treatment our boys get and you have to say Clare are well due the reward of a Munster final - one of the side effects of the draw system we criticise.

The guys who have made any success of it in aus have tended to do so by playing more defensive roles than what they would have done in gaa.

What can the kerry county board do to make playing for kerry more attractive than going to oz Based on what a lot of 18 / 19 year old trialists have said in interviews a phone is top of the list. On a more serious note it totally depends on what the young fella wants out of life. They should sit down and talk to him and any others. One size doesn't fit all. Assistance with jobs or education, expensive holidays if part of the senior squad, not having to worry about what to do after 30, not having to emigrate are all carrots that could be dangled.

Yes was at the game and how is next Tuesday nights game "a far bigger game " Yes of course the schools coaching helps too, theres alot of teams joined up some with 3/4 teams because of short numbers and there not playing in top division s ?? It takes up to 5 or 6 underage coaches to get these lads up to minors and they do help to mature these lads. Do you think so that club coaches do nothing ?? As from your remark above

You would have to think that the Kerry net is wide and deep but do selectors or "eyes" go to watch club games anymore ?
I watch a lot of games and cannot recall seeing anyone at a minor game for years. There are lots of guys in smaller schools and divisional teams that do not get a look in. I'm certainly not the only one to think this.
Also many guys in clubs are left scratching their heads at regional development squad selections.

What can the kerry county board do to make playing for kerry more attractive than going to oz This is the dilemma. College scholarships are not enough. And there is only so much else the county board can do to get work for players in the county. To play for Kerry seniors you really need to be living AND working in the county. The work should not involve driving a few hundred KM a day. Given the lack of tech opportunities in the county, fellas will either become professionals working as solicitors, accountants etc. or teachers or work in the bank. Or the family business. Or else just take to twitter promoting mattresses, Audis, sports gear, phones etc and make enough money to get you through your 20s. This does not appeal to some people I guess. And could you blame them? Although some people on here seem to be blaming them.

I have seen members of the minor management at pretty much every school and club game I have gone to this year. The minor and dev squad selection process seems to be working just fine in my view. I suggest you check out the minor league semi finals on Friday week and I am sure you will see a member of minor management at most of them. Their pictures are on the main website if you dont know what they look like.

What can the kerry county board do to make playing for kerry more attractive than going to oz You can't really make it more attractive, but there needs to be some sort of cap put in place, by the GAA or whoever. Like 1 player per county per 3 years. Because as it is we're completely defenceless, they could literally take about 20 of our players if they felt like it. We're just living in hope- hope the AFL don't come calling, hope that if they do the player will show the kind of loyalty that Star showed when he turned down a basketball career in the states for a career in green & gold. Hope that the AFL clubs won't fancy him on his trial. Hope that the player gets homesick and comes back in a few months. The worst thing is it's out of our hands.

We all know the management are doing well and will try to cover all bases. Never post when hangry! But the points I raised are often asked by club coaches so I'm not the only one thinking this. As for your reply Champers try to be a little less patronising. I know full well who the management are and what they look like. I am also aware that of the minor semis next Friday. Perhaps you weren't aware of the minor finals also on the same evening.

Unrealistic - players are not under contract to the GAA and are therefore free agents to do what they wish. We can try to get the AFL to impose limits on their clubs with regard to how many contracts they offer but this requires their co-operation with the only stick in the GAA's hands is refusal to play compromise rules which is rather weak. The attraction of a pro career in sport is huge and most youngsters would jump at the opportunity - they need to understand the risks and pitfalls and we need to make staying more attractive - sort out our own (fixture) mess and improve player welfare. AFL have a defined season (with a real closed season), players not being pulled and dragged in several different directions (club, college, county) and they are getting paid (which as an amateur association is out for us).

As I see it, Kerry will be hit hardest and while Tadhg has courted us, to be fair to him he has never hidden the fact that his future life is down under. From that you can assume that the head and pocket will over rule the heart and the evidence is being laid bare. It will now fall to Kerry to deal with the threat it presents regardless of what is said, other counties will and in practice look to us for leadership here. It is damage limitation and we have already lost a few Sams through Tommy leaving and now Mark. I personally saw the Compromise series as dancing with the devil and while I have nothing only admiration for global success by talented stars, I think the GAA should act smarter when cheque books start opening. I'd be surprised that those better placed than me didn't flag this risk down the years, and there is no benefit in the series for GAA players, well apart from the risk to their health as Mickey Harte pointed out. This is a conversation we need to have sooner rather than later or fellas like Clifford will be packing.

You're ignoring the facts and being too easily sucked in by the story of his journey- if said occurrence had been a one off then maybe you'd be right but the same crap popped up every preseason. Don't be under any illusion that he has ever given a fiddlers about Kerry GAA- as far as I can see it's always been about raising his own profile. He did win an all Ireland but fecked off after one year- once he had received all the plaudits about being the first man to win it along with a grand final. He wanted headlines for himself and once that was ticked off there was no need to stay in 2010- although he did talk about it when undergoing contract negotiations

It is not my way to slag people off under the cloak of anonymity. To my regret I broke that rule once when speaking of Mr. Kennelly and Control rightly deleted the post.
I have thought about this topic a lot and I think the poster who said about players being able to have decent jobs and live in Kerry is key. It won't stop a guy who is hell-bent in Australia but it might make playing for Kerry more attractive. Many inter-county squads have limits on how often they get together because so many commute.
Going away must be a bit of a wrench for guys too and I have always respected Kennelly for making it in Oz.
