Very disappointing second half. You know you're in trouble when Barry John is your only scoring threat and target man. Why do they persist with Moran taking the frees. It doesn't do his confidence any good just continually missing. One plus was Jack Barry's strong attacking runs in the first half.

After the highs of Letterkenny this one was hard to take. The wides and missed goal chances in the first half kept Mayo in it. Otherwise they wouldn't have staged such a comeback. Too many Rookies and lack of experience resulted in missed passes and turnovers which cost Kerry the second half. The Dubs only drew with Tyrone so we might be still in it. I hate losing to Mayo. How old is Andy Moran? Glad its only February.

Enough with the "it's just February" nonsense, that excuse seems to have found a home in our vocabulary in recent times. There are players on this squad who have been tried and tried again and again, they are simply not good enough!

It doesn't do his confidence any good just continually missing. One plus was Jack Barry's strong attacking runs in the first half. & Moran takes the penalties & everything else as well. He must have lost or kicked the ball away more times than any other player last night. IMO he doesn't have the presence or the drive to be a top midfielder , he had one good year in 14 but has gone backwards again . I'd be trying Adrian Spillane, Brendan O Sullivan, mark Griffin' or Maher with Jack Barry, we need a bit of drive not fellows holding & then trying to go around lads when theve no pace to do it.

Yes it is Feb and yes we are missing players but there are some unpalatable truths that need to be digested as they are recurring themes: - Kelly or Kealy are not of the standard required, their kicking game, long or short wont do - Griffin is not up to it as he simply cant mark tightly, that is a prerequisute for a county defender - David Moran should be told to stay away from placed balls anywhere on the pitch and should stop his ridiculous high risk cross field passes - Mikey Geaney should cut out the countless handling and kicking errors he is making as every game I have seen him he mixes the good with the terrible - Fitzy and his trusted lieutenants are freezing on the line when obvious moves need to be made. Griffin got roasted last nite and needed to be carted or at least moved elsewhere.
Not good enough and a 3 point win over an abject Donegal, who are shorn of so many players, fooled far too many on this forum.

Last night wasn't as bad as the equivalent game last year when we lost to Roscommon. Yes it's February and yes it's only the League but after the Donegal victory we were entitled to hope that we were back in business. But the signs were there in Letterkenny where we couldn't manage a decent lead and could have let Donegal in at the death. I thought at the time that a better team would have capitalised on this and that's exactly what happened last night.
If we continue on in this vein we will be destroyed by Dublin and Tyrone. We are too dependent on Paul Geaney and James and for God's sake keep David Moran away from a dead ball. His penalty miss literally cost us the game and as in similar situations his confidence dropped immediately afterwards.

Shocking to lose at home to Mayo, when will fitzmaurice seethat Murphy is not a forward, never will be, four legion men in the squad 1 rathmore this shows guys are not picked on form or merit, county championship form doesn't seem to matter, out of new guys Adrian Spillane was only one picked on county champ form it looks lik, Conor Keane never inter county standard playing bad football with two years, mikey Geaney not up to standard, donnacha Walsh and Murphy too defensive minded. Savage looks bright, Ronan Shanahan not up to this standard didn't stand out in county champ so where was his form to get picked, mikey sheehy perhaps, shocking on the line again no clue

Perspective is needed now and we must take into context that if we had the team that played against Donegal, then in all probability we would have won this game; the loss of Jameso, Paul G & Killian was too much of an ask against an experienced team like Mayo. However, some old failings remain namely the concession of countless frees in scoring positions- Cillian O'Connor with 9 points from placed balls while missing another 3, 2 of which were well within his range- either we are ill disciplined or not good enough and the latter is afraid my opinion- we are persisting with guys who are not up to the mark and the sooner we can blood the likes of Jason Foley, Gavin White, Andrew Barry the better. The second more worrying is the inaction on the line similar to previous other games under Fitzy's reign- shades of Marc vs Brogan from the league final with Mark Griffin/Andy Moran last night- surely we could have moved someone else to nullify Moran's influence?? Surely we have a defensive strategy to employ if things are not working according to plan? Dropping a sweeper back in front of the full back line would have been an obvious option. Also, am wondering how Conor Keane came to start last nights game? He was in the US for the summer last year, played no football of any significance at club level yet was considered good enough to start a national league game last night- more questions than answers!

andy moran is a very poor player, for him to be worrying us, there must be something wrong! or else its February. Can't see any evidence to back that up.He's coming near the end of his career now of course. A very tricky forward whilst not a prolific scorer, is very well rounded and a leader. He's given Marc a torrid time on a couple occasions, 11 and 2014. For his height very good at winning his own ball, even isolated against Dublin last year, good under pressure and on big days and kicks scores on same. Worrying yes that he was such a big problem on a Feb night. Worrying that big leads are coughed up, although this a trait stretching back at least 17 years and counting. Can't either understand the persistence with same keepers and David on dead balls, from frees especially.

Very disappointing to lose this one after such a promising start but a few factors stand out.
Losing James, Paul and Killian - not many teams could withstand that.
Luckless in front of goal in the first half - we could have had 4 goals by the interval, by which time the game should have been over. Tom O'Sullivan also missed 2 handy points after great runs; he's not short of confidence anyway.
ffs, can David stop with the placed balls. He never, ever scores. This has been going on for years. Surely to God someone else can have a go; it can't get any worse.
As no-one else seems to want to moan about the ref, here goes.. In my opinion, Padraig Hughes had a stinker last night. Mayo were awarded 12 scoreable frees, converting 9. We got 2, and none after the first 10 minutes or so. That's an amazing disparity in any game. Not that they were all bad calls but some were awfully soft and even-handed Mr Hughes most certainly wasn't. In particular, there were several instances of Kerry backs being fouled in possession, only to be whistled for overcarrying. At the end of the day, frees were the decisive factor in this game; they kept Mayo in it first-half, and won it in the second.

Some of the comments here regarding Andy Moran come across as bitter as well as being disrespectful. Andy Moran is and has been a fine inter county player for Mayo for a long time. His performances against Dublin in both finals and against Tyrone last year alone attest to that. I find that there is somewhat of an over reaction to the result, also. We had ample chances in the first half and didn't take them, it would have ended the game as a contest, however, that's neither here nor there. The loss of Jameso, Paul Geaney, Killian Young et al left us with far too many young and inexperienced players up against one of the most experienced and powerful teams over the last 6 years. Mayo finished the game with close to their championship team, we were miles off that. They bossed us and imposed themselves on us for the last 45 minutes of the game. That said, Kerry did a lot of things right, some of the football we played in the opening 30 minutes was fantastic. Jack Barry will, in time, be a huge asset to the team and a lot of lads will have learned a huge amount against such a decent team. Mayo will have to try and win an All Ireland with the panel they had last night plus Keegan and Aidan O Shea. I think that, come August and if both teams meet in a semi final, we will have a greater amount of resources at our disposal. We lost the foothold in midfield and that was the end of it really, Kerry never looked as if they would win the game once Mayo reeled off those scores in the 2nd half. Whilst it's always disappointing to lose a game we were in a position to win, there's a lot to be taken from games like these. Well done to Mayo, they're a fine team and they played with power and plenty of will in the second half to overturn a decent lead. As for ourselves, it's early February, we are blooding new talent in the best way possible, hard lessons in hard games. Roll on the next game v Monaghan.

The unpalatable reality is that this game could and should have been wrapped up in the first half before the inevitable second half fade out.
I counted about four realistic goal chances which were squandered when we had Mayo on the meat slicer. Adrian Spillane hit the crossbar, David Moran missed a penalty, BJK palmed one over the bar from a Jack Barry cross when it was as easy to palm it in and the impressive Jack Barry shot venomously over the bar when it could have been under. Indeed, there may have been other goal chances which I cannot now recall. Yes, Kerry would not have been flattered by say a ten point lead at the break , such was their dominance. Mayo were kept hanging on by a very charitable referee. Their last free before half time was a case in point. The Mayo player jumped into the tackle and when he got free of that he decided he would deal with the following tsckle in the same way. It was clearly a free out but to the referee it was a clearly a free in!
Without the services of JO'D , Paul Geaney and Killian, the latter two for most of the half, that first half was pleasing. We were tight at the back with the only disquieting features being careless kicks out from Brian and the problems the crafty Andy Moran was causing Mark Griffin, the latter a headache that continued all through which management choose to ignore. Jack Barry was rampant at midfield, understandably being new to the panel was not as effective in the second half. Up front, the forwards worked hard and moved well , without ever achieving the deserved rewards on the scoreboard. Still, at one stage late in the half they were six up.
I said that Kerry would not have been flattered by an approximate lead of ten at half time but of course, knowing their history of second half eclipses, that may not have been enough. We faded against Cork and Limerick in the Mcgrath cup and Donegal in the NFL. Of course , these disappearing acts are not just a 2017 phenomenon. I do not know the reason. In any case, we were demolished in that second half. Kerry could not match Mayo's fanatical work rate and could not cope with their relentless physical approach, albeit some of it not within the rule book. As that half progressed it became apparent that only a miracle would enable us to stay afloat. Miracles are rare. Andy Moran, has been a great player in spite of what some people here suggest, continued to torment us and fittingly it was he who orchestrated Mayo's triumph. He did it from sunrise to sunset. Why in the name of goodness was there no move made to curtail him? Perhaps, a direct switch between Mark and Peter Crowley?
After the Donegal match I expressed unhappiness with Brian Kelly's kicking out of the ball. I saw nothing last night from Brian to lift my gloom. I accept that the outfield players do not always make it easy for him but in that situation, if you are not happy, then belt it as far away from your goal as possible and let them contest it out there. What you don't do is throw your hands in the air and kick it about thirty five metres for a contest that near your goal. Elementary.
Also after the Donegal match I alluded to some careless kicking from David Moran. I am afraid we saw some more careless play from David last night in spite of some hard work as well. Above all, keep this honest man away from place kicking. Come back soon Bryan, some of your critics here may appreciate you now.
Another aspect of the game in the second half was the experience of some of Mayo's old hands as against the naivety of some of our new boys. This was a major factor in the game. Now, this of course is not a criticism of those lads because only time gives you that know how , laden with a degree of cynicism. That is why, after the Donegal match, I lamented the absence of a dog like Darragh or KD. You need a couple of dogs and the hope is that some of our new, very promising players will add a canine quality to their array of skills.
Patsy O'Connell on Terrace Talk often makes reference to some players on the panel whose development has not evolved in spite of being given several chances and who should be dispensed with and make way for other guys. I don't think he has ever named names. He may do so tomorrow night. I have a couple in mind and I will watch with interest how long more management will persist with them. I feel they should be encouraged to get off the pot at this stage.

Whilst frustrations and lack of inaction on line and a number of other player performance issues clearly concerning from last night, including high free count given, frees missed, scores missed, bad matchups persisted with, big lead lost, poor passing...that is really a slew of failings. Somehow we did enough in first half to dismantle Mayo and stick a 6 point lead on them, with other chances missed and critically key players missing from forwards. Very little positives reflected in any of the posts I've read, but a pile of 'not good enough. Clearly a game of two halves, and with all the holes, still only lost by two points. There is surely a bit more positive balance to struck on review?
Can't understand the lack of inaction on the line however. Persistence to see if players struggling could turn the tide? A stretch. With Griffin that's a hard case to make, he's been around a while now. A lot of big players for us, even based on current availability were lost through injury that am convinced would have made that game won last night, namely James, Paul G, Killian an Shane.
Lost last two games last year with poison performances, especially Roscommon but made league final.
Lots of correction and improvement required in all areas of the team but we're far from at the despair precipice.
Deep breaths.

Unfair on Griffin to have kept him on Andy Moran all night. Not like Fitz to go for such a clearly unsuitable match-up; big man like Mark against a small, crafty opponent who plays it down low. Surely anyone could see that?
Very encouraging performances from the two Jacks last night. Savage's early point with the double dummy was a thing of beauty.
Hopefully the injuries to JOD, Geaney and Killian aren't too serious. We really have been cursed on that front over the past few years.
Great crowd for a February game. Stand was full 30 minutes before throw-in. Fair play to the large Mayo contingent who travelled.

Andy Moran sparks brilliant Mayo recovery in Tralee
Kerry 1-10 Mayo 0-15
Andy Moran ignited a stunning Mayo comeback in the second half at Austin Stack Park as Kerry coughed up a four-point half-time lead to lose by two.
A goal from Barry John Keane had Kerry in total control at the interval, but the Kingdom only managed to kick three points after the break, while Mayo took over in all areas of the field.
Both sides ended the game with 14 men as Tom Parsons was sent off in injury-time, while two blacks cards caught up with Kerry, who had introduced all of their substitutes.
There is no doubt that Kerry should have been much further ahead at the break than the 1-07 to 0-06 lead they accumulated from a dominant opening 35 minutes.
From midfield Jack Barry was an unstoppable force and his driving run saw Kerry open the scoring after just 12 seconds, while Jack Savage at corner-forward and David Moran also ruled the roost over their respective markers.
If Kerry were as ruthless as they have shown in the past, they could have hit six goals in the first half.
Barry twice pointed when a goal chance was available; Adrian Spillane rattled the crossbar six minutes into his first league start for the Kingdom; Barry John Keane palmed the ball over the bar from close range in the 21st minute; and Moran saw his harshly awarded 13th-minute penalty well saved by David Clarke.
That failure to kill off Mayo meant Cillian O’Connor and Moran could chip away at the deficit, but Mayo too could say they were sloppy up front, as along with their two wides, O’Connor dropped two medium range frees into Brian Kelly’s hands.
Mayo’s effort and work-rate definitely improved after the penalty save – David Drake was penalised for a jersey pull on Spillane – but other than efforts from Parsons and Moran, Mayo struggled in front of goal.
A hamstring injury for James O’Donoghue meant he was replaced by Conor Keane before the throw-in, but injury struck twice for Kerry as both Killian Young and Paul Geaney also limped off early on with leg muscle injuries.
Barry John Keane was one of the substitutes introduced and he finally broke Kerry’s goal drought five minutes from the break. A quick free from Savage found Moran, but his point attempt dropped short. Clarke then failed to get the required punch on the ball and the onrushing Barry John Keane rattled the net from close range.
That goal put Kerry 1-07 to 0-04 ahead, but a couple of O’Connor frees – either side of one that dropped short – meant Mayo only trailed by four at half-time.
The improvement from Mayo after the restart was remarkable though. A point from Conor O’Shea was added to by Cillian O’Connor to halve the deficit by the 38th minute, and after a Barry John Keane point, Mayo went on to score three of the next four to level matters by the 51st minute, 1-08 to 0-11.
While it was far from a game plagued with dirty play, referee Padraig Hughes dished out a red card, 11 yellow cards and a three blacks – to Evan Regan and Kerry’s Jonathan Lyne and Barry O’Sullivan – but the frequent fouling from the Kerry defenders was regularly penalised by Cillian O’Connor.
Substitute Conor Geaney did give Kerry the lead with a good point on the turn after 58 minutes, but from there to the end it was Mayo that dominated. Ten minutes from time Cillian O’Connor’s eighth free levelled the game, and five minutes from time Moran fired Mayo into the lead for the first time, while Cillian O’Connor finished off the job in injury-time.
An ugly mass brawl in the fifth minute of injury-time saw Parsons singled out and Hughes flashed a straight red chard his way – he was also booked earlier – but the two points from Tralee will please Mayo hugely.
NEXT UP: Mayo host neigbours Roscommon under lights at McHale Park on Saturday 25 February. The following afternoon sees Kerry welcome Monaghan to Fitzgerald Stadium for a 2pm throw-in.
Mayo: D Clarke; P Durcan, K Higgins, D Newcombe; S Coen, C Boyle, D Drake; D Vaughan, T Parsons (0-01); F Boland, C O’Connor (c) (0-09, 0-09f), C O’Shea (0-01); K McLoughlin (0-01), A Moran (0-03), J Doherty.

Look at the final league table in the last 5 years. 10 points gets you into the top 2. So we can lose again and still make the top 2, as long as we win 4 of our last 5 games.
What's worrying is what sort of panel we'll have to pick from for our remaining games. The u21 lads will be off, and we don't know long Geaney and O'Donoghue will be out for. Barry John Keane did well last night but if he's our main man up top for our next few games then we'll be doing well to scrape past Monaghan and Roscommon but we need the both Geaney and O'Donoghue for Dublin. And obviously our discipline will have to improve.

Not that they were all bad calls but some were awfully soft and even-handed Mr Hughes most certainly wasn't. In particular, there were several instances of Kerry backs being fouled in possession, only to be whistled for overcarrying. At the end of the day, frees were the decisive factor in this game; they kept Mayo in it first-half, and won it in the second. spot on regarding the 1st half goal chances. created loadsa chances but were not clinical enough when the chances came. 1 of them goal chances missed had been converted and we would have won. The clinical finishers like Geaney, JOD, Cooper were not around to put them away. I wouldnt be as despondent as others here. Mayo are a fine team , we fell a bit short and players like Jack Barry, Jack Savage are showing well with the like of Sullivan, Foley learning their trade. I d like to see Adrian Spillane get another run.

Worth remembering that Kerry had 4 players starting their first league game last night
Ronan Shanahan Conor Keane Jack Barry Adrian Spillane
You had 2 more in the first 15 who were starting their 2nd league game Jack Savage Tadgh Morley.
It's not like these lads (bar Morley) have even been getting sub minutes either - 3 of the 4 new starters hadn't even appeared as subs previously.
Then the subs that came on were
Barry John Keane Tom O’Sullivan Conor Geaney Michael Geaney Jason Foley Barry O’Sullivan
It was Tom O'Sullivan's 3rd appearance in a senior game for Kerry, Conor Geaney's 2nd appearance, Jason Foley 2nd appearance and Barry O'Sullivan's 3rd appearance.
That was 10 lads who would be in the novice category out of the 21 used. When you have that amount of inexperience in a team, it's no surprise that the performance levels will fluctuate.
The remaining 11 players were
Brian Kelly Mark Griffin Killian Young Jonathan Lyne Peter Crowley David Moran Paul Murphy Donnchadh Walsh Paul Geaney Barry John Keane Michael Geaney
2 of these were lost to injury - Geaney and Young. Some of the remainder probably strengthened their place in the squad while others probably weakened it.
It was an annoying one to lose especially with the first half-dominance but it had all the hallmarks of an early league performance with a lot of new lads in the team.

Mayo were short a few too They were short a few but I believe that they only had 1 lad playing his first league game - Eoin O'Donoghue who came on as a sub. Overall they had a couple more in the novice category - Newcombe, Boland, among the starters and Nally and Plunkett among the subs but there wasn't as much inexperience in their 21 against Kerry's. The list of Kerry players missing last night was Anthony Maher Stephen O'Brien Shane Enright James O’Donoghue Colm Cooper Johnny Buckley Fionn Fitzgerald Darran O’Sullivan Bryan Sheehan Kieran Donaghy

A common theme on here now seems to be over-reactions to wins and equally over-reactions to defeat. Careful or we will end up like Mayo supporters!
I'd be a little concerned over a few things I saw yesterday - both in relation to the Crokes game, admittedly I only saw on TV and what I saw in Tralee last night.
In the Crokes game I was disappointed with Shane Murphys kickouts. Kickouts are Kealy and Kellys weak points. Against decent opposition yesterday, I thought Murphy struggled in this aspect of the game.
My main gripe with Kerry yesterday - and it was evident in Donegal also - is the inability to score goals when the opportunity arises. In Donegal I felt the option of taking a point when the goal was on was taken too many times. Killer instinct lacking a bit. Last night there were at least 4 goal opportunities squandered in the first half. Granted the most natural goal finishers on the panel - Gooch, James O, Geaney and Darran - were missing.
Mark Griffin's struggles with Andy Moran are well documented here and it was surprising that somebody else wasnt tried on him. I know he played in Donegal last Sunday and Sigerson on Wednesday but I'm sure marking Andy Moran would have been an excellent learning curve for Jason Foley.

I agree Griffin should have been switched off Moran, but I think there would have been a risk of Foley being taken to the cleaners - not good for a young rookie's confidence. Peter Crowley might have been my choice to try swapping with Mark.

Enough with the "it's just February" nonsense, that excuse seems to have found a home in our vocabulary in recent times. There are players on this squad who have been tried and tried again and again, they are simply not good enough! Of the more recent old guard... Brian Kelly, Mark Griffin, John Lyne, Mike Geaney, Barry John Keane, all not good enough! End of story. Of the so called newer guard... Conor Keane, (Legions version of Kieran O' Leary, not good enough for this level) Adrian Spillane, (at best not ready yet) At this point, I would take the very best of the U21's (the recent additions and ones brought in this year, have been great) and the very best of our seniors and that's the only panel that wins an All-Ireland, lack of goals in 2015, lack of goals in 2016, 2 games into 2017 and you feel kerry players would fist the ball over the bar with an empty net staring at them in the face, not good enough. Winning this game would have been a statement, and they bottled it. Fitzmaurice, my opinion, not good enough yet, he has the potential, but he's lacking, and it shows in his teams performance. There are no excuses for losing this game, losing O' Donoghue before the game, Geaney and Young early on, no excuse. And what to make of O' Donoghue, you cannot build a winning team around players who are more absent than present. Correct in everything you have said. BJK is now 27? And he still hasn't made it? Why persistent? It's the same across the board for several players. JOD, we would be better off planning without him, one good season really. When we are talking about missing players like killian young as having an affect on team things must be very bad! Anyway not many people here will agree with you or me. Most still think now average players still have a place in the kerry squad going on past achievements. We are lucky that the standard of football across the country is so bad or else we wouldn't be making it past 1/4 finals!
