great memories of an immensely talented player. End of an era. I think we all knew it was pretty inevitable with the scenes after the semi. Marc walking barefoot around the hallowed turf of Croke Park with his tiny baby boy in his arms. Watching him seemed like a "Goodbye".

Marc Ó Sé announces his retirement from Intercounty Football Stalwart Kerry defender and 5 time All Ireland winner Marc Ó Sé has announced his retirement from intercounty football following a career in the green and gold that stretches all the way back to 1998. Ó Sé was a firm favourite with the Kingdom supporters and in typical Ó Sé tradition he was seen at his best when the chips were down rallying his teammates with some sterling defensive plays and very often choosing the opportune time to pop up for a morale boosting point.
The Gaeltacht club man, who made his championship debut in 2002 against Limerick, won every honour in the game and shares a record 88 Championship appearances for his county with his older brother Tomás. Between Championship and League he played a startling 176 times for his beloved Kingdom and was named both GAA Player of the Year and Texaco Player of the Year in 2007.
Statement by Marc Ó Sé A chairde, Today, I announce my retirement from the Kerry Senior Football Team. It has been 16 years since I first became a member of the Kerry Senior Panel and now I feel it is the right time for me, my family and Kerry to hang up my boots.
I wish to thank my family for all their support throughout my career with Kerry.
I would like to thank the Kerry County Board for all their support down through the years. I would also like to thank all the selectors, trainers, doctors, physio's, backroom staff and of course the players whom I have been lucky to serve with during my career.
I wish to thank Jack O'Connor, Pat O'Shea and of course Eamonn Fitzmaurice for all their guidance and support during my years wearing the green and gold. I would also like to pay special tribute to my late uncle Páidí who guided me through my first two seasons with Kerry, particularly when there were question marks still hanging over me, but he continued to believe in me and while Paidí was no longer Kerry manager from 2003 onwards he remained a huge influence and a constant mentor throughout my career.
I wish to thank the Kerry supporters for all their support down through the years.
Buíochas faoi leith le Cumann Caide na Gaeltachta. Ní bheinn ag imirt le Ciarraí ach don club iontach, speisialta seo. Liam Ó Rocháin agus go háirithe Michéal Ó Sé a bhí mar bhainisteoirí agus mé ag fás aníos. Bhí tionchar an dearfach ar fad ag Micheál orm agus do chreid sé ionam i gcónaí.
I wish to thank the GPA for all their help and advice down through the years. If you told me as a child that I would go on and win All Ireland's with my heroes I would have said I was dreaming so to be able to do that has been one of the greatest thrills of my life. To play alongside some of the greatest players to ever play the game is something I will always cherish.
I will continue to play football with my club An Ghaeltacht who have recently gained promotion to Division 1 of the County League and I look forward to playing with some exceptional young footballers in our great club.
I wish the Kerry team all the best in the years ahead and I have no doubt that they will recapture Sam in the not too distant future. Of course I will miss playing with Kerry, miss the craic and friendships with the lads and most of all miss those big days out in Croke Park but now I look forward to my future with my partner and my young family. After 16 years it is time. Cíarraí go deo, Beir Bua, Marc Ó Sé
Kerry Manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice paid Marc the following tribute “On behalf of the Kerry management and players I would like to congratulate Marc Ó Sé on his retirement. He has been an outstanding servant for the Green and Gold with a senior inter county career that stretches over fifteen years. He has played under four different managers and won five All Ireland medals and numerous individual awards in a stellar career. This remarkable longevity is a tribute to his professionalism and determination to do the necessary to keep himself at the top of the game. I had the honour of both playing and managing Marc. He was an outstanding team mate and a pleasure to manage. He for many years was the back that got to mark the opposition’s number one danger man. More often than not we could take that as mission accomplished. As well as being an outstanding man marker he also possessed a rare natural football ability. He was a footballing defender and was an attacking corner back long before it was en vogue, kicking scores from the no 2 position as far back as the All Ireland quarter final against Armagh in 2006. He also had a huge presence in the dressing room which was of particular significance in the last few years. He led by example and helped to drive a culture of excellence within the setup. Be it excelling in the football sessions, winning runs, driving gym sessions or speaking in meetings Marc was to the forefront of everything we did. Many of our younger players learned a huge amount from him as he displayed to them what it takes to be a Kerry footballer and the responsibilities that go with that. The respect within the group for him is absolute. While he is taking a well deserved sabbatical from Kerry at the moment I can see him back in a management capacity in the near future. Gaiscíoch i ngeansaí Chiarraí ab ea Marc. Go néirí go geal leis amach anseo.
County Committee Chairman, Patrick O’Sullivan, was fulsome in his praise for Ó Sé “To say that Marc Ó Sé will be a huge loss to the Kerry Senior Football team is an understatement. From his hugely impressive senior championship debut in 2002 and in the years that followed he continued to make a massive contribution in the Kerry defence in the position which he made his own for so many years, a position which will be very difficult to fill. Marc’s retirement ends the unbroken involvement of the Ó Se family with the Kerry Senior Football team beginning with his uncle Páidí at Minor level in 1971. Marc’s honours in the game including 5 Senior All-Irelands, GAA Player of the Year and Texaco Player of the Year in 2007, 3 All Star Awards and his achievements with his club, An Ghaeltacht are a proud record of commitment to Kerry and to his club. Growing up in Árd a’ Bhothair Marc along with Feargal, Darragh and Tomás were submerged in the football tradition and with their uncle Páidí as their mentor and later Liam Ó Rócháin we should not have been surprised that the Ó Sé family would continue to have a strong influence on the Kerry teams and go on to be long serving inter county players who would achieve the highest honours that an inter county playing career can offer. The number of years he spent playing with Kerry, started at minor where he excelled. It was not long before he established himself in the senior and Under 21 teams. I thank Marc for all the joy and entertainment he gave us down through his years as a player. He has retired from the inter county scene in the full knowledge of the vast contribution he made to Kerry GAA and Kerry people throughout the world will be sad today when they hear of his retirement When one reads the account of his honours and achievements with Kerry and with his club An Ghaeltacht we realise the extent of his unquestioned ability, character and talent as player and the leadership he has given to his fellow team members on numerous occasions. Marc’s playing career is laden with examples of leadership on and off the field. He always led by example knowing that if you expect your team to work hard, you’re going to need to lead by example. Most importantly his sportsmanship and discipline has always been of the very highest standard. . He has given us great memories. On behalf of all Kerry followers I wish Marc and his family every good wish for the future”.
Statement by former Kerry Manager Jack O’Connor It's often said of Marc Ó Sé that he was too good of a footballer to be a corner back and there is merit in that. He began life with me in the number 7 shirt in the 2004 All Ireland Final on the opposite wing to his brother Tomás. He kicked the opening point in that final with the outside of his right into the Canal end after less than a minute. Within 15 mins he was back to number 2 after we had conceded a goal and that's where he stayed for most of his career. That summed it up in a nutshell. He was a real footballing corner back. That was by no means the last point he kicked from corner back. In the 2006 quarter final against Armagh he kicked 2 great points in the second half, one with each foot. His real strength as a defender was his anticipation and agility. He often played from the front but had the agility to get back if it went over the top. Marc could defend man on man in an era when blanket defences didn't exist. Nowadays the inside line is rarely exposed and have plenty cover. I was a member of a selection committee that picked the best team of the last 30 years and there wasn't much argument when it came to picking the number 2. The contribution that Marc and the Ó Sé family have made to Kerry football has been incalculable. Ni bheidh a leithéid ann arís. Jack O’Connor

His dummy point against Armagh in 06. Genius. Two unreal points that day. And the one below in the Park that brought the game to extra-time - one of the greatest celebrations of a Kerry point ever where we were. The dummy (showing the ball wide with his right hand and then dropping the shoulder the other way), the dummy solo, the brilliant kick passing. An expert in full back line play. Great reader of the game. You run out of superlatives. I'd have loved to have seen a few more of the battles he had at training with Gooch. I think I had this in the Intermediate Championship thread but one sequence of play in the 2nd half that day summed Marc up. A 60/40 ball in favour of Killian Spillane, Marc gets a hand and knocked in out on front of himself, flicks the ball up and delivers a long kick pass. I heard a story of a young fella who recently joined the panel and was amazed with how Marc was still one of the fastest in sprints, long runs and so on. Showing how it should be done. Hope he gets a few years yet with An Ghaeltacht, he could be annoying Kerry forwards for a few more years to come.

An absolute Rolls Royce of a footballer. I always felt we would have seen the best of him in the half back line where he would have had more freedom because I regarded him as the best of the Ó Sés on talent and skill alone. However, we were always stuck for players in the full back line where he settled and showed his ability to mark the top forwards in the country out of the game.
I hope he gets involved in media work because you can tell by his intelligence as a footballer I think he would give a fantastic insight. I'm glad Brian Ó Beaglaioch got the opportunity to share a dressing room with him, I'm sure there was a certain amount of mentoring between him and Marc that will stick with him.

unlikely to see his likes for a long time if ever again. The Kerry team of my youth is almost no more. Mahoney and Gooch the only ones left now. Hard to believe he's been around since 2002, seems like only 3/4 years ago he was starting out

What can you. Fantastic player. Great Defender. Up there with Tomas and Seamus Moynihan Mike McCarthy and Tom Sullivan as one of the Kerry greats of the modern era. I will never forget the block he made on Donnacha O'Connor in the 2009 All Ireland final. The second half Cork were attacking down a Point. Donnacha O'Connor got the ball close to goal on the Hill 16 side. If he kicked a point then Cork would have drawn the game with about 10 minutes left. He went for it but Marc threw himself at his foot and made a tremendous block. Kerry got possession went down the field and I think Tommy Walsh kicked a point. A two point swing for Kerry. I think that moment won the game for Kerry. Cork didn't score again after that and Kerry won by 4 points. One of many memories I have of him.

This shouldn't be in the past tense... I'm sure Brian is fine when it comes to playing for the Gaeltacht. When making the step up to the green and gold, having Marc in the Kerry dressing room I'm sure was a huge help to Brian when it comes to making the transition.

I will always remember him diving on the boot of the monaghan attacker in the 2006 semifinal with the game on a knife edge. He was peerless in his prime at the art of defending and he didn't do anything mean or nasty in the process either.

Every one of these retirements feels like a funeral. I'm going to need to take a day off to drink a few slow pints when the Gooch eventually packs it in. Marc was at his absolute peak from 06-11 and dominated every forward playing the game.

People are a bit shocked, we felt it might be coming, but when it happens it is different, he was an institution. Even the sign off was complete, Éamonn gave a great account and as did Marc himself, gaeilge go deas, everything has been said, slán agus go raibh mile maith agat for an ceoil agus an inspiration for mo filíochta.

That 2006 quarter Final was really a day when all 3 O'Ses drove hard for the Kerry cause. I'd love to see that match in full again.
The 2010 point against Cork was majestic. I rarely enjoyed a win over Cork as much as that one. It was the highlight an otherwise disappoint year.
Over 2 decades of continuous service to Kerry from that one house. Huge commitment and sacrifice. So many memories....

There's a litany of great memories from Marc. One not mentioned here is a solo run the length of the field in 09 against Cork to win a penalty. The amount of dummies he sold on the way up was ridiculous

Every decade or so, a player emerges who represents a seismic shift in the skills of the game, including defending. I always regarded Mark as ‘the man who walked on his heels’; a sort of rotation that would have puzzled even the great Dr Schools. But by God he could play football. His reliable reassuring presence his honesty, fight, determination, and above all, his ‘class’, pure ‘class’ was always evident in any and all situations. A delightful ballplayer, a man so clean in mind and method as to be a model for all young men who play football. The youngest of the boys as Ard a’ Bóthair and unfortunately that last of a special clutch. Undeniably, one of the greatest defenders of his generation.

Hard to know what else to say but in a way it's good to see a truly great player leaving the field at a time of his choosing with his legacy more than secured. So many great memories already noted not least his managing to keep the ball in play in the drawn semî in 14 leading to the final point. Thanks for everything and more Marc!

I have been watching Kerry corner backs for the guts of sixty years. During that time it was my good fortune to witness the likes of Donnie O'Sullivan, Seamis MacGearailt, Seamus Murphy, Mick Morris, Jimmy Deenihan, Paudie Lynch, Paidi O'Se , Tom O'Sullivan, What a glittering gallery of defenders. But that list does not include numero uno. I give that accolade to Marc.
I regard him as sensational. Not just as an exemplar of watertight corner back play but also because he effortlessly executed that role with balletic elegance No. brutish or cynical carry on here. Rather sleight of hand and dancing feet.
It is tear jerking to think that we will not see that generation of O'Ses ever again wearing that old jersey. The contriibution they have made is incalculable and something on which a value cannot be placed. Their contribution can only valued in the memory bank , a treasure to be mined in dark, dreary winter evenings. Reference has been to some of Marc's most awesome moments, and awesome for once is the appropriate word, Aptly, people have recalled the second half against Armagh in 2006 . Have we ever seen three brothers acting in concert taking a game by the scruff of the neck to such a pitch. Recalling it gives me goose pimples. It was as if they decided in unison " we own this field" Own they did that day and many a day before and after.
And so , it is goodbye Marc. I have seen none better and few as good.

What else to say about Marc that has not been said already ? He was the complete footballer , an oasis of calm competent responsibility in the Kerry full back line. He never caused us a moments concern . He was always dependable. He wore the green and gold with passion and pride - he was Kerry. My memory of Marc was how he didn't give Jason Sherlock a ball in the 2007 semi final. He was a rock. Thanks for the memories Marc . You will never understand how much you mean to and are appreciated by Kerry fans everywhere.

An absolute gem of a player.
It has all been said about Marc..Notwithstanding that epic performance v Armagh my twopence worth was his reaction to being dropped V Mayo in 2014..When he came on in his performance was pure defiance..In fact he was instrumental in that second period of extra time..I stand corrected but I believe he was the last man to off load to each of Kerry's 3 point scorers to win it.

Marc also reinvented the inside back role with his scoring forays and off both feet.
Class joke that Paidí told him that you weren't a footballer if you could count your medals on one hand, and sure didn't he only haul a handful!
NO QUESTION MARC Only a handful, what a shame, So embarrassing, such a claim! Lowering the tone, of the O'Sés. No Question Marc, king of the game.

Cork had thrown in the big first Cussen (Michael), a hail Mary goes into the Kerry square, a goal now and there would be time for another play. Cheeks clenched, teeth gritted, the supporters watched in anxiety, but need not have feared, Marc steamed in underneath the ball, fetched ut up and came sprinting out speed soloing in what could only be O'Se fashion toward the side line. All Ireland won. Class, from a class act. The most comfortable on the ball defender I've seen. From a defensive perspective I remember his two 360 spins to keep Andy Moran outside him in 2011 semi after two fine dummies from Moran. The site of Marc tearing up the wing soloing, like Tomas too are two of the most prominent reflections I'll have of both men. Thanks Marc for the skill, committment, character, belief, pride, entertainment and joy you brought to the Kerry team and supporters. The best of everything to you and family going forward.

Massive outpouring of emotional gratitude for Mark and its reassuring that people appreciate corner backs as well as corner forwards I can t help thinking that Mark deserved to go out with a better finale I feel he should have come on instead of Begley in the AI I think he would not have been pushed around like young Begley was and he would have been stronger on the ball. Another regret Is that he had so much football I wished we had tried him further up the field at least on some occasions now we will Never know .His kick passing while not breaking stride should be on all training and coaching videos and of course the late late play he made against mayo in limerick will never be forgotten. Thanks Champ Pure Class

There was always a comforting reassurance when you clicked on to the team sheet and saw Marc 2, Tomas 5 and Darragh 8.
Not convinced that Marc was treated properly after this years league final. Hard to believe he couldn't still play the Cian O'Sullivan role for Kerry.
One of the greats of Kerry football and a legacy that is immortal is assured amongst his own people in Kerry. There is no bigger reward, prize or greater privilege.

Could not agree more regarding his role in this year's championship- had the footballl nous plus the pace to play the sweeper role- a lost opportunity! Many favourite memories but PUC equaliser stands out in 2010 plus his goal in ASP vs Armagh in league game '03- superb run & finish.
