Mark O'Connor has been named as part of Geelong's 7 man leadership group for the season. A fantastic achievement which shows how far his progression over there has gone.

After another excellent season Mark O'Connor and Zach Tuohy start AFL Finals action today as 4th place Geelong go to Adelaide to play 1st place Port Adelaide.
Live on BT Sport, starting at 10.40am Irish time this morning. Winner goes directly in to last 4, loser goes in to what effectively would be a quarter final next week against one of the winners of the games between the 5th to 8th place teams. First round of fixtures below...

Just read our Tadhgeen claim he got Oz boyos to try to buy off GAA by offering 'em money for him when he jumped ship - if they fell for it he said it would be like the 'transfer fee they pay to other codes' - the dam would really have burst, mind you it burst anyway and nobody can deny that it cost us a good few Sams.
Looks Tadhgeen himself is now a 'commission only recruitment agent' so he will have to deliver to put bread on the table and that can only mean one thing - more hunger for bods aboard abroad, abandoning the GAA - he is now even talking of taking the women!
Can't see travel issues - as players are less busy more will have a go, and once they get an offer of money ... hells bells!
I previously queried if Tadhg can still use GAA grounds for his 'interviews' and I don't recall the response - he did use UCD/Belfield at one stage if my memory serves me right.
Maybe my townie friends will give us an update, that is if they got over defeat to my Ballydonoghoors!

Hopefully Covid will hit those AFL clubs in the pocket hard. Even as a Cork man I'd cry if thy got their hands on a talent like David Clifford.
Good to see a few lads in their prime turning their backs on the AFL - Conor Glass and Conor McKenna returning home as well as McShane deciding not to go. Fair dues to Tyrone for making it more attractive for him to stay.
People say it's only a handful going over but AFL cherry picking has impacted the destination of a number of All Ireland's. That is pretty serious in my book.

Geelong's hopes of winning a first title since 2011 suffered a big setback last week with a poor performance and disappointing defeat away to Port Adelaide.
They now relocate to Brisbane for the remainder of the campaign, and it's all knock out stuff from now on.
Geelong take on old rivals Collingwood on Saturday morning, so Mark and his colleagues at the back will have to contend with Mason Cox the giant American who dominated the West Coast Eagles last time out with some spectacular marks and surprisingly accurate goalkicking for a Texan. Remaining fixtures listed below.
Friday, October 9th: Richmond 80 St Kilda 49 - played at Metricon Stadium, Gold Coast Saturday, October 10th: Geelong 100 Collingwood 32 - played at the Gabba, Brisbane
Friday, October 16th: Port Adelaide 40 Richmond 46 - played at Adelaide Oval Saturday, October 17th: Brisbane Lions 42 Geelong 82 - played at The Gabba, Brisbane
Grand Final on Saturday, October 24th: Richmond v Geelong, 9.30am Irish time at The Gabba, Brisbane - LIVE ON BT SPORT 3

The game this Saturday is on BT Sport 3, starts at 9.40am Irish time.
Grand Final will be on one of the BT Sport channels as well. Should be a better viewing time for anyone in this side of the world for a change as i think it's going to be a Saturday night game local time in Brisbane, rather than the traditional afternoon slot at the MCG which always made for a pre-dawn rising time over here.

Very uplifting to see tuohy and o Conner play a pivotal part last night. O Conner is a powerhouse in prob the best defense in the league. There’s a strong chance o Conner could be at times marking dusty Martin next week. Hard to describe how mammoth a task this will be for him. Martin is like a cross between Connolly and gooch in their prime.

I think Tadhg Kennelly is the only Irish player ever to win a Premiership medal, so would be some going if 2 win it in the same year this time round. Mark and Zach Tuohy must have played as many minutes as anyone in the squad over the course of the season, amazingly consistent and durable the pair of them. Tuohy's kicking skills are a joy to watch. Mark might have a less prominent role in the team, but everything he's asked to do he does with such assurance. His coolness under pressure and vision when in tight spaces really are superb.
Richmond have beaten Geelong convincingly the last 2 times they've met, and should start as favourites to win it out for the 3rd time in 4 years. Geelong's excellent form of the last 2 weeks and their liking for the Brisbane venue might level the playing field a bit though, so all to play for.

There is this thing called Coronvirus that would mean its unlikely he would travel from Australia to Ireland for a holiday at the moment. And then there is the fact that he is a professional athlete and I doubt his employers would be happy to see him play in effect a professional sport in another country during his holidays. He played for Dingle while at home 2 or 3 years ago and when news got back to Collingwood about it they read him the riot act. He was water boy for the next game.

I'd say it's very likely that Mark will be travelling home after the Grand Final. I'd imagine there's a couple of months close season for the AFL that will give him enough time to travel home (assuming flights are available) isolate at home for a couple of weeks and spend Christmas with his family. Very unlikely however that he would be allowed to train or play with Kerry.

If, and that's still an if, he will be allowed to fly back to Ireland after the Grand Final he most certainly won't be allowed to play with Kerry. That is already a bit of a problem in a no- covid-world, but in the current climate unthinkable. He got a way with playing for Dingle as he was not a regular starter yet in the AFL, and few people in Australia would be following the progress of Dingle GAA. If he would get injured, or get coronavirus, wile in Ireland, and even more so if he would be training and playing another sport, he could ruin his career. Unfortunately for Kerry he has settled really well in the AFL and has become a very valuable player. He has a great career ahead of him as a professional sportsman. It would be very irresponsible to throw that career away for a few minutes playing with Kerry. Also keeping in mind he might not even make the team.

Mark O'connor is 4~5 years in Australia now, he has settled in well with Geelong and is highly regarded by the team manager and his team mates. Earlier this year Mark was unveiled as a member of the clubs leadership group, a group of 6 along with captain Joel Selwood, who are effectively vice captains. I wish Mark all the best in the grand final next weekend but we can't assume that he has absolutely any interest whatsoever in playing with Kerry. His life has completely moved on. We have a very strong and committed panel of footballers here in Kerry, this talk of parachuting in the southern hemisphere yank is bananas.

Agree with John here. He is gone.
I don't know is it so simple for someone working in Australia to leave and return at this time.

And in any case wouldn't it be some kick in the teeth to a fella who lost out to accomodate him. Seriously folks, can we give over with the pining for Mark O'Connor; it's embarrassing at this stage.

the lad is 23 years old. the last kerry man to win a grand final, wasnt complete until he won an all ireland medal with kerry.
why wouldnt it be any different here? majority of lads who go out there, come home and if their careers arent finished, they play with their counties again quite soon.

Kerry Gaa does not exist to "complete" grand final winners. If any former Kerry minor makes the breakthrough to play senior, brilliant, until then he's just another kerry immigrant in Australia

We had a Covid expert on the forum lately. A psychology expert could come in handy to analyse a few of the comments on this thread.

Your previous post speculated about him just joining the Kerry setup during the AFL off-season - this is what people have been replying to. A player coming home to stay is a different story altogether; no issues in that case.
