GROUP A Rochestown Colaiste na Scelige Tralee CBS Colaiste Choilm, Ballincollig
GROUP B
Clonakilty High School, Clonmel Mercy Mounthawk Colaiste Chriost Ri
GROUP C IS Killorglin De La Salle, Macroom Hamilton High School, Bandon St Brendan's
GROUP D
Skibbereen PCD Rathmore St Flannan's
Seven Kerry schools once again compete in the Corn Ui Mhuiri this year. The Sem are sure to be strong this year again as I presume they have a few of last year's team again this year and they won the under 16 1/2 Frewen Cup 2 years ago. The Green contested that final so will be hoping to improve on last year's disappointing showing and progress from their group. Elsewhere Rathmore should be strong and will look to build on last year's strong showing in reaching a 1/4 final. Off hand, I don't know much about our other schools but I'm sure PCD will be a well coached outfit and are always competitive but Group D is a tough group to call!
On the rest, Chriost Ri won last year's Frewen Cup defeating Flannan's so they are sure to be stronger than previous years and Flannan's have also been building well while Ballincollig reached last year's 1/4 final with a young team. This is Bandon's first year up so they are an unknown quantity. Not sure on the other schools but it is sure to be an interesting competition this year and surely more competitive than last year's!

Corn Ui Mhuiri Under 18 ½ A Football
Mercy Mounthawk 4-16 High School Clonmel 0-7
Report by Ed Donnelly (info.munster@gaa.ie)
Mercy Mounthawk from Tralee earned the first victory in the 2016/2017 Corn Ui Mhuiri competition by virtue of a comprehensive 21 point victory over last year’s finalists High School Clonmel. Played at Mallow GAA Complex on a dry, brisk afternoon, Mercy Mounthawk began strongly with a point from play in the opening minute from Bobby O’Regan. This was quickly followed by three further points before High School Clonmel got their opening score, a point from play by wing-back Manus McFadden in the 12th minute. The Mercy Mounthawk dominance was pronounced at this stage and corner-forward Rory O’Connor was denied by two excellent saves by Aidan Tobin in the High School Clonmel goal to keep the deficit at manageable levels. Mercy Mounthawk midfielder had his side’s third goal chance in the 23rd minute and while the Clonmel defence could do nothing on this occasion, his shot sailed just over the bar for the final point of the opening half, leaving the interval score at 0-8 to 0-3 in favour of the Kerry school.
Mercy Mounthawk were in no mood to let the Clonmel side back in to this game and rattled off the first four points of the second half before the first goal arrived, courtesy of wing-forward Michael Walsh in the 40th minute. From the resultant kickout, Mercy Mounthawk were again on the attack before the Clonmel defence fouled Rory O’Connor at the expense of a penalty which was expertly dispatched by Bobby O’Regan. With the score now reading 2-12 to 0-3, the game was well and truly over as a contest as both schools began to ring the changes.
The final quarter saw Mercy Mounthawk add two further goals from corner-back Padraig Mahony and full-forward Dara Devine and despite some late efforts by Clonmel to score a consolation goal, it wasn’t to be as the Tralee based school ran out 4-16 to 0-7 winners.
Mercy Mounthawk: Brian O’Regan; Padraig Mahony (1-0), Shane Walsh, Donagh McMahon; Colm Carmody, Sean Collins (0-1), Fergal Barry (0-1); Ciaran O’Reilly (0-1), Michael Linnane; Sean Griffin, Bobby O’Regan (1-3, 1-0 penalty, 0-1 free), Michael Walsh (1-0); Rory O’Connor, Dara Devine (1-6, 0-2 frees), Eoin McElligott (0-4) Subs: Diarmuid O’Connor for Carmody (45m), Richard O’Flaherty for O’Connor (52m), Eoin O’Malley for Linnane (52m), Rory Murphy for Devine (53m), Fiachra Ennis for Griffin (53m)
High School Clonmel: Aidan Tobin; Dean McMorrow, Oisin O’Dwyer, Shane Egan; Jamie Grant (0-2), Conor McGrath, Manus McFadden (0-1); Luke Fogarty, Ben Owens; Sean Martin, Shane O’Meara, Michael Farrow; Michael Murphy, Cian O’Sullivan (0-2 frees), Sean MArtin (0-1 free) Subs: Aaron Phelan for Farrow (35m), Conor Foley (0-1) for McElligott (42m), Keenan Bowe for McMahon (42m), Ian Foley for Murphy (52m), Jamie Roche for Fogarty (59m)
Referee: Kevin Walsh (Clare)

Wins for all the Kerry teams (bar those who lost to another Kerry team) ISK and Rathmore will need wins in the next round to keep hope alive ; ISK would be hoping for 2 more big wins by the Sem and Rathmore would be hoping for the same from Chorcha Dhuibhne. Mounthawk and Chriost Ri are in the same group so that should be an intriguing tie given both their winning margins. Group A could be very tight between CNS, The Green, Rochestown and Ballincollig. The Rochestown Ballincollig game was very tight throughout. Losing the first game puts CNS in a difficult position. Sem obviously looking a serious contender again this year as reigning champions. Also in case people didnt know admission to all these games is free.

That Dara Devine there from Na Gaeil is impressing me more and more. He's minor again next year. Wouldn't surprise me if he made the Kerry panel.

Some of the players St. Brendans have lost include Lee O Donoghue, Daniel O Brien, David Naughten, Evan Cronin and the crucial one is David Clifford who is now attending Tralee IT. Fair play to David Clifford for leaving and pursuing college at 17. With the footballing tradition in the Sem he must have been tempted to stay and go for another Corn Ui Mhuiri/Hogan Cup.
There is still a very formidable team there and I would be surprised if the didn't win Munster again. They would also have a realistic chance of the Hogan Cup again.

Clifford had achieved everything at schools level and had nothing left to achieve so I'm glad he is taking the step up again to College's level but it must be said, not only would be be underage this year, he would be underage for Corn Ui Mhuiri next year again so he is a big loss to the Sem. You still have a formidable outfit for the Sem if players such as Billy Courtney (would think he is overage though?), Niall Donohoe, Cian Gamell, Dara Moynihan, Chris O'Donghue, Michael Potts, David Shaw etc are still there but I don't know if they are. The Sem won the Frewen Cup against the Green on this age 2 years ago and lost the All Ireland final to Good Counsel of Wexford in a game that Clifford didn't start because of injury. The Green have made an impressive start and it looks like PCD could be strong again and have reached the O'Sullivan Cup final. Also take note of Mercy Mounthawk's impressive win against last year's finalist Clonmel. Looking good so far for the Kerry schools but a lot of football to be played yet

I was hoping David Clifford would have gone to UCC which is the prime academy for young, ambitious Kerry footballers.

Stephen Wallace is in charge of football in the IT in Tralee, so hopefully things will improve a bit there.

I don't think so unless they're cousins. Jordan is Aidans son who played with Crokes in the backs in the 80s. Evan is Nialls son who also played with Crokes. Evan was on the Crokes minor panel this year. He's under again next year.

The Sem beat Chorca Dhuibhne 1-16 to 2-12 in the O'Sullivan Cup final today. Was a right humdinger throughout.
The Sem and the Green play each other in the final of the Munster U15 competition after wins today. The Sem beat Chriost Ri by 8-19 to 2-5 (not a typo) and scored 7-18 against Chorca Dhuibhne in the previous round.

The Sem are not as strong as last year but they still have a good team.
Robert Osborne (Legion) in goals.
Chris O'Donoghue (Glenflesk) Cian Gammell (Legion) Niall O'Donoghue (Firies) and Cian O'Callaghan (Firies) are backs who were all on the Kerry minor panel this year Mark Fitzgerald (Crokes) is there too. Billy Courtney (Crokes) in Midfield. Dara Moynihan (Spa) and David Shaw (Crokes) Kerry minors from this year. Jack Griffin (Crokes) Ciaran Flynn (Firies) Donnacha O'Sullivan (Firies) Mark Hartnett (Crokes) Niall McCarthy (Spa) in the forwards.

One of the biggest challenges facing the 'Sem' this year is how to replace a quality player like David Clifford (Fossa) up front? David Shaw (Crokes) has a great presence and has been used at full forward this season but his absence as midfield partner to club-mate Billy Courtney could be the 'Sem's' downfall. Have they another strong target man for full forward?

They will end up starting Shaw at midfield and bring in Mark Hartnett from the crokes into the forwards. Niall McCarthy from Spa is another option. They have a good team and could win Munster just not as good as last year.

If they are planning on putting David Shaw (Crokes) back into the middle I think they should do it sooner rather than later. Their keeper Robert Osborne (Legion) is well able to ping a ball and if the 'Sem' can take control of the centre they'll be difficult to beat. I know they have a few lads to come back from injury, Michael Potts (Crokes) in my opinion being the most influential of those but I suspect they'll still be light upfront. Have they ever used Potts on the half forward line?

Wouldn't surprise me to see Potts playing midfield with Billy Courtney and releasing Shaw to the top of the square then. Potts has an engine like a Ferrari.
