Kerry GAA streamed the match on facebook, nice work. David Moran was motoring very well. Hope JOD's injury isn't serious.

Well done and team was pitched perfect, just scraped it so will have done chasing pack the maximum good, Éamonn & Co will now be busy cajoling and driving 'em forward them so they make the step up. And Radio Kerry line cut at the conclusion of play.

Poor performance too much handpassing, no creativity in the half forward line, inside line coming too deep, half forward line too deep offered nothing, fitzmaurice picking too many defense minded players, too many similar players picked in half forward line. No game plan or ideas, Kerry made limerick look good. Foley did well in defense, Tom o Sullivan good In possession, Moran good in midfield, James o Donoghue up front, only subs that offered something off the bench were Conor geaney made good runs inside. Mikey geaney and Jonathan lyne are not coumty standard players lyne definatly isn't s back, they work hard but don't have enough quality, they hand pass too much and are unable to hit the inside men with quality ball.

radio kerry covereage is poor. missing most of the extra time and they dont even tell us what the current 15 is. no idea who is on the pitch now. It's hopeless!! I've said this on here & further afield many times. We get told over & over again that Eamon is bringing on so & so because he needs to get a look at these guys before the league blah blah blah ..... for Jesus sake we know why he's bringing them on,it's not rocket science but is there any chance you'd tell us what's happening on the pitch which is the reason we tuned in. The waffle that they go on with is hard to listen to at times. RK need to get a decent commentator who commentates 90% of the action on the field & 10% about someone's mothers sisters brother in law in the bronx that 99% of us have no interest in🙄🙄

The over 21s

A fair few over 21s who weren't part of the championship panel last year got at the least a run out. How much of an influence this will have in terms of squad selection as things get more serious remains to be seen.
The following are those who got game time last year for Kerry in the league or championship who didn't feature in the McGrath cup this year.
1 Aidan O'Mahony Rathmore 2 Aidan Walsh St Marys 3 Alan Fitzgerald Castlegregory 4 Anthony Maher Duagh 5 Bryan Sheehan St Marys 6 Colm Cooper Dr Crokes 7 Conor Cox Listowel Emmets 8 Darran OSullivanGlenbeigh-Glencar 9 Fionn FitzgeraldDr Crokes 10 Gavin O’Grady Glenbeigh-Glencar 11 Johnny Buckley Dr Crokes 12 Kieran Donaghy Austin Stacks 13 Pa Kilkenny Glenbeigh/Glencar 14 Philip O’Connor Cordal 15 Stephen O’Brien Kenmare 16 Tony Brosnan Dr Crokes
This 16 doesn't include Marc O'Se - retired or Podge Connor from Legion who has emmigrated.
The following 4 are those who didn't feature last year in the league or championship or in this year's McGrath Cup but who have been confirmed to be involved with the squad to some extent in the press releases issued by the county board.
Gavin White Dr Crokes Killian SpillaneTemplenoe Michéal Burns Dr Crokes Shane Murphy Dr Crokes
There's a fair chunk of talent in those 20 players to come into the mix as well.
Overall there's a nice round 65 players there - I challenge anyone to come up with a championship 15/26 for the first day out against Clare or Limerick on the 11th of June.

I think you are on the money here. Begley and OSullivan will be the only u21s there or thereabouts. The ? would have been Mark OConnor. D Walsh will probably play too with OBrien and Darren vying for one slot. C Geaney is the pick of young forwards coming thru but he and Clifford need time...

anybody at the game willing to give a report? There isnt a whole pile of positives to report on and a match report will just turn into a rant but safe to say- we were fairly poor all over. Teams still too easily run in straight lines through our defence, we were way too ponderous with the ball in the final third, last week we played with JOD and Savage inside- hitting them with some direct balls and they made hay- this week they both played very far from goal and werent anywhere near as effective. JOD needs to be inside as he takes too much out of the ball when he has time to think and to be honest we were tactically abysmal today.

I think the half forward line is a problem still.
The wing forwards in particular play extremely deep leaving us understaffed in the opposition half at times. This results in the full forward line dropping too deep, and all of a sudden we are a defensive team struggling to transition from defence to attack.

These unpredictable performances are a feature of the January/ February period for all teams every year.
I think it is because teams do a lot of stamina / gym work in the new season and are not fresh at the weekend for a game.
At least they fought it out, didn't accept defeat and showed that couple of young players are ready to step up.
I wasn't at the game but it appears that "hardy annual" problem is still there - players being allowed run through the centre.

if limerick are beating us in June, then its time to be worried.
for now, its an experimental work in progress, no need to be getting carried away. we dismantled Tipp with ease a few weeks back, did the same to cork...so lets not be about doom and gloom.
id be happy to pick up 6-8 points in the league, have a couple of all ireland club titles in the bag and the under 21 all ireland back in kerry, once May comes around. those 3 things, are very very much attainable.
we get them and we enter the championship in fine voice.

Some facts of the week-end. Dublin defeat Kildare, a Div 2 team, without any of the first team panel. Kerry with more than half their first team panel, scraped through against Limerick, a Div 4 team.

With the 'analysis' (or what passes for it on the current version of Terrace Talk) and some of the commentary on here, one could be forgiven for thinking the wheels have already come off Kerrys season. There was still a lot learned yesterday and surely that was the point of the exercise. I can remember Limerick beating us in the McGrath cup in Abbeyfeale a good few years back but it didn't do us any damage then and had we been beaten yesterday also, it wouldn't have had any long term impact either. As it was, we faced down the danger and won it despite playing well below our capabilities and that has to be good, particularly for the young lads.
In contrast to last week, I thought Jason Foley had a very good day yesterday. Shane Enright 'gave away' (dubious call by ref in my opinion but there you go)the penalty. Killian Young has had better days certainly but early days in the season yet. Paul Murphys injury might be a cause for concern but hopefully its not too much. Gavin Crowley, Pauls replacement in the first half was himself injured shortly before HT and was withdrawn in the second half by which time he had resumed limping. Tadhg Morley had a good game but wasn't, for me at least, the man of the match etc as I heard Patsy O'Connell saying this evening. For me Tadhg isn't a centre-back for the long haul at this level but no harm to give him game time there as the need may arise later in the season. Tom O'Sullivan also had a good game and will be there or thereabouts this year I believe. In my opinion, David Moran had a very good game (much more MOTM than anyone else) and this game wouldn't have been won without him. Jack Barry has potential and will have better days too. Barry O'Sullivan came in as Jacks replacement and worked well without being outstanding.
I would agree with those who say our half-forward line play too deep and go missing when we are trying to turn defence into attack. Yesterday was a classic case. Jonathan Lyne started there and finished as wingback, replacing Gavin Crowley there. Jack Savage is not a centre forward at this level at the present time. He needs to be closer to goal as his performance against Cork showed. Michael Geaney was very poor yesterday I thought. Not sure he'll be first choice anyway as the year goes on..certainly has work to do but so does everyone. For me Barry John mixes the great with the awful and yesterday was another example of this. Brilliant in parts but gave away the ball very easily on other occasions. Paul Geaney had one of his poorest games at FF but theres no fear of him and he'll return to form as the season goes on. The injury to JOD is also a concern...it appeared to be leg rather than shoulder though so that is at least something.
The six forwards we finished with is interesting...although it can be hard to tell sometimes where exactly guys are supposed to be playing when they come into a game that's sweeping up and down the field. By my reckoning the half-forward line was Adrian Spillane Brendan O'Sullivan Brian O'Seanachain (I think Denis Daly had dropped back to wingback when Adrian came on and Tom O'Sullivan went off) and the FF line at the end of the game was Conor Geaney, Kevin McCarthy and Conor Keane.
Ronan Shanahan also came on in the backs but for whom now I can't recall. Overall, I thought it was a great workout and called on the young guys in particular to show a little bottle. They did and they will have bigger days ahead.

I think the league. I was at the game and yes they were very poor. But it's the McGrath cup and its January do well know more after the league is over. I think we are still struggling to find the right balance and replace the great we had in 2009. Since Galvin and Declan retired and Darragh retired we have struggled to replace them. We need to find some new players in the league this year that's the bottom line. We can't go out with the same panel this year and expect to beat Dublin. The league will be interesting. It's there now for some new players to step up and make the team for the championship

Didn't get to this one, seems and sounds like a ropy day at the office, certainly wont be losing any sleep over a McGrath Cup game in January against Limerick. Not even last years League Final in April against Dublin held any relevance to their August tie later in the year. With the way the game is gone and the top three teams in the country have accelerated away from the chasing pack I'd say the Munster championship doesn't even hold much relevance now to the August/September championship window. This highlights the folly of the inter-county padding between January and August in the current fixtures schedule, much of it to the detriment of the club game. Kerry's team in transition will evolve over the course of the season.

I have a tape of the 2004 league final between Kerry and Galway. Big day for Jack in first year as manager. I watched it a few years ago and I must try to convert it to DVD and upload it. What struck me watching it again was how poor Aiden o mahony was that day in what was probably his first start in croker. Jack gave him time and he grew into a great player for kerry.
