I won't be on location tomorrow so that will make the alternative team configurations even less complicated, would have loved to be considered but sure that's life! Hey lads, wise up, the objective is to win back Sam. Fitzy is mad to play .. ah well .. KD, KY.. and omit .. Moran, etc, never the less I still think forum members are right in our selection ... and a drunk on the bus told me how to get rich ...
Bring it on man

Crokes beat Legion today in the League. James O'Donoghue played for Legion scored 4 or 5 points some frees. Good news for Kerry.

Positives
Brian Kelly played make a couple of good saves did enough to probably keep his place. Killian Young, Shane Enright, and Peter Crowley were solid. Begley and Morley did well in their first games. Kieran Donaghys workrate was fantastic always gives 100% for Kerry. Paul Murphy was all over the field. Great drafter. Colm Cooper should stay at no.11 he can pull the strings from that position. The full forward line looked dangerous. Stephen O'Brien had a brilliant first half. Paul Geaney looked dangerous good to have him back. 02-23 is good scoring no matter what standard.
Negatives
Clare were poor enough. Conceding 0-17 is a worry for sure. Clare picked the backs apart 3 or 4 times with runners. A better team would have scored a couple of Goals today. Same old story not picking up thee runners. I think Mark Griffin or Shane Enright will have to start there. Crowley on the wing. Midfield has no pace. We seriously lack a mobile midfielder who has a bit of speed. Maher, Donaghy, Moran, and Sheehan are not fast enough for this level. I am worried about midfield and our backs when teams run at us. We might get away with it against Tipperary but we will be exposed by Dublin or Mayo in Croke Park this year for sure.

Is there anything to be said for trying out Mark Griffin at centre field..I think Griffin is a bit of a Michael Darragh McAuley type figure. .He'd have no bother getting up and down the pitch..Needs to be a bit more clever with his distribution but certainly has plenty going for him.
On another note I'd definitely prefer to see Paul Murphy back in his natural habitat..He did most of his best work foraging in defence today..To me he looks a little at sea when in attack.Surely he should be reinstated there.

not a bad idea seanie Murphy at no.5 Griffin at no.6 and Crowley at no.7 would be worth thinking about i think. Begley Young and Enright possibly in the full back line. Griffin would be better at no.6 I think but we are crying out for a midfielder that can run with pace. You could try him there and look at Enright at no.6. One thing for sure we need to play a lot better when we go to croke park thats for sure.

I think we're missing a trick with him otherwise. The way he maraudes forward from wing back would remind you a bit of Tomás. He picks off scores as well, comes into moves late and off the shoulder, running with pace. There is penetration in that. Had an excellent League at wing back. .

The result was never in doubt, before or during the match. It was more or less decided after those two quickfire goals. The first one resulting when an effort for a point from distance by Colm looped over the hapless Clare goalie. The second one from Stephen O'Brien was of the more orthodox variety. It came after a run and a sizzling shot which seemed to hit the near post, glance off the far post and then home. Stephen, quiet in the first half, went wild for most of the first half, finished with 1-4 and one of those points crashed inches over the bar rather than under it. Paul was equally treacherous in that opening half, returning five points from play for the afternoon, in spite of being repeatedly fouled off the ball which the referee choose to blithely ignore. It is great to see this supremely talented man back on shore.
After that early flurry of scores we could have retired for tea in cricket parlance. The deal was concluded and it now was a matter of evaluating the overall performance for the rest of the game. That performance was no more than average, even allowing for the fact that this was the opening game of the series. The game itself was a very open affair as evidenced by the huge score registered by both teams. That huge score registered by Clare, 0-17, is a major worry. While the referee was generous in awarding them some presents, they cut through unmolested on too many occasions and Brian Kelly had to make one terrific save after one of those unattended scything exercises. Speaking of Brian, he did fine. During that opening half, KD was the dominant midfielder on the field with just a partial input from Bryan. Indeed Kieran was one of our principals all through before being replaced in the second half. He is some trooper. Gary Brennan and Cathal O'Connor possibly shaded it in the second half. Those two boys are probably as good as Kerry will encounter for the remainder of the year.
From a team point of view, the disappointing aspect is that some of the same fault lines were to be seen: the ease with which a limited opposition knifed through our defence on occasions, the sucking in of our half forward line into no man's land with the result that there were acres of space unoccupied by a Kerry jersey making it almost impossible for play to be linked from a defensive situation to a potentially lethal full forward line and the reluctance of so many players on so many instances to burst forward to a take a pass at pace. This latter attitude results in so much aimless, fruitless cross field passing. Harsh? Perhaps, but if we keep replicating these processes against the top teams 2016 will be another barren year.
The most pleasing aspect of our defensive play yesterday was the performance of Shane Enright. I felt Shane was poor in most of the NFL games, he may have been carrying any injury, but yesterday the zip, poise and temper was put on show. We certainly do not want Shane under performing in an already permeable defence. Killian was also very good. Mark Griffin was solid while making one or two mistakes one of which resulted in a gift point for Clare.
Peter Crowley lined out in the wing. He was adequate without ever reprising his NFL final display. I was terribly disappointed when young Brian and Tadhg Morley were replaced in the second half. While neither was completely luminous , they were not being overwhelmed. What were we going to learn about Marc O'Se, who was one the substitutes. On the other hand, Jonathan Lyne, the other replacement, was very very impressive.
Colm Cooper showed enough on the forty to suggest that he is likely to be retained there if JO'D returns. Donnchadh was moderate and got a harsh yellow card. He was never a prolific scored but usually chipped in with an average of two points and at one time in his career he was capable of scoring smart goals. However, the scoring aspect of his play is diminishing and he was virginal in that area yesterday also. In spite of scoring two points I thought Darren was poor, fumbling a lot of balls.
Paul Murphy I have left to last. It simply pains me to see our best half back wasting away in the forward line while our defence remains porous. Has the great CHF experiment been abandoned? Now a sideways move to the wing. Next move, the substitutes bench? Think Jonathan Lyne. There is no accounting for madness. Whatever Paul achieved yesterday was achieved in a defensive capacity. God, there was one incident when he encircled the feet of a Clare man to win a ball to which he had no title deeds.
BJK came on and kicked two points which his is trademark but what more were we going to learn about this effervescent man. Should the replacement not have been Alan Fitgerald?
Michael Geaney came on and got a black card, for what I have no idea. David Moran and, happily, Anthony Maher also appeared with the latter kicking a point.
It was a beautiful day and a fine crowd of over 11,000 came along. The numbers on the Clare and Limerick jerseys were clearly visible while the Kerry numbers may as well not have been on the jerseys at all. How can the County Board continue to turn a deaf ear to the disenchantment of supporters on this issue. Another gripe- why is there not a clock in the stadium?
P.S. I saw some of the the junior match. This was daylight robbery with a last minute goal securing a victory for Kerry. In that second half Limerick looked the better team. Sometimes there is absence of justice in life. Adrian Spillane at midfield and Niall O'Shea in the full forward line impressed most. Not one of the back line caught my fancy. That is disconcerting because that is where our major problems on the senior team exist.

Not a whole lot of talking points about yesterday in reality.
The new lads can be pleased with their performance without setting the world on fire. Pity Podge Collins got the black card cos I was enjoying the duel between Begley and him.
Full back line were on top and good to see Killian Young put in a strong performance.
Donaghy was the dominant midfielder but it wont be lost on Fitzy that his man still ran through the centre 3 or 4 times in the first half. Against better opposition those runs will lead to goals.
Gooch looked sharper than he has in a long time and as I alluded to a few months ago when he was criticised a lot on here, Steven O Brien is a "top of the ground" player. He will cause trouble for teams in Croke Park.
Tipp beating Cork might have raised a lot of smiles yesterday in the Stadium but I think the management would much have preferred to be facing Cork on July 3rd. Unless we get a tough 1/4 final (who is in Section A of the qualifiers that could give us that in Croke Park?), we will be facing Dublin at the end of August without a test. Similar to them I suppose.
