Kerry must be having Trials. Anyone know if they are playing any challenge games. They play Waterford in Waterford on April 13th. If they win that they play the winner of Clare v Limerick on May 11 I think at home in the Munster semi final.

They played St Brendan's over Xmas but other planned games did not go ahead due to the weather; they are training twice a week and on Saturdays.

Are minors training earlier and harder like the seniors? I never heard of January start but I am out of the loop these days.

Sounds heavy for youngsters although they are bigger and leaner these days. Then again a lot of new comers, fellas proving themselves this year getting the call up. It is interesting to compare the progression/attrition with senior level; I wonder is there any common trait that makes a minor a good senior? There is a common trait of fellas not playing Inter County until they are in the early 20's, fresher some argue. I suppose the 'Golden era' team were a benchmark and maybe even more so outside the county and those who live elsewhere will testify to the esteem in which they are even still held; Jack O'Shea is absolutely adored in Donegal.

Cormac Leane from Milltown is a fine shot stopper, perhaps doesn't dominate his square enough but I think Courtney would be better utilised in midfield....

After last years Minor Final I was talking to one of the back room team who told me that the team coming up for this year were way better than last year's, so watch out maybe they'll do a 3 in a row.

I wouldn't say away better but I think they are as good. They don't have a Mark O'Connor type midfielder this year so that might be their only weakness but very good forwards to pick from and good backs. I actually think they will win in 2017 if not this year. I think that team will be better. Overall though very good few years for Kerry. The standard at u14 and u15 is very high also which bodes very well for them too.

But I take your point on maybe midfield not being as strong as it was last year. I hear they could be looking at your clubman out the field this year? Darren Casey would be another option in the full forward line for me - Peter McCarthy from Legion was good for the combined Under 16 team two years ago too. Jason Foleys brother Michael should be in the reckoning in the half back line also. My sources always told me that more was expected of the 2016 team than the 2015 team. And of course we have the all conquering Kerry South team coming through in 2017. That conveyor belt is well oiled and well run. I feel all the talk of Dublin dominating for the next decade will be proved wide of the mark if we can nurture the 2014-2018 minors.

The exciting thing to me is to see how important the Jack O'Connor influence is. In my opinion he was hugely important in identifying the right minor players, acknowledging their strengths and told them into an all conquering unit. Looking at the 2015 and 2014 teams they are quite different in the type of players and in playing style. The west is very much awake judging on how well Dingle have been doing and how imperious PCD were the last two years. Recent results in the Corn Uí Mhuirí suggest that there is still plenty of minor talent around the county. It will be interesting to see how Kerry's future are doing under new management.

I totally agree he put Billy Courtney in goals last year. I never saw Billy play in goals ever and I would have never even thought about it. Jack made a huge difference. I definitely think that in the last few years also you see the Development squads making their mark and all the work that has been done in the last few years is starting to show with good coaching. It took Kerry a while to catch up to teams like Tyrone and Mayo and Dublin etc but now it looks like it's all in place. I watched the Kerry south u14 team playing in 2015 and they were very good so the future looks a lot brighter.

I know this hasn't to do with Minors directly but seems to be the only thread where I could ask. Are players who are coming out of u16s able to play at senior level this year? I had heard previously that it changed to only u18s being able to play now but I also heard it was once they turned aged 17 that they were allowed play. Hope for my own clubs sake that it is once they turn 17, need the players really. Should be up to clubs to manage their youngsters

You're spot on himself with the clubs Cormac Leane the keeper is from Milltown/Castlemaine. Shane Foley from O'Rahilly's another good keeper. I'll tell you who is not a bad keeper from a smaller club is Danny Quilter from St.Senans saw him play a couple of times. Saw him last year for Feale Rangers u16s thought he looked good. Yeah some good players from smaller clubs which makes Kerry great. Moriarty from Brosna good corner forward under again in 2017. TJ O'Connor from Cordal nice forward. Aaron McCarthy from Listry played full forward for East Kerry u16s this year that won the County u16 Championship. Firies had a very good u16 team this year and Na Gaeil. Tommy Lynch from Blenerville plays with the Green CBS. Eddie Horan from Scartaglin another good player i have seen play for Castleisland District u16s . Ryan Manning from Lispole play back or forward. Plays with Dingle school team. Dara Goulding from Ballyduff Sean Donnellan from Churchill Cathal Ferriter and Brian Kennedy from Annascaul. There is plenty talent in smaller clubs while they might not make it at Minor level I have no doubt some of them will at another level someday for Kerry

Turning 17 any day in 2017 (first year not u16). They are not allowed play senior for their club. So if they are not 17 before 1/1/16 they are out. People getting mixed up with this.think of it like this: If your AN u17 player u can't play. When u turn 17 in that year is irreverent. It really just means no one new can join the penal this year(age wise) and next year you can continue to introduce last year minors (turning 18 in given year) each year.
