One problem with the hurling league is that if you disperse with quarter-finals, you increase the possibility of meaningless games for teams towards the final rounds (you are likely to see it somewhat in the football league with the removal of the semi-finals)This means you end up with games where one side is battling to avoid relegation while the other side doesn't care what the result is. That's exactly it. As is often the case I find myself disagreeing with Martin Breheny's opinion. The hurling league had been a disaster for years. There were 8 teams and the top 5 or 6 were comfortable knowing they'd never go down. So several matches in the league were dead rubber. As long as the good teams won a few matches at the start, the last 2 or 3 games were pointless. And there were/are a limited number of top quality inter-county hurling games as there is. The league, at inter-county level, is there to provide games in preparation for the championship. With just 6 teams in a Division and just 5 games, each game is important. You lose a couple, you're fighting relegation. If you come in the bottom 2, you have to play off the final game with another top side of your level ie Galway and Cork, Kerry and Laois. This game will be of championship intensity as no one wants to drop. Job done. This is what the league is for. You could just as easily put the bottom team down but this is better as its a further big game in preparation for the championship. Surely exposing the hurlers to more of these type of games is a great thing for their development. They have also proved beyond doubt the first league win was not a flash in the pan and they completely merit their 1B status for next year. If we are good enough to stay up then people should not be worried about us having to play that extra game. Great stuff and well done to the hurlers. Looking forward to seeing their further development and improvement. You could also argue that if you're, say, Laois, all the league games are meaningless and you could just gear your preparations towards the play-offs. If you fancy yourself against the top side in 2A, then the incentive really isn't there to be competitive in the league proper.

what an achievement by the hurlers. I doubt even any of the more optimistic of hurling folk in the county envisaged survival in 1b at the outset. Ciaran Carey and Mark Foley clearly a serious team. Kerry also have some hurlers that are seriously talented as well. hopefully the form can be carried into the round robin in the championship

I wonder with Kerry hurling on the rise now, will all the good 17 and 18 year olds off the minor winning squads push on now and try and play Fitzgibbon cup hurling. That would really bring on the standard of the county team in 1b. I know they would be competing against A grade minor hurlers, but even making the Fitzgibbon squads would bring them on a tonne. County Board should start looking into scholarships etc in relation to this. There was one Kerry man present in the Fitzgubbon cup final program on LIT's panel. A Kenmare man Fionan O Sullivan who has two all Ireland minor medals aswell if I'm not mistaken. He would be worth looking into.

Laois beat Westmeath in the playoff this evening to stay up. That's both 1A and 1B where a team got no points and neither was relegated. Ridiculous stuff.

Psychologist helped Kerry players get over ‘hatred’ of one another
Wednesday, April 27, 2016 Jackie Cahill Kerry captain Daniel Collins admits that county colleagues used to “hate” each other before a psychologist helped them get past club rivalries for the common good.
And the 22-year-old believes the Kingdom’s progress was stifled by an often poisonous atmosphere within their own dressing-room.
But the 2015 campaign was a landmark one for Kerry as they gained promotion to Allianz Hurling League Division 1B before winning the Christy Ring Cup.
And Kerry continued that good form this spring by retaining their 1B status, scoring landmark victories over Laois and Offaly along the way.
Collins agrees Kerry are marked men as they prepare for the start of the Leinster SHC on Sunday, with Carlow the visitors to Austin Stack Park in Tralee.
But Kerry, under Limerick legend Ciarán Carey’s management, are confident they can emerge from a four-team group to book a quarter-final with Laois or Galway.
And with a new sense of harmony in the group, Collins is confident Kerry can continue along their upward curve, as club enmities have finally been put aside.
The Kilmoyley man said: “We discussed this with our psychologist, in the last couple of years especially. It used to get in the way maybe and affect Kerry hurling because fellas used (to) hate this fella here because he played for the club next door and they wouldn’t pass the ball to him and all of this sort of carry-on.
“That’s completely shut down now. The club stuff doesn’t matter anymore when you’re in with Kerry. Everyone gets on with everyone. And when we go back to the clubs we take each other’s heads off, but that’s exactly how you want it and that’s how fellas like it.”
The close proximity of a core group of senior hurling clubs in North Kerry, separated by no more than a few miles, helped to fester the ill feeling.
And Collins explained: “Those eight clubs, and they’re all only four or five miles apart, would end up playing each other five or six times a year. It’s just crazy, even if the rivalry isn’t as bad as it once was. Before, fellas used to hold grudges off the field, but now that’s gone. The rivalry is there on the pitch and it’s hard and it’s tough, but as soon as we go off the pitch every fella more or less does get on.”
Tough-tackling half-back Collins also represented Kerry as a minor footballer, and won an All-Ireland Club Intermediate medal with Ardfert last year.
He’s also a former minor and U21 B All-Ireland medallist with the Kerry hurlers and a player fast becoming accustomed to success. And while Kerry may not be competing in their own province, Collins is relishing the prospect of senior championship hurling.
He insisted: “I don’t think it’s strange, it’s something we’re more excited about than anything else. We can’t wait to get going, we’re itching for Sunday. We’ve had a number over Westmeath and Carlow for the last couple of years so they will definitely be gunning for us.”

Just a question relating to venues in the Leinster Hurling Championship, why is it that Kerry have 2 home games this year and Galway haven't been allowed to host any games? Or has that changed this year?

Am I raving or did I just see an RTE news report on the Kerry hurlers about their promotion to 2A under John Meyler and looking forward to the Christy Ring final in July???

If the round-robin games go to form (and of course that's not a given), Kerry and Offaly would meet in the final round with the winners going on to face Galway and the losers meeting Laois. Now wouldn't that be a poisoned chalice up for grabs. Bizarre situation, really.

Yeah it was pathetic and the sports guy didn't even seen to notice it, maybe he doesn't see the footgage of the report as it goes out but it was truly cringeworthy.

Are people really surprised by this latest cockup from RTE. Have you ever tried to get a GAA result on their AirTel service. You can get soccer and rugby scores as they happen but try getting a halftime or fulltime GAA score!!. During the NFL there were no scores available no matter what time you tuned into AirTel on Sunday evening. Ryle Nugent, head of RTE sport, wouldn't be a boy who would prioritise GAA but show him a rugby ball and an orgasm is induced straightaway.

This is much worse than a simple cock up. Kerry hurlers making their Leinster Championship debut is a really big story meriting coverage on prime time news. Footage covering this must have been shot and someone either foolishly or maliciously substituted very old material. And no one noticed even during the broadcast. Deputy heads should roll for this. ? Best of luck to our hurlers this weekend. Up the Kingdom!

The best or worst part depending on what why you look at it, was the part about Jack O Connor still being the football manager!

Great win. Gives us two chances now to qualify. Westmeaths 10 point win over offaly is a big surprise though. It was a win, but a below-par performance from Kerry for much of the game. A goal from John Egan and a bucketful of first-half wides by Carlow gave us a very, very flattering 2 point lead at the break. Granted, we were playing into a stiff enough breeze but were were second best in that half other than on the scoreboard. Our full forward line clearly had the measure of their men but we got to ball to them only sporadically. Our touch was off and we were ponderous in possession at times, with ball being given away needlessly. Gave our opponents far too much time and space, which they failed completely to make use of. Much better in the second half. A scrambled goal by Nolan was the crucial score, from which we never looked back. Jordan Conway, who looks like a child, came on and scored two beautiful points. Ran out easy winners in the end but only for the visitors' wastefulness in the first half, it could have been a whole lot different. Much improved performance required next Saturday, that's for sure.

Great win. Gives us two chances now to qualify. Westmeaths 10 point win over offaly is a big surprise though. Congrats to the hurlers. Fantastic result again. The Westmeath result has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons however. It could easily end up with three teams on 4 points. Initially it had looked like we had a great chance against Carlow and Westmeath, lose to Offaly, play Laois who we have beaten twice already and the potential of a possible Leinster semi v Galway.

Kerry 2-19 Carlow 0-17
Kerry broke new ground when they defeated on Carlow in the Leinster SHC round robin series qualifier at Austin Stack Park in Tralee.
It was Kerry’s first taste of Liam McCarthy since 2004 and while they won with eight points to spare, it was far from being a vintage performance, well below the high standards they set themselves in the last game against Laois.
Kerry did improve in the second half, once Brendan O’Leary was introduced to help out his overworked and closely guarded brother Michael, and this coupled with big performances at midfield by John Griffin and team captain Daniel Collins, the result was never in doubt, once Shane Nolan side-footed to the Carlow net in the 42nd minute.
Kerry were always comfortable after this despite not firing on all cylinders but the improved displays at the back by Darren Dineen, Tom Murnane and Jason Diggins, ensured that Carlow never got a sniff of a goal chance and the Kerry attack picked off scores with regularity, with young substitute Jordan Conway, firing over two superb points from the side-line.
Carlow had the wind to their backs in the opening half and really took the game to Kerry who were not in the same frame of mind as they were against Laois. In fact Carlow looked the Division 1B side in the opening half as Kerry were struggling to win any puck-outs either their own or Carlow.
In fact Kerry led 1-6 to 0-7 at the interval but it was a travesty because Carlow were wasteful in the extreme, amassing 13 first half wides and their shooting percentage was a paltry 35 per cent.
Jack Kavanagh opened the scoring for Carlow but Kerry were soon 0-3 to 0-1 in front after five minutes, thanks to points from John Egan, Shane Nolan (free) and Daniel Collins.
Then despite a fine point from Mikey Boyle, Carlow began dominating the middle third as Kerry looked very flat, and Carlow levelled thanks to two Martin Kavanagh frees and fine effort from Seamus Murphy.
Then came the crucial score of the half when John Griffin won a break, and send Colum Harty racing through and he placed John Egan who fired home a superb goal.
Carlow dominated the second quarter but their shooting was well below par and all they could add before the interval, was two Martin Kavanagh frees and one from play by John Michael Nolan.
Kerry were obviously told some home truths at half time by team boss Ciarán Carey who admitted to surprise to be going in two in front having played against the wind, because the Kingdom began to hurl much better in the second period.
Nolan had one from play and from a free on either side of his goal, with Richard Kelly keeping Carlow in touch with a point in 39th minute.
Egan and Hugh O’Byrne swapped points, before Kerry with the O’Leary brothers to the fore were on a 0-7 to 0-2 run so with just 10 minutes to go, they led 2-16 to 0-13 with John Griffin, Conway, Michael O’Leary, Jack Goulding and Mikey Boyle all adding to the scoreboard, as Carlow tired and it was Kerry who cruised to victory, without every reaching the heights of recent outings.
Kerry now faces Westmeath next weekend while Carlow play Offaly away.

Kerry: Shane Nolan 1-4 ( 0-3 frees), John Egan 1-3, J Griffin 0-3, Jack Goulding, Mikey Boyle and Jordan Conway 0-2 each, Darren Dineen (f), D Collins and M O’Leary 0-1 each:

Hope last weeks game against Carlow will have got the match rustiness out of the system as the lads did look sluggish in the first half and they should be a lot sharper this week, especially after Westmeath's great win over Offaly last weekend, they will be on high coming down to Tralee.

I see Brandon Barrett has been added to the panel. The u21 football final v Cork came a week too early for him and he wasnt right i am told. I think he might have made a difference as he is a great man to cover at the back, carry the ball forward and "make the hard yards" as they say.
