Clare had six of their All Ireland winners in action and Clare supporters told me that they have a huge amount of work done, maybe even too much for this time of year. Always sharper and stronger. Ground was a small bit soft but brilliant for the time of year and weather (jaysus, but it was bitter cold), kudos to Sixmilebridge. Disappointing scoreline, but the more games we can get like this the better we will be able to face it later on. I have no bother with the result but was disappointed in some displays - that said, Mikey Boyle was hugely competitive, Jason Diggins caught the eye again, and Jordan Conway is just a joy to watch, really clever hurler. We all know that this is going to be a very tough year - the players definitely have the heart and guts for it and I am very impressed by the management, I just hope that supporters are tough enough to stand by them later on, when it is most needed.

Good News for Kerry Hurlers
Kerry Senior Hurlers have received a boost on Saturday when Kerry's application to Central Council to retain the services of "outside" players was successful. The number of players has been limited to three and also limited to the players who saw service with Kerry in 2015. In the Christy Ring Final, Patrick Kelly (Clarecastle, Clare) lined out at midfield and Davy Butler (Knockavilla Kickhams, Tipperary) was introduced as a sub.

As to be expected Kerry didn't pick up any wins in the Munster league against experienced division 1 teams. It gave the younger players from Kerry a chance to test themselves against elite hurlers and the level that is expected.
If truth be told Kerry are probably a division 1C team along with Laois, Offaly, Antrim, Westmeath and Carlow.
I still think Kerry can do rightly in the Leinster campaign and make the q-finals.
Next stop is away to Laois on 14th Feb in first game of 1b league!

Mixed run in the Munster SHL. While not winning any of the games isn't a big deal, playing these teams was more important, the heavy losses in the last two games are a worry. One thing thats been learned is we have a very small panel to pick from , as many players played in all of the games. I've said it before but its really time that management stared to look outside of north kerry, and the county for that matter, for players. Crokes who have been in the last 2 intermediate finals have only one player, whos actually from Cork, Kenmare have been one of the stronger teams at that level and have no one etc Out of all of the south kerry teams there has to be at least 3/4 who could be looked at

Hurlingman no disrespect to the hurling people in south kerry but right now at this moment of time, there is nobody from south kerry that would make a difference or that would be good enough to be on the panel. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks Ciaran Carey will be able to pull in a few outsiders that will boast the first 15.

All of the games they've played the last few years? The over relying on outside players has back fired big time as it had to go as far as changing the rules.

I argue that Kieran Fitzibbon, Kevin O'Sullivan and John Mark Foley are all worth a look and as good as some on the panel. Perhaps Fionan O'Sullivan worth a look too. Perhaps they were asked - we don't know Football is so strong in Kenmare district at the moment hurling is at death door at adult level. The amount of walkovers by teams last year was unreal. The solution appears to be cut the co league division 2 into two groups!! It means a South Kerry club can only play 5 co league games!! may as well wind it down all together

If we weren't they wouldn't have needed a rule change. He's still not from Kerry at the end of the day. Ever since the outside players rule came in every single year Kerry have had 3/4 players. Last yer alone over the course of the season 5 different outside players were part of the panel

Its a big step up a massive one for a player to go from Division 2 County League and Intermediate Championship in Kerry to playing NHL 1B,maybe in a couple of years the U16 team that South Kerry had last year will come through and maybe a few of them will be playing for Kerry,
First things first, get the South Kerry senior team back on the road, let them play Division One County League and the Senior Championship and see how that goes, then if any player is doing well then call them in to the Kerry Panel.

Some of the names I mentioned played on the last Kerry minor hurling team that played in the Munster minor hurling championship. The others have featured prominently on Kerry minor hurling teams that won all Ireland b titles. They have played in minor county hurling finals. I reckon they worth a look. Players from South Kerry might have been approached for all we know. If they are interested call them in and see how it goes. They have shown at minor level that there are as good as any out North Kerry way. As you say they wont improve in div 2 of the co league where half the games are walkovers but they might if training under Ciaran Carey. You mention the south Kerry under 16 team in 2015. The lads I mentioned were as promising at under 16 and minor. Super players on the 2015 south Kerry team. Also on the Crotta team they defeated after 2 splendid games

Hey hurlers, excuse my ignorance but are we in Leinster because we will get more competitive games? It is great to see the game on the up and that win on TV lasy year was only comparable to Saturday's Kerry club double victories.

The Christy Ring winners qualify for the Leinster Round Robin group it was passed at congress last year so we had no choice on where to play,it was set in stone,it gives us a good starting point, Its a group where I think we will be more then competitive,if we can stay in that group and become comfortable playing at that standard for the next few years then maybe they will look at getting back into Munster but small steps for the time being.

Big game at the weekend against Laois, its the first game of what I think is a mini league within Division 1B
Laois,Offaly and ourselves will be looking at the games against each other as games where they would fancy the chances of getting points on board,
It would be massive to get a win on Sunday,Laois are a bit a head of us and had good year last year, but in saying that the same was said of Antrim,Carlow and Westmeath and the lads raised their game to match them and beat them.

Best of luck to our hurlers and management team tomorrow in their maiden match in division 1B and here's hoping that they come home tomorrow evening with a point or two in the bag. 'Twould do their confidence a world of good for some very tough upcoming encounters.

This is the season for rugby. Hurling, like cricket and lawn tennis should be played on a firm sod during the summer. How are weaker counties meant to improve their skills when they are shoved off the intercounty stage just as the summer is starting?

Savage win for the lads today, what a start to the league,it gets two important points on board, and it will give the lads great confidence going into the next few games,
I'm expecting noting from the Limerick and Clare games, but we should be competitive,
Looking at the other games we could rattle Wexford and we should be well good enough to give Offaly a run for it as well.
Getting a win against Offaly should be one to aim for now.

Laois 2-14 Kerry 1-24
Kerry got off to a perfect start in Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League with a 1-24 to 2-14 win over Laois in Portlaoise.
Ciaran Carey’s charges, newly promoted from Division 2A, produced a shock win over the hosts in a game which saw Laois reduced to 14 men following the late dismissal of Charlie Dwyer.
Kerry were strong in this contest throughout and led by 1-11 to 1-10 at half-time, with a Shane Nolan pointed 65 putting the visitors ahead at the break.
The Kingdom started this game brightly with Mikey Boyle striking a 13th-minute goal, while PJ Scully got Laois’s three-pointer in the 32nd minute.
Kerry pulled seven points clear as the game entered the final quarter, but Laois never gave up.
Cahir Healy got through for the hosts’ second goal, but Kerry were hungry and held out for a deserved win.
With the rising tide in Kerry hurling, the visitors were quietly confident of picking up full points against a Laois team with a number of retirements since last year’s championship campaign, including the influential Joe Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fitzgerald, John A Delaney, Brian Stapleton and James Walsh.
Aided by a strong wind, Kerry opened the scoring with a Michael O’Leary point in the second minute before Dwyer equalised for the hosts.
The visitors moved 0-03 to 0-01 ahead after eight minutes, and although Laois took a 0-04 to 0-03 lead in the 12th minute, Kerry were looking good.
Boyle’s goal soon followed, after a high ball inside and he cut behind the Laois defence to hand Kerry a 1-04 to 0-04 lead after 13 minutes.
Laois kept in touch and cut the gap to a point after 21 minutes before Kerry moved four points clear, with John Egan, Shane Nolan and Boyle on target.
The hosts fought back with three unanswered points before a Paddy Kelly score for Kerry.
Scully handed Laois a 1-10 to 1-09 lead after finishing to the net following a good delivery from Ciaran Collier.
Both sides missed goal chances in the closing stages of the half, with Nolan hitting the crossbar for Kerry and Stephen ‘Picky’ Maher also failing to convert.
Kerry finished the half strongly with two unanswered points, including a pointed 65' from Nolan to take a 1-11 to 1-10 interval lead.
Carey’s charges continued their good form on the restart, with John Egan, Harty and O’Leary on target to ensure a 1-14 to 1-10 scoreline after 38 minutes.
A PJ Scully pointed free halted Kerry’s scoring spree, but Kerry continued to impress.
Nolan was deadly accurate from placed balls and with good scores from Jack Goulding, John Griffin and Egan Kerry, they held a 1-22 to 1-12 lead after 59 minutes.
Laois rallied, with Healy firing a much-needed goal with six minutes left on the clock.
However, the hosts had too much to do, as Kerry held out for a famous win.
Scorers for Kerry: Shane Nolan (6f, 1 65) 0-09; Mikey Boyle 1-01; Jack Goulding, John Egan 0-03 each; Patrick Kelly, Colm Harty, Michael O'Leary 0-02 each; John Griffin, Jordan Conway 0-01 each
Scorers for Laois: PJ Scully (4f, 1 65) 1-06; Charlie Dwyer 0-04; Cahir Healy 1-00; Ciaran Collier 0-02; Stephen Maher, Matthew Whelan 0-01 each
Kerry: Martin Stackpoole; Sean Weir, Bryan Murphy, Keith Carmody; Daniel Collins, Darren Dineen, Tom Murnane; Patrick Kelly, Tommy Casey; Shane Nolan, Michael O’Leary, Colm Harty; John Egan, Mikey Boyle, Jack Goulding. Subs: John Griffin for Dineen (58); Jordan Conway for Egan (64)
Laois: Enda Rowland; Oisin Carroll, Darren Maher, Cahir Healy; Leigh Bergin, Neil Foyle, Ryan Mullaney; Matthew Whelan, Brendan Reddin; Ciaran Collier, Stephen Maher, Patrick Purcell; Dwane Palmer, Charlie Dwyer, PJ Scully. Subs: Joe Phelan for Reddan (46); John Lennon for Whelan (52); Mark Kavanagh for Palmer (56); Tom Delaney for Maher (71)

Today this team announced itself, Kerry hurling did. A comfortable seven point win against a side playing Division 1 and championship hurling for a number of years. They could get a land against Limerick next week, but the side will surely take great heart from the performance for the rest of the campaign, they've proved they can make the step up. Job done.
