Very tricky game for Kerry today. I am very wary of Westmeath. They beat Offaly by more than we did in the league. Niall O'Brien and Brendan Murtagh are very good forwards and Kerry will have to target their impact. If successful in that, we have the forwards to put up a winning score.

I see Brandon Barrett has been added to the panel. The u21 football final v Cork came a week too early for him and he wasnt right i am told. I think he might have made a difference as he is a great man to cover at the back, carry the ball forward and "make the hard yards" as they say. He appears to be highly rated by Jack O'Connor. I d say he is the first Causeway man to kick minor and under 21 football for Kerry? I would like to see his minor team mate from the football last year on the Kerry hurling panel - John Mark Foley, Kilgarvan. His father, uncles were very good hurlers for club and county and he has it as well. I think he struggling with injuries though

Westmeath power past Kerry to make Leinster quarters

Kerry 1-13 Westmeath 1-18
A fired-up Westmeath had too much for Kerry at a rain-sodden Austin Stack Park as they overcame the 14-man hosts 1-18 to 1-13 in their Leinster SHC round 2 qualifier.
Kerry’s cause wasn’t helped by the loss full-forward Mikey Boyle to a red card late in the second half and an injury to key player Michael O’Leary.
The Kingdom played second fiddle to Westmeath side after the break and they must now face Offaly in two weeks' time, when a win or draw will see them advance to the Leinster quarter-finals.
Nothing went right for Kerry but it wasn’t until the second half that the visitors began to press home their advantage.
Westmeath, who defeated Offaly so comprehensively in round 1 last weekend, opened the scoring in the second minute through midfielder Eoin Price but Shane Nolan levelled shortly afterwards when Jack Goulding was fouled.
Kerry were taking advantage of their extra numbers at the back with Darren Dineen in particular delivering long ball to a dangerous looking forward division.
Points followed from John Egan and a Nolan free after a Westmeath defender picked the ball up off the ground.
Kerry appeared to be having initial difficulties with the Westmeath system and they had a number of free men around the middle third of the pitch. This allowed Liam Varley to cut the gap with a nice point in the eighth minute.
The crucial score of the opening half came 60 seconds later when a ball dropped in from the right wing, Michael O’Leary sent it across the goal and when it broke, somehow Mikey Boyle, as he was falling, got his shot away and he buried it in the back of the Westmeath net.
Westmeath took over for the next 10 minutes, their full-back Tommy Doyle and wing-backs Aaron Craig and Aonghus Clarke to the fore, and Kerry did not score during this period.
Westmeath were level by the 20th minute thanks to points from Derek McNicholas, Alan Devine, Cormac Boyle and a free from Niall O’Brien to see Kerry level on a 1-3 to 0-6 scoreline.
Kerry eventually got to grips with the Westmeath game plan and John Griffin and Daniel Collins started to collect breaking ball at midfield while Patrick Kelly, Keith Carmody and Darren Dineen won vital ball at the back.
John Griffin fired Kerry ahead in the 22nd minute and despite shooting six first-half wides, excellent efforts from Jack Goulding, Brendan O’Leary and Nolan (two frees) had them 1-8 to 0-7 in front at the break.
Westmeath were a different team in the second half. They were totally dominant, scoring four points on the resumption from midfielders Eoin Price and Cormac Boyle, Robbie Greville (his second) and Cormac Boyle again to draw level.
Kerry were clearly struggling and a point from Mikey Boyle eased them ahead again.
However, Westmeath’s response was immediate and deadly. Derek McNicholas was in the right place to drill home Eoin Price’s long delivery in the 44th minute and this goal was the crucial score as it put them 1-11 to 1-9 ahead, a lead they would never surrender.
Westmeath were now dominant and four points in succession from Derek McNicholas, Niall O’Brien (2) and Aonghus Clarke in reply to a Philip Lucid point for the hosts had them ahead by four with 57 minutes gone.
Brendan O’Leary kept Kerry in the hunt but Derek McNicholas, who was now thundering into the action, eased Westmeath five clear on the 58th minute.
Westmeath finished strongly and points from Niall O’Brien and Brendan Murtagh pushed them six clear.
Kerry needed goals to revive their challenge but points from Lucid and Brandon Barrett were their only reward as Westmeath advanced to play Carlow knowing they have a home quarter-final with Galway secured. Kerry must regroup for their crunch collision with Offaly.

Mikey Boyle sent off in the last second of the game with the game already gone makes a difficult job even tougher next week. No real improvement from last week when we got out of jail thinks to Carlows shooting. Still second is still there for the taking

Offaly 1-17 Carlow 2-11
Shane Dooley lifted the pressure on the crisis-hit Offaly hurlers with a personal haul of 1-10 as they edged out Carlow by 1-17 to 2-11 in the Leinster SHC Round Robin series at O'Connor Park.
The Faithful men had to battle for a three points success as they restored some pride following their heavy defeat to Westmeath a week earlier.
Carlow finished the game with 13 men, due to straight red cards for Diarmuid Byrne and Hugh Paddy O’Byrne in the final five minutes as their chances of a first win in the series faded, in front of a sparse crowd of just 950.
Offaly suffered a pre-match blow with the loss of their captain and centre back Colin Egan, who picked up a rib injury during midweek training.
They were soon on the back foot, going three points behind in the opening three minutes, Seamus Murphy, Sean Murphy and James Doyle all firing over quick-fire points.
By the fifth minute the Barrowsiders were 0-5 to 0-1 ahead and exposing huge gaps in the home defence.
Kevin McDonald eased out in front of his marker too easily to swing over a score, while James Doyle charged through virtually unchallenged to land his second.
It was Kevin Connolly who nailed Offaly’s opening score, but they were heavily dependent on Shane Dooley’s exceptional finishing as they clawed their way back into the game.
He sent over an exquisite sideline cut, as well as a string of frees, punishing uncertainty in the Carlow defence.
Pat Camon got into the midfield trenches to dig out valuable possession which drove the Fairthul men forward, and Dooley obliged with the scores that sent them three points clear by the 28th minute.
But danger was never too far away at the back, and Chris McDonald had to be alert to nip in and intercept Martin Kavanagh’s menacing cross.
Carlow created another goal chance on the half-hour, and this time Ross Smithers drilled his shot crisply to the bottom corner of the net from 20 metres to level the game.
McDonalds’s free sent the visitors in with a 1-7 to 0-9 lead, and they failed to capitalise on their utter dominance of the opening stages of the second half, Seamus Murphy kicking just wide with the goal at his mercy.
They did scramble home a 44th minute goal through Kevin McDonald, but Dooley hit back with a goal inside 30 seconds, finishing from close range after Joe Bergin had made the driving run.
Two Paddy Murphy points helped them open out a three point advantage heading into the final 15 minutes, but Carlow goalkeeper Brian Treacy kept his side in it with fine saves from Dooley and Jason Sampson.
Carlow lost two men to straight red cards in the final five minutes, the influential Diarmuid Byrne followed to the line by substitute Hugh Paddy O’Byrne.
They also had goalkeeper Dempsey red-carded by referee James McGrath after the final whistle.
Offaly: J Dempsey, P Rigney, D Shortt, C McDonald, D Mooney, S Gardiner, D King, P Camon, S Cleary, S Kinsella, J Bergin (0-02, 1f), C Kelly, P Murphy (0-02), S Dooley (1-10, 6f, 1 ’65, 1 s/l), K Connolly (0-01).
Subs: J Mulrooney (0-02) for Kelly, P Guinan for Cleary, J Sampson for Connolly
Carlow: B Treacy, G Coady, M Ryan, A Corcoran, D Byrne (0-01), R Coady, J O’Hara, J Doyle (0-03), R Kelly, S Murphy (1-01), M Kavanagh, K McDonald (0-02, 1f), JM Nolan (0-01), S Murphy (0-01), R Smithers (1-00).
Subs: D Murphy (0-02, 1f) for McDonald, HP O’Byrne for Nolan, C Lawlor for Kelly
Referee: J McGrath (Westmeath).

It's still hard to gauge Kerry's level. They done so well against Laois and Offaly in the 1b league but championship is a bigger step up and Carlow shot a lot of wides but kerry took over in 2nd half to win. Westmeath the better team today but hard to know is it because kerry are not performing to the high standards to set themselves or they are genuinely struggling in the Leinster campaign?
Westmeath had a few Clonkill club players on the team today, they won the Intermediate club all ireland back in 2008 against Middletown of Armagh. They seem to play now in the Leinster Senior club champ and do well against wexford senior teams etc. The Antrim Intermidate champs O'donovan Rossa won the all Ireland club Intermidate in 2015 aswel.
My question is why are the Kerry club teams not progressing well in the Intermdiate Munster competition?
Ballyduff ran effin close one year but Kilmoyley struggled and no kerry team has won a munster Intermdiate title.
I think the kerry North hurling clubs needs to become stronger, maybe the numbers in these villages are quite small or are they happy just to win the county and then celebrate that?

Being happy to win the county is one of the problems. Also the fact that the North Kerry teams play eachother too much isn't helping, NK league and championship plus county leage and championship. You could be playing the same team 5/6 times a year and thats no good. Also the fact that the Intermediate winners, when its a South Kerry team, dont go up and are happy to play at that level isn;t helping. The key really is that the clubs dont play enough games at a high standard. There was a Munster league a few years back what happened to that? Also i feel there is room for 3 combinations in the SHC. Kenmare and Kilgarvan as South Kerry, Crokes and St Pats as Killarney or East Kerry and Stacks with Daugh as a third. This would freshen things up in a big way while also giving the Crokes, Stacks players etc better games. This year Stacks and St Pats are both playing in the South Kerry senior league and taht can only be good. I also think having the IT play should be look at on a trial for a 1 or 2

HurlingMan I think you hit the nail on the head, the clubs play eachother too many times throughout the year at that same level.
Compare that to the Cork Intermediate premier champ, 16 teams in it who would play in league aswel. Very strong standard and that's the teams kerry would meet in Munster intermediate.
So maybe we should applaud these kerry hurlers because they are playing to a serious high level quite above themselves and that is no mean achievement in a football obsessed county.
The combinations could be good but stacks and duagh even combined could ship woeful beatings against Ballyduff, kilmoyley, Ardfert and Lixnaw.
Who would be favourites to win the Kerry SHC this year?

It often occurred to me that there must be a big number of fellas from around Munster (all hurling counties) and counties just beyond that like Galway, Offaly, Kilkenny and Wexford working in Kerry who are reasonably good hurlers and would be interested in playing club hurling. I am thinking about banks, guards, teachers and loads of other areas of employment but we never see them in the county hurling championship. There seems to be a very parochial attitude amongst the hurling clubs of North Kerry. The county board must take responsibility for not having a meaningful team in the vast area between Tralee and Kenmare. I have seen how other counties deal with these opportunities and it appears that Kerry is not doing enough. TG4 has had a series of programmes about how clubs spring up around the world because people just want to play the games, but when a hurler arrives in Kerry he is condemned to retirement.

The Carlow clubs play in Kilkenny so why cant the Kerry clubs play in Limerick county leagues, the Camogie teams do it so why cant the hurling clubs do it,be better then playing meaningless challenge games and that joke of a competition that was the West Munster League, teams pulling out leaving some groups with Kerry teams only.
As for yesterday,Kerry couldn't match the hunger and the hurling of Westmeath, they were badly caught for pace as well,Westmeath had a gameplan and they played it well, not letting Kerry win any clean ball from the puck outs, hassling them all game making them turn over the ball,
When the ball went long from the puck out we couldnt win it and when we tried the short puck out it didnt work out either as a few times passes went a stray which brought more Westmeath pressure on us.
Some how Ciaran Carey and his management team will have to try and get the lads back in the same mind frame as they had for the Laois game, they need to get back to that level if they want the season to go on
At the start of the season I would have taken staying in 1B and staying in the quailfer group, anything after that would be a bonus

Yes i agree at Stacks Duagh team would get some beatings but it would still bring something different to the table. Last year and this Stacks have actually brought in quite a few minors from Parnells so it would be good to bring onlong lads like that

@kerrydude, the logistics really suited Carlow clubs to join the Kilkenny lower leagues. The border between them meant Carlow clubs only had to travel 15minutes to get really strong club league games. Abbeyfeale, rathkeale, newcastlewest woudlnt really be hurling strongholds in Limerick for the north Kerry teams to play. They would have to travel further into Limerick and join the intermediate leagues and play them teams. I know the Kerry underage teams are doing it so maybe they will bear fruits down the line. A strong Causeway comprehensive hurling school again is vital aswel to develop the young players.
It will be good to see how the younger lads on the Kerry panel will perform for their clubs this summer after been exposed to 1b hurling, hopefully it will give the local SHC a big lift!

Another thing i've meant to highlight before is Radio Kerrys ''live coverage'' of the hurling games. I was told again yesterday in the middle of the game they would cut off for horse racing results and even worse ad brakes! A few weeks ago someone text Kerry Today about it and they were told something along the lines of that people who listen to Radio Kerry are interested in a lot of different sports and they want to fit everythign in! Funny because when theres a football game on live they dont seem to worry about other peoples interests in other sports

Kerry: Aidan McCabe; Bryan Murphy, Patrick Kelly, Keith Carmody; Jason Diggins, Darren Dineen, Tom Murnane; John Griffin, Daniel Collins; Colum Harty , Michael O’Leary, Shane Nolan; Jack Goulding , Mikey Boyle, John Egan.
Subs: Brendan O’Leary for C Harty (47 inj), J Conway for S Nolan (48), Brandon Barrett for Brendan O’Leary (68), Dougie Fitzell for B Murphy (68), James O’Connor for Jack Goulding ( 68)
The ones highlighted are on the go in both codes too. A few have been on the go now virtually non stop between club and county for ages and fatigue is bound to be a factor.

Offaly hurling manager Eamonn Kelly has revealed the extent of the vile abuse he has received over the past seven days since his team was beaten in the Leinster championship by Westmeath. Kelly's side bounced back from the 2-22 to 1-11 defeat to the Lakesiders to beat Carlow by 1-17 to 2-11 at Tullamore yesterday, with Shane Dooley contributing 1-10 of their tally. It has been a very difficult week for hurling in the Faithful county in the aftermath of the defeat and Kelly has outlined some of the horrid abuse both he and his players have been subjected to.
"I don’t ever want to get a week like it again where you have cowards ringing you on private numbers and telling you what they think of you," he told Midlands Radio. "The stuff I got thrown at me on social media - I know that goes with the terrain - but we’re trying to do everything we can and the players inside are doing everything in their power.
"We had three lads walk from the panel with a comment that they don’t like where there this thing is going and they don’t want to be associated with it but what you have left in the dressing room there are very honest players and they’re working very very hard. "The point I’m trying to make is that we’re all trying to do the right thing. There’s nobody in there cutting any corners, they’re making a huge effort.
"We had a bad day at the office against Westmeath last weekend – we know that – but the only good thing is that Westmeath have beaten Kerry today so we have our destiny in our hands in two week’s time." Offaly can still make the quarter-finals of the Leinster championship with victory over Kerry in their final round robin game.

We seemed to have this debate every time we lose a game for the last few years, how to best raise the standard in our senior county championship and therefore raise our county team standard. It namely revolves getting participation around the county from clubs outside the North Kerry 8 such as Kenmare and Kilgarvan and therefore seeing whether those players are up to county standard which means we would be picking from 10 or 11 clubs rather than just 8 for our senior county team, thereby adding increasing the quality and depth within the squad by those extra players being contributed from the additional clubs. It may happen, it may not happen, either way it will take around 10 years for to properly get the structures in place for this to happen, especially with a fledgling Tralee Parnells but it certainly wont happen before the Offaly game Saturday week.
Look im no expert in the game, from a non hurling part of the county, but I wander in once or twice a year to see the county hurlers play. I dont target any specfic games to attend or not attend, its a matter of looking at the paper , seeing the time of the game, and if I have nothing better to do I go in. I also like attending a good few county hurling championship games.
Therefore it would be remiss of me to criticise the efforts of the players and management with the massive strides we have made in the last 3 years, and its unfortunate with the great results we had this year the only 2 games I saw was the Wexford game on TV and Westmeath live last Saturday, far from the usual standard the team has shown it was capable of.
Nonetheless, far from a seasoned observer I am, a few things caught the eye. The ease Westmeath were allowed to build from the back with minimal pressure, particulary in the 2nd half when we were chasing the game was dissapointing. We made no attempts to rectify this whatsoever. We were 5 points down with 10 minutes to go in the championship at home to westmeath, now thats no disrespect to Westmeath, they are on the very same level as us, but thats the point, we are equal enough sides, it wasnt that we were playing Kilkenny or Clare here and trying to limit them , we are playing a similiar quality team, and there has to come a point you have to put the hurl up abandon your sweeper and go for it. 10/15 minutes to go 5 points down, it was time to push up on them, stop giving them soft ball, pressure them, make them panic and think they will be hanging on this instead of letting puck out to their corner or wing back who then all day to play a ball from his own 45 over the head/ or diagonally across the Kerry sweeper who role it was to help cut out the puckouts from the goalie when he went long. But he wasnt going long, that extra body in the Half back line was being taken completely out of the game, by the delivery from the Westmeath backs. It surely was obvious at that point this plan wasnt working , we are losing and being outplayed for large parts of the game, but yet we continued on with no change hoping it would change. A definition of madness.
Its not that I have anything against playing a sweeper, but there is times when you have to go man to man likewise there is times when you have to play a sweeper, and my point is I think with 10 minutes to go against a similiar quality Westmeath team Kerry have the ability to go man to man and try to claw it back particularly in a championship game where you are at home and chasing a game and have fowards of the quality of John Egan inside. Anyone would think with 10 minutes to go it was Kerry defending their lead, only having one man inside.
But look cest la vie and that was the one point that stood out for me. Not trying to find rumours where there is none or whatever but I did find Ciaran Careys comments in The Kerryman though quite unusual, he seemed to blame the players entirely for the defeat when he says "It was players who lost it for us", you can go and see it yourself. But that is an odd comment, I often hear a manager say, "Praise the players not me, I only pick the team" but when you hear it the other way around it would suggest disharmony of some sort.

How do people see the Offaly game going? Hard to know. Which Kerry will turn up? Two poor performances on the trot now. Offaly should be favourites, especially being at home, but how is their morale at this stage? I assume a draw would do us, having a better points difference. We'll need to pull out all the stops to get any sort of a result though. Some key players maybe going off the boil at the wrong time. Michael O'Leary has struggled in both games. Shane Nolan called ashore in both. Mikey Boyle's straight red the last day doesn't help at all (I'm assuming he's suspended for this one).

They clearly peaked in the playoff v Laois and its been poor since. Huge performance needed.

The Offaly manager knows Kerry inside out so maybe the Kerry team picked is not the real one. Opponents know that to beat Kerry you put two men on Michael OLeary when the Kerry puckout is taken. Are Kerry going to go short with every puckout now?
You have no change in hurling or football unless your half forward line dominates.
Logic tells me that Offaly will win.
Unless Kerry find the form that blew Laois away.

Mike O’Halloran on a make or break match for Kerry as they face Offaly in Tullamore tomorrow in the Leinster SHC (throw-in 3pm)…
John Egan ahead of his man. Photo by Gavin O'Connor. Kerry needs a big game from John Egan this Sunday.
Kerry face Offaly on Sunday in a make or break game where the winner takes all.
I think we all expected that Kerry would be travelling to Tullamore with two wins under their belt, but unfortunately they fell to Westmeath in Tralee – Westmeath had already beaten Offaly.
When I started previewing Kerry’s journey in Division 1B and The Leinster Round Robin Series, I was hoping that the reporting was not going to be one-eyed.
I counselled that there were going to be good and bad days and as in all journeys there were going to be inclines and descents, turns and detours but from once there was progression towards journey’s end then all was well.
Kerry took a huge step in Portlaoise when they defeated Laois, there was an uphill climb when they met Limerick in Killarney, two dead ends in Tralee and Clare, with losses against Clare and Wexford.
A detour to Birr put them back in the right direction with a heart-stopping win over Offaly.
Carlow found their way to Tralee for Kerry to redirect them out the road defeated. Westmeath negotiated their way to Austin Stack Park and punctured the front and back tyres of the Kerry bus.
There was lots of talk by some people (who seldom see the Kerry hurlers play) about the “lovely open brand of hurling” they were playing. Unfortunately lovely open hurling does not win big games anymore as Kerry found out in their last game.
Kerry had a taste of the kind of defensive set up they might face when they were out played by Waterford “behind closed doors”.
It might be going too far to say that hurling is heading down “the puke hurling” road, but the defensive tactics being deployed by some teams certainly could lead to the Stadia of Thurles and Croke Park becoming the Vomitaria of hurling.
I have no doubt that when Kerry arrive in Tullamore they will be met by an Offaly team that will have learned a lot from the first outing in Birr.
It is fairly obvious that Westmeath had done a lot of homework on the Kerry method of play, given that they held most of the scoring forwards to very few scores and Offaly will try to replicate this.
Kerry for their part surely have given thought as to how they might overcome Offaly who just about got over Carlow by three points, relying on one player to score thirteen points.
Kerry shackled Dooley well in Birr and only allowed Offaly shots from distance late in the second half when they were pressing to get back into the game.
Kerry must also not concede as many frees as Carlow, because Dooley will punish all discretions. The shackles put on Dooley in Birr will have to be tighter on Sunday, otherwise he will put Kerry on the rack.
I think we can depend on the Kerry backs to hold up their end even though it is very hard to understand why Keith Carmody switches positions with Jason Diggins.
The move of Darren Dineen to midfield will no doubt strengthen that sector but it is strange to move Tom Murnane to centre back as he has played most of his hurling on the wing.
Huge changes up front one of them enforced with Michael Boyle out through suspension. One must question who is going to win any ball in the air, as neither Michael or Brendan O’Leary make the starting fifteen.
Attempting to win ball in the air has been the cornerstone of the Kerry plan in all games I’ve seen, with nearly all puck outs going towards O’Leary.
Kerry will need big games from Shane Nolan who is selected at centre forward. Shane will have to contribute more from open play. Jack Goulding is beside him and he will have to work very hard to get ball to Egan and provide scores himself.
Shane has not been his glorious self recently, he came on as a sub in the game in Birr and scored a point he will need to score a lot more on Sunday, Sunday could be his day to regain his mojo.
Great to see young Jordan Conway starting. He had a huge game in Birr. Philip Lucid also starts, the Ballyheigue man now has a chance to stake a claim for the future.
There will be no shortage of free takers with Nolan, Egan and Lucid excellent from placed balls. The inclusion of Brandon Barrett is a massive plus for Kerry as there are few players in Kerry with his determination bravery and skill. Kerry will need goals and any of the six forwards named can supply one.
Expect to see the O’Learys introduced if needed earlier rather than later.
This leg of journey for Kerry may come to and end on Sunday if they are defeated by Offaly, but the baby steps taken over the past three years should eventually lead to giant strides over the next few years.
Even if Kerry cannot overcome Offaly on Sunday they will have done enough for the past three seasons for the progression to continue in the years to come.
This group of players must be nurtured because, a crop of players like these only come along once in a generation. I am very reticent to tip Kerry to win. I hope they do but it will be difficult.
If a win is pulled out of the fire in Tullamore it will be a feat to be honoured and it could lead to a place in the semi-final as Kerry would fancy their chances against Laois. Win or lose this team needs to be supported in their journey into the future.
