Kevin McStay has described his 18 years on The Sunday Game as a "special time in my life" - and defended RTÉ's flagship Sunday night highlights show against accusations that it was too much of an agenda-setter for the GAA.
The Mayo forward-turned-pundit is departing the Montrose studios - as well as these pages of The Herald, where his widely-read column appeared for eight championships - to become joint-manager of Roscommon.
During his time in RTÉ, The Sunday Game's role in highlighting disciplinary flashpoints elicited mixed opinion - with affected counties usually loudest in their criticism.
But McStay insisted that "the standard of editorial critique on The Sunday Game has been beyond reproach in the 18 years. I can say that, straight out. It has been outstanding."
Measure
He added: "It's a huge programme - half a million people watch it on a regular basis, I think. Of course it's going to set the agenda. Like, our view always on a Monday or Tuesday was did something come out at the weekend that we didn't get? That would be the measure."
However, any issues highlighted had to be "legitimate and correct and proper." While certain pundits may have aired "strong opinions", the editorial meetings were always conducted "without fear or favour" and there was "never a sense" of going after a player or incident.
McStay paid tribute to various RTÉ personnel who drove the show during his time, name-checking Paul Byrnes, Colm McGee, Rory O'Neill, Bill Lalor, Maurice Reidy, presenters Michael Lyster and Des Cahill.
And he had high praise for Ciarán Whelan, describing the former Dublin midfielder and fellow Herald columnist as "the best football analyst - and also my favourite one".

I always remember a gmae between Cavan and Wicklow in 2010 when the highlights were shown. A Cavan player was sent off and promptly went over and shoved the referee on his way off. Was it remarked on by any pundit afterwards? Not one single word about it.
The standard of editorial critique was definitely not beyond reproach that night. What's worse is that the CCC take their lead from the pundits instead of watching all the games and identifying instances like this themselves. The last thing you want from the guys setting the disciplinary standards is following others opinions like sheep

And wasn't it the same night that Tomás got fingered for a suspension when TSG made a song and dance over some incident that hadn't occurred to anyone beforehand.

Says a lot if he thinks Whelan is the best football analyst. He's not the worst, but far from the best.
Curry McStay has gone out of his way to go after players. Remember he wanted Paul Geaney to get a back card against Cork the first day?

A laughable piece by McStay. My question, what is going to replace the income from the media work? Ten years ago each appearance on TSG was worth €1,400. I don't know what they are paid today. The piece on the Herald must be worth a few bob also.
The mileage potential from Roscommon town to the Hyde wouldn't be all that great! You'd hardly have time to even eat a bag of Curry chips while in transit.

At least he admits tsg does try and drive the agenda. Agendas by their nature are subjective.

Fair enough, I couldn't believe McStay would have said that, apologies Mick. The comment about Whelan is clearly a wind-up by McStay. Whelan called McStay out several times for things he said, most especially the disgraceful and slanderous stuff he said about Philly McMahon re-the alleged head-butt.

accepted........no problem......I think Philly McMahon was innocent of the head butt allegation. I saw a video online somewhere from another angle of OShea grabbing McMahons and pulling him towards himself. (Unless twas photoshopped...you just cant be sure of anything anymore)

You think box office comical Ali Joe is coming down from Derry for that.

Sunday game lost all credibility for me this year in how they handled the Tiernan McCann incident versus how they handled the McMahon incident. Whelan was calling for a public apology from McCann and really went to town on him. Then, McMahon does a far more despicable act in gouging a player and it's pretty much glossed over by the entire panel. If we are to take the analysis on the Sunday Game seriously then they need to have pundits on it who are partisan. Another thing as well, I wish they'd stop stating that certain players like to 'play on the edge'. There is a big difference between playing on the edge and just being a thug!

McStay is an a.rsehole. A low-key, comes across as nice, very thorough professional, seems so thoughtful and considered and balanced but after many years and several slips of the mask quite clearly-a.rsehole.

That programme lost creditability years ago. God be with the days when Enda Colleran and Liz Howard where the anchors on the programme.
