On paper, Kerry have so much more quality than Tyrone at the moment. But the game isn't played on paper (forgive me the cliche!).
IMO Kerry's best bet is to put this to bed as early as possible. The Kerry team of the noughties were brilliant at this, as Mayo will testify. Especially when they got to Croke Park. Game over after 15 minutes on plenty of occasions. They had the knack of starting at a ferocious pace, racking up a big early score, and so scuttling any pretence their opponents had to winning (startled earwigs).
I suspect the current Kerry team also possess this attribute, but its time to show it now. Because if they don't and Tyrone are still in the game at the 50 minute mark, then it gets ropey for your lads. Tyrone are excellent at gnawing away at you, distracting you, removing your focus, before you know it the clock is approaching 70, its all square, and it's squeaky bum time as Fergie would say. Kerry absolutely could do without this scenario. Even though Tyrone are rated fourth of those still standing, I'm glad Dublin haven't got them in the semi, for the reasons outlined above. Our last few games against them have been dogfights, always only a score or two in it, even though it was clear that Dublin had better footballers. Tactically, Kerry may be better served by reinstalling Donaghy, because the little pop passes that looked lovely v Kildare will be gobbled up by Tyrone. Thats about as much as I'll venture on the tactical front, but it should be fascinating whatever tactics are employed. Oh and I'd start Sheehan, Tyrone could be rode on the free count after their antics at the weekend, and Sheehan will hurt them on that score. I hope your lads do it because the final will be mouth watering no matter the outcome in the other semi.

If Kerry are not in front by at least 4 or 5 points with 20 minutes to go then we'll be in trouble. Force Tyrone to chase the game and the gaps will appear.

I think its a year or two early for this Tyrone team .. We're not yet at your level or that of Mayo or Dublin for that matter but Im hopeful that we'll give you a decent game anyway... You just have too many good players all over the pitch, esp forwards, and although we're getting there we aint there yet..
Can be sure but I have a feeling you'll be playing Mayo in the final..

I'd be surprised if the ref doesn't absolutely ride Tyrone with all the negative press they're sure to get in the next few weeks.
Very hard to see us being beaten IMO.

Fitzmaurice and Mickey Harte come up with their own rules for the semi-final: Paul Galvin said if McMenamin is playing, he'd like an addendum to those rules.

I think he means that the referee might only 'ref one team'. Pretty much. The Cavanaghs & McAliskey are getting a load of press for diving and Duffy is getting laced for giving them so many soft frees. It's all to the good for us.

Veteran stated in a recent post that " Discipline is the key " and he is absolutely correct. Tyrone will try every trick in the book - and a few that are in no book - to frustrate Kerry . They will not beat us playing football so their only option is to drag us down to their level. Getting involved with them In a dogfight will cause us to lose our focus with the resultant distraction to our concentration levels and then we are in deep trouble..
With no protection from Referees it's difficult to maintain discipline - the natural inclination is to respond by fighting ones own corner. And some might point out we allowed ourselves to be bullied in 2005 and kept our discipline and still lost. We must take the knocks and get on with it. God be with John Egan - whenever he was clattered he just got up and got on with it. Remember Donnacha Walsh when late shouldered into the chest in the recent Munster Final ? he immediately got up and went back into position. And David Moran just ignores wallops and looks to move the ball on. These are the virtues our players must show no matter what the provocation. Our veterans a la Marc , Aidan , Star , Brian , Paul and Tommy will forewarn what is in store for our younger players and whilst this will be a totally different experience for them and one they'll have never encountered their grit determination and honesty in last years games against Mayo and Donegal will have given them an experience that this Tyrone team have yet to know. We have a winning mixture of great youth and great experience and a Manager who has proved himself as a player and now as an Alll Ireland winning Manager so subject to the warnings above let Tyrone worry about us.

I mentioned Mickey Harte's ABK mantra and the only person I heard say it was, well the man himself, on a stage in Monaghan. Anyway the ABx stuf is incidental stuff and shouldn't distract us from the main contentions. I do stand over what I said about fooling refs and those who fake fouls can have no gripe when they start to loose the benefit of the doubt, and which is more often than many realise.
We beat Tyrone in the league when mattered less and it was because we didn't cope/adapt to 'the northern blanket/defensive style' and 'hunting in packs'. We have adapted now so let's see if this contention bears fruit.
Old friends are best!

There is a fine line between losing discipline and standing up for yourself.
I expect Tyrone to have a cut and play cleaner than the QF --- it does take two to tango.

I would much rather it if we were going into this game with no media storm or controversies. Even when the storm is over the opposition and not us I still don't like it. I like life to be boring! We shouldn't have to second guess how a referee will or won't be affected. I doubt Tyrone will be affected by the negative attention and press. The will see that they won a 1/4 final handily enough employing these methods. They won't give a hoot about Colm O'rourke or Ciaran Whelan.

No doubt there was some unsavoury stuff at the end of the match but you would swear that we are the only culprits of this .. I couldnt make the game so I watched on Sky .. every single free we got Dara O'Se said it was soft .. right from Goggly (or what ever the feck his name is) punching Myler in the mouth (which Dara laughed at ) to Finley punching Sean C in the back of the head and the side of the Jaw .. Apparently nothing in it according to Dara.. I couldnt believe my ears!! And then on TSg you have Wheelan & O'Rourke not saying a word about any of these incidents ... Crazy one sided nonsense !! But here, we expect that now so no big deal I suppose.. I fully condemn what McCann did, its horrible but thats not why Hughes was sent off .. He was sent off for the tackle on C Cavanagh..

I can't help thinking of Keyser Soze when I think of Mickey Harte. I would do up an old graphic but I still admire the man: I am just a bit confused by the antics of his team. There is nothing to be confused about. His teams have always had a nasty cynical side to them. It comes from the top with Tyrone.

I think we can all agree that Tyrone are in the semi on merit as they were clearly better than Monaghan on the day. In preparing for the match I'm sure Eamon & co will focus on footballing skills and leave dealing with the negative stuff wherever it comes from to the referee.

The most cynical team I have ever seen was the Tyrone minors in the 04 final I think it was.
5 different players took it in turns to haul Darren down when he set off in a run. It was so bad mcstay highlighted it on the Sunday game that night.
It was so obviously pre-meditated. The antics on Saturday were just that; antics. Game was over when most of it stared

Us chattin' is not drawing in the players, our guys will care less than Tyrone and you can be sure Mickey will pull another rabbit on the day only this time Éamonn will unleash a hound. I think Ulster football is now merging with our style as we have proven we can adapt and win regardless of the ground rules. The only that never changes is change itself.

I think Darren could well be our ace in the hole the next day though.
I just have this awful vision of S O' B running into traffic and turning over. He certainly has improved but he got a lot of room the last day. Anyone else feel this way.? He DID play well though fair play to him.
For me Donaghy and Paul Geaney will start along with Donncadh. Brian Sheehan will probably start too for the placed balls and linking the play.
I would pick Darren at 10 personally for the next day.
Gooch to start. James or BJK to make up the 6. BJK is wirey enough now I think for the rough and tumble to come.
I would definitely have Crowley back at 6 for a bit of extra steel too. Murphy and Killian on the flanks.
Aidan, Marc and Enright in the FB line.
Who would be a manager eh??

Darren to start is a good shout. Have him making runs like he was doing vs Kildare, play him in and when they foul him Sheehan can slot the frees and they can get black cards. Could potentially work.

Yer full back won't get a suspension at all for his striking action despite the fact that players in the past (generally wearing green and gold!!) have had suspensions handed down to them for incidents highlighted on TSG. Football has been heading this way for ~12 years now as previous posters alludes to 2004 minor final. Tyrone aren't the only one's to pull such antics, but they certainly keep taking it to new levels every time.

And yes, just like the Sunday Game, some really balanced posts here yeah right .. McCann was ridiculous and Id be happy for any player who does what he did to be sent off .. However, I dont remember the same outcry when Rory Beggan did it or when Shields did it a few weeks ago ... I m just going to assume that all the hysterical posters on here were just as outraged when your current full back did it a few years ago Anyway, it bodes well for us really as when the knives are out for us it lets us know we must be doing something right ... We wont win the AI this year but I am genuinely upbeat about where we are going.. Sean Cavanagh is some player !! Actually, yes. No one here was happy at that one and it was said at the time. Quite embarrassing, really. And yes, there was an outcry over Shields, too. Probably not so much as he didn't get away with it and Cork lost anyway. Don't know the Beggan incident.

Lets hope the Monaghan game was a 'one off' installment of diving and gamesmanship on a grand scale. It wasnt really on show in any of the other quarter finals, or 4th round of the back door games, or provincial finals. It would be a shame if sky 1 were to broadcast this around the world again for all to see.

Does anyone think this is a game for Tommy Walsh up front - option of hitting ball into him or Donaghy ?
He made some mighty catches last time out and is strong as an ox. We will need serious muscle and craft for this one. Eammon has some tough job keeping their heads focused here and not getting carried away with prior games and all the chatter that will occur in the coming weeks. Play their football add adapt accordingly. Not being afraid to try something different when things aren't working is key.

Would be very tough on Jonathan Lyne, but I can see the logic. I think we need Crowley for this one. The good thing about Fitzmaurice's regime is that a dropped player has hope of a reprieve. It also makes predicting the team a more enjoyable exercise. Stephen O'Brien ran into trouble against Cork. He was class v Kildare, but I can see Tyrone turning ball over on him. Darran is probably that bit cuter regarding knowing when to offload. If you had Darran and Donaghy on the pitch you have easy ways to vary it. I feel Kerry are just too predictable when Donaghy is on the pitch, they ball is often hoofed in. It is clear that is the instruction from the sideline. I would expect Tyrone to target Kealy in some way. Maybe under the high ball. You would expect they would not push up too excessively on kickouts, as it would suit Kerry for him to go long. But they will surely be alive to the fact that he can lack composure when pressured. I think we can expect to see Galvin on the field at some stage to win dirty ball.

I agree Cavanagh will be under a few high balls early close to goal.

Firstly the funny irony of Whelan's point that McCann should come out be open and honest, I made a mistake and then brush it under the carpet. A strange slant on that phrase Sean Cavanagh got a sly dig from Finlay alright as he was on his knees. Dermot - he is a great player, one of the finest in last 20 years, but the little dint McManus gave him walking to take a free that saw him fall on the ground was farcical. Really bad. How Kieran Hughes was left on the pitch is beyond me, he would appear in the melee, throw a lad off and then snake away hoping to avoid detection, half attempted roundhouse kick on the ball too at one stage. He lost it completely. McCann not just for the hair assault, was bananas blindly running in and grabbing lads rolling his head about, it looked to me like he was hoping someone would clock him. I can only describe his movement of a something like a lad in the horrors of cider in a dark room. It was crazy stuff. Sorry Dermo, I agree Tyrone are not the only ones responsible but there is a consistent trend across minor, club, U21 and Senior that have seen Tyrone teams involved in scenes/incidents many times over the last 10 years that no other county shares. The U21 final this year with Tipperary refusing to let Tyrone representation into their dressing room afterwards is something I've never heard of before at inter-county level. I don't believe it was down to Tipp just being sore losers. Yes it is a GAA problem, but I don't understand why people would choose to pick on Tyrone, if the evidence of these issues was in equality across all 32 counties. Why do you think Tyrone are the sole focus now from this latest match?
