I was walking up Lewis Road the last day, it was still dry and relatively pleasant. The group in front of me stopped walking quite suddenly and I almost collided with them. Then I noticed one of them pointing and saying to the children who were about 10 or so. "Do you see that man over there? He's David Moran's father. He played football for Kerry as well".
The little exchange got me thinking. Is it really 40 years since that team exploded into the limelight . 40 years since we won the treble, minor, senior and u-21 with 3 teams sprinkled with greatness. It hasn't been done since.
At the time, I was of an age where we cut pictures and reports of Kerry matches out of the paper and kept them. I was delighted that Kerry won but too young to appreciate the significance of it all. Tis fair to say I've been hooked ever since.
Any thoughts or memories welcome from the few of you old enough to remember better than I as well as those of you who have grown up on stories of 75.

"And the Dublin fans numbed into silence, by the brilliance ,the absoloute brilliance of this young Kerry team" Michael OHehir, September 1975. A great day, and we've had many since!

Thats one of my earliest memories of those days.. Going down there to see these heroes.. giants of men in my eyes... going in for a night of celebration in that self same hotel. The always seemed about 8 foot tall back then.

I always Thought Mikey looked meek in that picture. In between Paudi and Deenihan. But He was the most lethal assassin of them all. In todays world of team Phsychs and multi numbered backroom teams Kerry's was there in that group picture....Leo Griffin! And you're dead right Kerrygold what a way to celebrate that 40th anniversary and indeed the memories of Tim, Paudi and John, would it be to see Kieran Donaghy making a rousing speech from the steps of the Lower Hogan later on this Fall.

If Paudi tidied himself up a bit and gave Mikey a bit of room, he wouldnt look meek at all ;-)

Tipp with Babs Keating at FF gave Kerry a real fright in the very first game of that campaign. Kerry got a couple of goals at the very end which put a gloss on the scoreline.

I have some old scrapbooks with cuttings from newspapers that I used to make every year. Must rummage around in the attic to see if I can find them. Really hard to believe it was that long ago.

Should boys of our age be rummaging in attic. Was speaking to a buddy at Christmas who works in A&E , the annual xmax fairy light rummage in attic leads to fair share of visits then. bi curamach:p

The banners and flags is one of my memories of that period - in particular one Dublin banner that went something like 'In 55 we took a dive, but in 75 we are still alive' Michael O Hehir thought is clever - as we learnt that day they took another dive in 75. That game stopped a Dublin 4 in a row as they won 74, 76 & 77.

At the start of 1975, Cork was the problem. Cork looked set fair to keep Kerry down for a decade. Cork has beaten Kerry in 1973 and 1974. That Kerry team had two huge foes in the mid 70s in Dublin and Cork and it wasn't till they put out the Cork fire in 1978 with the arrival of the Bomber that they could turn all guns on Dublin.
Forty years ago! The 1975 Munster Final seems like yesterday.

Billy Morgan also told us 2 or 3 years ago that Cork were going to dominate Kerry for much of this decade.

It has to be acknowledged too that Cork were fighting on both fronts in the mid 70s... the hurlers won the treble in 76.77 and 78 with JBM etc

And what younger folk need to remember is that it was do or die championship in those days.
One game was all you had to get it right, no qualifier no back door. The best you could hope for was a replay. If you lost then regardless of the quality of the performance, the championship was over for another year.
