I'd imagine Tommy Walsh and Darran must be bulling for game time at this stage. Mark Griffin will be eager to get back into the match day panel also. Eamonn might through a curve ball and throw in one wild card selection for this game based on how things might be progressing in Fort Knox. It has the makings of a good game of football. Last Saturday's result will have un "crippled" any hangups Kildare might have harboured due to recent "beatings" from top tier teams. The first 20 minutes or so could be chaotic and furious if a fresh Kildare with no fear of the occasion hit the traps at pace. If Kerry are anyway ropey it may take some time to grind down the game. The game should be closer that the recent Dublin mauling of Kildare as Kerry don't have the same explosive range to their game as the Dubs enjoy. On the flip side of that mauling Kildare still managed to score 14 points against Dublin. 14 points and a goal from Kildare would leave this game pretty tight on Sunday. Take away the Dublin goals and that game would read 18 points to 14. Have Kerry the range to their game to score 5 goals at HQ? Kerry journeys in Croker while in transition will be about cutting their cloth to measure. Longford scored 10 points against Dublin and conceded 1 less goal. So we've got a shipping of 5-18 by Kildare and 4-25 by Longford. What foes this all mean? Dublin are decent. After that Longford and Kildare not great, Kildare a little better than Longford. Take away the five goals I don't understand, why would you ? They are critical key pieces of evidence. They serve to indicate a team being overrun. I don't see why a game would be analyzed excluding those goals. I don't know, I suppose I keep replying KG because you seem resolute in making a case for Kildare that I can't see and I'm wondering why specifically. I'll leave it be now anyway and sure...tis just a debate at end of say

Stephen O'Brien got a black card in the last league game against Tyrone. If I remember rightly he hand tripped someone. He really impressed me in his first few games for Kerry but he hasn’t kicked on or appears to be learning anything. Against the better teams he seems to just run into the traffic and loses possession very easily. He has an awful habit of soloing/hopping the ball when going into contact and isn’t set to protect the ball and loses it. He needs to time his solos/hops better. He seems to seek contact with an opponent rather than using his pace to run around them. It has come to the stage where I don’t think I’d trust him in a tight game. He was acting the maggot as soon as he came on in the replay, kicking the ball away when Cork tried to take a kick out and got involved with a Cork player when the ball went over the sideline (I think he got booked for that but not sure). He’s picking up sloppy cards (I think it could be a similar enough story to Paul Galvin in 2004, when Jack dropped him because he didn’t trust his game discipline). I’d be slow enough giving him any minutes if a game is in the melting pot because of his sloppy discipline and the way that he loses possession way too easily. Thinks that's on the money. Correct on hand trip v Tyrone. I like him too but needs to wise up and soon

On a horses for courses basis... I would like to see Griffin given a shot at CHB in the Liam Flaherty/Tim Kennelly furrow Different era when power and toughness were perhaps more appreciated in that role.. These days the centre back has to be extremely good on the ball and has to ability to sense danger in terms of reading when to fall back or push up.. I feel Griffin's solo is too high and awkward for such a position and his skills off either foot are not up to the required standard

I would love to see Mark Griffin back in the fray. I love his attitude...... in every sense of the word. He is not good enough for me, he was poor in the league and turned inside out against Tipp so I dont want him anywhere near the squad. His turn of pace is too slow, that in the full back line in dangerous.

Should be a powerful battle in midfield again on Sunday, a battle that will go long way in determining the outcome. I'm delighted Jack O'Connor has higlighted Kildare's Paul Cribben, as his a powerhouse of a player. The strange thing with the Dublin vs Kildare game is even though Kildare were well beaten on the day, they actually more than held their own in midfield when it came to midfield possession and kick outs won. www.irishexaminer.com/text/sport/mheyojkfeysn/Jack O’Connor: Kerry must watch white-hot Paul Cribbin By Tony Leen - Wednesday, July 29, 2015 From second-level colleges glory to All-Ireland minor and senior titles with Kerry, Jack O’Connor has seen it, done it and written the book. And the fine detail? What about naming the best five young players he’s seen in colleges and underage? Among that prized quintet is a Lilywhite booby trap for Kerry ahead of Sunday’s All-Ireland quarter final against Kildare. “I’ve often said the five best players I came across in nearly 20 years being involved at vocational and colleges competition since 2001 were Alan Dillon (Mayo) at vocational level, and in the colleges, Michael Meehan (St Jarlath’s), Declan O’Sullivan (Coláiste na Sceilge), Mark Lynch (St Pat’s, Maghera) and Paul Cribbin, the current Kildare midfielder. That is the exalted company I reckon young Cribbin is in.” O’Connor had plenty of reasons to remember Coláiste na Sceilge’s first All-Ireland Hogan Cup win in 2009, when his son Eanna popped up with an injury-time goal to break the hearts of St Mary’s. Edenderry. Firebrand opposition midfielder Cribbin left a lasting impression. “He was a serious player in that final and destroyed us at midfield. Cribbin was really a top player back then and he is proving it now, and he will be a real threat to Kerry on Sunday.” Enough of a threat to be the platform for a second successive Lilywhite scalp? “I wasn’t surprised they beat Cork, because the game was set up for Kildare. Kerry is always a big game for Cork, and they put a lot into it. I know myself, that years we lost to Cork, we were lucky enough to gather ourselves after it. We were also lucky not to meet the strongest teams, with respect, in the couple of rounds after losing to Cork. “Psychologically, Cork were wounded after losing to Kerry, especially when they had chances to win it the first day and many would believe that they should have beaten Kerry in that first game. They then run into a young, fit, hungry Kildare team, that has received a lot of criticism, coming in under the radar, with no pressure on them, so they were going to test Cork’s mettle. And the bottom line is that Cork was not just up to it.”

David Coldrick is the referee for Sunday. Padraig O Sullivan in charge of the Dubs Fermanagh game. First big games in Croker for him?

I'D keep Cooper in reserve until the game settles in the second half depending on how it is panning out - would'nt take them for granted though as they will have gained confidence from the Cork game.

I am sure people will forgive me for posting this result here but I have just heard that Kerry u16 girls had a great win in the All-Ireland final this evening. They beat Galway 7-15 3-03. Weeshie had some of them on Terrace Talk last Monday evening. Delighted for them.
Ladies football in the county seems to be thriving.

This thread is fairly quiet given that the team will be picked tomorrow night. I don't think there'll be too many changes bar maybe M Geaney for Buckley. Buckley is threading on very thin ice. I think Donaghy will start too. I wonder will Galvin get a few more minutes?

Rumours around Tralee all week that Donaghy picked up a knock, don't know how true or serious it is though. Also has anyone heard of this injury that Buckley has been carrying all year? Apparently he may need an operation but it's being put off till after the All Ireland.

I would start Gooch before Donaghy anyway. Possibly put P Geaney full with Gooch at corner and if things arent happening let him roam about. If Gooch doesnt start the next day he wont start in any semi or final if Kerry get there. Kildare will give Kerry a good test but think kerry should win with a bit to spare so oppurtune time to start Gooch.

Things are getting serious now and we can't afford any passengers from here on in. Saying that, he actually doesn't look like he's carrying an injury and I suppose he has made 1 or 2 notable contributions over the Cork games but he is nowhere near lasts years level and that is plain to see

Dublin 5-18 Kildare 0-14. Are Dublin that good? Did Kildare greatly improve since that game? Some Cork players were not at their best V Kildare and Kerry should be expected to win comfortably if they are to be considered serious challengers for the All Ireland. Kerry need cover at full back, so now is the last chance to give Griffin another run there. Give him plenty of experience to support him e.g. O'Mahony at 2, with Marc at 6. If this does not work out there is plenty of experience on the bench.
Lots of comments here about the forwards, especially half forward line. Should O'Brien, Cooper, Buckley, Darran or M Geaney start? Sheehan and Walsh seem to be certain but are they fast enough to track back? Perhaps the answer is to have Maher give more support to the half back line. He seemed very comfortable when he went back to mark O'Connor V Cork.
At this stage we should start to see a settled Kerry team with only minor changes from now on.

Bottom line is if Kerry don't show up and Kildare play to their potential then Kildare could win. If Kerry show up then they will win. And you can put any combination of the current squad out and I'd expect the same result.
Me personally I'd ike to see a hunger and a composed performance that would give us a 5 plus point win, we don't need to shooting the lights out,

I expect the team to be along the same lines it was for the replay.
Even though Kildare gave an excellent display last week I still think that Eamonn will see an opportunity to keep an edge there for the remaining games. So I think that at least 1 player will get their first championship start. That may well be Gooch. If it is Gooch then that changes the attacking options – long ball is almost redundant – Donaghy out (?) - more work in middle third – so Mikey Geaney may also get a start.
Midfield is set in stone.
The defence is an ongoing experiment and is getting closer to the eureka moment. But the omission of Peter Crowley is a mystery. There may be a niggling injury (which would account for his lack of fitness) or a personality thing (he was dropped unexpectedly last year too). If none of the above it must be the way the half backs are expected to deliver the ball into the full forward line. That is the only way that the incumbents on that line (except Murphy) would keep Crowley out.
But if the long delivery is not needed then Crowley may be back in.
Anyway, my guess at the team Eamonn will put out.
Kealy Marc, Aidan, Shane, Young, Crowley, Murphy, M & M M Geaney, Sheehan, Walsh, Gooch, P Geaney, James. First sub after 25 minutes – too many good players on the bench.

I think Eamon will keep one eye on the semi final for this one. If we survive the quarter final we will most likely play Monaghan or another Ulster team. Keeping this in mind we should the structures in place to train for that challenge. In my opinion Griffin simply has to start as we need more than one option for Fullback. Black cards, large panels, massed defences, etc, etc, all mean we need at least two options for the specialised positions like Centre Half Back, full back and midfield. The trend seems to be that there are no longer set positions but that every player plays almost every position, but I don't think that truly works for fullback. Griffin had great games and lesser games, but is the promise for the future, In the forwards we have almost too many options and this might be the game to try Walsh and Galvin. Man for manKerry have better players than Kildare, but Kildare will be brimming with confidence and had some very good practice in the qualifiers. If Kerry click Kildare should not be a problem though, but I'd be very wary for the semi final game. Kildare will be a tough nut to crack, but that's just what we need at this point.

I think Peter Crowley should come in for Killian young in half back line. Although chances of that are slim. Mikey Geaney to come in for Buckley at 10,Usually I'd put O' Brien ahead of Geaney but Geaney has come on an awful lot and O Brien was disappointing in both Munster finals. Donnachadh is a dead cert at 12 and it's a straight toss up between Cooper and Sheehan for the 40. Also we need Mark Griffin to be coming back into the matchday panel and to be coming on and making an impression because he takes over from Mahony next year or the year after.

I can't understand why people think Griffin has any chance of starting an All Ireland quarter, semi or final having been left off the Munster final panel.
We would need at least three back line injuries for Griffin to get a start now as the pecking order is clearly Crowley in, then Fionn in with the remaining players to be moved around.
He's not and doesn't look like becoming a full back option at any point. As others have pointed out he may have a future in the half back line but has none in a full back line competing in the latter stages of the Championship.
Marc, AOM, Enright, Murphy, Fionn and Young would all be preferable full back line options in any scenario. If we were to lose AOM and Enright and have an Aidan O'Shea type to contend with I would still prefer Crowley doing a job than Griffin personally.

Additional Information: Additional Squad Members Mark Griffin St Michaels-Foilmore Pa Kilkenny Glenbeigh/Glencar Alan Fitzgerald Castlegregory Padraig O’Connor Killarney Legion Philip O’Connor Cordal Kieran O’Leary Dr Crokes (Recovering from an Achilles Tendon Injury)
Substitutes Bench - The Kerry substitutes bench contains four players who started against Donegal in last year’s All Ireland Final – Brian Kelly, Fionn Fitzgerald, Peter Crowley and Johnny Buckley. Two more, Michael Geaney and Barry John Keane, were introduced as substitutes during that final. Quarter Finals – Kerry: Kerry have played in 14 consecutive All Ireland Quarter Finals since their introduction in 2001. They have won 12, losing to Down in 2010 and Donegal in 2012 and were taken to a Replay by Dublin in their first Quarter final. Kerry have played 10 different counties in those 14 years, playing Dublin 4 times (including 1 Replay) and Galway 3 times. Roscommon, Mayo, Armagh, Monaghan, Down, Limerick, Donegal and Cavan complete the opposition. Kildare: Kildare appeared in their first Quarter Final in 2008 and 5 in a row between 2008 and 2012. Their victory over Meath in 2010 is their only victory to date, losing to Cork (twice), Tyrone and Donegal. Kerry and Kildare – Their last meeting: Kerry and Kildare last met in the Championship in Round 4 of the Qualifiers on 27th July 2002 in Semple Stadium. The Score was 2-10 to 1-5 in favour of a Kerry side who had Paidí Ó Sé in charge (with John O’Keeffe, John O’Dwyer, Eddie O’Sullivan and Eamonn Walsh) against a Kildare outfit managed by former Kingdom supremo Mick O’Dwyer. Marc Ó Sé played corner back that day in his debut season and another link with that team is Eamonn Fitzmaurice who was centre back on that evening. Current Selector, Diarmuid Murphy was sub goalkeeper. Damien Hendy, then playing his Club Football with Currow, was centre back on the Kildare team.
Kerry face Kildare in All Ireland Quarter Final
Fore warned is fore armed they say and so it is with Kerry as they head to Croke Park on Sunday to take on Kildare in the All Ireland Quarter final (throw-in 2pm). Prior to the final game of the Group 4 Qualifiers, all the talk was of a Cork victory over the Lilywhites that would set up a mouth-watering quarter final tie between Dublin and Cork. Kildare had not read the script however and produced a power-packed performance to stun the Rebels with an 8 points victory that did not all-together reflect their superiority all over the pitch.
And so, as Dublin had already met Kildare in the Leinster Championship, it is Kerry and Kildare who have the top billing in Croke Park with Dublin taking on Fermanagh in the other quarter final.
Kerry are on a hiding to nothing on Sunday against a side with nothing to lose. The Leinster side, having disposed of Laois after a replay, shipped a nineteen points defeat at the hands of Dublin in the Leinster championship before rehabilitating themselves with Qualifier victories over Offaly, Longford and Cork. They kicked some big scores in the process and that in itself is unusual for Kildare teams. No doubt, that victory last weekend will have brought them on in leaps and bounds and their confidence will be sky high.
Kerry have yet to fire on all cylinders in the championship this year and they will certainly look back with mixed feelings on their two performances against Cork. Fortunate the first day to earn a reprieve, Kerry struggled in the second half of the replay to put the Cork challenge away given that the Rebels posed little or no threat up front for the final third of the game. Still, Kerry’s graph is going in the right direction but they would be foolhardy to underestimate the threat posed by the resurgent Lilywhites on Sunday.
The fierce competition for places on the team is certainly something that will please Eamonn Fitzmaurice and at this point in time it remains to be seen if some players have played themselves back on the team when the Finuge man releases his starting fifteen on Thursday evening. This could be one of the games of the Championship and Kerry will certainly have to bring their “A” game to the table on Sunday to set up a semi final meeting with one from the Monaghan/Tyrone/Sligo Quarter Final on August 23rd.
The Kerry team will be announced on Thursday night and will be posted on the Kerry GAA Website at 9pm.
Kerry GAA Supporters Bus Kerry GAA Supporters Club will take buses to Dublin on Sunday next for the All Ireland Quarter Final meeting with Kildare. Buses depart Farranfore at 6:30, Tralee at 7:00 and Listowel at 7:20. Please contact Donal O'Leary 064 7758099, John King 066 7124229 or Martin Leane 087 2452901. All seats must be booked not later than Thursday 30th July. The Dates, Times and venues for Kerry's Minor and Senior All Ireland Championship Quarter Finals have been confirmed by Croke Park
Senior Kerry play Kildare in Croke Park on Sunday next at 2pm followed by Dublin V Fermanagh at 4pm. The Kerry Senior Team will be announced on Thursday and posted on the Kerry GAA Website at 9pm.
Minor Kerry play Sligo in the Minor Quarter Final and that game is fixed for O'Connor Park, Tullamore on Monday next August 3rd at 2pm as part of a double header with the Galway V Tipperary Quarter Final.

Bench is very strong again if things aren't going to plan.. thought Gooch might start this one but will be good to bring on when needed. Buckley being dropped is understandable given his performances in the last 3 games. Overall a strong team that should be well capable of doing the business.

If Stephen OBrien was a rugby player he would ideal wearing 13 and would go through any gap in the defensive cover in a flash. He is brave and honest and a nightmare to mark unless you operate a well organised blanket defence. The blanket defence poses him problems and he is more suited to the half forward line. He might have a very prosperous future as an attacking wing back.
Kerry need to start mopping up the breaks a bit more around the middle and hopefully SOB can contribute to that aspect too. Buckley didn't look fully fit in recent games and if he is injured why is he in the 26.
There is a good bit of steel in every line now in that team now and with 6 subs allowed Kerry can finish with a very strong team too.
Sooner or later Kerry will lose a game through conceding goals. They must revert to the formula for the 2014 final which won the All Ireland and so pissed off Brolly and co.
