There was an excellent game of football in Caherciveen last night between South Kerry and Dingle. I expected Dingle to win far more comfortably than they did (1-15 to 1-10 I think) but in fairness to South Kerry they did out in a very good and determined performance with some outstanding score taking on both sides. Dingle were the better team and that Conor Geaney is pure class. The economy of effort he takes to kick long range scores is phenomenal. The Sheehy fella midfield and Tom O'Sullivan full back were also hugely impressive. Mark O'Connor seemed to be playing well within himself but was able to dominate the last 5 minutes or so when necessary. Jamie O'Sullivan (waterville) and Diarmuid Keating (skellig Rangers) did most of the scoring for South Kerry in a very entertaining game.
Anyone know if the losers round was drawn last night?

I see West Kerry gave a walkover to Spa in county championship last night. How does this happen at this level? I know they are only picking from three clubs but they should still be able to get a team together and compete.

What are the rules regarding divisional sides -I see the make up of a division at minor level does not equate to U21 and senior level. Divisions seem to be "moveable feasts" - anyone with the low down on how these work.

I think the rule is that is you play in Division 1 of the County Minor league, you are allowed to compete in the Minor Championship if you wish. The Divisional teams, East Kerry, Mid Kerry & Shannon Rangers all put up big wins. surely ballydonoghue would have been able to compete this year on their own, having won division 1 of the co. league. East Kerry must be very strong.

Ballydonoghue would have to compete in the Co Minor Championship for a MINIMUM of two years if they had decided to go it on their own, as opposed to playing with Shannon Rangers. This situation arose last year when Spa Killarney went on their own instead of remaining with East Kerry, having played with them for their winning Championship side a year earlier. Spa felt that it was of more benefit to their club to have all their players playing for the club, rather than a select few for the Divisional side. Have to say I agreed with the logic as they were/are competitive in the competition. Ballydonoghue would not be at the same level next year as this year, so have opted to remain with Shannon Rangers.

Most results were pretty predictable prior to the games.. We're not expecting Crokes to beat Kenmare, expected Dingle to win by more home advantage for SK obhiously proved to be a help, EK putting up a massive score against Rahilys also, Mid Kerry with a big win and I expected Stacks to beat Feale Rangers by more good to see Rangers becoming more competitive at Minor Level. Any other reports on the games other than the Dingle game? I'd imagine Shannon Rangers East Kerry and Dingle would be favourites but I wouldn't be ruling out South and Mid Kerry to cause a few upsets.

East Kerry very strong- Darren Brosnan & Daniel O'Brien in defence, Ronan Buckley @ midfield; David Clifford @ 13, serious operators all over the pitch; their pick is huge when you take: Kilcummin, Legion, Glenflesk, Gneeveguilla, Listry, Fossa, Firies & Rathmore into account- they will take stopping!

I wasn't at it but i heard Kenmare were poor. He is Seans son Brians nephew. Paul Clarke is his name. Crokes have a decent side not as good as last years team but not bad . Tony Clifford is usually the goalie. David Naughton is usually full back. Brian Fitzgerald and Mark O'Shea are usually in the backs Mike Potts , Jack Griffin and Craig Courtney. Midfield probably Gavin White and Billy Courtney . John Kerrisk David Shaw and Brendan Coppinger half forwards. Michael Casey Paul Clarke and Adam O'Shea could be the full forward line. Jack Lenihan was injured so don't if he is back. Dylan O'Sullivan , Conor Harrington , Mike Buckley , James McAuliffe, Mark Hartnett, Shane O'Connor, Neil Doherty would be others.

I wasn't at it either but I heard that Jack Lenihan played and did very well. Gavin White controlled the first half and Stephen O'Sullivan dominated the second. John Mark Foley didn't play, don't know why. I mostly saw Paul Clarke at no. 12 during the county league and a main target for kickouts, Dylan O'Sullivan mostly played full forward, but it sounds like he was unmarkable in there. It's not just the height; he has really developed as a footballer. I am told that he is in training with the Crokes seniors and, while I am not of course suggesting that he is ready to start nailing a starting place among the likes of Buckley, Brosnan, Moloney, Alan O'Sullivan, Ambrose, Milner, Casey etc., it sounds like he is one to watch out for. I meant to ask the people I was talking to (Crokes lads, but they would know the Kenmare players too) about David Shaw, whom I rate highly, but I plain forgot to ask. East Kerry totally dominated Rahillys, David Clifford was outstanding but they had real threats from all over the field. 0-9 to 0-1 at half-time. Never in doubt and not really entertaining to be truthful.

I didn't know he was training with them. I don't even think he plays with the Juniors. Crokes have a decent u16 side too this year and I think next year they will have a better team and shot at it.

Never in doubt and not really entertaining to be truthful. I didn't make the minor game at all I was away on a break but I was informed that many of the KY minors involved failed to make a telling impact on the game. Kenmare struggled to get the O'Shea's in the game and Stephen O Sullivan was in and out of the game. Gavin Whyte was supposedly the best minor on show. Crokes have a good side, many of whom are still very young and underage for a couple more years. Whether they have what it takes to win it out is another thing but they certainly have what it takes to cause an upset against East Kerry, Dingle or Shannon Rangers. I haven't heard anything about Mikey Casey or Paul Clarke getting called into the minors but I'm not convinced they would have a major impact. Mikey Potts, Jack Griffin and David Shaw have serious potential. Mikey and Jack are under 16 and were part of a victorious Kerry South u16 team in the Munster Championship. Potts is versatile and usually plays either midfield or centre back with the latter probably his best. Griffin is also versatile with half back probably his best position. These guys have what it takes to be quality footballers at Senior County Championship level at the very least, if not better. It would surprise me if both did not make the minor panel next year. David Shaw is in training with the KY minors at the moment and he is also underage again next year, he's also an excellent prospect who plays in the half forward line usually. Paul Clarke is a big man and has improved dramatically in the past year alone, however I think he is a fair bit off making the Crokes senior panel at this stage. He may play at some stage for the seniors but I would be surprised if he featured prominently for the seniors in Championship for a couple of years at the very minimum. He has serious height and decent aerial ability but once that is matched he doesn't seem to have anything else in his locker. I saw him training one night alright but it was when Crokes seniors were very short in numbers and the minors had just finished a session. This was about three weeks ago when Crokes were preparing for the threat of Donaghy in FF and he was the ideal man to throw on top of the square. It will be nice to see some of these progress into the senior panel and monitor their progress, many of whom I am extremely excited about.

The Minor Championship will have a few twists and turns no doubt but E. Kerry are in pole position with Shannon Rangers the main threat. Calling on 8 different clubs the E. Kerry side have decent players accross the field with a number of different potential match winners - they also have a decent spread of scoring forwards. Shannon Rangers backboned by Ballydonoghue (minor league winners) would be the main threat provided they maintain form - they played some dodgy football in the early rounds of the minor league but came good in the end beating Dingle with surprising ease. Crokes are well off the pace compared to either of these teams but depending on the draw could progress. Other than Dingle, none of the club sides are likely winners.

On the topic of divisional teams - what constitutes a division. Mitchels play minor and senior with St Brendans but went alone at u21. Rathmore/Kilcummin play with E Kerry at minor but went as a combo for the U21 competition. Juvenile divisions like Eoghan Rua dont feature at minor. Is there any limit to the number of clubs that come together for a divisional side?

I'm not so sure I agree that Crokes are well off the pace. Underdogs, yes. East Kerry and Shannon Rangers are certainly the standard bearers and I would expect one of these to win it out. However, it would not be a major surprise to me if Crokes ran them close or got a result. Crokes have a lot of good players, many of them have played for Kerry South at under 16 level and are certainly more than capable of beating these sides on their day.

Crokes have a solid team no doubt and I would love to see them do it but like onlykerry said East Kerry have talent all over the field and Shannon Rangers also. Crokes have had a solid underage structure with fellas like Pat O'Shea his brother Sean O'Shea John Galvin Vince Casey and other ex players helping out. The work has paid off. They have had good minor teams for the last 3 or 4 years now and have a Kerry minor almost every year. It also keeps the Seniors up there with Stacks Legion O'Rahilly's etc at the top of kerry football. With every club you need to be able to replace players every year for Injuries, Immigration, Retirement , etc. Crokes have been able to do that and that what keeps them on top. Mike Burns Jordan Kiely Aaron Murphy Cillian O'Regan Johnny O'Leary have all been brought into the Senior Panel in the last year. Gavin White Billy Courtney Mike Casey Paul Clarke Jack Lenihan Adam O'Shea im sure will get a look next year with players like David Naughton David Shaw Mark O'Shea likely to get a look in two or three years so you always have to have players coming up. They all wont play for Kerry but im sure there will be good players for Crokes.

Mikey Potts in an unusual name in Kerry. The name Potts is famous in Traditional music circles as pipers and they hailed originally from Bannow, Co Wexford before settling in the Liberies in Dublin. The GAA journalist Sean Og Potts is from the same clan and he co-wrote Paidi's book. I wonder in young Mikey Potts from the same stock.

They all wont play for Kerry but im sure there will be good players for Crokes. Crokes have had good minor teams for the last 10 years or so with the exception of one or two teams in between. The last 10 years they have contested 4 finals, if not 5, and many semi finals and while they came very close in a few they fell short in all of them. There was a couple of years in between where we were not quite as good as other minor teams that went through the club but that is always going to happen. Pat O Shea has done Trojan work for the club and Kieran Ward is doing huge work at underage level for the club at the moment. It goes back as far as when Luke Quinn was a Kerry minor, Luke is now 29. This was a good Crokes team that were unfortunate to lose by 1 point in the 1/4 final to South Kerry, who eventually went on to win it (I think anyway). The following year Crokes lost to South Kerry in the final in Killorglin with Paddy Curran having an outstanding game I remember him bagging a couple of goals. Crokes had Kerry minors that year in Leary, Looney, Mike Moloney, Jamie Wrenn and John Payne was on the extended panel. South Kerry were star studded with Liam Sheehan, Eoin O Neill, Aidan Shine, Killian Young, Gary O Driscoll, Paddy Curran and Liam O Sullivan. The year after this resulted in defeat to Kerins O Rahillys in the final by a few points. Our minors that year included Alan Kelly, Mike Moloney, Ian Howard, Johnny Buckley and Jamie Doolan with Gavin Tucker on the training panel. David Moran, Tommy Walsh, BJ Walsh, Con Barrett, Liam Kissane, Danny O Sullivan and BJ Keane from that team all going on to play Kerry minor. Another player from that team who always impressed me was Mark O Sullivan (Boysie), he was a very stylish kicker and I often watched him outshine many of the aforementioned team mates of his. I have seen his name in the Kerryman in recent years playing Soccer but he gave up football in his late teens, a pity. The following year saw us lose yet again to West Kerry back in Tralee with Johnny Buckley sustaining an injury from the throw in which in my view shattered our chances after 5 seconds. Johnny Buckley and Jamie Doolan were very dominant on this minor team and we never recovered the loss of Johnny from the throw in as we struggled to get ball in to Jamie Doolan, Ruairi Mangan and Daithi Casey. Fionn Fitzgerald and Buddy Leary were also part of this Crokes side. West Kerry had many that year who played minor including Tomas Sayers, Micheal O Se, Colm O Muircheartaigh, Joe Scully, Tom B Brosnan, Eoin MacGearailt, JB Spillane, Alan Fitzgerald, Mikey and Paul Geaney.. Philip O Connor from Crokes was a great prospect for this age level but he suffered a couple of horrible injuries. He broke his collar bone in the final with South Kerry in 2005 and shortly after recovering he broke his leg, an injury that he failed to fully overcome. He was a player who had a great brain and was extremely intelligent on the ball. He was also a brilliant basketballer and he had a great pair of hands and instinct for breaking ball, he is a player that saddens me whenever I see him because I always think what could have been, another pity. I'm pretty sure it was last year before we contested another final which we lost by 3 to Dingle. Ky minors involved included Jordan Kiely, Micheal Burns, Aaron Murphy (extended panel), Gavin Whyte and Billy Courtney (this year) and there is almost too many to mention from Dingle!! That Dingle team have won everything there is to win before graduating to senior, it's a phenomenal achievement. Crokes surely deserve a County minor title after all that heartbreak!!

Hugh - simple fact is that club sides have to be exceptional to win the minor championship. I have searched for a role of honour but cannot find one - I suspect that the number of club successes are rare. Crokes are a big club and never won it. As far as I know Rahillys won it once and Stacks twice in their histories. Dingle's success last year was their first. Last year was unusual with two club sides in the final and both going for their first success. Anybody out there have a role of honour for this competition?
