Strand Road beat Mitchels by 13 points this evening apparently Big win alright for Strand Rd- overall they were too strong for Mitchels who lined out without Niall Sheehy; Strand Rd led by 0-8 to 0-4 @ half time but should have been more ahead in reality; they took over in the second half though and kicked on for a good win. Defensively strong with good displays from Cormac Coffey, David Murphy & Mitchell Donnelly, to an all action display from Cian Sayers at mid field and some great play upfront from Jack & Gearoid Savage- they will be underdogs in the final but are there on merit and will not succumb easily. Any idea of who got the scores? Gearoid Savage looked a real prospect maybe 2 years ago but then had a few niggly injuries- glad to see that he's getting back on track

I was at the strand road v Mitchels game. It was a poor enough game with an over fussy ref who didn't let the game flow , he must have given out 10 yellow cards & 2 blacks both to Mitchels players which effectively killed the game as they were down young sheehy & Duggan already. I wouldn't mind it wasn't a dirty game either. Strand road were well worth their win but you couldn't see them getting close to east kerry, on that performance jack & gazza savage were good, Gavin o Brien fetched some great ball, & while cormac Coffey did well enough he gives away some easy ball at times.. The new pitch at the back is coming on well in. Connolly park but it was a nightmare to get out of the place after. When is the final fixed for, surely Kerry's involvement won't push this out to October as I don't think there's anyone involved at senior level & the minors can't play anyway as long as they're involved?

Jack Savage accounted for 7 points in all, 5 frees, 1 "45" and a great score from play off his left; others on the score sheet were Tommy Begley(0-1), Cian Sayers (0-1), Cormac a goal, Gazza Savage (0-1)- referee was fussy but I don't think anyone could argue with the 2 black cards- both looked deliberate obstructions, left him with little option. Final originally fixed for 7th August will now take place on Tuesday night 11th.

At the east kerry v gaeltacht game and while gaeltacht kept going as a contest game was over at half time east kerry are very strong all over the field with 7 clubs to pick from but we're wasteful in the second half, as a neutral I thought rob ose in midfield gave a great display of fielding dominating centre field in the second half.in my opinion with east kerrys pick of player's it will be very hard for rahillys to compete with them

What a performance, no one saw it coming, Strand Road, well worth that victory, if it wasn't for some iffy keeping would have been more.
Cormac Coffey, though... He'll make it. Outstanding performance, no stopping him, pace, power, skill, he has it all and a good head too.
It was seven teams against one from Strand Road, hon the Narries!

Heard that Ronan Quill had a stormer aswell Never saw him look as strong with tackles coming in, like most of them he was just hopping off the ground. Missed an early goal chance that he really should have converted, but set up the goal in the second half with some strong running, got three points from play. They wiped out East Kerry, in midfield the first half, Gary O'Brien, leaping above everyone regularly and every break falling Strand Road's way. East Kerry, were flat from the start and that's what killed, they had a chance to get back into the game at the start of the second half, but that was answered with 1-3 points, game over after that.

An absolutely brilliant team performance saw Strand Rd win their first ever county U-21 championship against red hot favourites East Kerry tonight in Castleisland. From the get go Rahillys surged forward and with Jack Savage pulling the strings they led 0-6 to nil after 20 mins; EK were in trouble all over the pitch- Rahillys were dominating mid field and with Cormac Coffey playing in the unorthodox role @ wing forward they pressured at every opportunity; Ronan Quill was unmarkable and should have goaled after a sweeping team movement; EK struck their first score on the 22nd minute from a free but trailing 0-7 to 0-2 were dealt a severe blow when Conor Keane was black carded for a body check on Cormac Coffey - Coffey raced onto a Cian Sayers pass in the 27th minute and billowed the net to leave the score at the short whistle 1-9 to 0-3. The divisional side needed something to happen on the change over and got it with a fortuitous goal when a long ball in was spilled by the keeper; fortune again favoured them minutes later when the Rahillys defence failed to clear and the ball ended up in the net- 1-11 to 2-5 and Rahillys seemed in trouble- but a brace of points from Jack Savage followed by a Diarmuid O'Sullivan goal ( made by Ronan Quill) soon had Rahillys in the driving seat and they comfortably saw the game out on a final score line of 2-15 to 2-09; Cormac Coffey was the Man of the Match but in truth this was an outstanding team performance and will be savoured for a long time in Strand Rd. . Jack Savage top scored with 0-7, Cormac Coffey added 1-03, Ronan Quill 0-4 Diarmuid O'Sullivan 1-0, Brian Scannell 0-1.

Cormac is the real deal - a never say die attitude, frightening pace and good temperament- though still developing he should soon be part of the senior ranks.

Fair play to strand road , not many including myself ,gave them much hope of pulling that one off. The future looks bright if they can keep a few of those lads on Irish soil. Cormac Coffey & jack savage look to be serious prospects & I always rated Martin tierney at full back but he never seemed to get the rub of the green in the minor or u21 setup??

A massive win for Strand Road last night, very few gave them any chance but they came out of the blocks quick and played outstanding. They had great performances all over the field, one man I'd feel sorry for was the goalkeeper Robert O Connor, he got caught for both goals and had a few short kickouts that went wrong, it was a pity cause he is an up and coming keeper in the club and has kept them in the Championship in a few games with some great saves. He will learn alot from this. The backs were rock solid bar 10 mins in the second half where they were slow coming out after the break. They showed serious character when it went back to two points and all the momentum was in East Kerrys favour. Conor Keane got a black card for a body check on Coffey and came out the worse of the challenge.
Coffey was outstanding 1-3 from play and got through aload of work from half-forward playing almost has a sweeping half-back also. Jack Savage also, he may not have kicked a score from play from his overall play was remarkable. He has glandular fever... bare that in mind. He gave Dan Donoghue and the East Kerry defence a torrid time and gave some great ball into his younger brother Gearoid and Ronan Quill. Quill who was very poor against Mitchells by his own standard was a different man last night, was out in front for every ball and looked like scoring or setting up a score every time he got the ball. Made a goal and could have scored one of his own, while kicking 3 great points from play.
Middle of the park is where this team has excelled also Diarmuid O Sullivan and Cian Sayers have come on leap and bounds this summer and got through alot of work last night against a formidable midfield partership for East Kerry. Gavin (Mush) O Brien was outstanding again, he will surely get a look in with the U21s next year. He fields some ball and has all Championship long, he was very intelligent last night the way he was breaking the ball, knocking it down to his own men.
A great win last night, and great to see a club team stick to together and rally like they did in the second half when it seemed like they would crumble. That was the one of the differences last night.

Fantastic result - EK were 1/7 with the bookies before the throw in apparently. Reviewers gave the club side little chance and it was expected to be a formality - somebody forgot to tell the Rahilly's palyers and management. Showed great character to kick on after EK pulled them back to two points after a storming (fortunate goals) start to the second half. Would have been so easy to drop the heads at that stage but they didn't and took the game to EK to be 8 points up at the end of normal time - EK got two late points to leave the final margin at six. Rahillys had four minors in their starting 15 through this competition. Not easy for a club side to take on and beat divisional sides - this win was well deserved.

I honestly didnt see this team as being anywhere near good enough to win a championship and that was based on knowing most of the players and knowing their results at different age levels. Its a testament to the players that they put in such a performance but also I have been talking to several people who were there and it seems like the management got their tactics spot on.
Everything that they did seemed to work- the choice of sweeper, the positioning of Coffey and the positioning of Savage. People are quick to praise players but the management seem to have picked a team and system that allowed Coffey and Savage (their marque names)to shine while also utilising the talents of all other players effectively.
It's no mean feat for a club side to win a county under 21 championship.

Good point. They had Padraig Griffin, as a sweeper and he got on a lot of ball from breaks, was trying to locate the East Kerry free man, I'd say their ten men on the line were looking for him also, was definitely a case of too many cooks on their part.
