Great interview and does seem to be a really nice guy.always taught he was a pure headcase by his antics on the pitch but my mind was changed last night. A true football genius and nice to see him nominate the footballing genius of them all(maurice fitz)up on to the top ten irish sportspeople board

I apologise to all Mayo people.
How terribly wrong we can be at times.
He truly loves the game.

Thanks for posting that interview. I have rarely seen a more honest, a more refreshing, a more self effacing interview. The genuine article on and off the field. Nothing false about this man. As the late Bryan McMahon was wont to say " he dared to be different". Kieran was one of the best kickers of a ball that I have seen. Another aspect of his play which was alluded to in the interview was his body of granite. Anybody trying soften up this man was colliding with a brick wall. Winning five , six All-Ireland becomes meaningless in one sense when one considers this great man got none. Of course, that fact doesn't diminish his status in the game. Still happily and passionately playing with his club at the age of forty. I wish him years of health and good fortune.

It was a revelation and a pity we didn't know it sooner, although I had heard stories that support how he came across, but stories are, well stories!
I like the comentary from the match where he scored 11 points:
Kieran McDonald a shot, Kieran McDonald a point.
Kieran McDonald a shot, Kieran McDonald a point.
Kieran McDonald a shot, Kieran McDonald a point.
Kieran McDonald a shot, Kieran McDonald a point.
Kieran McDonald a shot, Kieran McDonald a point.
Kieran McDonald a shot, Kieran McDonald a point.
etc

A fantastic player who was a free spirit on the pitch in every sense of the word.

It shows you can't judge a player on number of All-Irelands won. Even looking within our own county Pat Spillane has got double the amount of Celtic Crosses to his name as Colm Cooper. It's a 15 (these days 20) man game.

World class. Beautiful left leg. A playmaker, conductor and scorer. Could make space from no space. Carried himself with honour and honesty and played the game for joy, to win of course but without automaton drilled sense of systems. I feel better knowing he won the AI club title having had the 3 senior losses. The long hair, the Aussies targeted him 04 but he was able to hold his own. A refreshing character, GAA needs more of his kind. Was in pub in Crossmolina in 04 when Kerry beat Galway in league final. He was there having a few shcoopeens, has great time for Moynihan. Great fella.

The sort of player and lad that you watch the game to see regardless of allegiance, genius was right, Frank McGuigan was another I'd say. Not enough room for great individuals in team sports sometimes. I'd love to have seen Mark Vaughan become that sort of player but his basic skills weren't strong enough. Best of luck to him, shame he never got a winning Cross
