That late free against Moran(non existent) got Tyrone a late chance which they got a point from just cost Kerry a semi final. Joe Mcquilan was dire again today, he has to be stopped from reffing games, it's an embarrassment to the GAA He is very poor but then again so are a fair few other refs- the standard of officials is fairly appalling I can accept mistakes, after all people are only human. But when one team repeatedly suffers mistakes at the hands of a ref in every single game they have him then it's time to stop giving that ref games. The frightening thing is I've heard Pat McEnaney say Joe is the best of all the refs when it's crystal clear he's not

The frightening thing is I've heard Pat McEnaney say Joe is the best of all the refs when it's crystal clear he's not I just find that the refs in football seem to make a lot of decisions based on the players and crowds reaction. For example- Cavanagh's shoulder to Paul Murphys chest in the 1st half should have been a yellow and would have been 1 all day long in Tralee or Killarney as the crowd would have reacted negatively to it. On what Pat McEnaney has said- maybe he is the best but thats not saying much as the standard is rubbish

Aside from the late dramatics, an interesting game. Kerry looked a tired team from their tackling, unable to stand their men up and force them to shoot. If you were a Tyrone fan it must have been maddening, Kerry were there for the taking but Tyrone only pushed forward in numbers after Kerry got ahead. Dermot and tyroneperson might enlighten us are they playing the same way against the other teams as they did against Dublin and Kerry? Considering that Kerry did well to get the result, Tyrone had a few goal chances that would have sealed it for them(although if Murphy scores for us it's game over). Darran O Sullivan offers us something vital with his pace and will be a big asset during the year, Tommy Walsh had his best game since returning( I hope over the next few weeks when the ground hardens his trademark gallops return) while the Gooch is still the Gooch. Throw Galvin, Donnchadh, James and the other Geaney into the mix and it'll be very hard to pick the forwards. The one thing we need to work on is to stop teams running through us like today(in fairness we did against Dublin and the last 2 times against Donegal) and to start doing it to the opposition(easier than said, near impossible today against that number of defenders). Roll on the Summer

I thought Donaghy was superb in the second half- nearly every ball that went in was won and led to a score/chance

Very good game. Disappointing knowing that if we did our job and beat a team we're much better than (with respect to Tyrone) then we'd be into the semi-finals now. But relieved to stay up. McQuillan was awful, on both sides this time though.
How class was Gooch when he came on? Forgotten how much I love the guy.
Overriding question for me now is- can we afford NOT to start Bryan Sheehan in tight games? The points difference from his frees is significant and it's not as if he's useless otherwise and he's a passenger, he also can have a role in this team I think and is a quality footballer, and scores from open play. Would he start if he couldn't kick frees and we were at full strength? No. But look at today, and in Tralee against Donegal. If it wasn't for him we might have lost both games.

I thought Tommy was poor as well. I think the management team have been very poor in their handling of Tommy. He is way off inter county pace. It would have made more sense to let him play away with the club and train with kerry until he's ready ( he might never be ready). Giving him game time in the league based on the hope he will come good is doing him no favours. Basically he is being picked on his form of 6 years ago; he needs to produce at club level first

Agreed, tommy is still off the pace and is nowhere a starting place at the moment. Donaghy, geaney and Darren were all impressive. Bjk and o Brien hurt their chances today.
I thought some of our tackling was very lazy especially lyne. Tyrones running game showed our defensive system is not championship ready yet.

Ok guys pick the Kerry forward line(this should be fun!!!!). It obviously depends on form, injuries ans suspension but Cooper and O Donoghue have to play , you have to make a strong case for Sheehan as well but where do you play them all?
10 Darran 11 Cooper 12 Donnchadh 13 Geaney 14 Donaghy 15 O Donoghue
Sheehan's best position is midfield or centre forward but how do you put him ahead of the Gooch? It'll probably be horses for courses, against the ulster teams i don't think you can leave 3 in the full forward line so that'll dictate who plays. And just look at some of the subs I'd have available!!!!!
Buckley O Brien Sheehan Geaney Walsh Galvin Keane(Barry John and Conor)

I'd go for: 10 Buckley 11 Sheehan 12 Donnchadh 13 Geaney 14 Donaghy 15 O Donoghue As you said- it will be horses for courses and Gooch will come in quite a bit but at the moment- you couldnt drop Sheenhan. You couldnt have Gooch and Sheehan in the same half forward line as that would be suicidal- I think we might also see a bit of Jameso at 11 this year with Gooch in the corner

We coughed up a lot of goal chances today and Tyrone players were able to skip around our backs with ease at times which is worrying. Both Marc and Tommy Walsh looked off the pace when they came on. Donaghy won good ball in the 2nd half. Fantastic to see Gooch back in the green and gold.
Joe McQuillan again showed his true colours today. He was awful. The free against David Moran at the end and the one he gave against Lyne for an off the ground were laughable.

I might go for O'Brien - Sheehan - Buckley in the HF line, Cooper and O'Donoghue in the corners and Geaney and Donaghy tussling for the no.14. If you had Donnchadh instead of O'Brien I wouldn't mind either but I like what O'Brien offers. Prefer the idea of Cooper at centre forward but at corner forward he'll drift in centrally and deep anyway.

Today's game would have been made for Donnacha Walsh and Galvin if both were fit and healthy - we need a grafter to win breaking ball and help around that middle defence. They should have won it in the end - thought they held on a few times when a few scores were there for the taking. Agree with comments on ref as he certainly baffled me. Hard to pick that forward line but I would be more concerned with the backs and Eamonn should be looking for some serious challenge matches between now and June ...
Buckley is one of the stand out players for me from this league and he has some boot on him. We also need to find an alternative free taker - can't believe we don't have one at this stage.

Referee atrocious Kerry giving away frees so close was poor Don't recall our tacking in last years All Ireland series being troublesome or such a worry but it's only the league Crazy tight league - 1 point difference between relegation and SF Tyrone did adopt horrible blanket defence swarm tactics but at stages Kerry did well using patience to create space and utilising Donaghy Paul Murphy - was brilliant in the potential for scores from the position he plays in. No he should've have gone die point like my Das thought GK saved two goals / 1 tip onto port - other rushing out Tyrone once they threw caution to the wind exposed out weakness when trash go directly at us Disappointed we didn't close out game Knew Tyron would raise their game exponentially - because it was a chance to relegate us and obviously to Dave themselves - a double motivating factor Switch of BJK so early - felt sorry for him but ah illustration of out managers ruthlessness Donaghy rebirth has been sensational I would not write off Tyrone V Donegal And I fear Cork How important was the failure of bit making SF out of 10 ? 6 for me - Kerry could do with a break in my personal opinion How important was staying up ? 9 Last but not least I DESPISE blanket defences and swarms - sure we utilise it at times as we have adapted - but nothing to the levels of certain teams - what gladdened me most about last years season of dreams was us beating Donegal at their own game - fire with fire - POSTSCRIPT - Bryan Sheehan is A MUST STARTER - people forget how good he is outside free kicks - classy player who's suffered fitness and injury problems - how the hell did Larry Tompkins not mention him - he is essentially the protege of Mauruce Fitz - yet Tomkins mentions the decidedly useless Sheridan - above average fks but other than that --

Gooch and O Donoghue will give us alternatives from frees, especially from 40 meters in. Serious competition for places in the forward line now. Getting the balance right in terms of strenght, fielding ability, pace, breaking ball and scoring will be key.

A good enough Kerry performance considering how hard it is to break down the blanket defence and to win in Omagh.
I thought Tommy Walsh did very well, contrary to some opinion here, winning a lot of hard ball and using it well. TW might yet still make the starting 15 come August, I wouldn't be surprised. Great to see Daz and the Gooch back in action also.
Hopefully we won't see McQuillan again this year, I can't stand the man, a contempt that borders on a severe dislike, at best.
Disappointing to lose out on a semi final spot, to a phantom free against Moran, then again whether hopping off Cork at this stage of the year is desirable is questionable. Retaining div 1 status was the objective at the start of the year. Mission accomplished.
Now back to the clubs for a while, how bad.

The forwards will sort themselves out, too much talent there to get that wrong. It's in defence we need some serious work on. Guys are well off the pace, too many easy free's, and full back is a position that has not been solved.
Complete overreaction to Tommy Walsh's performance's. Kennelly was away for nearly twice the length of time Tommy was (and left as a minor, not YFOTY), didn't really get going until late July/August and then made a huge impact. Again I'd be more worried about getting a settled and stable look to our defence.

If Uncle Joe is the best referee in the game, then we do really have a serious refereeing crisis. Unbelievably poor! Could learn a lot , in my opinion, from Marty Duffy.

Didn't really get a chance to watch the match properly. Was just on in the background. I did see Kerry keep ball for the last few minutes, which was more surprising to see McCurry take a point with 30 seconds left. What was the point (no pun intended)?
Reminded me of Cillian O'Connor in 2013 final. An experienced team will keep ball for valuable seconds, so when you're in a position close to goal, you should always go for goal, as you will probably not get another chance. Which is what happened.

We're 6 weeks behind the others and we were near qualifying for SF. I was among really genuine Tyrone supporters, one of them a student ref, they thought ref favoured us. I think the ref was ok and we must remember that in many cases he is looking from the opposite side. I saw a few instances where we could have been pulled up, so I wouldn't be so quick to blame the result on him.
P Murphy and Johnny Buck were my stars of the day.
The hospitality only gets better and meeting the rank and file Tyrones is a pure tonic. They missed 4 goals and once the game was over, that was that.
They will be prominent in the championship and who knows how things will unfold. Come what may, it is already a great year. I know I am a year behind the great Mick Finucane in this 'guesstimation', but I think the progression of the newer recruits will separate us from a lot of teams this year. P Murphy will be a Kerry great, be jazus but the way he carries himself shows pure contempt for anything that might stand between him and that ball.
The day certainly put truth to the line that 'nothing beats being there'. Conditions were sublime and the long range points had to be seen to be believed; was there 10 of 'em and both teams would be proud of this aspect of their performance.
And again, thanks to one and all in Tyrone for the hospitality.

Tommy Walsh just needs time and practice - confident he will come through for us. Our biggest issue is getting a stable defence that does not give up soft goals or easy frees.

Looking back on the league campaign as a whole Kerry's defence has got to be questioned. Listening to Ambrose today on Kerry Radio and he got it spot on. If the Kerry defence performs like they did today and as they performed against Monaghan last week, they have no business up against either Cork or Dublin later on in the year. The sad fact is Kerry have yet to find a solid defensive unit. I know that tactically Kerry got there act together for Donegal last year but so far but having watch both Cork and Dublin in the League, there forwards are much more of a threat than Donegal were. Pity there isn't a transfer market for forwards. Kerry could probably field 2 AL wining teams from 9 to 15.
