I still believe Kealy is a better goalie. His kickouts have been exemplary this league. He picks the giants out with a Scholes-typed pass which differs from Kelly's looping kick

Not wanting to be overly technical but it's not good enough to look at the bald figures and conclude that Kelly is the better goalie. The fact is that having played far fewer games Kelly's stats do amount to a much smaller sample size than Kealy's. Statistically if you want to see whether there is a real difference you have to put confidence limits (CI)around both sets of figures. I'm not going to do that but my guess is that with such a small sample the CI around Kelly will be very wide and will overlap with Kealy's meaning that statistically there is no real difference.
Even if there is a statistical difference you have to ask whether a difference of 10 minutes means anything in real life - it obviously does if those ten minutes happen in the end of a close match where a vital goal is conceded but we are taking here about figures averaged over a much longer period of time. And even if we conclude that there is both a statistical and a "real life" difference, it is making quite a leap to go on to conclude that on this basis alone that Kelly is the better goalie. Football is a team game and so many other variables must be taken into account not least of which will be the strength of the opposition and the quality of the defence.
Such are the vagaries of statistics so we are lucky we have a manager who is using both art and science in making his choices. We can conclude that we have two good goalkeepers. At the moment Kelly is literally number 1 but it is a comfort to know that if anything happens we have an excellent backup and as others have mentioned it is to Kealy's great credit that he has stayed on to contribute after being demoted last year rather than throwing the rattle out of the pram and walking away as has happened in other counties.
Bryan Sheehan's loss is worrying considering his form in the Derry, Dublin and Donegal matches. But remember we were without him in the second half against Donegal and still won the match. Last year showed that the team can rise to the challenge posed by the loss of vital players.

First of all, I am delighted to see the return of another of Kerrys All Ireland winning team from 2014, Bryan Kelly. He was outstanding in 2014 and its right and proper that the jersey goes to him on his return from injury. He was one of the main reasons that Kerry won the All Ireland and deserved an All Star in my opinion.
To be fair to Kealy, his kickouts have improved as demonstrated in his run of league games in 2015. But they could only have improved given his last performance in 2014 against Dublin in the league in Croke Park when he turned the momentum Dublins way with some dreadful efforts. We were glad to have Bryan Kelly to turn too after that night. I am glad for Kealy that his confidence has returned.

Whatever about the argument of who's better, Kealy or Kelly, we have two good options as long as Kealy holds his early season form. Can only be good for Kerry.

I agree that statistics have little enough bearing in relation to Kealy versus Kelly. Personally at this particular moment in time (as Kenny Cunnigham might say)I have more confidence in Kelly. Nothing to do with stats but just the feeling I get from being at the games. I have more trust in him right now. With Kealy there was always that fear at the back of your mind that he'd drop one. If I'm feeling that in the stand what imapct does it have on the full back line? It could be that Kelly starts letting in a few howlers but until such time I believe he is rightly our No 1. Kealy is a perfectly fine 2nd choice. But sure they're both only keeping the jersey warm for Shane Ryan anyway!
Awful luck on Bryan Sheehan. The guy can't seem to get two solid games in a row this year. Any word on this expected return?
I'll be very glad to scrape over the line in this one - and perhaps more importantly given our mishaps in the past against Monaghan - injury free.

A fully fit Bryan Sheehan would put Kerry on a different level. He is awfully injury prone and it must be getting him down at this stage.
Great to see Mark Griffin consolidating his position. He was excellent on Michael Murphy in the first half when he got the better of him on a few "one on one" situations. Has Jack Sherwood slipped down the pecking order? Alan Fitzgerald impressed when given the chance so far. I would like to see Tommy Walsh given a few games at 11.
Best of luck to all the players on Sunday. The main thing is to avoid injury in the ides of March.

If anything I would release Tommy back to the club for a few weeks to get used to the basics again. Catching/kicking/soloing... at the moment, everything looks alien and he certainly hasn't done enough to warrant an extended run in the starting line up given the competition for places.

8-62 conceded so far in 5 games, worst defensive record in the Division, time to start tightening up a bit at the back.

If my memory is right our defensive record was really good last year & the year before If I remember correctly which always looked like a positive for the summer ahead. Does this bode badly for the summer.

Yes but the league so far has been about "blooding" backs in anticipation of the loss of Mahony and Marc next year. Kilkenny and Sherwood have practically no inter county experience, Lyne and Murphy barely a season and Griffin And Fionn 2 seasons or so. You'll be adding Marc, Mahony, Crowley, Enright and Young to the above list come the summer. The final last year proved we are well capable of shutting up shop if needed. I wouldn't be too worried by this stat.

Just on the Goalkeeper debate, I would have said that Kelly was firmly in the driving seat prior to the league this year. Kealy's decent form and noticeably changed demeanour under the high ball have altered my thinking somewhat, but still think Kelly deserves the no.1 jersey for now.
Fitz, correctly deduced that we could not live with the performances Kealy put in against Donegal in 2012 and Dublin in 2013, where at pivotal moments he was found wanting. Luckily, Kelly presented himself as an option, excelling for UCC in the Sigerson. When given his shot, he grabbed it. His great performance in the Munster final (one exceptional catch where he jumped head first over Marc especially) put him head and shoulders above Kealy in my eyes. The Mayo games were the first big tests. The entire Kerry team underperformed in 2nd half of the replay and Kelly was no exception. He didn't make use of the spare man/short kickout, which was what we needed to do. In Limerick we conceded a goal when he was dispossessed coming down with a high ball. I didn't see that as the massive clanger some did. His only fault was over-running the catch slightly, meaning when he caught the ball it was behind his head. When bringing the ball over into his chest he was tackled (fairly) and lost the ball and a goal. It wasn't the same as flapping at a high ball or missing it completely, but an avoidable error nonetheless. I thought he was good in the final, making one vital safe early on especially. (From O'Connor).
Kealy has improved under the high ball and his kickouts look a bit sharper, so it's probably all to play for, but I would still have more confidence in Kelly myself.

the wind in Limerick was a huge factor. It caught out Shane for the high one that led to the penalty too.

Fully agree Tommy Walsh needs competitive games and playing with his club on a regular basis in league games is the right way to go - he is soooooooooooo off the pace it is frightening and wrong to be exposing him at this level of football until he is fully up to the speed of inter county football.... by all means train with the Kerry panel but get club games as well. Center-back might be his eventual position !!!

He lost flight of the ball in the wind, got a well-timed nudge from O'Connor, who caught the ball and then cleverly went across Enright and got brought down. You can't be seriously suggesting he wanted to let his opponent catch the ball and then foul him?

Anyone know what the story is with Cooper. When can we expect to see him back in the green and gold? Looks like it could be 1st round of Munster at this stage. Also, any updates on James O' D?
A win tomorrow should make the result of the Tyrone game irrelevant for us, but we might be in a position to send them down. League has been very interesting so far, although the quality of football hasn't been great.

Would be a bigger risk to play him in Waterville where the field is more likely to be poorer due to it position near the lake

There is no guarantees he will come back the same player. He'll have to earn his place on the team like tommy Walsh and everyone else

Back in west kerry for a few days and listening to the wind howling outside and the rain rattling off the roof doesn't augur well for a football spectacle this afternoon. Still, I wonder could it be much worse than the ugliness Derry brought to Croke park with them last evening?
Winning today would mean the option of trying a few new things against Tyrone in omagh and a couple of extra games. Losing today means a completely different type of pressure next weekend. It will be tough and dour today, it will be about enduring the elements and a very effective defensive system. Monaghan are very quick when they break out, the trick will be stopping that as early as possible. Good luck to Kerry today. Hopeful for 2 points!
