The next three games will give invaluable insight into our weaknesses against ultra defensive games. Dour as they can be to watch, I think it's these games that will help us create our tactical play in championship time. We win one of the next three, we could stay up. We win two and we are comfortable in Div 1. Donegal look a strong team; our legs were heavy last weekend. Maybe the twin towers of old can help. Ciarrai Abu

Kelly should be the first choice goalkeeper though, but having two good, experienced goalkeepers can't hurt one bit.

To be honest, I don't see what Kelly has that Kealy doesn't. The traditional view of Kealy was that he's suspect in the air. I think that aspect has improved whereas Kelly didn't exactly cover himself in glory under the high ball down in Limerick. Plus Kealy is a much better shot stopper in my opinion. Arguably Kelly has the better kickout, but only arguably. Overall I'd have Kealy first choice but I suppose they're both ok.

Between league and championship Kealy has played 52 games for Kerry conceding 50 goals which works out to a goal conceded every 72.8 minutes.
Between league and championship Kelly has played 12 games for Kerry conceding 10 goals which works out to a goal conceded every 83 minutes.
Now obviously 1)the defences in front of them would have changed 2)the opposition would also have varied - so it's not as if you are comparing exactly like-for-like and also this doesn't give any credit to any saves made or the all-important areas of kick-outs.
Personally I would tend to think to favour Kelly is a superior option and I had expected him to come into the starting lineup for this weekend.

Kelly should have got an all star in 2014 in my opinion.
He played in three big finals in 2014, the Sigerson cup final, the Munster senior football final and the All Ireland Final and didn't concede a goal.

I really dont know who I would have given the all star goalkeeper to. I dont think I would have given it to Kelly but I certainly wouldny have given it to Durkin.
Its great to have two good keepers available.

The Tralee Marathon event is on today so just be mindful that traffic may not be it's usual free flowing self in Tralee and its environs.
Best of luck to the Kingdom, today. Hopefully the day to get the show back on the road. Safe journey to you all.

Very enjoyable match. Plenty of free flowing football from both sides in fairness. Young, Buckley and Maher stand outs for me. Donegal didn't capitalise on a period of dominance last 10 mins and missed a few easy points before Kerry's penalty. Black card v Yellow card inconsistent today compared with previous matches.

Donegal were up for it big time so well done on such a turnaround. Was it the best show so far?
The ref was diabolical, he decides on what happens and not on cause, i.e. Our lads got flaked but he gave frees to fake feign fallers. Time has caught up on Murphy catching opponents' hands and buying frees, now he takes Lyne out and the ref assumes it is an accident; that is not his call by the way, he is not a lie detector and given the history I think this ref is either dishonest or a fool. He has to protect players who are exposed to dangerous play and it is only a matter of time before serious injury is done due to his lack of stewardship. Murphy may be sore that 'do unto others' was served up to him by Aidan last Sept but this is no way to seek redress. Refs cop onto this and he won't get any thing that is going, all making for a permanently frustrated player, and a shame given his talent.
Moran was also exposed a few times and Donaghy also got jersey tugged with no free. McFadden fell of his own accord and got a penalty. Ah, yes, the ref is a mule and he will ruin games, and players.
Overall a great game, sweeter that we won and it settles any misgivings of hard luck in AI final. If ref was straight today we'd have put al;ot of daylight, without last (feign) penalty alone would have made it 5.
Let's now hear from the travelling experts, particularly 'on the system'. As John O'Keeffe said over 10 years ago, kick passing kills it, and our rapid movement of the ball was exemplary. I think it was the best televised game so far? Derry Kerry game in the flesh was enjoyable too but today had greater intensity. The ref there was also weak as his inconsistency meant players didn't know where the line was, if you get me, and he didn't favour Derry.
Anyway congrats to all, I expect we will all be happy bunnies as we look forward to Monaghan at home and Tyrone away. These will both be tough and we will come on a lot from how things have turned out, maybe the Cork game included although I hate to admit it. Dublin trashing Mayo in Castlebar is typically confusing when you add us to the mix, then again Mayo handled Tyrone better that us down the years yet they could never touch us. Is ait an mhac an tsaol, sin sceál eile!
I think we can now win then league and after today we would be the most feared opponents I'd say.

Cork 8 Mayo 6 Monaghan 6 Kerry 6 Dublin 5 Donegal 4 Tyrone 4 Derry 1
Round 6 - Saturday March 28th, 2015 Dublin v Derry Cork v Mayo Donegal v Tyrone Kerry v Monaghan
Round 7 - Sunday April 5th, 2015 Mayo v Donegal Derry v Cork Monaghan v Dublin Tyrone v Kerry
That last minute goal for Dublin may prove costly for Tyrone. They would be on 6 now only for that. If Donegal beat Tyrone and Kerry beat Monaghan, Kerry could be going to Omagh with little to play for other than relegating Tyrone!

Donegal had their strongest possible team? Bar McNiallais? The black card is a lottery. Contrast Paul's foul on Cooper going sideways in Dublin's own half v Gallagher's close hanger on Stephen in Donegal's half back line. Ridiculous. Johnny Buckley is heading toward the category 'undroppable'. 'Webs' Moran is the best fielder in the country. The way to beat Donegal is the way to beat us,drive straight at the heart. I nearly threw a kick at the telly for Donegal first goal. BJ fields a pass in good position and rushed and borderline fresh aired a hand pass, goes straight up the field. Ryan McHugh runs straight through the middle, no tracking, great finish. A prime piece of perspective from front foot to foot up arse for video analysis. Sheehan and Murphy from dead balls, dream academy. Killian is playing great football. Peter Crowley was Tomasish in first half.
I wouldn't feel as aggravated as Kman on Murphy in Lyne. It was a cheap lazy ass tackle, knowing his bulk would knock Lyne. Should have been yellow card definitely for recklessness and shnakiness, but no more imo.
Key win. A digression. An eyebrow was raised at Roscommon's 24 point tally in Newbridge. Cork finished very strongly in Omagh

Just back from the game. Very good performance, though shooting in the third quarter nearly cost us and some of the high balls in weren't great. Donegal were more economical by comparison, they hit 3 wides on the trot near the end but hardly any up to that. Johnny Buckley surely MOTM (who got it on the telly?). Sheehan superb first half too. Alan Fitzgerald impressed again when he came on.
Ref was diabolical (well, it's Rory Hickey so..) - he was booed off at half-time and at the end. Couldn't believe Murphy got no card at all for that tackle on Lyne. Considering what Paul Murphy was put off for last week.
Donegal were well up for this one with a strong side out. Very enjoyable game, wasn't expecting one.

An eyebrow was raised at Roscommon's 24 point tally in Newbridge. Cork finished very strongly in Omagh It is all down to interpretation and my contention was that given Murphy's form it was certainly no accident, I'd be sure, and in any event the accident factor does not count although it is right for obvious cases to make allowance and as maybe should have been done v Derry when they had a player sent off for what looked like an innocent enough matter, a genuine accident. Nobody want's anyone hard done by. Not meaning to swipe back, not my form anyway, but Gallagher didn't actually 'clothes hanger' 'Stephen', he actually spiralled him by the shoulder as the replay showed from the opposite angle. There was also other contact, so maybe it was still a yellow, would have been black if he caught the neck. League Sunday may clarify it for us. I am no expert on reffing and I realise that it is a hard job as he can only see one side, often even blinded even if rightly positioned. I recall the soccer world cup where the foul looked the exact opposite depending on which side you saw it from. Decisions are also on the spur of the moment and with respect, I'd say refs mostly get it right when we may call it wrong and we seldom think of that. I suppose we can tolerate errors if he is consistent and doesn't favour. I can't contend with dangerous play and that spurred me today, these guys have work to go to tomorrow, and it is no work no pay. By the way, did anyone sense that Sheehan was being targeted, and as before? Donegal is a v strong soccer county and tacking would be down to a fine art, by comparison I think we are often a bit naive, so learn we must so that we get just rewards for our depth of talent and which was in abundance today. I'd be a big fan of our Paul but that was a black card, he is a Paidi in the making and as a new man on the block he is still in the process of tempering his heavy hits and 'tis a fine line between what's legal and not, be jazus he is dogged and I'd say he is as hard as iron. You can smell his determination even from watching him on the TV and I wouldn't want be on the receiving end of his impact, wouldn't get up for a week.

I though the ref got the Gallagher incident spot on. A yellow. I don't think there was intent to be cynical. Stephen swivelled. Ballythefireside says that if it was around the neck it would have been a black card. Wrong in my view. It would have been a red card in that case.
What we have is the old yellow and red cards with a black card for intentional cynical fouling. Gallaghers was a yellow and it would have been red if got him around the neck.
Paul Murphys black v Dublin was spot on too.

Good win for kerry. Moran was a beast in middle again. M. Murphy should have black carded for the incident just before half time. It was completely intentional. He's a fine footballer but he's developed a real nasty side in the last few seasons.

Very competitive for March. Good to see players like Johnny Buckley moving up a gear, he did really well today. Lots of wayward shooting in 3rd quarter, too much individualism creeping in and it nearly cost us in the end.
Bryan Sheehan's first half display was magnificent. I hope his injury isn't too serious.
Good to see Marc back on the field, albeit for the club.

I was apprehensive travelling to Tralee on two counts. First of all, I felt Donegal were putting out a stronger team than they had in the final last year. As it transpired, they lined out without Odhran MAc Niallais and Frankie McGlynn. They were big losses. My other worry was the game would be abysmal, perhaps finishing eight points to six or so. I was pleasantly surprised that neither of my fears were realised. Kerry won and the quality of the game far surpassed last year's final. It is not to say that there were not battalions of men goal side of the ball on occasions but that ball was moved with lightning speed and intensity from one end to the other. There was an edge there as well. It amuses me when people say that the NFL does not matter. Of course,it is not the blue riband but anybody who has attended, for instance, Kerry/Dublin and Kerry/Donegal, could not question the manic desire to win displayed by both teams. What more do people want?
Dongalman, I presume you were not at the match. Your team lost the points today, very important of course, but they lost little else. They travelled to the other side of the country and conceded little or nothing. Donegal have the reputation of perfecting the blanket defence, deservedly so, but their system camouflages the fact that they have some of the best players in the country. When they get possession, they gallop forward at breakneck speed. It is difficult to cope with them in those situations but, by and large, Kerry's backs held their positions, brilliantly defending at times, and the colossal work rate of our wing forwards, Stephen O'Brien and Johnny Buckley, was pivotal. Still, Paddy Brearty, he is going to be great, nearly snatched another goal and of course Michael Murphy's free into the square at the end was not good for my old heart but, not for the first time, KD, plucked it from the ether, and there was time for no more. Buiochas.
I suppose the outstanding feature of the first half was the display of free taking of both Bryan Sheehan and Michael Murphy. Both were immaculate. How aesthetically pleasing when players put that ball down on the floor and shoot from various angles and distances. Boot to ball. Ah, yes there is still hope for this old game. To underline the free taking is not to suggest that there was little else to enthuse about. Far from it. It was a great contest, all through indeed, feverish and purposeful. Kerry were looking the more assured but they were staggered by the Donegal goal. Kerry people will bemoan some slack marking but it was a terrific goal nevertheless. Michael Murphy won it towards the right corner. He probed and looked and eventually the ball landed in the apron of the in rushing Mark McHugh and his finish was an exercise in precision. Kerry did not stagger for long and defiantly took the initiative. They were the better team now but Donegal were only a point adrift at the break. Those boys don't give up to easily. I suppose nobody was surprised by that.
Donegal had a furious start to the second half, scoring three points in sequence. Not unlike last year's final. Worrying times. However, Kerry today bore no relationship to the anaemic outfit I saw in Cork last Sunday. Anthony Maher and David Moran were terrific and Johnny Buckley was massive,as he was from start to finish. Neil McGee had possession in Kerry's right corner but was dispossessed by Paul Geaney, a difficult chore. Paul looked up and saw BJK loitering, duly crossed it and John Dowling's grandson finished it. As crucial a goal as KD's was in September. Kerry were now cantering more or less but Donegal doggedly refused to wilt. They won a penalty which was struck home convincingly by Michael Murphy. I was experiencing palpitations at this stage and the final whistle was the sweetest music imaginable. Two points in it at the end but Donegal were a little flattered to be that close.
It seemed to me that Brendan Kealy could not be faulted for either of the goals. Paddy Brearty shot narrowly over the bar in the second half and I wonder if Brendan got a hand to it. If so, it was a super save.
Pa Kilkenny was swift and inventive in the corner but he found Paddy McBrearty too good overall. A lot of corner backs will experience a similar fate during the year. I thought Marc Griffin probably had his best game so far. He yielded nothing to Michael Murphy. Not flamboyant, rather conservatively solid. That will do me. Paul Murphy returned to his tidy, impish form with no suggestion of a black card today.
Like Marc Griffin, I thought Jonathan was more convincing today than heretofore, more positive and daring. Peter Crowley gets better with each game. He gave a textbook demonstration of shadowing late in the game when he marshaled Christy toye out towards the sideline, giving him an impossible angle from which to shoot. But it was Killian who glittered the most in the back line.
As already stated, both Anthony Maher and David Moran could not have done more. Both fielded remarkably and David converted a penalty into the bargain. We were two points up at that stage. I said to my neighbour he should tap it over. Veteran gets it wrong again! The worry is can these boys maintain this level all year?
I am glad to able to report that, one of favourite players, Stephen O'Brien, was simply invaluable on the wing. He got on the world of the ball and ,like all good physicists,he knows that the shortest route between two points is a straight line. Bryan Sheehan kicked impossible frees in the first half against the breeze and got two from play. I know, I am repeating myself but you must nail your routine frees to have any chance. Nail the impossible ones and you are on the way to achieving great things. Rugby and football have that vital ingredient in common. Bryan did not show up for the second half ,having sustained a mysterious injury while taking a free. An indispensable man.
BJK deserved his goal. He was full of energy and enterprise,as he has been all through this campaign. But he again displayed a weakness today which has been manifest before. He pulls the trigger too fast with the result that too often he is off balance when he is shooting. I believe that deficit in his game can be eradicated.
KD, as always, was a threat, even though encircled at all times by a phalanx of men. He was cynically foot tripped off the ball in the second half in front of the referee as he ran back towards his own goal. Donegal scored a point from that movement. The referee clearly saw it and of course it was a definite black card .I will return to Mr. Hickey's display on another date. Paul Geaney made BJK's goal, set him up for another goal in the first half but BJK hastily put it over, and scored a point himself. I suppose people will say he had a quiet game! He has had better games of course.
As against Cork, Alan Fitzgerald came on and scored two points, one of them a marvelous effort. Where has this fellow come from! What age is Alan?
The best game I have seen Johnny Buckley play was for the U21's against Cork at midfield in Tralee some years ago. Well, that was his best game until today. He was truly great. His fielding, work rate and vision was a sight for tired old eyes. On one occasion, he came onto Michael Murphy at the terrace side, dispossessed him, the ball broke lose towards another Donegal man. Johnny came again, won it again, and even though surrounded, almost on the sideline, he worked his way free. Will to win and no little skill.
The sour taste after last Sunday has been erased. For another week anyway. Would a victory over Monaghan guarantee a semifinal berth?
