How many this year?, easier to name the one's who only played fantastic, and that is across 3+ games.
Probably like many, I was never so looking forward to the next year. What crowns it is that the Dubs are favourites and both Mayo and Donegal will be out for our blood. Can anyone see beyond these 4, maybe my famous last words when one considers the range of surprise in '14. As a matter of interest, how many think '14 was the best year ever for Kerry, all things considered and bearing in mind that the first win is the hardest for a team that was theoretically in transition.

I savoured '97 being the 1st of my adult years and the famine of 11 years but absolutely '14 sweetest of them all for me

The thing about this year is that watching it back was how bad overall as a team our shooting for points was.
Pretty much every other aspect of our performance was very good in the final but our shooting for points was woeful stuff.
If Kerry's point-taking had been anywhere near average in the final we would have cantered home and if Donegal had managed to eke out the draw we would have been kicking ourselves.

In fairness a lot of those shots were under serious pressure from one of the best defensive units around. We didn't make a bad job of point scoring in cork or Limerick.

The New York GAA Team played Boston to a 1-9 draw in an exciting, tough challenge game the day the 2013-2014 all stars game which followed. The all-star game was a non-event, with nothing at stake, and these games will not draw supporters unless they have something to play for. Two county teams, even division III and IV winners of the national league would be much more attractive. The New York team would need games like they had against Boston in the lead up to the 2015 Championship. Kerry players on the New York team were Kieran O'Connor (Emmets), Mike Jim Fitzgerald (Lispole), and Gary O'Driscoll (Skellig Rangers), who were the better NY Players on the day. Kieran got a leg injury which was not as serious as first thought. In charge of the team were Nial Moran and Ian Galvin (Waterville). A great day out by everybody, with old friends meeting, sharing a pint, and discussing the 2014 Championship, which most people did not expect Kerry to win.
LONG LIVE THE GAA!!!!!
P.S.
I'm off to Florida for the winter, and looking forward to a repeat in 2015 and once again will see all the Kerry games.

Either Maurice Fitzgerald in 1997 or Seamus Moynihan over the two games in 2000. Both gave virtuoso performances in very different ways.

Jacko had a couple of very big All-Ireland final day performances, 1981 and 1985 for example. Maurice probably gave the dream All-Ireland final day performance in 1997.

Tommy Walsh in 09. Four points from play, two off the left, two off the right.

Its actually quite a difficult question to answer as in most matches we are the stronger team so it is hard to pick out 1 individual- thats not cockiness as the facts of the last 20 years will back it up.
The only final that I can remember 1 player really dominating and pulling us over the line is Fitzy in 1997 so instead I will list some of my favourite individual performances (in no particular order):
1) Fitz in 97 2) Dec Sull against Cork this year 3) Johnny Crowley in 2000 ( I has a serious soft spot for Crowley as a player) 4) Tom Sull against Dublin in 2009 quarter final 5) Donaghy against Armagh in 2006 6) Davie Moran v Mayo this year
All stand out performances- fell free to add

The Crème de la Crème always produce it at the highest level- when most needed. Fitz nailed it in '97. D J Carey has done it - Zinedine Zidane did it in the 1998 World Cup - 2 goals in the final.
Sheehy did it in 1979 - unmarkable - scored 2 - 6 - equalled the record for an All-Ireland Final and that includes hitting the crossbar with a bullet fom 7 yards - it came back into play and was cleared.

It is very hard to look past Maurice's performance, awesome display pure footballing ability. He'd dominate on any team of any era no matter the tactics of the day.

Was Maurice unmarkable or unmarked in the 97 final. Pat Holmes stood about 3 yards off him and seemed in awe of the man. Who wouldn't be. Sadly, Maurices greatest performances are not recorded or there are just highlights of them. At 18 he scored about 9 points in the 87 Munster Final. Cork knew that they had to simply stop Maurice and you stopped Kerry in the period 88 to 1995 and by and large they tried it by fair means and foul. Niall Cahalane employed whatever tactic that might work. Maurice glided above it all and carried Kerry as best he could. Maurices timing was perfect in every respect bar one...he should have been born 10 years earlier or 10 years later.

Maurice 97. Context:
- 11 year wait. The pressure to deliver - the years of leading the team until just about enough good players were present with him and the exceptional Moynihan - the score he put up that day - breaking Billy O'Sheas ankle and still MOTM. - Free taking off both feet. The left footed point off the ground on a supposed weaker foot is unequalled to this day, Imo, from a very tight angle. Think it was just after the collision with Billy too, in that area of field anyway
O'Rourke was co-commentator with Canning that day and approx quote after that score "That is the most brilliant skill you will ever see in Gaelic football, a player who can take frees with both feet"
- the amount of character and unshakable conviction he showed after many years of tough defeats. His humility and self control. He's an amazing man.
Finally he gave an interview afterwards with Captain Liam to RTE swigging a can of Club orange. Quality.
Going to start a separate thread shortly in the highlight moments/plays from 2014

I remember meeting Down fans for a league game in Killarney and all they wanted to know was "'Mo' Fitz or Colm Cooper". To them 'Mo' Fitz was the best, no arguments.

Spillane's performance in the 1986 Final deserves mention, dragged Kerry back into it.

Bumping this thread, want to hear more of these stories from people!
I genuinely think David Moran's performance against Mayo up there with the very best I've ever seen.

Effortless left footed free taking off the ground and sideline point kicking were a common sight in the various south Kerry venues.
