I'd find it hard to disagree with the winners.
That Cork ladies were recognised is a healthy sign that we are true sports people, 9 of 10 AI finals is amazing by anyone's estimations.
Fitzy only did what he could, i.e. he could only win one AI and his achievements can't be global as the GAA is in essence a national/ethnic competition. Yip, what he did was truly amazing and none more so amazed as ourselves. There would only be one choice for GAA Footballer Manager of the year but that wasn't the competition and maybe because it would generally fall to the AI winners might be why there is no such award, well apart from the ultimate one of course.
As I mellow with age I also see the benefit of spreading these type of awards around a bit, JO'D got something for Kerry, etc. Such recognition is secondary to the underlying achievement IMO, e.g. you wouldn't swap Sam for McIlroy's award? All Stars are a bit like that too and while it is harsh on Donnacha, he wouldn't swap a single medal he has for an All Star I'd say.
It is also the national rugby team we are talking about so I don't think RTE favours that game unduly; RTE is not a rich peoples' body. Let's face it, all Irish people would consider voting for Joe, and Brian; I don't think any of the 3 beaten semi finalist counties would even dream of paying to vote for Kerry and that is only for starters. Having said that JO'D prevailed and which was good form.
Ah, I hope we ain't getting a bit greedy, Paidi's turkey was tasteless without then auld canister and I challenge anyone to say that all the trophies together on offer Sunday night would have such an effect!
All we can now do is wish the lads the best on their well earned holiday in the sun in the new year, and of course happy xMas to mo chairde go leir anseo. Happy new year too, that can only mean one thing and one thing alone!
